Pete 09-20-2020, 12:34 PM Do you happen to have OK County's seven-day average? Not yet; I just started adding it to my spreadsheet a few days ago. BG918 09-20-2020, 02:40 PM I don’t know about you guys, but I’m really getting burnt out in regards to this pandemic. I look forward to the day with relish where we can watch a sporting event without a reminder of covid, go to a restaurant, or take my son to the toy store. I think many people are “over it” and unfortunately we won’t get back to normal anytime soon unless people take it seriously. As much as hate to say it we’ll likely be dealing with it and thus wearing masks, social distancing, limited capacity at restaurants/concerts/theater/sporting events, etc for at least another year maybe longer. There is no such thing as our pre-COVID normal life. It is simply a new, worse version of life known as post-COVID that we all have to learn to adapt to and survive. oklip955 09-20-2020, 02:53 PM It seems like in most larger cities the number of cases continues to trend upward. I don't think its just because of the rapid tests being added. I am keeping up with Edmond and new all time high of 316 active cases. And people are still going into stores not wearing masks. Pete 09-20-2020, 03:00 PM This winter season is going to be baaaad. d-usa 09-20-2020, 03:35 PM The best outcome would be reduced flu cases due to covid precautions being followed. That’s what other counties have seen during their flu seasons, but they are also not the US and don’t have the same political dimension to it all. d-usa 09-20-2020, 03:36 PM Deer Creek Schools will have a “student walkout” this week. I’m hoping it will show the limited support for 5 days in our district. Pete 09-20-2020, 03:37 PM The best outcome would be reduced flu cases due to covid precautions being followed. That’s what other counties have seen during their flu seasons, but they are also not the US and don’t have the same political dimension to it all. And nobody has ever gone into a fiu season at the levels were are currently seeing in the U.S. and they just keep creeping higher. FighttheGoodFight 09-20-2020, 03:37 PM Norman public schools now back to online learning. TheTravellers 09-20-2020, 04:33 PM Deer Creek Schools will have a “student walkout” this week. I’m hoping it will show the limited support for 5 days in our district. Good for them, I was part of the student walkout in 1981 or 82 supporting the teachers strike, glad to see this generation of students are doing something even if their ****wit "leaders" won't. Norman public schools now back to online learning. Gosh, I'm shocked, just shocked, I tell ya... And as far as "being over it", yeah, saw quite a few (older - 60-70-ish) people in Lowe's not wearing masks, told the employee I asked to help with high-shelf items, he said "I can't do anything, I'm not a cop". Homeland on 18th/Classen might as well remove the one-way signs, half the people are ignoring them, and when I call them out, they just don't care (with one exception of a nice lady who said "Sorry, I've been trying to go down them the right way, but they've all been too packed, so I just went down the first clear one"). One ***hole asked if I was a cop, and I said "No, concerned citizen who wants this all over with". Seriously, if you can't read the big signs at the entrance and all over the store at eye level, and at least 3 on the floor in each aisle, then you just don't give a ****. If you're driving, do you drive the wrong way down a one-way street unless you see a cop watching you? No? Then follow the arrows at the grocery store or go to one that doesn't have one-way shopping. d-usa 09-20-2020, 04:44 PM Well, the student walkout is the small number of parents pushing for full in-person learning instead of AB split, even as our cases are rising. I’m for students participating as long as they know why and aren’t used as props. TheTravellers 09-20-2020, 04:46 PM Well, the student walkout is the small number of parents pushing for full in-person learning instead of AB split, even as our cases are rising. I’m for students participating as long as they know why and aren’t used as props. So is the student walkout in favor or against in-person learning 5 days a week? I'm confused now. d-usa 09-20-2020, 05:05 PM In favor. There was a petition that about 10% of people signed demanding we go back to full time, followed by a Facebook poll with 10% in favor of going back full time, followed by the “if were can’t have our kids full time we will have a walk out” protest this week. If it’s the same 10% of families, it should be fairly low impact though. FighttheGoodFight 09-20-2020, 05:10 PM My understanding with Norman was it was the amount of teachers out. I believe Norman High had 18 out last week from COVID. Not really sustainable with that many out. d-usa 09-20-2020, 05:19 PM Norman is in Orange 2, so per state guidelines they should be virtual anyway. TheTravellers 09-20-2020, 06:03 PM In favor. Ah, OK, thx for the clarification, no longer in support of the students going back in-person 5 days a week, nevermind my earlier post. There was an article on the front page of the TRANSCRIPT about this. Apparently a number of teachers addressed their concerns to the Board. The high school has about 1/3 of the normal amount of substitutes. This then results in multiple classes being held in the gym or auditorium which impacts contact tracing as students are not in assigned seating classrooms. Irving Middle School had 5 out of 11 electives teachers out the first day. Trying to have in person classes is a dumpster fire. soonerguru 09-20-2020, 07:52 PM There was an article on the front page of the TRANSCRIPT about this. Not a great trend. Mott 09-21-2020, 08:52 AM https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/face-masks-could-giving-people-covid-19-immunity-researchers/ The idea is that masks keep you from getting a high dose of virus, and a lower