View Full Version : Alley Cafe
And just to be clear, even though the Gazette accepts restaurant advertising, our editorial staff (like Mr. Threadgill) and our sales department are completely separate.
In fact, the salespeople are purposely excluded from knowing about paper content until they read it like everyone else.
Also true with 'Best of' winners.
And unlike the Oklahoman, we do not publish paid content.
These seem like small things but are huge in terms of journalistic integrity and principals not shared by the Oklahoman and most local news sources.

Looks like it is associated with this catering company:

dankrutka 05-01-2019, 04:53 PM So is it now Rew Orleans brought to you by Alley Cafe?

DammitDan 06-25-2019, 12:53 PM It looks like they've reopened with the Cajun concept. Has anyone been?
I've been by there a couple of times.
The first time was 1PM and they were closed. Second time it was about 7PM and there wasn't one person in there other than the owner standing behind the bar. It was so weird and uncomfortable I didn't even go in.
No menu is posted. Interior is unchanged apart from a few mardi gras masks on the tables.
I called the Rew Orleans catering outfit that I assume is now somehow involved, but maybe not. They never returned my call.

Mballard85 06-28-2019, 12:06 PM There is nothing about this place that looks welcoming. It looks dark and cheap, the amount of money the owners are throwing away with the lack of business has to be huge.
baralheia 06-28-2019, 04:59 PM I found an Instagram account - https://www.instagram.com/alley_cafeokc_rew_orleans... No idea if it's the official account or not. I assume it is since there are photos of the old Alley Cafe in there too. Going with that assumption: it looks like there's some additional confirmation that the original Alley Cafe owners brought in the chef from Rew Orleans Catering (Reuben Carey) to run the kitchen. The photos of the food look pretty good, as does the menu - it's all cajun and creole cooking now. Hours appear to be Monday through Saturday, 5pm-10pm. Lunch service will be starting July 5th; lunch hours will be Monday through Saturday, 11am-2pm. No clue if it's any good or not, but I think I'm going to have to check it out - if for no other reason than to try their crawfish and shrimp etouffee.

Thanks!
Yes, it is the same chef behind the catering business. Have no idea why he won't call me back.
It looks like he is legit and the food items seems interesting.
Mantison 06-29-2019, 09:40 AM I have a pet theory that is some bizarre money laundering front. Like, they connect to the old "underground tunnels" and are doing... I dunno, stuff?
Clearly a joke, but this is a weird story to watch develop.
Went by last night -- a Saturday -- around 7PM and it was open but completely empty.
Tons of people all around, too. At Bunker, Scottie's, and the Tower.

Best theory I've heard yet. That or some kind of twisted tax write off scheme.

This place is owned by the Truong-Thana super massage chair grocery Chinese medicine market. I’ve long theorized that it’s a front of some kind. They don’t need the money. Unwilling to sell. Obviously not in the business of being in business. Odd.
TheTravellers 07-26-2019, 10:50 AM Was going to ask if anybody had eaten here yet, we were thinking about going before we see Flying Lotus at the Tower in Aug, but then I saw a couple of pictures on Yelp of a "muffaletta", and wow, just wow...

This is now known as Alley Cafe Southern Cuisine with a different menu.
Social media says, "All-day lunch and breakfast" 10AM to 10PM.

The continuing saga of this place is just so bizarre. I assume Ruben Carey is out? Their post on Instagram mentions a "new team and new concept" so that makes it sound like they've parted ways... after all of 3 and a half months. What the hell is going on here?
TheTravellers 10-03-2019, 04:53 PM Been by there a few times since they changed to Rew Orleans on the way to/from various places - lunchtime-ish, afternoon, 6 PM-ish on various days, and they've always had the "Closed" sign up. Total joke of a place, wish they'd just quit and let somebody else that knows what they're doing go in there.

Odd for a place that serves breakfast to not open until 10 AM
TheirTheir 10-04-2019, 09:02 AM Next they will only offer Lunch and Dinner 2pm-6pm.
Changed their hours to 9A to 10P every day.
Here is their menu from Uber Eats:

Bar list is very reasonable. $3 for Coop F5 is about as cheap as I've seen in this town.
The food looks interesting too. Hope the new operators can gain a foothold.

ctchandler 10-09-2019, 09:22 PM Pete,
I pay $6.00 at Upper Crust and $5.00 at Henry Hudson's at Danforth so yes, that's a great price for F-5.

TeeDub2 10-11-2019, 10:26 AM $9 bottomless mimosas?? :cheersmf:

Does COOP have a suggested price for their retailers? I would assume it’s in their best interest to not have price wars on their products.

Catch22,
I don't know but it's only $5.00 at Henry Hudson's.

benjico 10-14-2019, 08:51 AM This is my favorite thread on OKC Talk. Can't wait to see what style of food they serve next month!
BigRed 11-08-2019, 10:49 AM This place is beyond crazy and I have an interesting story about the place. I had parked around the corner and was going to Hunny Bunny to eat and walked past this place. I had stopped before and would ask them questions about the place and how the sale of the market next door was going? I said I hope someone buys it soon and does something great with it, because this area is becoming so cool and needs it because this place is a bit ran down and an eyesore.
Well a few minutes later, I am inside HB standing in line and this little Asian man comes inside yelling out me and threatening me and accusing me of harassing his wife! I said "sir, that is not true and that he needed to get away from me" I told him he needed to leave and even stepped outside so people inside wouldn't see this craziness. He proceeded to keep on and I finally warned him that he better just leave and leave now. He wouldn't and kept on yelling and accusing and telling that "I better not ever come back in his place" and I said it was nasty and disgusting and not to worry about that. The manager from HB came outside and I went inside and ordered something. It was all so bizzarre and crazy, and I am convinced that this place is truly terrible and to be avoided at all costs. I feel really bad for the chef that went in business with these terrible people and it didn't work out for him and that sucks. He and his family were so nice and I was happy for them, but once I realized the previous owners were still attached to this place, I knew if was doomed. These are not good people to do something like this, and I hope that whole place gets sold and something good comes to that location in the near future because it is gross to me and others that drive by it daily.
TheirTheir 11-11-2019, 09:08 AM So you stopped and spoke with his wife just before entering Hunny Bunny or you had spoken with his wife previously and when you walked passed the windows the husband recognized you and followed you in?
Edmond Hausfrau 01-19-2020, 01:03 PM Despite a paper sign professing to be open 11am to 10pm, the Alley Crewe Orleans (I really can't figure out the name) was closed at 6pm on a Saturday.
How are they making their rent payment?!?

Becuase they own the building.
Edmond Hausfrau 06-20-2021, 08:49 PM Is this place named something new yet again? Had a sign in window and I was driving so couldn't decipher.
rayvaflav 01-05-2024, 03:30 PM On this dreary, grey and rainy Friday I was looking for an interesting story that I remembered from a few years ago to pique my interest. And here it is. What's happening on that crazy-ass lime green and bright yellow corner these days ?
I'm bumping this thread because the chef of the 'Rew Orleans' iteration of this bonkers place will be running Ruth's Creole Kitchen in the old Copley/Play Cafe building.
Let's hope the last venture was a result of the crazy building owners, because it looks like his NOLA 54 Bistro in one of the Quail Springs office buildings has been pretty decent.
