I'm a filmmaker and new business owner. I'm one of those who always thought he'd have to move away to have a film and video career. However, there always seemed to be just enough work in film and video to keep me around. With the growth of the industry-despite the film incentive going down-and the overall economic success of the city in general, I no longer feel like I need to move. I can stay here and do great. A shameless plug for my work can be found here: patrickkirk.com (http://patrickkirk.com). A shameless plug for my new venture can be found here: indianheadpictures.com (http://www.indianheadpictures.com). Staying involved and keeping tabs on what is going on with the future of the city is of great interest to me. I'm especially optimistic about Film Row and the Farmer's Market districts. I hope move my company to Film Row as soon as possible. So, that's me. Look forward to interacting with all of you! Very Good ! Welcome tomokc 08-07-2013, 01:24 PM I'm also a long-time admirer of OKCTalk. I created a profile and will try to attend next week's get-together. I work in investments, my wife in health care, and although we live in the NW OKC 'burbs, we might live in the CBD if we were 20 years younger (OK - 30 years younger, but either way that ship sailed a long time ago). I'm a longtime lurker on this fabulous forum. I decided to take the next step and join all the cool kids on okctalk. As a 44 year-old lifelong OKC resident, I've loved every minute of watching my beloved city's transformation over the last 15 years. I've traveled to nearly every major city in the US, and only recently have I felt that OKC could hold their own with what many of those cities offered. OKC has done a lot of catching up over the last few years. I can't wait to take part in discussions on what the future holds for us. Pete 10-29-2013, 01:45 PM :Welcome: Welcome Nick! I'm in the second semester of my freshman year at the University of Central Oklahoma, studying professional media with the goal of becoming a broadcast journalist - I've been told for the last 4 years that I have the voice for radio and I was recognized by OSM for many of the articles I wrote for my high school paper. I've lived in Oklahoma since my family moved here from Georgia in 2007. I speak adequate German after 4 years of study in high school and hope to study abroad in either Germany or Austria. I'm a huge fan of classic rock, so riding around in my car, you'll be treated to an expansive playlist of Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Miller, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and all the usual suspects. My favorite comedians are Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Bill Engvall, Katt Williams, and Dave Chappelle. I don't care too much for sports, but I'll happily watch an Atlanta Falcons game if given the chance. Politically, I'm a progressive independent and I hold a strong dislike of the two-party system to the point where I'll vote for a far-right independent/Libertarian/Constitution candidate with whom I disagree before settling for a Democrat or Republican. I wasn't old enough to vote in 2012, having turned 18 in December, but I wouldn't have been able to vote for my candidate of choice, Rocky Anderson, anyway. I participated in the Occupy movement, but unlike many left-leaning folks, I'm an ardent supporter of the right to bear arms and I think most liberals are too happy to blame an inanimate object than to ask the hard questions about the underlying social issues that cause crime and mass shootings. I love discussing politics, history, and religion, but I have no tolerance for people who discount others based simply on their religious or political views. Glad to be here! I've been watching this board for quite a while and it is a great resource for anyone wanting to learn about nearly anything OKC related. Lately I worked on helping Mayor Cornett's reelection campaign a little and was very glad OKC chose to stay the course that has changed the city so dramatically just since I've been here. The renaissance of OKC I have experienced was the reason I stayed here rather than moving back "home". Those two zips straddle 23rd Street near the Asian District and you'll get a fell for what you get for your money. Both those zips are great, but there are some small pockets of sketchiness. Huskie61 01-15-2015, 02:41 PM Hello, I was raised in Shady Nook and didn't know that it was an economically depressed area until much later in life. I'm probably the oldest of the old here at 71 years. I worked at Cattleman's Cafe in 1961 and then went to work at the Forum Cafeteria in OKC until I joined the USAF. My name is Huskie1because I flew on HH-43 helicopters in the AF that were named "Huskie." I retired from the AF and returned to the OKC area and worked at the VA Hospital until I retired from there and now I travel and mess around (hobbies). ShadowStrings 02-13-2015, 04:02 PM I posted some of my background here (http://www.okctalk.com/current-events-open-topic/40109-how-did-you-come-love-okc-cities-general.html#post867106) the other day, but I figured I would introduce myself on this thread as well. I was born in Enid and lived in and around that area until college. I graduated from high school in 2009 and then spent five and a half years working on my undergrad and graduate degrees in Stillwater. I finished my BS in business administration in December 2012 and my MS in accounting in