View Full Version : Shipley Do-Nuts
Chain is getting ready to enter the OKC market at 1017 South Air Depot in Midwest City.
I'm sure many more locations will follow, as there are now 15 in the DFW area.
Shipley is based in Houston and has 190 locations in Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Wow... Haven't been down Depot in awhile. Did not know they had torn that building down.

Yes, new construction and Shipley will be on the end.
2,200 SF so pretty big for a donut place.

Please share the reason for your enthusiasm.
I am completely unfamiliar with them.
stile99 12-12-2017, 12:57 PM Unlike the Krispy Kreme fad, these donuts are excellent (not saying Krispy Kreme is 'bad', just there's a reason they fail when there's competition available). Every one I've been to the service is even better than the donuts, and when not super busy, they'll even make custom donuts for you. One time I went in really wanting a cherry glazed, but they were out. When I mentioned that that's what I was looking for, they made me one. Another time I went in just before closing and got a super deal on kolaches. They're so good they even have a location in Round Rock, and Round Rock donuts are no slouch. I can't say if this is true at all locations, but the ones in Central Texas that I've been to actually have real Bavarian Cream in the Bavarian Cream donuts, not just frosting (I really hope they continue that trend here). One time I couldn't decide between a cherry glazed and a Bavarian Cream filled, so they took a filled one and dipped it in the cherry glaze for me. That was one decadent donut.
I'm sure it's going to be different from location to location, but the overall feeling I got was (hopefully this doesn't sound too corny) is they're not in the business of selling donuts, there's in the business of making people happy, it is just so happens that donuts tend to do that. Whereas some donut places, I've gotten the overall feeling of "here's your donuts and there's the door".
TheTravellers 12-12-2017, 01:17 PM I hope they come to the north side, OKC donut shops suck as a whole, same stuff every place you go, gotta be one central donut dough/frosting location with tubes pumping it to 98% of the donut shops here, with very few exceptions.
Wish we could get one of these here:

I'm sure they'll be opening more locations around town, just not exactly sure where.
progressiveboy 12-12-2017, 06:20 PM Really good donuts! Very fresh and good selection. They are popular in DFW.
bradh 12-13-2017, 02:57 PM Pete they are a Houston institution. Really good donuts and kolaches. If they ever bring the brisket kolaches up look out!
Roger S 12-13-2017, 03:08 PM Pete they are a Houston institution. Really good donuts and kolaches. If they ever bring the brisket kolaches up look out!
Ok you got my attention there.... Are these the good kolaches like you can find in Central Texas?
stile99 12-13-2017, 03:14 PM They are indeed. With the correct dough and everything.

Well then welcome to Oklahoma Shipley's Do-Nuts!!!!! Where have you been all my life??? ;)
usmbubba 12-13-2017, 04:24 PM If they are still like they were when I was a kid in MS (50+ years) they are the best
ctchandler 12-13-2017, 10:16 PM Brisket kolaches? You got my attention. Kind of sad though, I recently left the Mid/Del area and I'm back in Edmond. I guess I will just hope they open in the Edmond area.

bradh 12-14-2017, 07:50 AM Don't get too excited, they're not a regular menu item just sometimes released as specials.
soonermike81 12-14-2017, 08:48 AM I've never had their kolaches, and brisket kolaches sound amazing. But their donuts aren't anything special imo. My wife used to live in Houston and she swore by Shipley's, said they were the best and she can tell. Well I was in Dallas at the time and the Korean owned mom-and-pop shops are everywhere and they are great donuts. I decided to give her a blind taste test on two occasions when she came to Dallas. Both times, she picked the mom-and-pop donut as the better tasting donut. I'm not saying Shipley's is a bad donut, but they're nothing special. I'd take these mom-and-pop shops any day
Just Retired 12-15-2017, 07:32 AM This is in the new strip where the Burger King / Bionic Burger / Big Ed's, / Sprigg's BBQ were located.

http://www.thedonutstop.com/There's a little donut shop in a tiny strip-mini-mall on Hefner between Rockwell and Council (the same one that houses Papa Murphy's, near the post office) that's not the same as all the others I've tried. It's only open until noon, so I go only when I wake up early enough, but the young ladies there always add some small goody to my order of a dozen glazed, and they have a drive-thru window. Most of the others seem to be subsidiaries of a single prefab pastry flour company...

