Out of curiosity, is there any plan to move Gazette HQ to downtown?
Perhaps. :)

View Full Version : Oklahoma Gazette and OKCTalk.com announce merger Pete 09-07-2018, 08:31 AM Out of curiosity, is there any plan to move Gazette HQ to downtown? Perhaps. :) PaddyShack 09-07-2018, 08:34 AM Where is the current HQ? Is it still near Iron Star BBQ? Pete 09-07-2018, 08:40 AM Where is the current HQ? Is it still near Iron Star BBQ? Yes, NW corner of 36th & Shartel. I didn't buy that building and the owner wants to sell it, so we need to find a new home. It's a good thing and will tie into our whole 'new' and 'fresh restart' outlook. I've been looking and have unearthed some interesting prospects. We want to do something different, not just slot into some office building. Looked hard in the Paseo but there is nothing there for us. So, likely will be downtown somewhere but not the CBD. shawnw 09-07-2018, 09:12 AM I mean, Monarch is looking for a second anchor tenant, right? What could be more ideal than that? shawnw 09-07-2018, 09:21 AM I know that violates the "not just slot into some office building" though. My second best recommendation off the top of my head would be the neglected building south of Aloft on Walnut. Bust out some windows on the south wall for a grand view of BT. Lunches in bricktown/DD (3 new restaurants about to open!). Still on the Rt 50 route to possibly get to the streetcar (though you can also just walk the short distance to it). Downside to this choice is you're probably not wanting a lot of up front reno cost. And I think they were wanting too much for that building, no? Oh, and Aloft probably won't make a deal with you for parking, though there are other close-ish options. Next recommendation... Not sure how much space you need, but current building seems small... maybe the old Floral and Hardy spot at 13/Robinson? Not sure you'd fit though. You could always see if Travis Watkins will let you be the upstairs tenant instead of making it residential. Are all the buildings on Broadway Circle occupied? Just thinking out loud... OkiePoke 09-07-2018, 09:26 AM The space above Packard's. Pete 09-07-2018, 09:26 AM ^ Appreciate the ideas! I think we've found a space but the deal isn't final so I need backup plans. I'll share more on our new home when things get nailed down. Urbanized 09-07-2018, 10:10 AM The Gazette previously had a home in Automobile Alley (if memory serves it was the building where Broadwine Wine and Spirits is now), and later in the Maney Mansion that is now The Grandison at Maney Park bed and breakfast. It definitely belongs in the inner city, and somewhere downtown would be great. dankrutka 09-07-2018, 12:04 PM Just putting my two cents in on something I don't a lot about, but I love when media outlets (e.g., newspapers, magazines, radio) make their space interact with the street. I do like how you can walk up and see people recording podcasts or videos at the Oklahoman. It would be cool to even have days/times to encourage people to come interact with programs/events. Anyway, I'm not sure that's actually a good/profitable model or worth the effort, but I've always liked it. PaddyShack 09-07-2018, 12:51 PM I'm just sitting here wishing for print media to come back and for the 24-hr digital news cycle to die... but I was born to late for that ship. keyboard 09-07-2018, 09:36 PM Film Row is a cool area, though I guess construction currently has put a damper on it. BroadWAY Wine and spirits. keyboard 09-08-2018, 07:11 PM The Gazette previously had a home in Automobile Alley (if memory serves it was the building where Broadwine Wine and Spirits is now), and later in the Maney Mansion that is now The Grandison at Maney Park bed and breakfast. The Divine Providence room is the site of the Gazette's old conference room: https://www.grandisoninn.com/rooms_divine.htm Urbanized 09-08-2018, 07:57 PM ^^^^^^ Hey! I’ve stayed in that room! keyboard 09-08-2018, 08:48 PM ^^^^^^ Hey! I’ve stayed in that room! Looks like a nice place. I'd pick Florence's Room if I stayed there, though. RadicalModerate 10-04-2018, 10:34 AM Next best thing to an actual burger at Hopdoddy's and a visit to the OKCMOA (with no mention at all of Baba G's Gyro Shoppe) news that Our Gracious Host just took over The Oklahoma Gazette! Hopefully, it--the Gazette--will get thicker with Real Journalism (and the ads that support it). Simple Suggestion: Please retain the NY Times Crossword. Thank You. Midtowner 10-05-2018, 06:35 PM Out of curiosity, is there any plan to move Gazette HQ to downtown? I'm sure the city could front at least $1.5 million for a locally owned newspaper to relocate downtown. Pete 10-17-2018, 06:19 AM Started some cross-promotion between OKCTalk and the Gazette. http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/oktalkgazettead1.jpg shawnw 10-17-2018, 01:19 PM "where local news gets their news" love it Pete 10-17-2018, 01:24 PM "where local news gets their news" love it Our tag line used to be "What you'll read in the paper next week" but I changed it after buying the Gazette since is a paper as well. :) Questor 10-21-2018, 08:10 PM I’m really happy about the aquisition. It makes sense. Something that I am hoping to see is an improved web presence for The Gazette... in the past Issuu has been the only real way to read the magazine online... still surprised that it seems to be a paper first type of publication. Can’t wait to see what synergies the two sides of the business might some day provide. Pete 10-22-2018, 06:52 AM ^ The huge percentage of revenue is from print ads; same with the Oklahoman. Everything the Gazette does is online as well and OKCTalk will continue to be the breaking news digital outlet. We'll be growing the digital presence of the Gazette but that takes time. Meanwhile, OKCTalk gets close to 2 million impressions per month, which is monster online traffic. Pete 10-22-2018, 10:24 AM Here is a little taste of the absolute badass work being done at the Gazette, a teaser for our upcoming Halloween cover and photo shoot which will debut on Wednesday. This was all done by our new photographer (who is nothing short of amazing), one of our resident graphic designer/artist, local models and stylists. All done at the Paramount Building in Film Row; Dead Center loaned some of the spooky props. 