December 2014. I am a public accountant by trade. I had an internship in downtown OKC during the summer of 2013 and just started working full-time (for the same firm) at the beginning of this year. I will be moving downtown very soon, which I am very excited about. I have visited OKC throughout my life, but now that I live here, I would love recommendations for pretty much everything. I'm single and living on my own for the first time, so I have to figure out this whole "being an adult" thing. :) The "Ask Anything About OKC" section has been helpful, and I will post there if I have specific questions. I have many interests such as traveling, tennis (and watching most sports), playing the violin, learning German, trivia, and Netflix. I would love to know more about what kind of tennis clubs or activities there are in the city as well as how I could get started (or at least see if I actually enjoy) rowing. I began reading OKCTalk in late 2012/early 2013 because I heard a rumor about a new tower being built downtown, and I stumbled upon the mystery tower thread. I spent most of my time in that thread at first, but I slowly began reading other threads, and now I read OKCTalk (primarily in the "Development and Buildings" section) on a daily basis. Thirstygoat 04-04-2015, 03:32 PM Hello! I found OKCtalk while googling info on OKC when I was thinking of taking a job in OKC. I must say there are a lot of exciting things going on and a ton of growth which is certainly part of the allure for me to come to OKC. I am a Texan who attended OU for undergrad and loved my time in the state - friendly people, always felt safe, great cost of living and the life long friends and connections I had made. I've been living in Houston for the past 8 years. There are aspects I love and others I absolutely hate about living here. The traffic is just horrible, I will leave it at that. Things I love are the restaurants, parks, neighborhoods and museums. When evaluating this new job, I used OKCTalk as my guide to the city to try to see if OKC would have what I needed to be happy. Restaurants - Most of the recommendations and commentaries on restaurants were spot on. There are some excellent places to eat that really are top notch. Parks - this is something I didn't get to see much of other than Lake Hefner and the Myriad Gardens park. I would definitely like to see more walking/nature trails. Neighborhoods - I am not really a suburban kind of guy, nor am I really super modern cold sterile kind of living. Your lively discussion of the neighborhoods helped me hone the areas I wanted to look at as well as which hotels to stay in. Ultimately I decided to get a place in Deep Deuce. One thing I found out about living in Houston as that I largely stick to a 1-3 mile radius of where I lived, so a neighborhood with an identity is important to me. Museums - Didn't check any out but I did drive by the art museum. I will be moving to OKC soon and I am excited to undertake a new adventure and to be a part of a growing city. Thanks for all the info! Plutonic Panda 04-04-2015, 03:36 PM Parks in OKC are a hit and miss. There are many more great parks here then we get credit for; the city just doesn't seem to do a good job of marketing them. There is an awesome new trail system being built which is paving way to connect more parks and the river, so that is cool. Here is a website for all of the parks. http://www.okc.gov/parks/ But welcome to the forum and you'll enjoy Deep Deuce. It is an awesome up and coming area that is starting to rival Uptown Dallas. I honestly don't know much about Houston to compare it to. You'll have Bricktown for a close walk and I'm betting on some really cool announcements for Bricktown soon. Thirstygoat 04-05-2015, 10:23 AM Thanks will definitely check this out. Urbanized 04-05-2015, 10:30 AM If you're looking for hiking/nature trails, try this place: http://www.okc.gov/parks/martin_park/ jccouger 06-05-2015, 04:51 PM I never correctly introduced myself, this might be taboo but I post pretty frequently on this forum & I want you guys to get to know me a little bit better. My name is John Crist. You can friend request me on FB if you like, no reason to hide my personal identity. Any opinion I share here I'm comfortable having my face attached with. I was born in Moore, OK in 1988. Have lived in the OKC area my entire life, & probably will for the rest of it. I attended Northeast Acadamy where I met my future wife (recently engaged!) & went to the University of Oklahoma where I I studied business with an emphasis on Supply Chain Management. I also minored in Health & Exercise Science & became certified as a personal trainer. While attending OU I worked for OU's men's basketball team as a student manager. After I graduated I took a job at Weldon Truck Parts (headquartered in OKC with 18 locations nation wide, in 6 states) working in inventory control & purchasing. I've been here for close to 4 years now, and its been pretty good to me. I recently just purchased my first home in Edmond, OK after living in SE OKC for quite sometime. IMO OKCtalk.com is the best run & civil forum on the entire internet. You will never see a lack of trolling & disrespect on any public forum as you do here. I'm a development junky, love buildings & architecture & I'll probably read this website until the day I die. I know I'm not a n00by, so no need to welcome me. Just wanted to give you guys a better idea of who I actually am. |
