Roughtail Brewing announces new location
08.01.18
Roughtail Brewing Company is pleased to announce their forever home at approximately 220 W. Memorial Road in north Oklahoma City. The building will total 20,000 sq. ft. and occupy the northern half of the 5.5-acre property. The newly constructed facility will house 12,750 sq. ft. of production space, featuring 30 ft. clear ceilings and a brand new 30 BBL Canadian-built DME brewhouse. The upgraded space and equipment will allow Roughtail Brewing Company to initially double their brewing capacity and enables future growth up to 50,000 barrels per year.
The remaining 8,000 sq. ft. will feature a combination of taphouse and office space. The main room of the taphouse will feature an open-air concept and provide views of the production floor. In addition, the taphouse will feature a private event space and an auxiliary bar for special events and brewery only releases. An outdoor patio area will also come to fruition shortly after opening.
Roughtail is working with Key Construction and Small Architects to bring this vision to reality. Funding is provided by in part by Intrust Bank. Roughtail plans to break ground this fall, with an opening date in 2019.
“We feel that there is a serious need for a craft brewery located in north OKC,” said Blaine Stansel, CEO and co-founder of Roughtail Brewing Company, “The area is booming with new things going in at Chisolm Creek almost every week, and existing entertainment attractions such as Main Event, Topgolf, and iFLY. In addition, the low cost of land allowed us to buy enough so we’ll never have to worry about outgrowing this spot.”
“Our last major manufacturing expansion was back in July 2017, and ever since we’ve been producing at max capacity. This move will allow us to continue to move into markets outside of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas, and assure our current customers of continual product availability,” said Tony Tielli, COO, and co-founder of Roughtail Brewing Company.
The total project costs are around $5.1 million, including land, the building, and new equipment. While Roughtail will be bringing over a lot of their current production equipment, they hope to sell their current brewhouse and accouterments to a new startup brewery, who can come in and take-over a turnkey operation.

PaddyShack 08-01-2018, 03:28 PM Maybe it will be a new beer delivery option...
shawnw 08-01-2018, 03:29 PM it's a shame not downtown or downtown adjacent. not super close to other gathering venues. you have to go (drive) to just there, unlike the taproom hopping you'll be able to do downtown in short order. Not terribly far from Chisolm, but it's not like you can "crawl" over to there.
Unless there are things coming they know about that we don't where memorial is the next 10th street...

Oh, this is why they have the helipad! Patrons will be ferried around OKC via helicopter!
shawnw 08-01-2018, 03:32 PM And we'd all line up just to ride the chopper....

shawnw 08-01-2018, 04:15 PM OMG they're doing my idea from when commercial tilt-rotors were espoused to be a thing in the near (but not so much now) future. Gah.

Sure, but it beats middle of nowhere Midwest City. And I suppose not every brewery has to be downtown, but it'd definitely be awesome if they were.
ultimatesooner 08-01-2018, 05:40 PM I'll likely go to this place and would never come close if its downtown, but i'm just a hillbilly fixin 2 build on 5 acres in bridge creek that works all around the city, everyone doesn't need to be in the chitshow that is downtown to be happy
Johnb911 08-02-2018, 10:12 AM Without knowing anything about their financials...maybe downtown was just too expensive to get a piece of land/building big enough for their 'forever' operation, and they figured if people would drive out to nowhere Midwest City, they'll drive a mile west of Chisholm Creek. Or just take a break from buying plants at TLC across the street.
Anyone have a feel for how big their operation is relative to the other *full* breweries going in downtown/core? Prairie doesn't count. My guess (and it's totally a guess) is that they are bigger than Twisted Spike, Vanessa House, Angry Scotsman, Elk Valley etc.

yes
OkiePoke 08-02-2018, 10:30 AM It will be nice to go to a brewery that is semi-close instead of having to go to Midtown. That is a huge appeal to this location.

I agree that not every every brewery has to be downtown. COOP is a great example. They're going to kill it and not be downtown. But I do think there should _some_thing somewhat close. Would have recommended staying in the core in the very least. I'm sure they'll do well, not implying otherwise.
Also, if there are helicopter rides, I'll be there, and I don't even drink.
PaddyShack 08-02-2018, 10:35 AM I am glad they are building this, looks like everything can be under one roof. Why couldn't they then open a smaller taproom/brewery downtown that is more geared towards the taproom crowd versus their entire brewing and distribution operation?

this...
warreng88 08-02-2018, 09:15 PM I have some insight to it:
They are building on Memorial because the it meets the needs of the their future growth. They don't want to do what other breweries have done, build for two years down the road and then build again for two years later. If I remember correctly, the new space would be able to handle 3-4 times of the production they are able to handle now.
They didn't want to move downtown because for what they needed, it was going to cost a lot more to get it or they would have to take less space and then have to start looking to move another 2-3 years later.
BridgeBurner 08-02-2018, 09:39 PM Dang, their current location is the perfect pre-game spot before family gatherings at my grandma's in MWC ha!
doufan 08-03-2018, 11:25 AM I live in Midwest City and I frequented the Brewery often as it was on the way home from work. I'm sad to see them go but I understand why they need to. For those in the know about OKC's brewery scene what's the chances there is someone ready to move into this location to start their 1st brewery?

