View Full Version : Royal Crab (formerly Kwan's Kitchen)
Still don't know much about this place other than it is the old Fox and Hound space at 3031 W. Memorial and is to be some sort of Asian fusion.
They are spending a lot of money here.

They are now open and have $8 lunch specials.
A big, elaborate build out and just beautiful space.

jbkrems 02-28-2018, 09:43 PM Do they have a website in which they have a menu to look at?
stile99 03-01-2018, 07:37 AM A brief Google search resulted in:

Plutonic Panda 03-01-2018, 09:55 PM They need to update the exterior adding more plants, shrubs, and vines. This is a beautiful remodel and shows how much the game is upping in OKC.
Thomas Vu 03-01-2018, 10:15 PM I stopped by tonight and enjoyed it immensely. Interior is great, the staff was very knowledgeable about the menu, and the food was good.
I got the peking duck and the pot stickers

If I had to nitpick, heads up the pot stickers apparently take a long time to prepare. The main courses came out quick though. I can't wait to go through the lunch menu with how affordable it is.

okcwonder 03-11-2018, 03:27 PM IMO: Nothing special. Just a bunch of fufu on the dish to make it look "high class French dish" with the entree meal. Service was a little mixed for us and another couple. A little over priced, but I guess you pay for scenery, fufu, and the word "French" in their naming. Had better duck (not peking duck, but really it's just crispier skin with Chinese steam buns, Hoisin sauce, and veggies) at 23rd and Classen. I would just drive another 15 minutes for that. It comes to down to your taste palette. We would still prefer PF Chang. Is it worth a try? If you're going or you can spare the drive to 23rd and Classen, I would pass this.

What place are you talking about at 23rd & Classen?

I would also like to know this, could he be talking about Hy palace the mega buffet? I must say you lose a little cred when you say you’d prefer P.F. Chang’s.

Yeah... That was the moment I knew I wasn't reading a review from an actual food critic.
It's kind of like when someone compares other BBQ to Rib Crib for me.
Thomas Vu 03-12-2018, 02:26 PM It'd be hilarious if he was referring to Fung's kitchen.
HOT ROD 03-12-2018, 04:17 PM right. ... same owner/chef.
HOT ROD 03-12-2018, 04:18 PM but then again, Fung's is in Asia district whereas Kwan's is in memorial - completely different audience and (possibly) expectation between the two.
Thomas Vu 03-12-2018, 05:33 PM The only difference between the duck at Kwans and the duck at Fungs is that there are no bones in the one at Kwans.
okcwonder 03-20-2018, 01:06 PM This is my opinion of course and I sure hope I can voice my opinion?!??
Golden Phoenix have ducks and other bbq items. I never said they have peking duck, just better duck IMO. Grand House serves peking duck, but don't know where they gets their ducks from or if it's done back of kitchen.
I never told anyone to not eat there because of our experience/taste of food. I just said that we prefer PF Chang for Chinese food as a nearby destination(I didn't say authentic Chinese). If you have time to spare and drive to 23rd and Classen, I would go there over eating at this location. Otherwise give this a try or eat at other Chinese restaurant near by.

Thomas Vu 03-22-2018, 08:09 PM Wow. doing it big.
aDark 03-23-2018, 01:06 PM I am hesitant to make this post as I feel bad leaving a negative review. I am only doing so in the hopes that this feedback might find it's way to the owners to create positive change. Me and three of my co-workers ate lunch at Kwan's earlier this week. The service was poor and the food was average.
The awkward experience began as the hostess meandered around the restaurant while talking out loud as to where our foursome should be seated. She stopped in her tracks, nearly causing us to run into one another, to point out that they had a bar. She then waffled between several tables which were open. She was talking out loud, but not to any of us, as to where the best table would be. She proceeded to walk us to a table in the back corner of the restaurant, where we were seated and given menus. It was.... strange. The waiter was similarly awkward. He had a comment about everyone's drink order. The over-the-top talkativeness of our waiter reached a point of discomfort. We ordered our food, which was admittedly well-priced for the area. However, the food took forever to arrive even though the restaurant was maybe 30% full. Also, the sides/appetizers came out literally 1 minute before the entrees. (We didn't ask for the sides to come out as appetizers, but followed the waiter's suggestion to have them out first) The food was okay at best. It would have been better had it been served hot. I ordered the Beijing Beef and enjoyed it more than my co-workers. They ordered the lettuce wraps and were unimpressed.
The interior is beautifully done and it's obvious they paid attention to detail. It's a shame the service and food seem to be taking a second chair to the effort given to the atmosphere. As a former waiter and bartender, it was a painful meal to sit through. The whole experience lasted almost an hour, and the co-workers made it clear they didn't care to return.
Unrelated, it seemed that every other patron was a retiree or in assisted living. Who knows?
jbkrems 03-23-2018, 09:44 PM I have been into Kwan's twice and I agree with the comments of aDark made above. The first time I came in, I dealt with the same hostess. I still feel this is a restaurant that is working out the kinks, and since I come in and sit at the bar for lunch, I am willing to go and try another dish or two for lunch before pulling it from my lunch rotation. I do feel their lunch prices are hard to beat.

I went last night and loved it, the place is beautiful on the inside- complete with an underfoot koi pond as you walk in.
Wait staff and manager(owner?) were extremely kind and the latter offered to show me around after I complimented the interior- the first picture is of the event space upstairs which overlooks the lobby/koi pond.
Prices are extremely reasonable, I had champagne sweet and sour chicken which was amazing for $14 and a Kwan's exclusive Vanessa House beer for $4.
I would recommend this place to anyone, only complaint is I didn't really like the fried rice.
MadMonk 06-25-2018, 12:25 PM What's exclusive about Vanessa House beer? $4 isn't a bad price for it though.

