View Full Version : Covid-19 in OKC (coronavirus)
Ohwiseone 11-16-2020, 12:43 PM I dunno about you, but I am going to be fascinated on how bars are going to make all their customers leave the bar at 11, if these regulations aren't going to have any sort of fine behind them.
It is amazing how little he did.

probably the same way they make everyone leave at 2
FighttheGoodFight 11-16-2020, 12:56 PM Nothing like it being November and just now having a mask mandate inside state buildings. Oklahoma really doing it well....

Making bars close at 11pm is pretty easy to enforce. They do it already with Last Call. Making sure they keep people 6 feet apart at a bar is a different story.
Bill Robertson 11-16-2020, 12:57 PM We're rearranging deck chairs, or I guess restaurant tables, on the Titanic. Good grief. Can't wait to vote this dude out of office.
Really! I wonder if his wife has any cahunas because he obviously doesn't and every family needs someone to have some.
jerrywall 11-16-2020, 12:57 PM you should take the risk you are comfortable with ... ruining businesses and the economy should be a non starter ..
the CDC says 480,000 deaths are caused by smoking a year in the USA ... ....
And how many laws are in place that restrict the freedom to smoke, and where you can smoke, and such?
The smoking deaths argument is just a terrible one, and I've seen it floated on facebook over the past couple of days (again). It's a shame.

Oh, I do not really go out to bars anymore, and I don't think I have ever reached last call when I did, so I really didn't know.

i know of at least 1 bar that has no plans to follow these guidelines ..
soonerguru 11-16-2020, 01:45 PM I’m sure schools are contributing some to the spread, but I seriously doubt they are the primary reason. Do you have an evidence to support your claim? Instead of blaming kids for this spread, let’s just step back and look at what’s really happening.
Currently, the fastest rate of spread in Oklahoma is in the rule counties. These locations do not, or rarely, have mask mandates. Life in these parts of the state has been normal for the most part. Like most things in life, it just took a little while for covid to take a foothold. We’re finally seeing uncontrolled community spread taking a toll in these areas.
Masks and responsible social distancing, or lack thereof, is the culprit here. Not the schools. Bars, restaurants, churches, colleges, and other large indoor gatherings (of irresponsible adults) is the culprit for this now rapid uncontrollable community spread.
What evidence do you have to make your claim? Two can play this clever game of sophistry. The major variable that changed was in-person classes at K-12 and universities. The lack of distancing you describe had been going on much longer.

Would that be Kong’s Tavern by any chance?

Simply look at the timing. Schools started back at the start of the september. That's the faint gray line that has the label. The purple line is about mid-september. The red line is the start of october, and the black line is the end of october. You can see that the increase in cases was generally up but no exponential. The cases we're seeing now are definitely exponential and occurs about 2 weeks after halloween...which is kinda interesting. If this was strictly schools, as you proclaim (btw, nice job on differentiating between k-12 and universities; you didn't do that originally), then I would have expected this exponential increase to have occurred much earlier this fall.
What we're seeing now is very different growth than anything before. I suspect that it's occurring for many different reasons. It didn't really register with me till writing this that we are really about 2 weeks post-halloween. This growth could be related to halloween parties, it could be related to covid taking hold in rural counties (remember, it takes time for this thing to move rural given the sparse population densities), it could be related to the ice storm, it could be related to increase pandemic-fatigue and premature return-to-normal by many people, it could....etc etc. You assume this is strictly school-related, but the reality is that it is far more complex of an issue than what you assume.

d-usa 11-16-2020, 04:29 PM I think ice storm and Halloween ended up being a potent combo.
This also tracks with the “upgrade” in the reporting system, so is any of this just more people reporting?
jedicurt 11-16-2020, 04:31 PM i saw the CDC now has excess death numbers up through October 3rd. and it's just over 299,000.
Bunty 11-16-2020, 08:51 PM Stillwater Medical Center is now full again of covid patients as of Monday morning, 11/16/20. This graph now includes Emergency Room Hold beds. These numbers represent patients requiring COVID19 inpatient care; however, no inpatient beds are available in house and other hospitals are not accepting transfers at this time. This should serve as a reminder to continue to take precautions against covid, in case your local hospital is under similar pressing conditions.
Fortunately, Stillwater City Council passes first reading of ordinance to extend mask mandate to Feb. 28. Stillwater Medical Center President and CEO were among those speaking in support of it:

PoliSciGuy 11-16-2020, 09:01 PM It's insane that we know how to lower numbers, have the resources at the federal level to help people who have to stay home for a few weeks, yet our overall plan is to just trust individuals to "do the right thing." I really hope this peaks within the next week or so, but I'm doubtful.
PhiAlpha 11-16-2020, 11:35 PM Why risk getting covid-19 at any age?
Because something with a less than a .1% risk of death or serious illness isn’t worth significantly altering your life over? Wear a mask and move on.

1,551 new cases today. 7-day rolling average is now 2,607, down slightly from yesterday's record.
6 additional deaths.
Hospitalizations are 1,381 (+134), an all-time high by a big margin.
ICU is 390 (+28) another all-time high.

