View Full Version : Restaurant closings
timothy.a.owen 04-13-2020, 02:36 PM Important question. Which pizza places ( besides Dominoes, Pizza Hut, Marcos and that ilk) are still open?
By my count, Empire, Sauced, Hideaway, Upper Crust all closed.
Gabriella's still open and good pizza, but any other local places?
It looks like based on their Websites/Facebook pages that Empire... Sauced... and Hideaway are all still open.
I did Birra Birra last night - I would recommend the pizza over the chicken parm, but both were good! :)
TheTravellers 04-13-2020, 03:31 PM As in, one set of toppings on one side, another set on the other? I assumed that was available based on the ordering UI but have not tried it. It had the typical half circle, full circle, half circle per topping buttons I would expect for that functionality.
Yeah, half Paradise Pie, half ATW. Didn't want to screw with building our own by clicking the toppings one-by-one, so ordered by phone instead, much quicker.
ATW is my favorite pizza of all time. It's the perfect supreme.
Bill Robertson 04-13-2020, 05:32 PM ATW is my favorite pizza of all time. It's the perfect supreme.Mine too. The wife is a Boz fan.
Hal Smith is opening all their restaurants for carryout (and most for delivery) starting Monday.
The only 2 not reopening are Toby Keith's in casinos.
Here is an example of a company getting the payroll loan and bringing its people back to work.

FighttheGoodFight 04-22-2020, 08:34 AM I am glad to see them reopening. I still wonder why they closed fully down in the first place. This will be interesting to see how they do.
David 04-22-2020, 08:45 AM A lot of other restaurants have apparently been able to maintain operations with doing takeout, I've been wondering if we were going to start seeing them close down over time but maybe the reverse will happen as various management groups figure out how to make the current situation work.
sooner88 04-22-2020, 08:48 AM I am glad to see them reopening. I still wonder why they closed fully down in the first place. This will be interesting to see how they do.
They most likely were approved for a PPP loan, which requires you to rehire employees that were in place as of 2/15.
Teo9969 04-22-2020, 11:16 PM Per Greg Horton (via Facebook), who does a lot (all?) of the food writing for 405 Magazine:
Here's the roll call so far. Please avoid swearing and shaming for now.
84 Hospitality Group not be opening for full service May 1. Curbside will continue.
A Good Egg Dining Group will not open for full service May 1. Curbside continues, and Keith said they'll focus on getting more of their concepts doing curbside.
Provision Concepts will open May 1, except for Sidecar, because it's a bar.
Chris Lower said Big Truck Tacos will resume drive-thru takeout May 1, but other concepts will not open until closer to the middle of May, and the level of service has not been decided.
Peter Holloway said his concepts will not have full service May 1. Curbside, pickup, and delivery will continue.
Jimmy Mays said The Hamilton and both Cafe 7 locations will reopen June 1. Curbside and delivery continue for now.
Magnolia Bistro Kaylee Owen says they will reopen May 1.
The Social Order Dining Collective will not reopen May 1, and no date has been determined yet.
Hal Smith Restaurants will reopen May 1.
Per Michel La Baguette Bistro will reopen May 6.
McClintock Saloon & Chop House May 1.
Per Lori Dickinson Black Cafe Evoke in Edmond will reopen for to-go May 4.
Per Crosby Dyke (below) En Croûte will continue curbside and delivery through mid-May, and likely reopen for dine-in at that time.
Chef Kurt Fleischfresser said he’s waiting to see the rules before making decisions about Western Concepts Restaurant Group and Vast.
Bruce Rinehart said he’s not yet decided on an opening date for Rococo Restaurant & Bar concepts but may do some “soft opens” to test things out beginning May 1.
Per Laveryl Lower The Metro Wine Bar & Bistro will not open May 1, but she will make an announcement soon about takeout and curbside start date.
Please note that all the rules aren't in place yet, and restaurants will be opening with as yet unknown restrictions, so keep your pitchforks and torches stowed for now, people.
I wonder what will happen to all these places planning to open on May 1 when nobody shows up?
FighttheGoodFight 04-23-2020, 08:14 AM I think the Open Everything Now crowd might be louder than those who are cautious. I am guessing these places open and see a whole lot of emptiness.
Teo9969 04-23-2020, 09:12 AM I wonder what will happen to all these places planning to open on May 1 when nobody shows up?
I think restaurants will see people come in for sure, but they'll need to run with a skeleton crew.
OKC Guy 04-23-2020, 09:16 AM I think restaurants will see people come in for sure, but they'll need to run with a skeleton crew.
Agree. Places like Clark Crew have outside eating areas and this will help a lot.