84jEyK7-CRI TheTravellers 12-20-2018, 08:53 AM Love what you're doing with the editorials in the Gazette, Pete, especially the full red pages calling out the Joklahoman, about time someone started doing that! Pete 12-20-2018, 02:49 PM I regret that I took this thread down a political path, so I deleted my comments and all those that came after. TheTravellers 12-20-2018, 09:13 PM Apologies if I instigated it with mine. Must've been some interesting posts, though, sorry I missed them. Also meant to say I liked the new MJ column (I think it's going to be a regular one), wife reminded me I left that out... Pete 12-21-2018, 07:50 AM We've added a new cannabis section to the Gazette that will feature articles and other info every week; called The High Culture (THC). Mel 12-21-2018, 12:50 PM We've added a new cannabis section to the Gazette that will feature articles and other info every week; called The High Culture (THC). I've noticed that the last couple of printings. It's a good way to get the Education out there, and not just the hype. Pete 12-21-2018, 01:09 PM I've noticed that the last couple of printings. It's a good way to get the Education out there, and not just the hype. Thanks. Starting with next week's paper (hits newsstands on Wed) that section will double and will continue to grow. Pete 03-28-2019, 10:18 AM Gazette won gold at this year's Oklahoma Addy Awards, for both the single ad at the top and for the entire ad series. That qualified us for the same sort of competition at District (OK, TX, AR, LA) and just found out yesterday we once again took gold in both categories. The best Gazette had previously done in its 40+ years was a single bronze at District. District is particularly tough because you go against big competition from Dallas, Houston, Austin, etc. Now, we move on to Nationals in June in both categories. We are in the process of re-starting the series so you'll soon see more of these in future issues. Oh, I thought there was a joke/reference I was missing. catch22 03-28-2019, 12:31 PM Love the copy! The dry humor of “All Press. No release” reminds me of Continental’s ad work. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8bJQb4-NOrw/SdAU9STwYwI/AAAAAAAAAhg/WzN5HLOq1TA/s400/continental+airlines.bmp Pete 03-28-2019, 01:23 PM ^ Those are awesome. David 03-28-2019, 01:29 PM Congratulations on the awards, here's hoping Nationals goes well. Midtowner 03-28-2019, 01:37 PM I don't know if The Gazette still does this, but they did used to publish the most ridiculous unsolicited press releases they received from time to time. Pete 03-28-2019, 01:44 PM I don't know if The Gazette still does this, but they did used to publish the most ridiculous unsolicited press releases they received from time to time. We don't but that's a great idea. Or at the very least, the crazy offers of stories for us to publish (either from someone who wants us to cover them or writers trying to sell an article). As publisher, my email is out there now and I get scads and scads of these, and some get angry when I don't respond... Which would take most my waking hours if I did that for every unsolicited message. Thomas Vu 03-28-2019, 02:02 PM Way to go, Pete! LordGerald 03-28-2019, 02:16 PM We don't but that's a great idea. We used to get calls every day from someone opening up a restaurant, or a barber shop, wanting to know when a reporter was going to call them to do "a story." EVERY SINGLE DAY. We used to get calls every day from someone opening up a restaurant, or a barber shop, wanting to know when a reporter was going to call them to do "a story." EVERY SINGLE DAY. We also get people showing up at our offices to hand us articles they've written. And of course we get some spectacular letters about the most random stuff you can imagine. LordGerald 03-28-2019, 02:57 PM We also get people showing up at our offices to hand us articles they've written. And of course we get some spectacular letters about the most random stuff you can imagine. Good times. I remember a guy wrote a story about riding the bus all day. Completely crapped on non-choice riders, and it was borderline racist. He said it was a perspective that an ordinary Gazette reader wouldn't have. I threw in in the trash in front of him and he threatened to sue me. Another guy submitted a review of The Beatles "White Album," - 23 years after its release. He was enraged that we never published it. And, it was about 5,000 words long! Pete 03-28-2019, 03:01 PM Hahahaha.... EVERYONE thinks they are a writer and have some unique perspective that must be shared with the wide world. mugofbeer 03-28-2019, 11:43 PM That's what chat forums are for. :) Pete 05-20-2019, 12:29 PM Very, very proud. TheTravellers 08-15-2019, 08:36 PM Hey Pete, noticed George Lang isn't on the masthead as of the current issue of the Gazette, what happened (if you can say)? Edmond Hausfrau 10-02-2019, 08:39 AM Hey Pete, noticed George Lang isn't on the masthead as of the current issue of the Gazette, what happened (if you can say)? Yeah, he's been there for a while, I believe, during the time he was at the Gazette. He just kind of disappeared for a couple of months from Twitter and permanently from the Gazette, oh well, hope he landed on his feet somewhere. George Lang now on the masthead at 405 magazine, along with Greg Horton and Lillie Beth Sanger. I think local people must have bought out the previous publisher, because I thought it used to be out of Kansas City? Anyway, looks like they picked up quite a few local journalists/freelancers. RadicalModerate 01-27-2020, 01:54 PM I'm so old that I remember when The Oklahoma Gazette was the "go-to place" to get insightful, non-biased, journalism on many topics, interesting Letters to the Editor, and humorous advertising. Today I only pick it up for the NY Times Crossword Puzzle and Sudoku du Jour. When one gets into a pissing contest with Steve L. of Daily Oklahoman Fame . . . well . . . I recon there ain't no winners. Print Media Wise. |
