View Full Version : Covid-19 in OKC (coronavirus)
416 new cases today; 7-day rolling average 446.
29 additional reported deaths; 7-day rolling average 26.7.
Hospitalizations are 235 (-18).
ICU is 65 (-6).
Bill Robertson 03-19-2021, 11:28 AM I'm glad that deaths have been back in the range of when OKDH was reporting only confirmed numbers.
Bill Robertson 03-19-2021, 06:50 PM Also, today's 416 new cases were out of almost 12,000 test results reported. Things are looking good right now.
mugofbeer 03-19-2021, 09:41 PM And from what l am being told by my OKC relatives about my covid-ill sibling, it warrants saying the level of knowledge and skill of medical personnel treating covid is far better than a year ago. He is a very poor candidate to get covid and had been on the rapid decline but is now getting better every day.
catch22 03-20-2021, 10:36 AM Glad to hear he is recovering, hoping that trend accelerates and he is healthy soon.

kukblue1 03-20-2021, 01:43 PM This week coming up or maybe more towards the end of week it will be interesting to see the number of cases. If they are low that is a great sign. Reason I say that is everything seem so much busier with spring break. I drive by the outlet mall to get to work and even at 2pm everyday this week parking lot was pretty full. Shopping center on 3rd street were busy. More traffic seemed on the road. Maybe I'm the only one that noticed? Did anyone else notice an increase in more people out for spring break week?
They have not updated the numbers today for some reason.
catcherinthewry 03-20-2021, 02:10 PM Oklahoma has quit updating on weekends according to this article.

I haven't noticed just this week. But I've noticed for some time all the business you mention plus all the hotels between I40 and the airport have become busier and busier to the point of now looking as busy as ever. This ramping up of everything with cases still dropping makes me hopeful that things like holidays and spring break won't create the spikes they would if everything was pretty much shut down except for special occasions and events.
kukblue1 03-20-2021, 02:47 PM Let me tell you about the outlet mall today on Saturday it is so packed that it is taking me 12 minutes to get from the mall entrance just to Rockwell light on Reno . It's that busy today. I've never seen it this bad on a non holiday
Lots of restaurants are seeing record numbers over the last couple of weeks.

oh I just put two and two together I forgot stimulus money hitting people's banking accounts this week. You know the money that's supposed to help you pay bills and rent. That's probably a different forum so I'll just leave it at that
No spike in cases will be really good in a week or two

Interesting announcement.by the cdc. This will allow double the amount of children into the classrooms. I have not seen a statement from any teacher's unions regarding this change.

Totally anecdotal, but I’ve been using Walmart pickup for my grocery shopping. To get a good weekend slot I’d usually have to book it a couple days in advance (I.e. hold a spot of Saturday by Thursday night). These last two weeks the slots have been open the day of, possibly indicating that more folks are feeling comfortable going in and shopping.

Funny you said that cause I just did an order for pickup today at noon for tomorrow at 9am I figured I had not shot of getting an appointment as like you said if you didn't book 3 or 4 days in advance you had no shot. We could be seeing the perfect storm also. tax money, stimulus money and spring weather
This shows 0 cases in Oklahoma County since the the 15th.

Now it's usually less than an hour. I went to HD this morning to pick up an online order and the parking lot was half full at 7:30 on Sat morning.

Between the OKDH delaying daily numbers by a day a couple months ago and now not reporting at all on weekends it's about to a point where the weekly totals might be all that make sense.
C_M_25 03-20-2021, 09:07 PM I got out this morning to run a few errands with the kiddo. Stopped at Home Depot and cabelas, and they were generally ok. Had to stop at a off-roading store and there was not a mask in this tiny little store. It sucked because we had to go in to fit my son for a helmet. It was gross, but I’m glad I at least have 1 pfizer shot which is better than nothing. Don’t like the kiddo being in there though...
king183 03-21-2021, 09:51 AM I stopped by Ponyboy last night and it was simply amazing how many people came in without a mask and had to be stopped by the bartender and told to go back outside and put on a mask. All of them looked completely stunned by the request and some didn’t even have a mask with them, as if we haven’t been dealing with this for over a year.

kukblue1 03-21-2021, 10:46 AM Polar donuts this morning at 9:00 a.m. was about 50/50 mask with about eight people in there waiting in a line Then when I was getting ready to leave a big church group of 15 people maybe 20 walked up and none of them had masks.
lady_o 03-21-2021, 12:14 PM We picked up migas tacos from Torchy's yesterday morning and were waiting in the car for the order to be prepared, watching people stream in. The place was hopping and maybe 10% of folks had masks on, even once they got inside. Luckily when it came time for me to go in, they had an alternate entrance for pickup orders vs. dine-in, so I didn't have to get within 6ft of the main line. It was a jarring experience. The vaccination rates don't yet support the number of maskless people congregating - it's like everyone else has forgotten we're still in a pandemic just because the media sentiment has changed.

There was only one family at Target the other day not wearing a mask. A father, in a wheelchair and morbidly obese, and his two kids. This family seemed very, very poor (and I know when you read this it may not read right, but please withhold judgment). Honestly they seemed like they may have come in from way out in a rural area.
When I was checking out, they were in an aisle a couple of aisles over. I overheard the father tell the kids they could each pick one toy out from the wall of small toys situated near the line of registers. It warmed my heart to see the kids eagerly approach the toys, choosing very modest items. Their happiness and excitement were palpable.
The whole thing started with me being annoyed at this guy wheeling around heavy breathing his vapors all over Target, where everyone else was dutifully masked up, and ended with me being very happy for the kids and for this father, who not only received his relief checks, but will also continue to receive monthly payments to help him raise his family. It made me sad and happy at the same time.
Poverty is something that has received lip service in our country for generations, but policy wise, not a lot has been done about it since the Great Society.