I think CCB is pretty good and it is setup for distancing, but you couldn't pay me a million dollars to go eat in there or on the patio until Summer 2021.
barrettd 04-23-2020, 11:09 AM I wonder what will happen to all these places planning to open on May 1 when nobody shows up?
I won't be sitting through a meal at a restaurant for quite some time (not that I do a lot, anyway.).
I think this is going to be the case for a lot of people. Restaurants understandably want to re-open, the government feels pressure to let them, there just won't be a ton of demand for dining-in.
jbkrems 04-23-2020, 11:19 AM What about coffee shops like Stella Nova, Starbucks, etc.?
What about coffee shops like Stella Nova, Starbucks, etc.?
I believe those count as restaurants.
Teo9969 04-23-2020, 12:43 PM I'm assuming "bar" is defined as someone with an ABC-3 license? Wondering if places like Saint's will open even though they're basically bars. You can believe the 25 and under crowd is going to be getting out as soon as this is lifted.
jbkrems 04-23-2020, 01:55 PM Pete... I was asking specifically if they plan to re-open on May 1st or not... I wasn't asking about their category.

Some Starbucks have remained open. The Stella Nova by house was closed already due to someone driving their car through the front entrance.

They can if they want since they are classified as restaurants.
crimsoncrazy 04-23-2020, 02:21 PM Saw that the Western Sizzlin in Moore and Chickasha are closing permanently.
HangryHippo 04-24-2020, 09:31 AM According to this (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_vehicle_fatality_rate_in_U.S._by_year) 36,000 people died from motor vehicle accidents in the US in the entirety of 2018. So far, 50,000 people have died from coronavirus in the US and its not even been two months.
So, kindly, shut up with your BS.
Thank you! And just because someone else died in a car accident doesn't also mean it will likely hospitalize and possibly kill someone else they passed on the way to the accident.
dankrutka 04-24-2020, 12:27 PM To me, there's going to be a decent risk for spread with almost any indoor dining. While I know the weather doesn't always cooperate, I wonder if businesses have considered converting outdoor spaces, including parking lots, into dining areas with lots of space between tables. If I were to go to a restaurant, it would be one that's taking the most precautions and being spaced out, outdoors is probably the safest option for society.
To that end, Fassler Hall might be one the best equipped concepts to make social distancing work. However, other people are likely going to be the problem. I've been at places for pick up where some people just crowd you like you're not in a pandemic even though there's plenty of space for distancing. It's frustrating.
Jersey Boss 04-24-2020, 12:32 PM No thanks for indoor concept very much. You can do all the spacing you want to indoors but the HVAC system will negate it.
Bobby821 04-24-2020, 01:39 PM It looks like the Western Sizzlin in Moore is no more. This letter was posted on another group and I am posting it here also. Not sure if all of them or closing or just these two.16011
Questor 04-25-2020, 08:57 AM Thanks for the info. I actually wonder how buffets are going to survive this. Anyone know how other buffets are doing?

I'm sorry for the closure but l'm suprised there were any of these left!
Bunty 04-26-2020, 10:32 AM I wonder what will happen to all these places planning to open on May 1 when nobody shows up?
I wouldn't be too surprised if a noticeable number of people show up, since it's been so long. I just hope that overweight older people, who may have preexisting conditions know better than to show up, though spaced outdoor patio dining might work out okay. But those are the type I frequently see in restaurants when I go out. They always put me on a guilt trip by making me wonder, if I want to keep my weight down, why the hell am I in here? Maybe the pandemic will make some of them decide to lose weight and get in shape to face a changed world. Losing weight and regularly exercising every day may make at least some bad preexisting conditions go away, such as pre-diabetes.
In coming months, the nation, the world, will be looking upon the people of Oklahoma and of a few other daring early states as guinea pigs and hoping it goes well. Sorry, but I don't see how the nation escapes from a Second Great Depression, if it doesn't.
SoonersFan12 04-26-2020, 12:45 PM Thank you for posting about Western Sizzlin, it is really a shame but I am not really surprised, their food was good back in the 90's but it went downhill since