as far as i am aware. all of the "breweries in planning" in the OKC area already have initial spots... but i wouldn't be surprised to see one jump at the opportunity to jump to that location as an upgrade once the space becomes empty.
Roughtail reasoning lets you know what a majority of the smaller ones are looking at doing... have a space and grow till you hit it's capacity in 2-3 years. then move to a location to hold your new growth for the next 2-3 years... both roughtail and coop want to look at their place for the long haul. Also if downtown becomes too saturated with breweries, i could see one deciding to move out where there is a bit less competition... so perhaps when Roughtail moves out, maybe twisted spike or another looks at this location as a chance to grow. So hopefully for those people in MWC, something will happen for you all.
i know i'm super stoked about Black Mesa joining my regular rotation of (405) and Lazy Circles... and know i would be devastated if Norman lost their breweries.
Uptowner 08-05-2018, 11:15 AM Edmond dirt is cheap. And it takes a lot to build a brewery. Also, can we use the helipad to drone growlers to my house?

Overly optimistic on the number of bikes considering the location...
But the building itself looks really cool.
Probably less hot air balloons as well. :)
Looks sharp.
no1cub17 04-18-2019, 05:53 PM Like their beer, but will likely never go to their taproom. Why drive so far north when there are like 10 taprooms within 5 minutes of me. Plus oak and ore a 2 minute walk away.

It all comes down to money. At this point we're putting everything we've got into the new location on Memorial. After we get settled in there we are looking at opening up a satellite brewpub in Tulsa, or maybe downtown OKC. Not sure yet. We'll see how everything goes.
We've also got a tons of ideas for the additional 2.5 acres. So there will be new Roughtail ventures down the road.

exactly this.... it's good to have all we have in one area... but it's also nice to spread a few around for some additional variety.

Have ya been to BLACK MESA yet? We hit it it up on the Grand Opening and it was flooded with eager customers. Also looking forward to BIG opening this weekend at the NMF.

yes... i have been adding Black Mesa as a rotation, so that i'm not always at (405)

I look forward to you guys opening, as this location is closer to my office than Midtown/AA/DT
jn1780 09-04-2019, 09:57 PM Construction on this has been slow going. It looks like they have the concrete walls poured and were about to start raising them, but today I noticed one of the concrete walls was broken in two. So it seems like something went wrong with that wall during a lift. Its towards the west end of the property if someone's drives by and looks.

Someone told me they had Key Construction's project manager removed from the project because progress was so slow this spring and summer. They had hoped to be in the new building late fall/early winter. Not sure that is going to happen!

I'm not sure why it has been so slow. I know due to the lack of space, they have to pour walls on top of existing walls so there are three layers of walls stacked on top of each other and like I mentioned above, there is at least one wall that has been destroyed. I wonder if they had that one up and the storm hit and knocked it down.

To be fair - Most of Key constructions staff and VP left in April.

Thanks!
Wil be very interesting to see how the taproom does in that location, being so far from the core and all the other breweries.

It is my understanding that this was their goal, they liked being the only option in the area. From a conversation I had with one of their brewers, they would have loved to stay in their location in MWC if they had the space they needed, so moving to this location gave them the space they needed and kept them as the sole brewery in their area.
mgharfeh 09-17-2019, 10:29 AM I think it will do fantastic and spark even more development in that direction. I live near 178 and Western and absolutely love that location and it’s proximity to Chisholm Creek and downtown Edmond. I think with all those areas have in the plans, my location is totally under-rated for its future potential. Aside from the occasional trip to downtown, I don’t find myself going south for anything besides Wholefoods and Trader Joe’s. It will be a game changer if one of these groceries opens somewhere further north.
jn1780 09-17-2019, 10:41 AM Three panels still left to go on west side. There is still that broken wall laying on top of two other two walls. I imagine if it crashed on top of the other walls, all three would need to be re-poured.

More expansion going on today! We're adding another silo to house wheat. And the brewers rejoiced from not having to open bags and bags of wheat anymore.

My wife and I go at least once a week, they have a great staff in the taproom. We were given a "tour" a month or so ago and its really a fantastic operation they have going on. They are bringing in larger fermentation tanks to help bolster production as well as the grain silos. If you haven't made it in, I'd highly recommend it, on weekends they have the patio open with a window to serve as well as bands frequent the patio.
Rover 08-28-2020, 08:48 AM BTW, seems like they and their patrons have been very good with masking, distancing and being very responsible.
