Outback Steakhouse planning new concept restaurant in North OKC (http://www.okctalk.com/content.php?r=381-Outback-Steakhouse-planning-new-concept-restaurant-in-North-OKC)

As a part of aggressive expansion plans, Outback Steakhouse has filed plans to build a new location in North Oklahoma City.

http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/outback.jpg

The plans clearly indicate 'relocation', which may imply the closing of the long-standing Edmond Outback at 3600 Broadway Extension which opened in the mid-90's.

However, an official with Outback replied to an email inquiry, "I am unable to confirm any plans for Oklahoma City at this time, but I can tell you we are interested in the area".

The plans also clearly show the location to be on the south side of Memorial Road near Quail Springs Mall.

The parent of Outback, Bloomin' Brands Inc., went public in 2012 to raise capital to refresh and expand the popular steakhouse as well as its other brands, Carrabba's, Bonefish Grill and Fleming's Steakhouse.

Outback unveiled a new restaurant design in 2015 to replace the ubiquitous Australian-style restaurants that have become well associated with the brand.

According to the Bloomin' Brands, their new restaurants feature “a 'Modern Australia' design with decor that mirrors the indigenous flora and fauna, adventure, geography, and leisure of modern day Australia. Guests will also enjoy a spacious bar area that is connected directly to the outdoor dining patio and features a community table, as well as customized seating and furnishings.”

Outback is based in Tampa, Florida and operates almost 1,000 locations in 23 countries.

well... the upside is that outback removed "steakhouse" from their branding. that kind of stretched the boundaries of truth in advertising. : )

I've completely stopped paying attention (let alone custom) to the Memorial Corridor, is that the location that has been several restaurants but none have stuck around?

You can see the cleared land in the images.

Believe it was just a parking lot before... This is a total new build.

And the theme of abandoned restaurants on south Broadway continues.

Looking through the history of street view, it doesn't appear that there was ever anything between the Vitamin Shoppe and Skechers but parking lot.

Right, just to the south is the old Bolton's Sports Grill and Nino's.

Both are empty.

The cleared land in the satellite image is actually the Sleep Number store that is next door to the Vitamin Shoppe. It has since been built and completed. I image the new Outback is actually going to the east of that in the parking lot.

I used to like Outback, but the last 5-6 times I've been they have royally messed up my steaks. Not worth messing with any more. They do still have a good burger, though.

It is interesting they are moving so close to Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn.

Curious as to why you would keep going back so many times after they "royally messed up your steaks"? Personally, I give places about 2 tries and if they can't hack it, they're off the rotation/list pretty much forever since there's almost always an alternative to them.

Not all of those were my choice, and the Edmond location is by far the worst, so I would give them another shot. But I haven't been back for a couple of years now.

Actually went to the Edmond location last night - not my choice. Our son really likes the location in Tulsa near his home, so when he came into town with the grand baby we said we'd take them.

Noticed as we were walking in, two large signs out front that stated the Edmond location is closing in Aug. due to the new Memorial location.

I say, "good riddance." I ordered the prime rib and the wife had some other cut of steak. Son had the prime rib too.

My prime rib was cooked medium rare, but was very chewy and not flavorful. Wife had the same comments about her's. $100 meal that was maybe worth $30.

Good reminded why I have not patronized an Outback in years.

Want good prime rib in that area of Edmond for a decent price? Go to Charleston's across the street, IMO.

Just because somebody says Outback's steaks are bad, does not make Outback's steaks bad...only in that persons individual taste and opinion which I respect. I would appreciate it if you would do the same to me....don't judge and ridicule me because I enjoy Outback's steaks! Apparently a lot of people enjoy eating there.....there are over 1000 locations in 23+ countries. And if whoever really believes that Waffle House has better streaks, well more power to them.

For a middle-tier chain restaurant I would say Outback is pretty decent. Definitely one of the better restaurants in its class, superior to Chili's, Applebee's, TGI Friday's, etc. However I wouldn't put it on the same level with something like Mickey Mantle's. That's just me though. Ironically I would rather eat at Outback than Cattleman's based on the steaks I've had alone.

