Casey's General Stores to enter OKC market (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=492-Casey-s-General-Stores-to-enter-OKC-market)
After decades of very little ambitious challenge in Central Oklahoma, 7-Eleven is getting another serious competitor as Iowa-based Casey's General Store is set to enter the Oklahoma City market.

Building permits have been filed for the southwest corner of Wilshire and Council and the northwest corner of Cemetary Road and Reno. Permits show plans to include extensive kitchens in addition to the standard fuel and convenience items.
The move comes as Stillwater-based OnCue Express continues its aggressive expansion in the Oklahoma City area, while 7-Eleven is building more of its own expanded concept stores.
The 111 7-Eleven local locations are owned by the Brown family of OKC and are unrelated to other stores in the international chain.
Casey's had previously focused on small towns but of late has been making a push into suburban and even urban settings. There are 18 locations in Oklahoma, most in the Tulsa area.

The bigger and more modern Casey's store design emphasizes highly profitable and fast-growing sales of prepared food and fountain drinks, an industry-wide strategy as sales of lower-margin convenience items and fuel sales slow.
OnCue is also adding kitchens to many of their locations after first piloting the program in the 15th and I-35 location in Edmond. Permits have been filed to add prepared food areas to stores at I-40 and MacArthur, 23rd and Santa Fe, SE 29th & Douglas and I-35 and Waterloo.
Like OnCue and QuikTrip, Casey's prepares pizza, burgers, subs, and breakfast sandwiches and the local 7-Elevens have been adding kitchens to its newer, larger locations.

Calls to Casey's headquarters were not returned but the company's typical strategy is to open a dozen or more locations once in enters a metro area, either through new construction or acquisition.

stile99 04-26-2018, 07:32 AM Huzzah!
They have a very good rep and I know a lot of people like their pizza.
u50254082 04-26-2018, 09:29 AM First visited one of these while on business in Des Moines. Very nice stores!
catch22 04-26-2018, 09:34 AM I hope this will hurt 7/11 more than it will OnCue.
Zuplar 04-26-2018, 09:38 AM I hope this will hurt 7/11 more than it will OnCue.
It will.
All this competition finally forces OK 7-11's to bring their stores up to a reasonable standard. Their newer concept stores are much better, although I still prefer OnCue.
jerrywall 04-26-2018, 09:39 AM Interesting. Casey's, IIRC, typically chooses smaller, rural towns. This is an interesting change, although I notice the locations are remote from city center, so may still be targeting the same sort of market.
It's amazing that it's taken this long for companies to exploit the generally horrible job 7-Eleven has done while dominating this market.
But now that there is real competition, 7-Eleven has been pretty slow to respond and I'm sure for most it's a case of too little, too late.

Yeah... I haven't set foot in a 7-11 since the one on Shields and the one on 4th in Moore opened.
I will say that the new 7-11 on 4th in Moore (the one the tornado destroyed) is generally busy but the OnCue at 4th and I-35 is killing it at the gas pumps. I don't know the exact count on the pumps, 30+ I would guess, but they are always near capacity.
All the OnCues seem very busy to me, almost all the time.
That business has to be coming mainly at the expense of 7-Eleven.
And even the Circle K's that have been closing... Those are pretty much of the same lowly standard and very different from those operated in California and elsewhere.
This reminds me of hungry predatory animals sensing weak prey and the smell of blood. The feast is on!
OnCue has a bunch more locations in the OKC area already teed up, several not previously revealed. They seem to be picking up momentum as time goes on.
And you can bet Casey's will do a dozen or more OKC area locations before long. Once they enter a market, they tend to come strong.
chuck5815 04-26-2018, 10:50 AM I'm not really on board with the idea of eating food prepared in a gas station, but I know a lot of folks back east who regularly eat at WaWa, Sheetz, etc. To each his own, I suppose.
jerrywall 04-26-2018, 11:03 AM The traditionally poor quality of OKC metro gas stations makes me wonder why Hutch's hasn't spread further east in the state.
u50254082 04-26-2018, 11:11 AM An odd side benefit of these larger gas stations is a much larger awning. When that golfball sized hail starts pouring, I always look for an OnCue to shelter under.
Can't say that about 7-11..

Yeah, when the first new 7-11 concept store opened on Macarthur, I immediately realized they had dropped the ball by not extending the awning all the way to the store. My car gets hot easily, so when it's 100 degrees outside, I sure as heck don't want to park my car in the sun for even a few minutes if I can avoid it.
ultimatesooner 04-26-2018, 03:04 PM lots of Circle K's closing lately - i wonder if Casey's is buying some of those locations.
I travel through rural KS quite a bit - the Caseys are the closest you can get the QT/OnCue

Growing up in Kansas any time we went on a road trip and through a town with a Caseys, we always had to stop and get a donut. I'm not sure why, but it was a thing with my parents.
stick47 04-28-2018, 07:45 AM Going in on the NW corner of Hwy 92 / Cemetery Road and Reno.

stile99 04-28-2018, 07:55 AM You know KFOR got that story from this very thread, right? They mention it in the article, and credit this site for the photo.
stick47 04-28-2018, 08:44 AM Don't see why the post I made in the Yukon Mustang section was moved. One would think that a item about a new business would be appropriate to be listed in the 'specific' section for those items. Where else would people go to see what all that construction is about? :headscrat

KFOR and OKCTalk have a partnership.