level of illness. Pete 09-21-2020, 09:17 AM We have now passed 200,000 deaths and 7 million cases in the U.S. and everything seems to be trending up again. The CDC has been saying for a long time that we had to get things under control before cold/flu season. Instead, we are already at a very high baseline. All signs point to a very bad and deadly winter. PaddyShack 09-21-2020, 09:45 AM I was just told to come back to the office after working from home for 6 months... Not too happy with it as not everybody is being told to come in, they just want a minimum number of warm bodies occupying the building. Of course they put in all of these guidelines and what not, but I just don't see why cause more people to be out and driving to and from work when the number of cases and deaths are not decreasing... All in the name of corporate culture and collaboration. Pete 09-21-2020, 11:07 AM 1,101 new cases today as the unprecedented number of consecutive 1,000+ case days have now reached 5 and 6 of the last 7 (the exception being 970). The 7-day rolling average is 1,098, an all-time high. 189 new cases in OK County. 522 currently hospitalized statewide. 2 additional deaths. kukblue1 09-21-2020, 11:34 AM Mask up OKC mask up mask up for you for me for OKC please I had to go to Home Depot today to get something and then I had to pick up a friend that had a flat tire at a local tire shop. Half the people even on a Monday morning at Home Depot didn't have a mask and nobody inside the tire dealership accept my friend had a mask on. I honestly felt safer at the casino a week ago at least there I could social distance the Mask thing is much becoming like the first shut down people are tired of it and over it you're going to start seeing less and less mask-wearing Bits_Of_Real_Panther 09-21-2020, 11:49 AM I was just told to come back to the office after working from home for 6 months... My company is keeping work from home in effect , and they are expecting mid 2021 to be the earliest for returning, assuming vaccines and whatnot. I wonder if companies will require vaccination proof to return, as a liability reduction. I suppose if a clean drug test is required why not a vaccine requirement? Jesseda 09-21-2020, 12:06 PM where does oklahoma rank now with the average new cases each day? Just curious because with our state population and case totals each day it seems pretty high. Pete 09-21-2020, 12:08 PM where does oklahoma rank now with the average new cases each day? Just curious because with our state population and case totals each day it seems pretty high. We are currently 25th but continuing to climb. About to pass California which was once viewed as a big hotbed and a place that is way, way more dense. Bill Robertson 09-21-2020, 12:22 PM Another sign of burnout or not caring anymore? I just left the Walmart on SW104 & I44. They’ve reopened the second entry/exit and the aisle directional markers are gone. I don’t think either of these are really much of a spread threat if you use your brain when shopping but it seems to be a trend of everything lightening up as far as precautions. jn1780 09-21-2020, 12:23 PM Just kidding says CDC. If a virus is truly "airborne" that's bad news for containment. Probably why they are trying to walk back their statement. https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/21/health/cdc-reverts-airborne-transmission-guidance/index.html PoliSciGuy 09-21-2020, 12:48 PM Well, that's one reason for the increase (https://twitter.com/pmonies/status/1308099954154655744): Over the weekend, the number of #COVID19 cases in Fort Supply, OK, skyrocketed. Pretty sure this is from the William S. Key Correctional Center. Went from 31 cases on Friday to 828 cases today. d-usa 09-21-2020, 12:49 PM The problem with the term “airborne” is that it Is both a level of precaution as well as a way of transmission. In a hospital setting, “airborne” precautions mean that you need N95 masks for protection because the pathogen is small enough to travel in the air rather than having to rely on droplets and you need negative pressure rooms because the pathogen can remain suspended. “Droplet” precautions mean that the pathogen has to travel ok droplets, which are bigger and can be mitigated by regular masks, and these droplets can only travel so far before gravity takes over and they fall to the ground. This thing is just flat in both categories, it floats like airborne, but spreads on droplets. The airborne status depends, as it always has, on the droplets being sufficiently aerosolized to flat further. But they still are droplets and can be filtered via regular masks. d-usa 09-21-2020, 12:50 PM Well, that's one reason for the increase (https://twitter.com/pmonies/status/1308099954154655744): That makes Oklahoma County look even worse as a percentage of overall cases then. d-usa 09-21-2020, 12:51 PM Also, big turnout for the Deer Creek Protest to force the district back to 5 days a week: 16466 Roger S 09-21-2020, 12:56 PM ...They’ve reopened the second entry/exit and the aisle directional markers are gone. Not that anyone ever bothered to follow these guidelines.... Well I put it at 0% of the non mask wearing customers and about 15% of the mask wearers. PaddyShack 09-21-2020, 12:59 PM What are people with children remote schooling supposed to do? My company is keeping work from home in effect , and they are expecting mid 2021 to be the earliest for returning, assuming vaccines and whatnot. I wonder if companies will require vaccination proof to return, as a liability reduction. I suppose if a clean drug test is required why not a vaccine requirement? So my company has a pretty strict WFH policy that states you must have a distraction free work area with a door that can be closed while at home. So if you send your kids to school or daycare and they are not in your home while at work then it is fine. For those that don't have that and have children at home, they