Thanks for the tip, we're not around there often now that I don't work at Hertz and we live in the Venice neighborhood, but I'll make a note to try it next time we're over there early enough.

You ever been to AM Donuts, off of Penn? Went here recently for the first time and the old couple that runs the place are the nicest people ever. Donuts, sausage rolls, and croissant sandwiches are all very good, but nothing mind blowing. But their service keeps me coming back. Many of these other mom-and-pop shops can be extremely rude, and I will gladly continue to give my money to small business owners who treat their customers well.
^AM Donuts is where I go often. Very close to my house and they always give extra goodies.

Yes! That store is great! We used to live in the apartments behind that store and man were they tempting!
Twist donuts on the south side at 89th and S Penn are also very tasty!

Right by our liquor store (Modern Liquor, featured in the film Rudderless :)), but have not been 'cos we usually don't get up and out early enough on weekends (which is the only time we do donuts, otherwise we'd weigh way too much) to get to most donut shops because they all close at noon. AM closes at 1 PM (funny), but that's still too early. May try them on the way to work one day just for the hell of it, it's not too far out of my way.
Thomas Vu 12-16-2017, 09:12 AM I'll throw in my usual shout out of bethany donuts on rockwell and 39th.
soonerguru 12-16-2017, 11:38 PM I'll throw in my usual shout out of bethany donuts on rockwell and 39th.
Gotta give this a try.
soonerguru 12-16-2017, 11:41 PM Still a big fan of Polar Donuts on 10th and Meridian.
Thomas Vu 12-17-2017, 09:41 AM Gotta give this a try.
Keep me posted. They're lighter and crispier than most.

Well, looks like I'm gonna have to make my way over to this place. That's the perfect donut. Has a nice bite to it, but light and airy as well.

Does Polar fit this description as well?

I didn't think so when I had them recently. Felt their donut was actually a little heavier than what I prefer. Heard in the past that they use potato flakes in there dough, so not sure if that is what makes them dense
DCARS 12-20-2017, 04:36 AM I've been to Shipley's in Houston and San Antonio, and absolutely loved them. There is a bit of similarity to Krispy Kreme in how they make them behind a glass while you watch. They are very good and I am very excited about having them here.
ourulz2000 12-20-2017, 10:45 AM This is huge news. Shipley's is a Texas institution!
Robert_M 12-20-2017, 01:27 PM 2,200 SF so pretty big for a donut place.
Looks like it is about 875 sf for Dining, 200 sf for restrooms, 225 sf for storage and the remaining is kitchen space.
OKC_on_mines 12-20-2017, 09:37 PM First introduced to Shipleys in H-town and fell in love with their kolaches. Truly one of a kind. This is huge, not sure we have anything here on this level that I have come across. Honestly surprised it took this long. This place will do damage in midtown, downtown, bricktown, deep deuce and all across the urban core. Can't wait to get my hands on a ham and cheese and jalapeņo sausage and cheese kolache. Their donuts are good too.

Heard in the past that they use potato flakes in there dough, so not sure if that is what makes them denseThis reminded me of the SpudNut place that was located downtown back in the mid-50s when I worked at 4th and Broadway. Their flour was totally potato-based rather than wheat, and it made a wonderful donut. Hadn't thought of them for more than half a century! They didn't survive the mass exodus of business from the CBD that eventually led to Urban Renewal, though.
pewtertm 12-21-2017, 03:41 PM Saw this and did a happy dance! I grew up with Shipley's...haven't found anything up here that comes close. Route 66 Donuts is pretty good (I like their whole wheat donut), and Twist on the south side is ok, but they aren't Shipley's! Glad it's not being built right by my house or I'd probably be in there too often.
And Jim Kyle, there is a Spudnuts Donut Shop in Stillwater. At least there was one a few years ago when I took my mom up there; not sure if it's still there or not.
Their 2nd location will be at NW 164th & Penn.
Jersey Boss 03-05-2018, 08:05 PM Allegedly the owner was attempting to fill something other than doughnuts

