View Full Version : General Weather Discussion - August 2019
Anonymous. 07-31-2019, 04:40 PM Temperature relief looks likely coming for the weekend, knocking highs from near 100 back toward low 90s - maybe even an 88 or 89 on Sunday.
The precipitation forecast that once looked decent is looking worse each day. We may get some showers or storms Friday into Saturday, but the best chance will be across the NE half of OK with some storm complexes moving out of KS into the Tulsa region and points southward.
The death ridge will not be shifting as far SW as it looked previously, and in fact - it looks like it will build strength across TX and OK heading into the back half of next week. So highs in C OK will return to near 100 by Thursday and I think we could see some of the hottest days of the year with highs nearing the 105-110F range by next weekend.
Next potential rain and temperature relief looks to be around August 15ish.

This is some really good news. I love these hot temps and no rain. It’s perfect for the lake and pool.
okatty 07-31-2019, 10:35 PM ^absolutely perfect....if it was 20 degrees cooler!:)
Bunty 08-01-2019, 05:45 PM It's shaping up to be a very rainy weekend for most of the eastern half of Oklahoma.

Anonymous. 08-02-2019, 09:30 AM Short-range models shifting storm chances further west for overnight Friday and for the day Saturday. Indications of perhaps some heavy rain in localized areas where storms train over the same paths. MOvement will be NW to S SE.

Bunty 08-02-2019, 04:11 PM FLOOD WATCH out. Doesn't include OKC. Included is northeast and east central Oklahoma:
Effective: Fri, 8/2 2:00pm Updated: Fri, 8/2 4:00pm Urgency: Future
Expires: Sun, 8/4 2:50am Severity: Moderate Certainty: Possible
Details:
...Flooding Possible Tonight into Saturday...
...FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE THIS EVENING THROUGH SATURDAY
AFTERNOON...
The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a
* Flood Watch for flash flooding...flooding of creeks and
rivers...and flooding of low lying areas for portions of central
Oklahoma, east central Oklahoma, northern Oklahoma, and
southeast Oklahoma
* From late this evening through Saturday afternoon.
* Heavy rainfall associated with widespread showers and
thunderstorms late this evening into Saturday.
* Avoid areas that normally flood during heavy rain and do not
drive into areas where water covers the road. Flooding is very
hard to see at night, so use extreme caution if you are
traveling at night.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.
You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Anonymous. 08-02-2019, 04:36 PM Short-range models both develop rain and storms near C OK.
NAM puts storms hitting OKC, possible severe with wind and hail. HRRR puts storms just off to the E of OKC, maybe a rogue cell or two developing along outflow boundaries affecting the metro.
NAM:

Bunty 08-03-2019, 11:46 AM As of noon, rainfall amounts are concentrating in a very heavy way in a fairly narrow band between Oklahoma City and Tulsa or really more like stretching between the Kansas and Texas borders. The east side of Stillwater has gone over 2 inches. OKC may get some rain if things directly to the north hold together.

brian72 08-03-2019, 06:55 PM Another bait and switch for the local weather news. Every day the extended forecast changes. So why do it?
DCARS 08-04-2019, 11:15 AM Absolutely dry as a powder house in Del City. Not a drop.
Anonymous. 08-07-2019, 10:45 AM Highs still around 100F for most of C OK. The exceptions will be days and areas that have some type of cloud cover based on rain and storms.
Very weak chances of rain and storms in C OK for the next couple days as there will be an outside shot at some NW flow action coming out of KS. However, this will primarily be across NE OK. Overnight Thursday looks to be the best chance for OKC to get any amount of rain (pictured below).
Otherwise still 100+ heading through the weekend. Long-range outlook: maybe some temperature and precipitation relief coming Monday night.

Not sure who OKC pissed off to get missed by all this rain that Tulsa and east OK is getting. Maybe OKC is too liberal for voting for Kendra Horn :p
Anonymous. 08-08-2019, 08:01 AM Rain and storms just off to the W of C OK, these are trying their hardest to develop east and eat into the ridge of death, but are likely to fail. Models expect to see them weaken and fizzle out over the morning hours. We will at least get the cloud cover to help cap high temperatures.
Another chance at more rain and storms tonight, but like mentioned earlier - the chances are very low here in C OK.
jn1780 08-08-2019, 03:44 PM There is a strange liquid falling from the sky here in Bricktown. May be rain. lol

SEMIweather 08-08-2019, 07:30 PM Today was a really nice day, and tomorrow may not be so bad either, but man, the extended range looks absolutely brutal besides a brief reprieve around the middle of next week.
Anonymous. 08-09-2019, 05:33 AM Showers and storms from overnight are traveling a little further to the south and west than forecast. This should give OKC a better shot at some. Especially north and east sides of the metro.
Definitely will cap temperatures down before a brutally hot weekend.
Jim Kyle 08-09-2019, 07:08 AM Definitely a light show last night, and loudenboomers outside right now. This is near NW 122 and Council.
1.5 inches in my rain gauge near Penn Square.

