View Full Version : Covid-19 in OKC (coronavirus)
d-usa 08-12-2021, 05:49 PM https://oklahoma.gov/health/prevention-and-preparedness/acute-disease-service/disease-information/rsv.html Oh it's not even a reportable disease. Never mind. Everything is covid
RSV is RSV.
COVID is COVID.
Anybody at home, in the hospital, in an ICU, who is RSV+/COVID- is not reported as a COVID statistic.
That’s been explained to you. You either can’t understand that, don’t want to understand it, or you care more about spreading doubt and uncertainty than getting your questions answered.
C_M_25 08-12-2021, 07:50 PM Does anybody have any plots or graphs showing the hospitalization trends for kids over the past month or so? Anything broken out by why they’re in there to begin with, ie RSV vs covid?
corwin1968 08-12-2021, 07:54 PM I work in education and talk with K-5 educators all the time. Are kids perfect? No, but I honestly think they're better than adults on the whole. They respond to teachers who set a good example and reinforce it. Again, entire schools do a great job of this. It's not a one-off example.
I spent the day in an elementary school, mostly around Pre-K thru 1st. Not every kid was wearing a mask, but every kid who did wear a mask, wore it correctly.
dankrutka 08-12-2021, 09:24 PM https://www.poynter.org/ethics-trust/2021/us-ranks-last-among-46-countries-in-trust-in-media-reuters-institute-report-finds/ It means no one trust our media and like you said there are thousands all with their own agenda. Anything for clicks.
Yet I am able to find tons of great news sources everyday with detailed, thoughtful reporting everyday.
dankrutka 08-12-2021, 09:26 PM I'm honestly not angry with the vaccine hesitant. Many of them are just the victims of the politics of cruelty. But those who preach the pro plague agenda, institute policy prohibiting the mitigation of a deadly disease, and intentionally spread misinformation for political and/or financial gain have blood on their hands. It's cruel, plain and simple.
Absolutely. And that post even says those are the people we should be mad at.
Midtowner 08-12-2021, 09:31 PM I spent the day in an elementary school, mostly around Pre-K thru 1st. Not every kid was wearing a mask, but every kid who did wear a mask, wore it correctly.
Yeah, my kid has worn a mask without complaint for every single day she has been in school since Pre-K. Parents who whine about this are not modeling good behavior and are teaching their kids to be whiny snowflakes.

will be interesting to see how that goes legally ..

I'm assuming it will be fine, there are no real repercussions from the law signed by Stitt. Also with University of Indiana being able to keep their vaccine mandate in place we should see these laws start to really be challenged.
Canoe 08-13-2021, 09:24 AM OKCPS is mandating masks in all buildings, buses and school events, effective Monday.
A win for local control. I look forward to other authorities bringing more power back to the local level.
Bill Robertson 08-13-2021, 09:28 AM I just read the story on KFOR. It says Senate Bill 658 prohibits school boards from mandating masks. So the Superintendent made the mandate. Technicality but hey why not!

Yep. Indiana says only with a medical or religious exemption can you not have the vaccine. Smart way to word it so it will stand up to pretty much any legal scrutiny.
TheTravellers 08-13-2021, 09:33 AM A win for local control. I look forward to other authorities bringing more power back to the local level.
In OK, we can't do that in a lot of cases because it's a Dillon Rule state, that's been noted many times on OKCTalk.

So now we get tons of people claiming "sincerely held religious beliefs" that prevent them from wearing a mask. Be interesting to see what religions actually, really, truly state somewhere in their scripture that their god/belief says it's against their religion to wear one.

