Drove by this on 35 the other day, it's beautiful. Agree with some of the comments above... seems like an odd location. Seeing a "Patricia's" sign right next door is a little jarring lol

Im curious how much of the interior work has started. I'm guessing it's still at the framing and rough-in stage?

Hopefully further along than that. I'm unsure of current progress inside, but I've heard rumors in the industry that Boldt has quite the push to get done in time for the dedication.

You are right as far as not being finished by the Nov date. I just received an email from the ARchdiocese that the new date is Friday, Feb 17, 2023

Beautiful and meaningful. What a wonderful endeavor.

I confess that when I first heard of the location of this shrine, I was perplexed and almost disappointed that it wasn't going along the river closer to downtown or in a more prominent place where the many pilgrims will have better interaction with all that OKC has done. The more I think about it though, the prouder I am that the church chose a location which may act as a catalyst for renewal in an under-appreciated part of the city. I know that's not the primary point of the shrine, but it may be a happy by-product.

I visited the Shrine "campus" yesterday. It is truly remarkable. The museum is very very well done and the gift shop is great as well.
I do hope they add some design aspects over the coming years as it is pretty plain inside...not sure if that is by design or just based on capital available

From what I've observed, it's by design--because Blessed Stanley Rother was an ordinary man and the shrine reflects his mission.

You don't see stained glass. Everything seems to be plain and clean. Simplicity appears to be the style of this church to accentuate the natural light reflected thru the clear glass windows.

The only exception is the decor behind the altar and the entombed structure in the chapel that holds Rother's remains.

The exterior of the Rother Church is breath-taking.

My guess is that when more funds become available more of the buildings will be built and along with it more will be added to the Church. As I was leaving the dedication mass, I talked with an organ tuner, he said the shrine currently has an electronic organ but will have a pipe organ later. Its about getting the baisic Church built and later add to it. Think about the beautiful churches built in europe, It took hundreds of years to complete.

I hear you, but my sources at the Archdiocese have indicated there will be more tracery, other imagery, statues, etc. added to the main church in due time. Nothing over-the-top, but there are plans to do more. And in my opinion there should be; it needs it and I've talked to many who agree. That said, it's monumental and very well done.

And yes, fundraising is underway for a new organ. The Schoenstein company out of the San Francisco area has been selected to build it. $2M.

Good news. Personally, I would prefer to see a huge pipe organ and some stained exterior glass pieces to make it more like Our Lady of Victory National Shrine & Basilica in Lackawanna, NY.

Include pieces from Holy Angels Church that will be closed to become part of the Sacred Heart Parish.

This church was built to the specifications to eventually opt to become a Basilica. Let's do this in honor of Blessed Stanley Rother and the Oklahoma City Archdioceses, make the largest Roman Catholic Church in Oklahoma a glorious edifice that pilgrims will visit annually.

St. Stanley Rother Shrine & Basilica in Oklahoma City is what I hope to see in my lifetime.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you see churches in Europe, Central/South America or even older cities in the US that are ornately decorated, it took decades or centuries to get there. That was with the financial backing of kings and states. Stained glass is usually part of a second phase of modern church ornamentation. I would assume more art, statues, and a pipe organ might also come in later later phases. The $50MM campus is built with the intention to last centuries and different generations of shrine parishioners and Oklahoma Catholics will have a chance to leave their mark on it.

Not to mention, just installing a pipe organ can take years to complete. I think the average is like 3-4 years.

I bet they could get a used pipe organ from a larger catholic church that has been shuttered in other parts of the country. But it would still take years to move and install and likely many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Thanks for posting that! I was wondering if this was still on track. Glad to see that it is. Though I'm not very religious, this will be good for OKC. Hopefully will entice more international travelers here giving more momentum towards international flights and buildings like this are usually beautiful and well kept.

Do we know if this is still the overall site design they are working towards? It looks pretty close other than the south wing and some out buildings, but that might just be a question of time and funding.

It's hard to tell if the concrete in the "Zocalo" area is stained concrete (intentionally), or if it's just stained from the dirt on site during construction. Looks a little rough in contrast to the fresher looking concrete areas. Similar issue with the parking lots. Hopefully they're able to get that all cleaned up and looking new again. Otherwise, this is an absolutely stunning facility. Kind of crazy to think that it will be there for centuries to come.

Yes, I believe the overall site design is still the goal.. The GC did tell me that the buildings surrounding the south portion of the courtyard would be built in the future as resources became available.

I think that was intended to be included in future phases as they raise more funds. Same thing with lack of a pipe organ. That is coming later. I think this complex is far from being “completed.”

These images remind me of the old "The Vanished Splendor" books from about 30 years ago. They were post card pix of different houses and buildings from the central part of the city that were taken in the 1910s-30s. What was striking was the houses in Mesta Park or Heritage Hills were new, with fresh sidewalks and tiny trees.

I think this is a 50ish year project on the main build out.

Let me preface my post by saying I'm not catholic and not that familiar with shrines. People here are talking about people traveling to see this shrine. I searched Google and there are already 72 shrines and many are basilicas so why would people want to make a special trip to see this one when there are others much older with much more history mo, stained glass, more beautiful, and artwork? There aren't international flights going into Tuscon because of the beautiful Mission San Xavier del Bac built in 1783.

I think it is a great addition to OKC.