FighttheGoodFight 11-17-2020, 11:57 AM So as I am understanding this now these numbers are from Monday technically? They changed the way they report numbers so our low count days might be Monday and Tuesdays instead of Sunday and Mondays

It probably doesn't help that their governor is now saying that nurses who've tested positive but are asymptomatic can keep working.
Roger S 11-17-2020, 12:38 PM Well i just had an interesting experience...
Have worked downtown the majority of my adult life and have been asked for just about everything imaginable by the transients.... Today I had one ask me if I had a spare mask.... Guess I'll start carrying an extra with me until things settle down.

north dakota is well blow their "expected deaths" in 2020

That’s what the North Dakota Governor said, but finally did a state wide mask mandate.

Not since September. Way over that since then.

Yeah, North Dakota has spiked well over their expected death rate.
I guess people are still arguing that COVID isn't killing people though. Weirdos.

Not anymore.

I think they're playing a game to see who can come up with the most ways to say "I don't care".
C_M_25 11-17-2020, 07:28 PM Just read on KOCO that we processed 40,000 tests today! o.O
That’s a ton of tests! They’re really getting after it now. Apparently, there’s a surge right now as people get tested before the holidays.
Keep in mind that we’re at about 15% positivity rates. That would be nearly 6,000 positive cases in one day if the statistics held out.

The positivity is bad. On rt.live a couple weeks ago we were 3rd best. Now we're 29th.
OKCRealtor 11-17-2020, 07:56 PM Had to take my wife to Mercy tonight with severe stomach pains and they are pretty over run. We finally left after about an hour as she's in extreme pain and couldn't wait any longer to get somewhere so we went to a rapid care ER at 150th and Penn. I can't wait inside so ran home nearby real quick. It is really infuriating to see someone be in excruciating pain to the point of nearly passing out and Mercy couldn't or wouldn't do anything at all. She seemed to be in by far the most distress compared to the other people in there. If you've got an emergency over the next couple months may prayers be with you because the doctors won't be for awhile.
OKCbyTRANSFER 11-17-2020, 10:12 PM That's really scary. Sorry to hear and hope she is feeling better. Not a good time to be sick right now, anywhere

This is the type of thing that should have everyone very worried. And as I keep saying, it's only going to get worse right through the holidays and probably until spring.
Hope your wife is okay.
d-usa 11-18-2020, 06:29 AM That’s the reason why one of the important statistics is not only COVID deaths, but also excess deaths.
How many people died because of the stress COVID is putting on the system.

Wow. No kidding.
I don't know what it's going to take to get people to be responsible.
Also, people are going to be lining up to take the vaccine when it's ready. I can't imagine how they are going to administer to hundreds of millions.

I'm still holding out that it will be widely available by March. Mind you this takes two doses about 3 weeks apart and takes 28 days to be effective. That means a whole month to become immune. I imagine we won't see significant number drops in positive cases until late summer. By next winter we might be able to no longer use masks.
PoliSciGuy 11-18-2020, 09:56 AM Keep in mind these are only the first two of numerous other vaccines that will be coming online in the next month or so, and given the early results it's likely those other vaccines will be as efficacious as these two. Dr. Fauci hinted that by April/May we should have enough of a supply that anyone who wants a shot can get some.
Keep in mind that the actual delivery and implementation of the vaccine is left up to the states. You can read it here: https://coronavirus.health.ok.gov/sites/g/files/gmc786/f/state_of_oklahoma_covid-19_vaccination_plan.pdf
Long and short of it is, at-risk folks, nursing homes and frontline workers get it first. EMTs, anyone over 65, other healtchare workers and folks working in confined/vulnerable spaces (shelters, meatpacking plants, jails, etc.) come second. Teachers and university students third, then everyone else.

I wonder what impact our governor being an anti vaccer will have on Oklahoma since it will be "left up to the states"

David 11-18-2020, 10:27 AM Stitt isn't against vaccines.
If I remember correctly it was reported during his runoff with Cornett that several of his children were unvaccinated. He may not be an outright antivaxer, but he's apparently at least antivax-curious.

I think he said this. Maybe he could get them to agree to capacity limits, but I also thought he made mention that business closures have to come from the governor. ( I think, I am not clear on my city government vs state government)

This is terrifying. My wife had acute appendicitis in June. We were fortunate she got in to St. Anthony and had her surgery. Situations like you describe are the nightmare scenario. As someone who suffers from kidney stones, I will be keeping my fingers crossed through February.

Quoting Stitt, "Personal choice." Sounds a lot like "personal responsibility," which, to his legions of followers means, "no responsibility whatsoever."
3,017 (!!) new cases today; 7-day rolling average a new record at 2,727.
26 more reported deaths, a single-day record.
Hospitalizations are 1,435 (+53) a new record.
ICU is 447 (+57!) a new record. Only 6% of ICU beds in the entire state are available.
oklip955 11-18-2020, 01:04 PM I don't know how much our health care system can take. I did a wow when I heard that OU Children's Hospital will be taking patients to age 30. What will it be like in a week or two weeks? We keep asking how bad does it have to get for people to take this seriously. Seems like even with these numbers and with hospitals at the breaking point, it still is not registering with a lot of people. I'm just staying home.
