View Full Version : General Weather Discussion - March 2019
Anonymous. 02-28-2019, 08:29 AM Starting the March thread now due to the next events coming up.
Friday will be decent with highs approaching 50F.
Saturday will be one of those days that gradually gets colder as the day goes on. Saturday night we will likely see drizzle and light rain showers develop across a large majority of the state and temperatures will fall to and just below freezing after nightfall. This will turn to freezing rain late Saturday night into Sunday morning. At this time, it appears majority of impacts will be felt across N and NE OK.
The big story will be the temperatures behind the precipitation. Sunday we will barely make it into the mid 20s and there will be 15+mph winds. Monday morning lows will be near single digits with a stout north wind putting windchills into the negatives. Monday OKC may not reach 20F. Tuesday morning lows will likely be in the teens and highs for Tuesday will get to about freezing.
After this weekend, the next shot at precipitation appears to be the following weekend.

Trying not to get my hopes up too much regarding spring arriving on time this year. It's starting to look like I'm going to have to end up cancelling my spring break plans if another winter storm comes through next weekend.

Now that we're in the evening, I'm curious to hear your thoughts about how likely you think the temperature forecast will verify for tomorrow? Today's forecast originally called for a high of 39°F in OKC but the mercury didn't rise anywhere close to 30°F. NWS also seems to think we'll hit 50°F on Friday. The Rapid Refresh model is consistently showing colder temps for the same forecast hour than both NAM and GFS, though - showing an air temp of 29°F by 10AM tomorrow, whereas NAM predicts air temps in the mid 30's and GFS predicts low 40's by that point.
Easy180 02-28-2019, 08:48 PM I will fall out of my chair if it hits 40 tomorrow. Forecast models have failed so many times now with pushing this arctic bs outta here I ain’t buying it tomorrow.
Anonymous. 02-28-2019, 09:42 PM 40s are likely for OKC. If the sun can break through, we can touch 50. Some models keep low-level clouds, thus temperatures capped near 40. Regardless, it will feel like a warm front considering the last few days and the upcoming few days.
BoulderSooner 02-28-2019, 09:44 PM Why did it not get much past 25 today. When the forecast was for mid upper 30’s??
SEMIweather 02-28-2019, 10:16 PM Why did it not get much past 25 today. When the forecast was for mid upper 30’s??
The stratus never cleared out like the models were predicting, which has been something of a consistent trend this winter. Between this, and arctic fronts moving in more quickly and further south than modeled, there have been so many temperatures busts over the last two months.
Where skies did clear over far western Oklahoma late in the afternoon, temperatures did manage to rise into the 40s.

Thanks. So seems like with the extra cold yesterday. Today’s new high is in the low 40’s. Hopefully we get there
OkieHornet 03-01-2019, 09:59 AM NWS now predicts a high of 35 today with this caveat: "Tricky temperature forecast today. Clouds will impact the amount of warm up today."

SEMIweather 03-01-2019, 07:54 PM The OKC East Mesonet site got all the way up to 38F today, which is as warm as it's been since Tuesday, and as warm as it'll be until probably next Wednesday. Not great...

SoonerDave 03-02-2019, 01:45 PM So are there any updates regarding the kind/qty of winter precip may be happening overnight?
sacolton 03-02-2019, 07:19 PM Looks like another bust. Just a cold Sunday ... no major "winter storm" or "ice storm". Even the windy part was removed from tomorrows forecast. Just 25 degrees chilly. (But those ratings ... whooo!)
SoonerDave 03-02-2019, 07:46 PM The latest GFS runs make it a little hard to be absolute either way about precip overnight. A blob starts around midnight near Woodward, and extends roughly south to Amarillo, but the next iteration six hours later.shows the blob east and northeast of central OK. The way the blob swings through - riding a wave going west to ENE, could leave OKC bone dry or give us the southern edge of the system as it passes. I'm no expert, but I don't think we can tell from these runs absolutely either way for OKC - precip or no.

Every hi res hourly model shows almost nothing. Just a trace of precipitation at this point. Nam, Hrrr, Gem, Wrf.... Looks like a bust in terms of precipitation.
Ian Drake 03-02-2019, 10:09 PM Mark my words, it will be a super-bustapalooza for moisture...
OKC Guy 03-02-2019, 10:15 PM The damger is the cold. Mon morning shows 7-9 depending and high on Mon is 24 and another cold 12-15 Tue morning. Lots of under 32 clock time so watch the pipes thats the real worry

Posted five hours before Sunday even hits. Then Sunday hits and we get the forecasted glazing of ice with less than an inch of snow on top. There was no ice storm forecasted by anybody at any time in the last week.
Awwww, how cute! We have another weather troll! We're getting quite the collection.
Plutonic Panda 03-03-2019, 07:29 AM Meteorologist don't know sh!t. They've gotten the weather wrong every day since I've been here the last few weeks. Why do people believe this nonsense. What a joke!

