Only had a few items but food was average, nothing bad nothing great. But I did like that they have a bunch of appetizers which is good for a place like this. Beer list was tad underwhelming. As mentioned, its definitely the best spot for watching sports, a ton of tvs and all in the right spots. Never should you have to crane your neck.

But the main thing, they better fix whatever that god awful smell the restaurant had when I was in there. Must be some kind of sewer issue and it didnt help me feel good about the food or atmosphere.

I smelled the same thing a month or so back when I went to Firebirds! I was told it was something to do with the sewer system in the area (not their restaurant). This was before Chalk opened. Definitely off-putting.

it's okay. pretty basic, imo. and much like Uncle Julio's, the service is absolutely terrible.

would rather drink $1 craft beers on my porch.

I'll watch sports here when the betting arrives.

Ordered chicken fried chicken with collared greens and the pimento wontons with honey

https://photos.app.goo.gl/EZ3y1DpZdPAc8GZv8

Chicken wasn't seasoned, and everything else was somewhat salty. It worked if I ate it altogether.

I normally don't like pimento cheese, but whatever I don't like about it was negated by the honey.

betting is not coming to Oklahoma anytime soon

same people said that about the pot several years ago and here we are.

Once they figure out how much in revenue they are losing via taxes Oklahoma will come around.
Hopefully sports betting will come before texas, and Winstar will triple in size

Spent most of Thursday and Friday at Chalk, drinking and watching the opening round of the NCAA tourney. Its great spot for March Madness. Food was good, as I tried a little bit of everything over the weekend. Nothing earth shattering, but I went for the TV/Game watching atmosphere, not to be a food critic. This will probably be my new spot for March madness opening rounds, and I could see myself taking in a few Thunder playoff road games/OU Football road games. Great atmosphere, good food, and TONS of TVs, with great views anywhere in the place. Not sure what else you would really need for a sports bar.

Man tought crowd. I've been a few times and have always left satisfied. They really threw themselves in the fire opening up super bowl weekend and a month or so later march madness. I think they've handled it pretty well and will learn and move forward to make it even better.

Don’t disagree but think this could change with all the traction that is present nearby - Arkansas (about to launch), Missouri and Kansas (bills introduced). NM is already up and running. Mobile betting would really the coup de gra (and could still be thru existing casinos).

Mobile is already available. Just use an offshore book. With it being legal on a federal level off shore books are no longer illegal.

Best thing about offshore books is they offer great props - many of which US books won’t touch, but if you get me an Oklahoma mobile app I’ll never go back to BetOnline or 5Dimes. (Bovado lines are very square so don’t touch those). Anyway.....back to Chalk.

I spent quite a bit of time there the last couple of weeks, both as a couple and with a group of friends. I don't know what the prior person's issue was, but the service has been outstanding. The only thing I've had so far that i really didn't care for was the reuben "chalker" (slider). I'm a big reuben fan, and it was just blah. The meat was dry, the "sauerkraut" tasted like it was just plain, un-fermented cabbage soaked in vinegar, and the sauce was very very minimal - almost non-existent. I ate it, but I won't order it again. I really, really like their wings with their scratch-made blue cheese dressing. That said, though I like the wings being the un-breaded type, they could be larger. Some are downright tiny. Favorites slider so far has been the "crabby patty chalker", basically a crab cake slider.

Went last Fri night with family and it was full house. Made reservations and they text you back to confirm. Got seats on middle floor and was great view. Service was outstanding! My son asked for and got some sample beers so he could decide and they had no problem with that. Food was outstanding and more portions than I could eat. Got Fish and Chips which are waffle fries. Both outstanding. Even got some Churrios for dessert and it took all of us to eat them. The only problem wasn’t really a problem. They were to bring me another beer but brought my son one instead but since he didn’t order one they gave it to him free. My beer was there in literal seconds by another gal. Waiter was knowledgable too and helped us pick an appetizer which was enough for all of us. Way better service than expected and for the crowd size too.

I had no problems the whole evening and service was better than expected given how crowded it was. My family was from Dallas and loved this place said Dallas has nothing similar.

Would recommend and will go again.

They've been messing around with the menu. It's extremely slow if there isn't a marquee game or UFC fight being shown.

Yeah, I noticed that last time as well. They are serving full sized sandwiches now (at a slightly higher price). I still love their wings but I've discovered the Pimento Crab Wontons with spicy honey and they are awesome. I could eat two plates of those by themselves and be happy. Can't beat the place for watching football. I plan to be there this Saturday night to watch the game.

Chalk seems like a concept that would have thrived during DVN and CHK’s heyday. Back when capital was loose and the vendors had big expense accounts.

Also, I’d imagine it suffers quite a bit from its mediocre food. So much competition within a few miles of there and a having large number of tvs isn’t necessarily a panacea.

I really like the Chalk and it's the best place to watch sports in the metro by far. They've been packed every time I went. I'm hoping they reopen but it's definitely concerning. Why would they not wait until basketball season is over to do "scheduled maintenance"?

In my experience a lot of the more rabid basketball fans are out of state transplants. The majority of the people like the team and can talk about their favorite players on the team. If you actually want to get technical and talk about different half court offensive sets or why a particular defense works against player x vs y, you will generally speak to someone that wasn't born here. Football on the other hand it seems like the average Oklahoman is ready to do a TED talk on. Basketball is likely the third or fourth most popular professional sport in Oklahoma if I had to guess its NFL, MLB, NBA/MLS.

I think if you're going to revamp a Sports Bar, this might be one of the few times during the year to do it. Right after the Superbowl it dies off until Conference tournaments/March Madness. I'm really hoping that the food will get an overhaul- since its opened I've thought the food was VERY average.

Pete
03-01-2023, 03:04 PM
The problem with this type of closure is that you lose all your staff.

And then you have to start all over with the hiring process and it's very difficult to find good help in restaurants and bars right now. Plus, you have to train all the new people and basically start over like a new business.

The owners know all this which is why this closure is worrisome.

I know for a fact that several of their staff chose to go work elsewhere.

Glad to hear they are reopening and hopefully they retained most.

And they closed right after the Super Bowl. If they reopen on March 9th that will have been 4 weeks.

I've been shocked how long this place has managed to stay open. I've never seen it busy enough to support what I assume is massive overhead. Granted, I've only been 3 times. But I am in the other concepts there pretty regularly. I'm about as laid back as it gets when it comes to food and service. But on all of my visits to Chalk I've been mostly disappointed. I would describe it as perfectly average. If guests are expecting mediocrity, I would think they'd leave satisfied. I'm not sure who owns this concept. But they've dumped a boatload of cash into it over the years. Maybe they are very well off, love sports, love beer, and needed a tax writeoff.