And now the SCOTUS has weighed in, with a good decision. Still don't understand a religious or ethical exemption to it, though - I know they had to be in there to make sure it stands, but ethically opposed to mask-wearing, really?

jn1780 08-13-2021, 10:08 AM Maybe we should close schools down again if were that worried about it. That be a better argument grounded in scientific reality. 30 plus kids, in the same room for 8 hours a day are not going to get covid? Please...
I heard you can survive being in the reactor room of Fukushima for 8 hours if you have a good enough radiation suit. Anyone want to perform a live experiment? For Science!
PoliSciGuy 08-13-2021, 10:13 AM If you vaccinate teachers and have kids in masks you can absolutely limit the spread of COVID among the population. For example, schools in NC employed masking strategies and had a secondary attack rate of only 1%, which is incredibly low and can keep schools open and safe: https://abcsciencecollaborative.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ABCs-Final-Report-June-2021.06-esig-DB-KZ-6-29-21.pdf
Maybe we should close schools down again if were that worried about it. That be a better argument grounded in scientific reality. 30 plus kids, in the same room for 8 hours a day are not going to get covid? Please...
There were many many schools across the country who implemented mask and distancing policies when returning to in person class last year and, in doing so, they avoided outbreaks and community spread.
I have actually seen it first hand. There were cases for sure, but no spread among the students at school, where they followed guidelines.
It's super simple. The kids easily and willing followed the procedures. It protected them and kept them in school. Everybody wins and no one had any stupid political whining about it, because they were focused on the kids education, and safety, as well as the safety of their families, not some facebook meme.
At this point, it really isn't that hard. Wearing a mask won't hurt kids. Losing a loved one will, especially if it's because some meathead politician wanted to score points by prohibiting schools to implement policies to protect their health.
Yeah, my kid has worn a mask without complaint for every single day she has been in school since Pre-K. Parents who whine about this are not modeling good behavior and are teaching their kids to be whiny snowflakes.
Not to mention, teaching them a deep disdain for their own communities.
Despite all the whining, there are a lot of kids that are learning the value of empathy and doing simple things for their close community and loved ones. Many do, in fact, understand why they're making sacrifices for the public good and are willingly and proudly participating.
Maybe we'd gain some ground if we paid less attention to the meatheads, and instead celebrated those who are acting responsibly and honorably to help lessen some suffering in their community. Maybe common courtesy will actually become more common.

Ultimate sovereignty resides with the individual. I will celebrate any instance of a choice being made at a more local level. Also I guess I need to research this Dillion Rule. It sounds like trash.
FighttheGoodFight 08-13-2021, 01:36 PM First press conference just wrapped up from OSDH since July. Some things that stood out.
No new Emergency Order but the new guidelines from the OSDH will allow hospitals to do some surge planning as well as report numbers again.
Same thing about personal responsibility and masks.
Dr. Frye said that all questions were answered by their department when the press asked, half the room then proceeded to show all the times they asked the OSDH things and they said no comment or didn't reply. Not a great look.
.. so i really don't care ..
.. this has been clear for some time now ..

Dillon rule essentially allows rural areas to control cities.

How many nurses quit locally due to the mandate? It has the be hard on those remaining with this surge.

I'm so sick of the indifference of the Covidiots. What a disgusting showing by the goon squad at the State Capitol yesterday.

I’ve heard the term “spreadnecks” and I’m replacing my use of Covidiots with it.
But we were driving by the Capitol yesterday when I saw those people and I asked my wife what our legislature and governor could possibly do in order to do even less against covid than they are already doing. What on earth is Oklahoma doing right ****ing now that is still considered to much for those assholes?