Words marked. You were wrong. That is all.
Easy180 03-03-2019, 08:33 AM I didn’t see any tv mets posting over an inch. All said iit was moving too fast to get much and the worst part would be the cold. It turned out to be moving fast, dropped frozen precip from the sky and it’s cold as shi* so I’m guessing they nailed this one.
OKC Guy 03-03-2019, 09:23 AM They got this one right and we are now in deep freeze til sometime Tue.
Drip lots of water tonight and its cheaper to spend a few bucks more for water than a busted pipe expense. I’ll also leave mine dripping all day Mon so no surprises later.

I’ll also leave mine dripping all day Mon so no surprises later. They did get this system right. Every model pretty much agreed so they would have to have gone way out on a limb to disagree. But if you look at the last week of forecasted highs and clouds vs sun they missed big time.
Bunty 03-03-2019, 04:35 PM Early Sunday morning, it came a heavy dusting of snow in Stillwater (not freezing rain this time) and once again the Stillwater Emergency Management Director gave another tour of road conditions in Stillwater, mostly on the outskirts. Here are some of the more interesting points on this very long video.
1. 33.00 - Drive to the airport with a stop to watch the American Eagle get deiced.
2. 44:00 - Gate opened for a better look.
3. 1:37.00 - Pickup truck speeds past director and soon later slides past red light.
4. 2:15.00 - Director himself kinda has close call, but salted intersection saves the day. He proceeds to the interior part of town.
5. 2:18:30 - Director makes sudden turn to check out why two cop cars are stopped in the middle of Main St.
A good number of out of state and international people were viewing. Stillwater was mostly asleep.

Anonymous. 03-03-2019, 09:50 PM Some dry snowbands developing right now out in W OK and SW KS. These will stream overhead in random areas over the state tonight into Monday morning. Nothing meaningful coming from them, just dry wispy snowflakes.

Anonymous. 03-07-2019, 08:16 AM Mild today for Thursday. Obviously it is windy too, because you can't have a nice day in OK without at least 15mph winds.
Friday will be mild ahead of a storm, which will attempt to develop showers/storms either west of, or directly over I-44 corridor. So depending on how soon anything develops, it may not affect OKC. Best chances are E OK.
After that, we will be windy and mild for the first half of Saturday before winds switch out of the NW and blast in cooler air. Sunday will be decent with highs in the low 50s.
The next storm will be right on its heels as a large system comes out of the SW Rockies. This will likely be our first legitimate taste at some severe weather for late Monday and especially Tuesday. Including possibly flooding rains.

Anonymous. 03-11-2019, 11:13 AM We should see rain develop late tonight across NW TX into W OK. This will stream across the main part of the state into Tuesday morning. After that we will have a slight break before the main precipitation piece of the storm comes through Wednesday. We will be mild and strong S winds before the rain and storms. At this time, it looks like any Severe potential should be confined to far SW OK.
Strong north winds will come in behind the storm system and make Thursday not so great.
Weather for weekend looks like upper 40s and sunshine or low 50s.

At least the storm doesn't have much warm sunshine to work with.
Anonymous. 03-12-2019, 10:21 PM Our eventual line of rain and storms has formed across W TX. This will continue all night and impact our area Wednesday. Impacts in C OK will be around daybreak or a little after. Temperatures will be very mild and humid ahead of the rain and turn warm and dry behind the line.
After the storms, we will have extremely gusty winds out of the S and SW likely carrying dust and pollens with it. Temperatures could reach near 70F with sunshine and the strong south winds.
As we head into Wednesday night we will have strong winds shift to come from the NW and eventual N as the low passes through SW KS. This will set up thursday for being much cooler with blustery north winds.

I know! Woke me up a couple times. Just like the forecast said. Isn't it funny how the trolls keep coming in before the day even starts and declaring the forecast a bust, then exactly what the forecast said would happen, happens? They're so dumb they think this is a weather website, how cute.
gopokes88 03-13-2019, 07:48 AM Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I’ve read and been told
Winter weather= so many factors constantly changing its barely worth predicting.
Spring weather= they can nail with 90% accuracy.
brian72 03-13-2019, 08:28 AM Broken clock is right twice a day.
mugofbeer 03-13-2019, 12:34 PM Be happy. Right now it's blinding snow and 50 - 60 mph wind at my house in Denver. Limon, CO out east of Denver showed the lowest barometric pressure they'd ever recorded earlier today.
Anonymous. 03-13-2019, 01:05 PM Storm has been picking up speed the last 24 hours. This means less colder air being poured down behind it. So the weekend weather looks like it will be closer to mid or even upper 50s and sunshine on Saturday (with virtually no wind). Sunday looks like highs in the 60s with weak south winds.
Green beer is on the menu!