either need to come to the office or go to part-time. Most people are coming to the office 2-3 days of the week, but the idea is to start increasing the number of colleagues in the office. the culture here is that the office is your primary place to get work done and WFH is a privilege... they seem to pick and choose what parts of the pandemic to believe in. Bill Robertson 09-21-2020, 12:59 PM Also, big turnout for the Deer Creek Protest to force the district back to 5 days a week: 16466There looked like a similar turnout in Edmond last week. I’ve about given up on any hope for “social sanity”. I’m just planning on a continual rotation of my N95 masks and staying stocked up on hand sanitizer and wipes for the foreseeable future. Jersey Boss 09-21-2020, 01:00 PM Not that anyone ever bothered to follow these guidelines.... Well I put it at 0% of the non mask wearing customers and about 15% of the mask wearers. Having to walk down an extra 2 or 3 aisles is good exercise for everyone, including WalMart shoppers. Mott 09-21-2020, 01:03 PM Took the wife’s Subaru to Bob Moore in Edmond, in front of us at the service counter was a women with a tRump mask in her hand. Then went to Natural grocery, and several non maskers. Why would you spend more money on organic groceries, and not wear a mask to protect your health? d-usa 09-21-2020, 01:12 PM There looked like a similar turnout in Edmond last week. I’ve about given up on any hope for “social sanity”. I’m just planning on a continual rotation of my N95 masks and staying stocked up on hand sanitizer and wipes for the foreseeable future. I’m glad the protest happened, and that it exposed the group for their true size and level of support. It’s easy to hide behind Facebook group size numbers, online petition responses, and Facebook polls and claim that your cause has wide support. The online turnout so far has been 10% of families demanding 5 days, which is their best case scenario if we assume it’s not multiple people from the same household or out of district folks responding. So there have always been 90% of families in support of their current AB schedule. But now they went “public” with the protest and walkout, and the district knows just how small this vocal group truly is. jerrywall 09-21-2020, 01:54 PM Took the wife’s Subaru to Bob Moore in Edmond, in front of us at the service counter was a women with a tRump mask in her hand. The biggest anti-mask covidiot in Edmond is the owner of Conscious Community Co-op, an organic grocer. There's a big overlap in the organic/natural crowd and antivaxxers/antimaskers. Out of curiosity, was this the Natural Grocers in Edmond proper (33rd and Blvd) or the one that's technically OKC, but services west Edmond (164th and Western)? That one is terrible in terms of compliance/safety measure when I checked them out, and while they have signage saying masks are required, there's no attempt at enforcement. The problem is, will OKC enforce the mandate there? TheTravellers 09-21-2020, 01:58 PM The Natural Grocers isn't a surprise to me. They were testing the generator so the store was dark. Usually that is one of the best stores as far as social distance/masking. I also went to Locke supple in Edmond to get a water heater. About 20 or so guys in the store, plumbers/electrians staff. I was the only one wearing a mask. As I was leaving a man and looked like grown son entered the place, both wearing masks and neither looked like a contractor/plumber/electrician. I did have about 4 big guys walk toward me. I took a step back a tripped over a box in the aile way and fell. Nope nobody bothered to ask if an older lady need help or was ok or even bothered to care. I am seeing a lot of anger and lack of manners in stores these days. Bill Robertson 09-21-2020, 07:57 PM I’m a statistics nut so as of late the higher case numbers, while high, have been somewhat expected and explainable. The last couple days of hospitalizations however are very, very bad. FighttheGoodFight 09-21-2020, 08:36 PM 628 in the hospital. Highest since August 5th. Bill Robertson 09-21-2020, 08:45 PM Another example of people just being done with it. I’m a HUGE baseball fan. And a bigger CARDINALS fan. Baseball made rules for beginning the short season that masks had be worn unless actually on the field and no sunflower seeds or spitting in general. Well, screw that both teams playing tonight have maybe 90% mask wearing in the dugouts and there’s lots of spitting going on out in the field. The Cards missed almost 3 weeks for players testing positive, It’s completely insane. kukblue1 09-21-2020, 09:08 PM Wonder what caused a spike in Hospitals? Honestly I never really understood how they almost stayed the same for weeks. I would there would be more fluctuation in the numbers than what there has been. Mott 09-21-2020, 10:08 PM Because you (not you, personally, but they) are an idiot? It’s like sitting in a room of second hand smoke and you don’t smoke. What’s political about getting cancer? pw405 09-22-2020, 12:07 AM Totals September averaging over 900 cases/day. Blowing the previous records set in July and August completely out of the water. Deaths, however, currently projected to "only" be second most deadly month for OK with an estimated 211 people dead. How many of these cases can be attributed to the inclusion of rapid tests, I don't believe there is a way to know at this time. Anybody know if the OSDH has released any info on this? https://i.imgur.com/GbRQsFg.png?1 Trends I marked when the change in counting methodology occurred for reference. The seven-day new case average has quite literally gone off this chart, setting a new all-time high. I didn't think I'd ever need to expand the Y axis range again... yet, here we are. Seven day average deaths still seem rangebound between 6-10. Hopefully they will stay down. I wouldn't bet on it. https://i.imgur.com/MH0kVXr.png Looking only at cases averages... yep, bad news.