We can add it back once we have a building permit and construction starts.
For now, let's please just keep this all in one spot.

That was the point. Like I said, it is mentioned directly in the article.
stick47 04-28-2018, 09:32 AM 13001 W Reno building permit was issued Jan 12, 2018
13001 W Reno building permit was issued Jan 12, 2018
It was applied for, not issued.
Casey's hasn't even bought the property yet.
stick47 04-28-2018, 09:37 AM Well there's 3 or 4 permits for that location since January plus the city is about the complete a 4 lane intersection there and with the area filling up with new homes I expect the requests to build will be approved if not already so.

That's how I felt too but when I lived in Hastings, NE, Casey's was one of the better pizza chains in town. People can order from Casey's and they often delivered to the local area.

I lived in south east Kansas for a year and a half for work, Casey's is great and exactly like you said- a scaled down version of QT/OnCue. I've always thought it was kind of funny that the closest convenience store to my house in rural Kansas was easily x10 superior to the closest one to me in the middle of OKC.
Casey's just filed planning permits for the SW corner of SW 149th & Western.
That's at least 3 OKC-area locations actively in the works.
Ginkasa 05-30-2018, 06:01 PM Nice. That one's on the way to work.
Casey's just filed for a building permit for the NE corner fo SW 134th and Penn.
That would be #4 in the OKC area:
SWC Wilshire and Council
NWC Cemetary and Reno
SWC Western and SW 149th
NEC Penn and 134th
Another Casey's building permit application, this time at NW Expressway and Mustang Road.
That is #6 for the area; 7 if you count one about to open in El Reno. The others have yet to start construction.

They must not be in any hurry on the Wilshire & Council location, there are a good amount of horses and structures on that land every day I drive by.

Where was the fifth one? Your last post said there was 4.
Here is the latest list:
10805 N Council
1685 SW 134
15001 S. Western
8000 W. Wilshire
13001 W. Reno
12500 N Mustang Rd
1001 S Country Club, El Reno
Tavia 03-24-2019, 05:09 PM Looks like Casey's General Store has purchased property on the NE corner of SW 134th and Penn and also on the SW corner of SW 149th and Western.
Soonerman 05-08-2019, 06:59 PM So, Has Casey's started building in OKC yet??
jonny d 05-08-2019, 08:03 PM There is one in Seminole, OK on 99.
cbing04 06-26-2019, 11:25 AM Finally getting a quality gas station in Yukon! Casey's General Store is breaking ground at Reno Ave and N Cemetery Rd. If you haven't had their pizza you are missing out. Will take over as the best place to get quality pizza in the west metro.

stile99 06-26-2019, 12:41 PM I'll take you up on that. I've gotten into the habit of getting a pie from Luigiano's when I'm in the mood for non chain. Casey's is going to have to bring it and bring it hard.

They're finally breaking ground on that store. I was wondering if it was going to get built or not. I was expecting ground breaking right after the intersection rebuild was complete.
They have about 8 building permits ready to be issued all over OKC.
They may have been waiting to start them all at once, or at least in close succession.

Thanks, I hadn’t kept up. Nice to see competition too.

SW 44th & Mustang
1001 S Country Club, El Reno (open)
Soonerman 06-28-2019, 01:14 PM Surely Casey's will come to Norman soon.
^
They may very well have applied for building permits in Norman, Edmond and elsewhere because permit data from cities other than OKC is somewhat difficult to track.
I suspect there are more Casey's in progress, as they typically prefer out-lying areas.

Somewhere in Piedmont is basically screaming for a Casey's, IMO.

That location should kill it, so many rooftops out there
Brett 07-07-2019, 06:45 PM I drove out to the El Reno (Country Club & Elm) Casey's General Store to grab a large bacon cheeseburger pizza. Not bad at all and I will definitely go back again. The store is very clean. The only disappointment was that some of the machines that dispense ice cream or beverages were out of order.
WhoRepsTheLurker 08-02-2019, 02:45 PM Site work has started at the SW 134th and S Penn location.
DBCooper 08-02-2019, 02:57 PM Site work has started at the SW 134th and S Penn location.
Exciting!
Quicker 08-02-2019, 09:57 PM I hadn’t noticed that location was on the list but I also noticed today that work had started and a sign had gone up. It’s right across the street from a busy older 7-11, There’s no doubt they’ll take a big hit... I live pretty close by and it’ll be a nice new option...
rte66man 08-03-2019, 07:55 AM 8000 W Wilshire is under construction. On the SW corner of Council and Wilshire and directly south of a recently reconstructed 7-11. OnCue and Caseys are really forcing 7-11 to up their game
MagzOK 08-06-2019, 08:52 AM Most Casey's I've stopped at on our trip to Virginia Beach have been dirty, nasty, rundown, and broken. They are everywhere through Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia on the way. They are nothing at all like the OnCue's. None of the one's I've stopped at were new at all so I can't say I've ever been to a new one, but I am not impressed at all by what I've seen.
artynok 09-01-2019, 09:57 PM Site work has started at the South Western location.
Casey's just filed a building permit application for the NW corner of NW 150th and Santa Fe.
Interestingly, an older 7/11 is directly south at that same intersection and an OnCue is one mile to the east on Kelley.
Looks like they are ready to take on the big boys in town.
Not counting the El Reno store which is already open, this would make 12 Casey's planned for the OKC area and that number keeps going up.