I love the Ranch and Morton's is my favorite restaurant but when I don't feel like dressing up and spending $500 to feed my family of five......Outback is one of our go tos. Nothing wrong with the steak, It isn't the Ranch but it isn't $50 for a steak either. The $10 t bone at Waffle is also pretty tasty at 3 am. The steak is so thin...I think the only option is rare or well done.

Have eaten steaks from both quite a few times and I would have to say that Cattlemans is a bit better IMO. Both decent. Had a Rib Eye from Mackie McNears for the first time in a few years and it reminded why it's been a few years since I have been there.

Waffle House over outback 100%
Just have em kiss it over the heat for a few seconds to make that 1/2” t-bone a lovely mid-rare.

Outback on the other hand is an exercise in “might as well.” Might as well go to a real restaurant.

Don't know why everyone dogs Cattlemen's. Order the prime cuts and they are very good. It isn't The Ranch, or Red, or Mahoganey, but doesn't come with the prices either. It will consistently be better than Outback. Texas Roadhouse is better than Outback. Outback is too inconsistent between different ones. I quit going because of the inconsistency, except the consistency of over cooking.

This forum can be pretty annoying when it comes to dining. People fail to realize is that to many in the lower or middle class, Outback, Chili’s, etc. are REAL, NICE restauarants. For many, spending $100 on a family dinner is a real treat. And that means taking the family to Outback, or to Chili’s, etc. I’m sure they’d love to go to the Ranch or Cattleman’s, but not everyone can afford a $300 family dinner when $100 is already a big deal.

Try walking in the door to Outback on a Friday or Saturday night. You’ll be waiting an hour for a table. Heck, here in denver theres a wait at Outback on most weeknights during prime dinner hours. Weekend wait times can be 2-3 hours.

I guess all they serve is absolute horse ****? People line up on the weekends and wait an hour or more for horse ****.

I think there is a difference between “best” and “best value”. If the discussion is about whether something is good or the best, then it really isn’t about what it costs. If you want to add qualifiers that is great. But it doesn’t mean a discussion about good or best is social commentary. And in the end, it’s about our judgement of what makes best according to our opinion. I have eaten at the Ranch and at Outback. It isn’t a slam at Outback patrons that I believe the Ranch is way better. I just can’t afford to eat there very often but I know how good it is.

The attitude is that since it’s not the best, it is the worst. It’s a typical theme on this forum, especially in the dining forum. Outback cooks a good steak, it won’t knock your socks off but comparing it to a Dollar General steak is pretty ridiculous.

No one says Outback is the worst. If we ignore the ridiculous exaggerated comments on the margins we can have much better discussions based in reality.

We live near the NW Expressway location. Over the past 20 years, we've had a uniformly BAD experience eating there. Each and every time the steaks have been mediocre to bad. The last time was about 2 years ago. My steak was inedible. It was so full of gristle I couldn't chew it. I tried cutting into different parts but the it was bad all through. Not only that, but the service has also been very poor. There are too many steak options for me to waste time going back there again.

What I have noticed is that they do their signature sirloin well. Everytime I have ordered a premium steak....I regret it. I stick to the sirloin now.

Texas Roadhouse and Saltgrass are the same price point as Outback, and I've found they have consistently better steaks. Cattleman's is around the same price and they're better too, as well as being local.

Bill's Steakhouse and Saloon on SW 89th has a steak dinner for like 9 bucks. You get an 8 oz sirloin with a potato. It's not bad, but I certainly wouldn't pretend that it's one of OKC's top steakhouses.

Overall I think comments on this board are pretty fair. With the vast majority of commentators on here it is NOT a binary thing. But we don’t have to say it’s the best if we don’t think it is. People shouldn’t get their noses out of joint if someone thinks differently or has a strong opinion.

I haven't been to Outback in years, yet I will say that the last time we ate there they were doing some sort of steak and wine special. The steak was okay, but the wine was exceptional. It was The Dreaming Tree Crush by Dave Matthews. Yes. That Dave Matthews. Texas Roadhouse and Outback has about the same price point. Salt Grass is about 4 to 5 dollars higher and cattlemans is even higher than that. That's a huge difference that adds up. A fair comparison would be if the Bill's Steakhouse and salon is better than Texas Roadhouse or Outback