Mastermind 11-01-2018, 02:22 PM Was driving on NW Expressway today and saw a coming soon sign in front of the old Sonic.
I for one am surprised and happy, because I've been meaning to check out the Midwest City location, but it was a bit too far honestly

What part of NW Expressway is that?
It's in Warr Acres, on the south side of NWEX and east of MacArthur.
billokc 02-11-2019, 08:00 PM What had been the Sonic on NW Hiway between Meridian and MacArthur will be a Shipley's Donuts. The building is still under remodeling, no opening date yet.

Yes! Been waiting for one to pop up somewhere close (we're at 36th/May, so not really close, but closer than MWC's is), thanks for the info...
I saw that today. Interesting.
Debzkidz 02-20-2019, 08:50 PM I hope they’re better than the one we visited last week in Houston. We stopped by on Saturday morning and the donuts were horrible. We threw them anyway. I’ve never seen my husband throw away donuts before!
Brett 02-20-2019, 09:32 PM Their 2nd location will be at NW 164th & Penn.
Is this proposed location still a go? I noticed the location on NW Expressway already has a sign up.
Brett 06-29-2019, 09:10 PM New OKC location on NW Expressway is finally open.
Executionist 07-02-2019, 08:03 AM New OKC location on NW Expressway is finally open.
Stopped by, more out of nostalgia, as we used to go to the Shipley's in Plano for years.
Still quite good, but there are other donut shops in OKC just as good these days, and probably won't be compelled to go out of my way to come by again. Glad they are here, though.
Thomas Vu 07-02-2019, 09:15 AM I also stopped by this morning. Had some of the big earl kolaches. I'm hoping they gave me 2 cheese ones cause I couldn't tell the difference between cheese and cheese and jalapeno. I did enjoy that they had a cheese sauce on the outside.
Was also told that the chocolate filling is the one to go for. I didn't get it though. Maybe next time
Cowpoke55 07-02-2019, 10:38 AM Used to stop by the Arlington location at least 3 mornings per week on the way to school (when I was young enough to eat that many doughnuts). The key is stopping before 9:30 when they're still fresh. If they've sat out longer than that then they're just as basic as everyone else. But they're damn good if they're fresh.
RadicalModerate 07-08-2019, 07:41 AM To me the test of a donut shop is their plain cake donuts. Yesterday, my wife brought home a box of cake donuts from Shipley's. In my opinion, they were as good or better than what you get at most Daylight Donut locations but not quite as good as those from my favorite shop, I [Heart/Love] Donuts in French Market Mall. I get the impression that Polar Donuts is the best place in town but I've never been there.
On the other hand, the taste of the lemon cream filled product from Shipley's was about as good as a filled "donut" can possibly get. I know for sure that we'll be going back for a few of those.
MikeLucky 08-05-2019, 12:27 PM Just drove by the Shipley's location in MWC and it looked like they were taking the signage down. Any info on this?

It's still listed as open on the Shipley's website.
bhawes 08-05-2019, 07:15 PM They are close went there this morning in drive thru they had a sign on inside window saying they are closing and list the other locations to visit.
midtownokcer 08-07-2019, 02:48 PM Well, that's disappointing. Not even a trace they were there except for the note on the door saying they're sorry for disappointing customers and that they can visit the NW Expy location.
Jersey Boss 08-07-2019, 04:51 PM Their 2nd location will be at NW 164th & Penn.
So what became of this location?
^
It looks like it died.
There is one franchisee for this market and they seem to be focused on the new NW Expressway location for now.
They closed that MWC site not long after the new place opened.
Jersey Boss 08-07-2019, 05:25 PM ^^ Thank you sir.