I think he's saying that Vanessa House brews a beer just for sale at Kwan's Kitchen.
It's called Kwan's Special Brew and made with lemongrass and ginger (according to the VH FB page)

Ah, I see. Nice!
Thomas Vu 09-15-2018, 03:27 PM I forgot to mention at least a couple of weeks ago, they do offer dim sum on Saturday and Sunday.
corwin1968 12-22-2018, 11:49 AM My wife and I tried the Dim Sum today and it was excellent. Although Grand House has a handful of Dim Sum offerings that I prefer over Kwan's, for the most part, Kwan's is better.
We arrived as they opened at 10:00 and were told it would be 10-15 minutes before the food was ready but less than five minutes later they were bringing out food. My wife said the chicken feet were excellent, we both really liked the Shumai and the BBQ pork buns and I liked the fried shrimp ball and fried crab balls. We ordered several other things and all were good to excellent. The only weak spot was the tea. We ordered Oolong and Jasmine and both were rather weak.
We are very pleased to have a really good Dim Sum restaurant close by.
I asked the waitress if they get busy on weekends and she said Saturdays are steady but Sundays are extremely busy.
If you like Dim Sum and are in the area, I highly recommend Kwan's Kitchen.
We ate here a few weeks back after church on a Sunday. We came specifically for the Dim Sum. The inside is very nice and they sat us in the bar area. Overall the food was good although they were missing several items we've become accustomed to at Grand House. They weren't busy at all and I felt like they kept coming around with the same carts and not putting anything new on them. We also ordered chicken fried rice from the kitchen which we didn't get until we were almost done. I was going to tell them to forget it and then it came out. When adding up all of the stamps plus the rice the bill should have been about $55 but somehow it became $85 when they ran my card. They couldn't explain the difference or find my original card but they said that's what it was. We won't be back.
sooner88 12-27-2018, 01:14 PM We've been there once for dim sum and overall had a good experience. We typically rotate between Grand House and Fung's due to proximity, but we will be back here again soon. Based on their IG, they've continued to add items to their dim sum menu, as it was pretty small when we went. It is much easier to get a table here during the busy hours vs. GH or Fung's.
Thomas Vu 12-28-2018, 01:46 AM The owner is the same guy that does Fungs. Should be of Fungs quality, no?
HOT ROD 12-29-2018, 02:11 PM Depends more on the chef than the owner.
BTW, Fung's is old-school Cantonese dim sum. Kwan's seems to be more modern/fusion which might not be as good but is targeted at a more affluent/young audience/market.
rizzo 08-22-2019, 08:52 AM I noticed this place closed when I drove by last night. How long has it been closed?
I noticed this place closed when I drove by last night. How long has it been closed?
For months now.
corwin1968 08-22-2019, 10:13 AM We were at Fung's this weekend and my wife asked the owner if they might re-open Kwan's and her only response was to apologize for Kwan's closing. Kwan's is very close to our house and their dim sum, overall, was actually better than Fungs' so we are really hoping it re-opens and still has dim sum.
midtownokcer 08-22-2019, 10:30 AM I'm not surprised this closed. I went 3-4 times for dim sum and a few other times for dinner. The restaurant was beautiful, but service was never great, especially when it came to dim sum. We always had to order stuff off the menu and the frequency of the carts making the rounds was painfully slow when compared to places like Fung's and Grand House.
jbkrems 08-22-2019, 12:12 PM At least one manager and maybe some of Kwan's staff is over Masa Sushi on Memorial just east of Western Ave., across from Szechuan Bistro.

Last night was the same. I believe they have some kind of "free food" promotion going on.

That's good to know. When I went I recall liking the variety offered of sushi and ramen. The broth wasn't particularly flavorful and the noodles were overcooked. The portions of the ramen were very generous though. Going back, I plan to get the chirashi bowl
jbkrems 08-22-2019, 04:31 PM Anyone order any sushi lately at Masa?
corwin1968 08-22-2019, 05:22 PM Anyone order any sushi lately at Masa?
We ordered sushi a few weeks ago. The Memorial roll was good and I don't remember the other roll we ordered but it was just OK. The tuna and tamago nigiri were good. The eel was just so-so.
We'll definately go back.
ctchandler 08-22-2019, 09:05 PM Masa Sushi is owned by the Szechuan Bistro folks (right across the street) and I think Szechuan Bistro is a really good place to eat so I suspect Masa Sushi will be good as well.

Very close to opening.

Maybe the team from Krewe Cuisine on NW 23rd is trying to make a play for the far North OKC crowd.
Seriously though, "Cajun Chinese" is certainly a way to cut a new path in the restaurant industry...

Can't be much worse than "Okie Cajun" (sorry to all who love Cajun Kitchen, but they'd get laughed out of Louisiana).

I was really confused because the "menu" link at the top of the webpage doesn't show any Chinese dishes, although the syntax seems to be a non-native English speaker,
Then I noticed that the "menu" link half way down the page goes to a Chinese menu. I wonder if that is left over from Kwan's or if it is actually part of the new restaurant? We only ordered off the Kwan's menu once and I seem to remember it having a very small number of items.
If this is the same folks that own Fung's Kitchen and the Chinese menu is offered, we are going be very happy.
^
Yeah, it looks like the top menu of seafood and cajun dishes is the one for Royal Crab and the bottom one may be a leftover.