Initially, it read as though only Moore and Chickasha were closing. But the balance of the letter sounds broader. Had read he was considering retiring before the virus hit.
And yes, sadly, the Western Sizzlin we used to frequent went abruptly downhill years ago. We stopped going.
Bunty 04-26-2020, 06:54 PM I think CCB is pretty good and it is setup for distancing, but you couldn't pay me a million dollars to go eat in there or on the patio until Summer 2021.
Not me for that long to be pent up from any popular restaurant, but I think I'll pass being one of the guinea pigs or a canary in the coal mine for the first couple of weeks. But I'm afraid that since cases are still going up that it suggests things aren't working well enough as it is. So it will be interesting to see if things don't spike. If there is bigger spike in deaths over cases that will concern me more.

Well, their model relies on serving cheap crappy food that people get themselves. So imagine they won't be doing good at all.

That really sucks!
Plutonic Panda 05-13-2020, 10:03 AM I hope they don’t close the Midwest City location. That’s the only one left in the metro.

Me too but every time I go there, it is empty
Ronnie Jackson 05-14-2020, 12:07 PM I tend to wonder about City Bites. The locations I frequent were almost never busy, even before the CV took control.

I do not know why it did not go out of business years ago? Every time I pass by City Bites in Moore, it is always empty
Chef Beth Lyon announced on Instagram that Black Cat in The Collective is closed forever.

I enjoyed it, it was one of the more expensive places at the collective.

It is a shame it closed down permanently
I'm really surprised there have been so few permanent closings.
Of course, almost everyone got the PPP government loan which will keep everyone going for 2 months.
We'll see what happens after that, but I wouldn't expect restaurant business to be anywhere near pre-covid #'s for quite some time.

I’m surprised too. So many stay open normally by the skin of their teeth or so I hear a lot.
I wonder how many that have been quiet will just fade silently away.
Some are really eerie to me. Working near the airport I go by Cimarron Steak House daily. It’s really odd to see an empty lot at lunch time.
Keep in mind, if you take the PPP money you have to spend it on employees which means you have to open.
The rest test will be in 2 months once that money is spent. I fear we are going to have a big rash of closings then.

Especially with people just not eating out as often.

Jeepnokc 05-25-2020, 08:48 AM The Carl Jr's at 240 and Penn has a for lease sign as does the Mackie McNears/Western Sizzler across the street. I do know that Carl Jrs was paying about 8k a month in rent and the place needed a serious renovation.

That Carl's Jr was always so empty so not terrible surprised. I wouldn't think it would stay empty long-term that is a very busy intersection. It's a shame that the I-240 maintenance is so lacking.

i was just over there yesterday at charleston's and noticed western sizzlin' but totally missed carl's jr... i'm hoping neither spot stays vacant for too long.

That Carl's has been in trouble for a while now. That location was supposed to get dozed and rebuilt just like the one on 89th and Western did about four years (?) ago; in fact, it was supposed to happen right after that location was finished (told by someone who worked there), but it never happened. That Carl's was a particularly lousy location for access, too.

P.S. Western Sizzlin' shut down apparently everything (?) in OKC a few weeks ago. They'd posted Moore and Chickasha locations closing, but it rapidly expanded. Apparently, McNear was really close to retiring anyway, but COVD pushed the issue. They had really gone downhill the last several years.

The one on S Meridian has signs in front of the building that they are open. I haven’t been by during open hours so I can’t verify if they are.
Jesseda 06-04-2020, 08:55 AM Is Cimmaron Steakhouse closed for good, they do not have a facebook page, there phone is now disconnected?

I’ve wondered too. I go by there a lot and I’ve never seen anyone checking on things or anyone there at all.
jbkrems 06-04-2020, 10:49 AM I heard yesterday that Cimarron Steakhouse plans to re-open June 22nd and have temporary hours from 4pm to 10pm.
Jesseda 06-05-2020, 01:44 PM Noticed yesterday the Western Sizzlin on penn and 240 is no more and building up for lease, the moore western sizzlin confirmed last month they are not coming back, Is golden Corral on 240 not coming back as well, they are still closed. Seems like a lot of the Buffet style businesses got hit really hard.
