Clue me in please. The wife says I'm missing the donut boat. Some place called Hurts is suppose to be the best. She heard there was one coming to Edmond but I can't find a thing on it. Anyone?

Some place called Hurts is suppose to be the best. She heard there was one coming to Edmond but I can't find a thing on it. Anyone? Great donuts - like burgers, pizza and BBQ - are in the eye (or mouth) of the beholder. I know people who rave over Hurts Donuts - and they look amazing. However, my wife and I don't really care for their style - take a simple, great bakery item and then try to hard by adding too much stuff and end up ruining it completely. We are more of purists (maple, chocolate, and old fashioned). We patronize the Daylight Donuts on 2nd (near I-35) fairly regularly. They are not the greatest. But, IMO they are pretty fresh tasting and simple. Plus, if you catch them as soon as they come out of the fryer they are awesome. Our all time favorites come from Missy's in Guthrie. One of my least favorites is Brown's Bakery - never had a good donut there. All that said, I find the grandkids and little cousins love Hurts. As for an Edmond location.... no idea. My take is similar to this one. Highly subjective. I don't mind that they add so much stuff. Hurts donuts are too dense (same with Round Rock, but that's another story for later). My favorite donut place is on NW 39th and rockwell. jjjumper 06-10-2017, 03:21 PM The franchise owner announced it on Facebook, but hasn't announced location(s) yet. Rom 06-11-2017, 08:23 AM I highly recommend JJs doughnuts on 2nd and Bryant. Really good doughnuts and by far best Kolaches I've found in Edmond. SoonerDave 06-12-2017, 09:20 AM Ch 9 ran a story last week I think saying Hurts was going to Midtown in OKC. Now, whatever kind of donut you like, or don't like, (and I will say I'm a donut traditionalist), I get what BBates said about putting a bunch of extra stuff on them and kinda spoiling the basic treat...I get that completely (which is why I think the mom-n-pop donut places do so well...Twist Donuts on S Penn just north of 89th makes as good a basic, traditional glazed donut as I've ever had)..but let me tell ya....if you haven't at least let yourself try an Apple Pie donut from Hurts, you're cheating yourself. It's one of the most absurdly delicious things I've ever eaten. Just try it. Once :) :) catch22 06-12-2017, 09:34 AM I agree with BBates, I prefer a classic donut to Hurts. Hurts is a copy of VooDoo in Portland, and I wasn't a fan of those either. I like light, fluffy standard topping (glazed, maple, chocolate, etc.) donuts, not a fan of the heavy, doughy craft donuts at Hurts or VooDoo. To each their own, glad they are seeing some success and expanding. FighttheGoodFight 06-12-2017, 09:43 AM We get free donuts from Hurts occasionally. I just don't like them. I find them dense and not very moist. I stick to Daylight Donuts. jerrywall 06-12-2017, 01:22 PM We get free donuts from Hurts occasionally. I just don't like them. SoonerDave 06-12-2017, 01:36 PM Yeah, taste in donuts definitely vary. I prefer the glazed donuts from Homeland over Krispy Kreme, and people think I'm nuts. Unless you get a *piping hot* donut from KK, I find them entirely unremarkable. And their non "basic" donuts were more then "meh" for us. After they first opened up and we'd tried some following the initial hysteria, I'm not sure we went back maybe a handful of times before the I-240 location closed down. Plain glazed, chocolate glazed, or maybe a jelly-filled is good enough for me. I think their potato flour made the texture a little "too" perfect, if that makes sense. But I'm still having cravings for an Apple Pie donut from Hurts. Mmmmmmm.... Jersey Boss 06-12-2017, 02:06 PM It seems that the doughnut world is divided between those who prefer cake and those whose preference is yeast. If you engage in dunking your doughnut, cake is the preferable type. Urbanized 06-12-2017, 02:37 PM Heck, you don't even have to be a dunker to prefer cake. jerrywall 06-12-2017, 02:49 PM And now the great donut wars of 2017 commences! Roger S 06-12-2017, 02:49 PM I like both types but I don't like the stale cereal crusted donuts at Hurt's...... My favorite cakes are the apple sauce and blueberry from Brown's. shawnw 06-12-2017, 03:16 PM I'm a fan of Hurts exotic arrangements for special circumstances, but they're not the best donuts ever and that's fine. I'm not actually TOO picky about my donuts, but will say that I recently tried the donuts at Belle Kitchen (deep deuce) and was, unexpectedly, blown away. Talk about tasting the difference...... SoonerDave 06-12-2017, 03:29 PM And now the great donut wars of 2017 commences! Hey, just for the record, no donut wars here. I'm a lover, not a figher. Love to eat 'em, love to dunk em, :) No hater of ANYONE's donuts here. Just saying that an Apple Pie donut from Hurts (as would many others) be a special treat once in a while. Just found KK's to be unspectacular, but good if you got one really hot. Like I said in an earlier post, I loved a plain glazed donut from Twist on 89th and Penn on Sunday, so I'm an equal opportunity donut tester :) :) LOL jerrywall 06-12-2017, 03:39 PM I just miss Winchell's on Broadway in Edmond. Their donut holes were amazing. Every 4th of July since I was a kid someone would pick up a big box of them while we camped out waiting for the parade. I may have to make a trip. TheTravellers 06-12-2017, 08:54 PM I'm a fan of Hurts exotic arrangements for special circumstances, but they're not the best donuts ever and that's fine. Yeah, Belle Kitchen's are pretty good - can't remember all the ones we've had there, probably about 4-5 kinds, but the maple bacon ones are the best, in our opinion. Their macarons are pretty fabulous too. Only been to the May Ave location, but the quality shouldn't vary between them. rezman 06-12-2017, 09:31 PM Great donuts - like burgers, pizza and BBQ - are in the eye (or mouth) of the beholder. Every Friday we get our doughnuts at work from Missy's . Two of our coworkers live in Guthrie and on their way in they bring us some. They are pretty darn good and usually still warm when we get them. They make great halepeno sausage rolls too. Thomas Vu 06-12-2017, 09:32 PM I feel a donut tour coming on.... You can't beat their lunch either - Half sandwich with enchilada soup (followed by donuts to go). There's still a Winchell's in Enid?? Roger S 06-13-2017, 10:02 AM SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! There's still a Winchell's in Enid?? Yes and there is still a Godfathers Pizza there too..... not the kind located in a Love's but an actual sit down and they bring the pizza to you Godfathers. jerrywall 06-13-2017, 10:13 AM Yes and there is still a Godfathers Pizza there too..... not the kind located in a Love's but an actual sit down and they bring the pizza to you Godfathers. I'm headed to Enid!! BBatesokc 06-14-2017, 10:47 AM FYI - Missy's in Guthrie posted this to Facebook about an hour ago... We are happy to announce that there will be a new Missy's location along I35! Details on grand opening soon! I REALLY hope it's further south and close to Edmond. That said, I've gone to their drive through only location in Guthrie and honestly found their donuts to not be as fresh tasting as from the sit down location. I hope this new location doesn't have that same feel. A true brick and mortar sit down location on I-35 near Edmond would be perfect (also serving lunch). NoOkie 06-16-2017, 04:36 PM The old fashioned cake donuts at Route 66 Donuts in Bethany are fantastic. |