crimsoncrazy 08-15-2021, 05:08 PM I heard Oklahoma has had 185,000 doses of phizer vaccine that has expired.
soonerguru 08-16-2021, 02:08 AM Was there a protest? How many were there do you think?
I don't know actual numbers but the estimates are between 1000 and 2,500. All of the folks were crammed into the Capitol building, no masks, and they were protesting vaccine mandates, so one can safely assume that it was a mass-transmission event that will be affecting the state for the next several weeks.
Why they were protesting vaccine mandates is unclear given the very obvious lack of such mandates in Oklahoma nor the political feasibility of them. It was basically an extension of the TRUMP WON events we have been seeing in the last week, many of which were aligned with the belief that he was going to be "reinstated" on Friday *LOFL*.
OkiePoke 08-16-2021, 09:30 AM This protest did have a 'Trump Won' flag... so, not sure if it was against a mandate or what. These people are crazy.
Bellaboo 08-16-2021, 10:06 AM Bunch of spreadnecks.
TheTravellers 08-16-2021, 10:17 AM The thoughtless privilege of America's vaccine refusers (https://www.alternet.org/2021/08/anti-vax/)
"So we sit, month after month, patiently waiting for the 90 million or so unvaccinated, COVID vaccine-eligible people in this country to get off their pampered American asses and drive a meager mile or so to the CVS or Walgreen's to get a safe and simple shot that would prevent a long, painful hospital stay (or at worst, a dismal end-of-life experience on a ventilator) for them. We wait, and wait again, as we read article after article (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/20/opinion/covid-vaccine-hesitancy.html)proposing new, clever ways to get the so-called "vaccine hesitant" to come around (Whatever you do, don't criticize them (https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/05/opinions/how-to-move-people-from-hesitant-to-vaccinated-bregman-jacobson/index.html), we're told).
But while we're busy waiting for these people to somehow see the light, we shouldn't lose sight of just how incredibly lucky we all are to live in a country that actually has the wealth and public health infrastructure to provide these vaccines in the first place."
"Most Americans have absolutely no clue how unbelievably fortunate they are to have these vaccines available. The fact that so many are willing to blithely and casually risk the lives and health of others, to say nothing of their own lives, is a sorry testament to American hubris, ignorance and entitlement."
d-usa 08-16-2021, 10:33 AM This protest did have a 'Trump Won' flag... so, not sure if it was against a mandate or what. These people are crazy.
It was probably their planned “reinstatement celebration rally” and they just found something else to rally about instead.

soonerguru 08-16-2021, 12:39 PM We are getting the dreaded "technical difficulties" from OSDH regarding case number updates. So, brace yourself for a really bad day.
d-usa 08-16-2021, 12:44 PM We’ve had like 50% test positivity, it’s gonna get super ugly with schools open.
soonerguru 08-16-2021, 01:05 PM Does OSDH have to brief Governor Kevin Covid first when the numbers spike out of control? These "technical difficulties" days are usually when he has a big press conference or is in Washington or wants to host Trump.

BG918 08-17-2021, 11:09 AM Getting the feeling that this is quickly spiraling out of control. Anyone else?
My sweet, sweet older sister is at Mercy on a ventilator.
She had been fully vaccinated but had other health problems and had a breakthrough case about 5 days ago.
I know everyone becomes a saint when they are gravely ill, but she truly is just that. Easily the sweetest, most kind-hearted person I've ever known and I've told her and just about everyone else I know that exact same thing many times.
Not sure how she got Covid because she had been back at work for some time but her granddaughter lives with her and just re-started PC schools when this happened.
I am not a religious person but I am spiritual in my own way and have been praying for her and if you are so inclined, I would greatly appreciate sending positive thoughts and prayers her way.
Karen Brzycki Honeycutt is simply the best person I've ever known and I don't want to know a world without her in it.
Bill Robertson 08-17-2021, 11:29 AM Prayers sent. So sorry.
And of course, no one can go see her...
Not me, her daughter who loves her with all her heart, her son, her husband, her four grandkids who she's looked after like they were her own children, not my 3 other sisters.
The hospital set up a link like Facetime and I just talked to her (although she is sedated) while she lays there -- this person that has spent her entire life doing for others -- completely alone.
It's all just theoretical and maybe causes you a bit of a cough or lost taste/smell, but this is the reality of a pandemic that should have been and could have easily been under control months ago.
Get your ****ing shot.
PoliSciGuy 08-17-2021, 11:42 AM Oh Pete, I'm so sorry. I'll definitely keep her in my prayers.
Getting the feeling that this is quickly spiraling out of control. Anyone else?
On the "plus" side, it does look like we are close to hitting the peak in terms of cases. MO and AR are already there, and our modeled R(t) - the number of people an infected person infects - is under 1 (though this is all modeling and estimates). We should be seeing cases begin to decline a bit in the next week or so, with hospitalizations peaking a couple weeks after that and deaths a couple weeks after that.
