I have been sitting on this for a while, but now it's okay to post. My good friend, Ross Harper, is opening a brewery just south of Film Row. As of yesterday, he signed the lease at 704 W Reno Ave. According to the current renderings, he will have the largest beer garden in Oklahoma City.

I will have more updates as things develop.

Wow, west downtown is getting an amazing amount of investment!

That's a great location with the surrounding area most likely being the next boom area.

Angry Scotsman Brewing has signed a lease to create a brewery, taproom and beer garden at 704 W. Reno.

The 5,000 square foot building was built in 1930 but has been vacant for some time.

Plans call for the land immediately east of the structure – with nice of views of the skyline – to be a 5,000 square foot patio with shade structures and plenty of seating.

The new Oklahoma City Boulevard, which will follow the footprint of the recently relocated I-40, is directly south and will be starting construction this summer.

Owner Ross Harper has been a passionate home brewer since 2005 and after leaving Oklahoma for a job in Indianapolis, continued to follow the changing Oklahoma liquor laws and decided it was the right time to return and 'go pro' with his own brewery.

Harper is originally from Glasgow, Scotland and first came to Oklahoma for a start-up opportunity after finishing his PhD in chemistry in Miami, Florida.

Hoping to have broad appeal, Angry Scotsman will feature 4 beers year round and have more seasonal varieties.

Harper has executed a lease on the property and will take possession on July 1st, and plans to start renovation and general work after all the necessary permits are obtained.

Angry Scotsman will joining a suddenly thriving downtown brewery scene, with Anthem and Twisted Spike already open and Stonecloud, Elk Valley and Prairie all in process.

This is great, but is it a stretch to call this film row still? Not that I have a better name...

Pete

It's why I called it the Film Row 'area'. :)

BTW, this seems to be the first new business that has been motivated by the coming boulevard.

Certainly won't be the last, as that entire corridor effectively turned its back on where the boulevard will run, because the old I-40 was elevated.

In the shorter term, will make for a pretty ugly drive through the new stretch but I'm sure lots of places will re-orient to face the new street.

How high of ceilings does a brewery typically need for the big beer making thingys?

They do need some height for the vats but this building has a barrel roof which helps:

Got a tour of the building from Ross on Friday evening. Nothing has really started since his focus has been on getting the Co-Op going. Once it opens on 10/1 and he goes to market, he will begin to shift focus on his future home off Reno.

I attended a private party on New Years Eve at the brewery. Their beer is good and they're good people. They're open with a cozy, temporary set up that I recommend visiting. And, the final design of this place is going to be amazing. Their interior renderings are posted in the brewery and they're impressive. They'll have a nice bar space, plenty of room, and a huge outdoor area.

Although it would be a copywrite violation, Willie would make a great Mascot.

Their full-blown taproom opens tomorrow (Saturday) at noon.

Looks very impressive and they also have that big outdoor space.

Was there last night and loved it.

Probably the best setting for any of the breweries and they have a wide selection.

Are there heaters on that patio? If not I really wish more restaurants in OKC would place heaters on their patios. I don’t know why so many don’t.

Pete

Not yet but they are planning to build pergolas and other structures out there and I'm sure they will consider adding heaters at that time.

The inside is very big and the patio alone is 5,000SF.

Went to the opening today. It was nice to see a nice big tap list with some really good beer, and their patio is fantastic!

Yes, and Micheal has done a great job of navigating through generational change. But, my deeper question is what is a better use of the property-a business that services Porsche automobiles, or a business that makes beer?

Finally hit up the new taproom on Tuesday before a concert at Jones. Must say their taproom is the best in the city now and they have a crazy amount of beers on tap. They even have three or four of their beers with Nitro. Their patio is huge and setup nicely with an amazing view of the Devon and BOK towers. They really hit this out of the park.

It is a great taproom. Lots of potential for that whole section of Reno to be redeveloped.

Curious, what makes it the best taproom?

It is really nice and large inside, has tons of beers on tap and the patio is huge, and east-facing with a great skyline view.

There is also an outdoor service window.

They plan some outdoor pergolas / shade structures down the road.

Large taproom with a nice clean layout + large variety of solid beers that people actually drink.Pretty much what Pete says above. Doesn’t hurt that Rusty Kiltpin is my favorite beer on tap.

Can't wait till Lively opens up shop a block away.

Last I knew, breweries here weren't allowed to put anything in the taproom that they hadn't brewed. Is that still the case? All the beers on tap are Angry Scotsman creations? I wish they could do guest taps. Went to the Great Divide taproom in Denver and they had a couple guest taps from other parts of the country. Was a neat way to foster collaboration and try some different things.

Frenzy is currently contract brewing their beer at Angry Scotsman until their facility in Edmond opens. That's why they can sell those Frenzy beers at Angry Scotsman

Yep, that's basically what I'd heard. So I guess my question was inaccurate. They aren't all Angry Scotsman creations, but they are all brewed on-site.