WhoRepsTheLurker 08-09-2019, 08:46 AM So much for the sprinkles the local weather guys were talking about, LOL! This whole bait and switch by local meterologists is just a ploy to get viewer numbers...

Bunty 08-09-2019, 01:24 PM 1.5 inches in my rain gauge near Penn Square.

Moisture from saturated ground will be extra brutal with the expected 100s next week.
Anonymous. 08-09-2019, 04:48 PM As I mentioned last week, I said this weekend could be the hottest OKC has seen so far this year. Today's moisture will help to prevent the air temperature from getting too out of hand, but it will make the heat index worse. So it will not only be one of the hottest actual air temperatures, but it will easily feel the hottest. This will be for both Saturday and Sunday.
This will be a "in a pool or indoors weekend".

It's already BRUTAL out there today now that the sun's back out. Not even 90 degrees, but it feels absolutely awful with dewpoints in the mid 70's.
Anonymous. 08-13-2019, 10:47 AM Nice little drink from these weak showers associated with the tiny system moving across OK right now. Sun is already back out across W OK, though. So OKC should be in the sun again by late afternoon.
The real story is a break from 100s. We will be in the low 90s Wednesday and climb back into mid 90s by the weekend.

FighttheGoodFight 08-13-2019, 01:26 PM Good weather. Some relief is wonderful.
Anonymous. 08-17-2019, 02:04 PM Very small chance of a thunderstorm or two later this evening across C OK. And again in the early morning hours Sunday. If anything does develop, it could be severe.
However, chance is low, and coverage will be extremely localized. Consider yourself lucky if you get rain.
jonny d 08-17-2019, 02:07 PM How will Ian Drake's beloved Ridge of Death be around?
SEMIweather 08-17-2019, 11:54 PM Nice light show to the south and west of Downtown this evening.
gopokes88 08-19-2019, 08:42 PM It is hot.
SEMIweather 08-19-2019, 09:45 PM But on the plus side, temperature looks to drop a shade each day over the next week or so.
Anonymous. 08-21-2019, 01:00 PM Temperature relief comes tomorrow. Slight chance of isolated shower and storm anywhere in the state for the next few days. Nothing significant expected.
We may be done with 100s.
SEMIweather 08-21-2019, 07:13 PM Looks like we're about 7-10 days away from a real break from the heat, hopefully just in time for the holiday weekend.
Greggo71 08-22-2019, 03:49 PM With the exception of Sunday, the next week will be a nice change of pace:

jonny d 08-23-2019, 09:34 AM My poor house by Tinker. Hardly got any rain. Figures, though. Glad the rest of the city got a nice drink.
There was a wicked storm that slammed through my place near Penn Square early last evening.
Very high winds and a near typhoon for a good 20 minutes or so.
2 inches in my rain gauge in a very short period of time.
FighttheGoodFight 08-23-2019, 10:16 AM Yep. Loud and a lot of rain in Norman last night. Lot of people lost power. Weather feels amazing outside now!
okatty 08-23-2019, 12:08 PM I was on Kilpatrick (east side) about 8 last night and it was the hardest rain i ever recall trying to drive it. Cars were off to the side of the highway. And past Macarthur (westbound) it was almost dry.

We're just north of Penn Square and can attest to the description. Rain soaked its way through our windows onto the sills and in from some exterior wall weakness.
CloudDeckMedia 08-23-2019, 04:28 PM I was 1/2 mile west of PSM, and it blew branches from trees, covered cars in leaves, lots of lightning, and that rain!
Bunty 08-23-2019, 10:38 PM The area stretching from Payne and Lincoln Counties to the Arkansas border got the most rain from the last two nights.

Anonymous. 08-26-2019, 09:08 PM I am out of town once again when weather is hitting OKC.
Looking at radar on mobile. It seems like large storm complex will continue to sag down across OKC metro. There is a boundary that is anchoring this development across the area and it could possibly create a flooding threat if storms continue to develop over the same area throughout the night.
Brief spinups are possible along the leading edge of this complex. Heavy rain and hail will be the main threat. Enjoy the drink!
Hollywood 08-26-2019, 09:32 PM Payne issuing radar indicated tornado just north of Oaktree
I was staged at Waterloo and Broadway and there were several good size power flashes at that point at mile to a mile and half to my west, southwest. Wouldn’t have surprised me if there was a spin up among the wind that blew through at that time.
Anonymous. 08-26-2019, 09:34 PM Looks like the supercell is collapsing and the air rushing out of the column is coming down to the surface. Damaging winds will likely sweep across majority of the area if they haven’t already.
SEMIweather 08-26-2019, 09:48 PM This storm is absolutely crazy. Unbelievable rain, wind, and lightning.
OKC Guy 08-26-2019, 09:50 PM My goodness this storm will not stop! An hour long so far the noise is just amazing. Wind driven rain with scattered hail. Had it been bigger hail my windows would be gone. Sustained storming. Still raining hard at least 2 inches and still going. Luckily still have power but had 2 spikes lucky my stuff is on battery backups. This is NW OKC
