New live music venue and brewery planned for west downtown
(https://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=666-New-live-music-venue-and-brewery-planned-for-west-downtown)
Riding the wave of a substantial enhancement of the local music scene over just the last two years, a new venue seeks to fill an unmet need.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/shine1.jpg

Stephen Tyler and Chad Whitehead, operating partners of the Tower Theatre and Ponyboy, plan to open a new 500-person capacity live music space to compliment their other two venues.

Tyler explained that due to recently-developed booking relationships, they often have the need to accommodate artists that draw crowds of different sizes. The Tower is best suited for the larger audiences and Ponyboy is now booking acts in a more intimate setting in their second-level space.

The new spot will slot between the two and be part of a large redevelopment project that will also include a brewery and taproom and restaurant and retail space.

The venue will be called Beer City Music Hall; a reference to an Oklahoma panhandle ghost town.

The larger project is a collection of buildings at NW 2nd and Klein Avenue, to the west of Classen and just to the west of booming Film Row.

The redevelopment will be by the Pivot Project which is also behind the Oklahoma Distillery (https://www.okctalk.com/showthread.php?t=45264&highlight=distillery) that is now under construction, and the Sunshine Laundry renovation. All three are west of Classen in what is now a new urban frontier with investors starting to snatch up many of the character-rich properties.

As part of the larger development, Fair-Weather Friend will be opening a new brewery and taproom. Husband and wife Adrienne and Reed Jaskula will be fulfilling a decade-long dream after each working for highly-regarded local breweries.

Adrienne has been the VP of Sales for nearby Stonecloud and Reed the Head Brewer for Prairie OKC in Automobile Alley.

Fair-Weather Friend plans to focus on highly crafted beers such as sours and IPA's. The brewery will operate on a 7-barrel system and the enclosed taproom will feature modern décor and accommodate 80 to 90 guests. The taproom will open to an exterior patio and a large common area which will be family and dog-friendly with toys, games and activities.

The Jaskula's also plan to offer food but beer will be their main focus and will only distribute their beers through this new facility.

The entire project should be completed next year.

That entire area west of Classen, north of the boulevard and south of Linwood has tons of great old industrial buildings overflowing with character.

Developers and investors have been buying them up and it really is the next urban frontier.

I've always fantasized about buying all of the property in this area. Main Street west of Classen feels like it could be a bar area like 6th Street in Austin. I'd love to see some development in this area, and what an amazing project this is!

This is cool but I wish the Boulevard was designed better. If the new boulevard was entirely grade separated being elevated or subterranean it would be much easier to walk down Klein from the Farmers Market District.

Hopefully the momentum in this area continues to spread West and North. The old Lone Star brewing company building on N. Douglas (top, center of bottom picture) has tons of potential.

The metal buildings in the distant background?

Was originally Robberson Steel; now owned by Climate Craft but it appears they only use the buildings at the west end of the property.

Completely badass.

Could be converted into something incredibly cool.

Credit to the Pivot Project guys for first doing an incredible job with the Sunshine Laundry building and now undertaking this project which will hopefully kick-start others.

Properties have been purchased by others but this would be the first real project.

When I first moved downtown there wasn’t a single thing happening west of Lee. Downtown fell off a cliff at that street. When 21c was first announced a lot of people were wondering why anyone would invest that amount of money in such a desolate area. That was only like 6 or 7 years ago. Now projects like this are starting to kick off west of Classen. That kind of progress blows my mind.

That's a great reminder as it's easy to forget how bad that area was (or at least almost completely abandoned) just a few years ago.

Still lots of potential but now that development has jumped Classen, hopefully we'll see more.

Credit to Hall Capital for taking that big leap with 21c, Jones and West Village; and now Pivot Project with Sunshine Laundry and this project.

We're fortunate to have so many in this community to stick their necks out and put their own skin in the game to transform this city.

I spoke to the Fair Weather Friend Brewery people and they said they hope to open in June. They will also be serving food.

Beer City Music Hall remains on hold; that is backed by the Tower Theatre guys and they are just trying to hang in until things get better and they can start booking at the Tower.

There will also be a restaurant in this complex which should open this summer.

They're going to be fine. The shuttered venue program in the latest rescue package will ensure the survival (and thriving future) of well-managed venues. And they are BEYOND well-managed.

Beer City announced their first two shows today, Andy Shauf on 3/5 and The Antlers on 5/14. This venue is looking to fill the exact niche in the OKC music scene that I hoped it would. Sad that I’ll be out of town for the Andy Shauf show but would definitely recommend that to anyone who’s into singer/songwriter shows.

Some really good stuff coming up. In addition to the two you mentioned, here’s some other good ones in the next few months:

3/5 - Andy Shauf & Yves Jarvis @ Tower
3/12 - Sun June & Katy Kirby @ 89th Street
3/19 - Husbands, Labrys, & Ken Pomeroy @ Tower
3/25 - Jose Gonzalez & Jess Williamson @ Tower
4/22 - Dummy, Lust Online, & Primal Brain @ Speakeasy
4/29 - DIIV & Babeheaven @ NMF
4/30 - Wet & Blushing @ NMF
5/7 - Car Seat Headrest & Bartees Strange @ Tower
5/8 - Hovvdy & Molly Parden @ 89th Street
5/14 - The Antlers @ Beer City
5/15 - Destroyer & Rosali @ Beer City

Probably the strongest stretch of concerts I can remember in OKC. Not to mention there was just an amazing sold-out Lucy Dacus & Indigo De Souza show at Tower last night.

Yeah I’m hoping to get there early enough tomorrow night to get into their limited capacity opening. Don’t really care what local bands they’ll have playing (though I’m sure whomever it is will be good), just want to check out the venue. Otherwise I’ll be at the Pinegrove/Katy Kirby show on 4/22 for sure. Looks like they are really going to have a wide variety of shows at this place, which is great.