Stillwater's popular restaurants, such as Mexico Joe's, Texas Roadhouse and the Hideaway have looked busier than usual. I'm still avoiding going to them when they're busiest.
Since the state no longer reports new cases and deaths over the weekend, every Monday will reflect increases over 3 days.
959 new cases today (for those 3 days); 7-day rolling average 380.
31 additional reported deaths (for those 3 days); 7-day rolling average 21.3.
Hospitalizations numbers will be updated this evening.
catcherinthewry 03-22-2021, 11:17 AM That is the lowest 7-day average for cases since June 29th.

And the average of the three days on the report is 320. Not bad. It needs to keep going this direction.
Only 184 new cases today, lowest since June. 7-day rolling average 373.
24 additional reported deaths. 7-day rolling average 22.9.
Hospitalizations continue to dive at 207 (-35).
ICU is 67 (-1).

I can't speak to OKC, but NE Arizona and New Mexico were booming. There was a one-hour-plus traffic jam outside the town BEFORE the Grand Canyon. Their website says March is one of the slowest times of year and my wife has been there twice in the summer and had no wait to get in.
Everywhere else we went was also packed and we had to try numerous hotels in every city, before we found a vacancy.
I think the declining numbers of cases and increasing number of people vaccinated has allowed people's cabin fever to overcome their fears.

If your vaccinated, why would you be fearful? Eventually the number of vaccinated people are going to outnumber the people of non-vaccinated.
soonerguru 03-23-2021, 02:17 PM I have read that the Navajo Nation is struggling getting its people vaccinated and also is experiencing a major spike right now. It's sad that so many people are still getting infected when the effective end of this is in clear sight.

Good news for the Navajo Nation.
This was in the Salt Lake Tribune this morning:
Window Rock, Ariz. • The Navajo Nation on Monday reported no new COVID-19 cases and no deaths.
It was the second consecutive day that the tribe has not recorded a coronavirus-related death.
And:
Tribal health officials say more than 191,000 vaccine doses have been distributed.
And this from The Navajo Times:
More than 3 of 4 people on the Navajo Nation have received at least one dose of the vaccine, or 79.5 percent of the population as of March 18, according to the Navajo Area Indian Health Service.
It looks like the Navajo Nation is doing very well.

You are correct. I had read a dated article someone shared on FB. Dammit. Hate when that happens.

It was due to expire April 30th. They are proposing making that March 31st; and they probably wouldn't be doing this if they didn't already have the votes needed to pass.
This seems like political grandstanding in order to take credit for being "pro freedom".

They probably have the votes to get it to a vote, but since it would require an emergency to change from April 30th to March 31st it would take more votes. I doubt/hope they don't have the votes.

I’m sure they have the votes. And remember stores can still require it with same (or lack of) enforcement as they do today and you can personally choose to wear your mask and keep distance regardless of this ordinance.
They would have to get 7 of 9 votes.
Hard to believe Cooper, Hamon and Nice would vote for this; same thing for the mayor.
But I guess we'll see.

"Personal choice" is the absolute worst way to characterize a virus that spreads via airborne transmission. There is absolutely no good reason to end the mask mandate because some citizens shouldn't be allowed to put other citizens' lives at risk unnecessarily.
oklip955 03-24-2021, 10:04 PM Agreeded many older folks and others who cannot take the shots for a variety of reasons or those who are not eligible yet until the next group dont want to be put at risk. Many older folks and some others cannot do online ordering and curbside pick up. I am going back to that. I always do my in store shopping at either near close late in the evening or very early in the morning and try to avoid crowds. Even with that I encounter those who want to punish me because I wear a mask. I am getting tired and being knocked to the floor.

To your point, they would need 7 votes to get immediate passage, or it will not take effect until approximately when it is already due to expire.
Total virtue signaling to the anti-masker crowd for purely theatrical reasons. Gag.

They are not getting seven votes for immediate passage. They don't have the votes. This is a stunt to put in campaign mail and score points with angry people who listen to AM radio.

Problem is there is no defined finish line. What one person considers the goal will not be good enough for others.
We are down to half what cases were when policy went into place so there will be strong debate from both sides I’m sure
They should have originally made the mandate have some kind of qualifier such as under X percent for so many weeks and it expires once threshold was met. That way it wasn’t based on dates just decided.
^
All the experts agree we are not at the goal line yet.
Whether we are at the 40, 20 or 5 remains to be seen.

TheTravellers 03-25-2021, 10:22 AM The costs of the pandemic that we've barely started to calculate (https://www.alternet.org/2021/03/long-haulers/)
"What's clear is that the pandemic will leave a lingering social and economic cost that goes beyond just the number of dead. Of those 30 million infected, millions are going to have symptoms that are completely or partially debilitating for a period of months. Some, like SARS patients, may be still be operating at well below their expected capacity years later. Some may never fully recover. That's going to represent both a long-term demand on the healthcare system, and a long-term reduction in productivity, that—like everything else about events of the last year—may be unprecedented."
