New research labs being built.


STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State University will break ground on a new laboratory building that’s funded in part by an anonymous donation of $1 million.

The university says the gift and a matching $1 million contribution from the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology will allow them to begin work for the new engineering and technology lab for undergraduate students.

OSU says enrollment in engineering programs has doubled at the university in the past decade and the funding allows for the development of modern laboratories that provide hands-on education at the school.

The building will house 14 undergraduate research labs, a lecture hall and student-project space.

The university plans to break ground on the project Saturday.

It will be interesting to see if the planning commission approves the new apartment complex. We really need to encourage the owners on The Strip, Campus Corner and down Knoblock to bring in more businesses. Retail and restaurantsare needed in this area.

Unfortunately, Stillwater has a number of people who want to keep the old as is. One elderly woman has been writing long winded commentaries in the local paper about the need to protect the residential neighborhood at 12th and Western from commercial rezoning. Earlier she helped lead a successful campaign to continue making do with keeping the old junior high downtown as the community center. Other people, including myself, thought it should be torn down and replaced with an actual community center, like they did in Enid. Probably not a too bad decision, though, because if a newly built community center required raising the city sales tax from a vote, citizens probably would have rejected it.

I don't mind the plans for the apartment complex, if it comes with a good developer. It simply comes with living in a college town and the after effect of OSU buying and clearing out a large ghetto area where mostly students lived. But would rather the developers construct the exterior of the parking garage to make it look like apartments, rather than an obvious eyesore of an ugly multi-level parking garage.

Controversial Block 34 has its own sign. Formerly, it was the site of a lumber yard and a plumbing store. City of Stillwater bought and cleared it in case it was needed for a new community center. Those plans were nixed and months later the city still doesn't know what to do with it. The mayor looked at several plans to make it an outdoor gathering spot, but she couldn't find the wow factor she was looking for. The city council relieved itself of that problem by forming a committee to study it. I think a private developer would do a better job, while providing tax revenue. Apparently, none are interested in acquiring the block. Stillwater Community Center is in background to the right.

Possibly real estate prices and leases have gone up so much in the areas, due to new apartment complex construction, that a lot of new businesses are going to be priced out of the market until prices come down. IGA got priced out of there. It would still be there, instead of Sprouts, if nothing new was going on. Not many businesses have the money Sprouts has.

I'm hoping for more retail on the ground floor of these apartment complexes. Not that we need another sandwich shop or nail salon, but you should be providing some sort of services. Especially with this so close to campus.

I was really hoping for retail on the first floor, especially since the largest side fronts Duck St. If land wasn't expensive and someone was smart they would add more retail on The Strip and Campus Corner. With ~1,500 more beds coming we need more restaurants and shopping.

I always thought someone with a bit more imagination could have utilized Cordell in conjunction with BP Stadium. Instead of a building right next to it, it could be used as the Grand Entrance to a Fun Zone type of thing or something. And utilize the building as lodging. That seems to be the trendy thing now a days.

Planet Fitness to open in Stillwater next year. 20,000 sq. ft. To go in the cleared off land across the street from the south side of Wal-Mart on Perkins Rd. Recently a newly built Spin City Laundry opened on the same cleared off land. That area, formerly of old run down houses has needed to move on to commercial development for a very long time.

Going back to the first post on the thread, since my son is starting up at OSU in the fall as an engineering major, I've had the opportunity on a couple of occasions to tour and spend time in the new CEAT lab, which is called Endevour. It's absolutely incredible, and very unique among the colleges we visited. It was what finally pushed my son to commit to going to OSU next year. This isn't the type of resources I've seen provided to undergrads typically.

I need to check the it Wichita. It looks like a pretty cool town. I’ve been holding out for the extended Heartland Flyer(is that induced demand!?!? LOL ;) ) for a Wichita trip, but I make go ahead and take the off beaten path this summer.

I loved living in Wichita. Old Town is fun (a lot like Bricktown), the river makes for a great run, and check out Wichita Brewing Co. and Pizzeria. That was our favorite spot outside downtown where we lived. It's a super easy 2 hour drive from OKC.

I've been to Wichita once, for an OU/Wichita State basketball game at the end of 2017, and was not super impressed, but would like to go back someday since it's an extremely quick trip (barely longer than OKC -> Tulsa). Dan, do you have any other restaurant recommendations besides Wichita Brewing Co?

Also at a cost of $60 million, OSU's McKnight Center for the Performing Arts will open this Fall. Excitement is building as OSU will have a bigger capacity auditorium than the one at Stillwater High School, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra will celebrate the opening with performances on October 12 and 13th. The OSU Symphony Orchestra packs the house when it performs one of the great symphonies, such as Beethoven's 3rd, so this great place shouldn't be too big for OSU and Stillwater.

I moved away in 2013 so take my recommendations with a grain of salt, but in addition to Wichita Brewing Co., we also liked Public (in Old Town), Wasabi sushi (Old Town), The Anchor (Old Town), Old Mill Tasty Shop (Douglas), and Monarch (Delano District). The Warren in Old Town is fantastic for a movie, Crown's Uptown Theatre is a classic dinner/theater spot, and Mort's is an intimate bar in Old Town.

And, it's true, Wichita is not going to blow you away, but it has charm. It's not a tourist destination so you can stay at the Ambassador downtown for pretty cheap. I highly recommend giving it a try.

A mid rise apartment complex at 4th and Ramsey is finally about finished. The owner was willing to repave Ramsey St. with concrete between the garage and apartments. But 4th St. is a different story. It's remains in pretty bad shape. Another new mid rise near Eskimo Joe's is still far from started.

South of the eating place, a vacant lot is for sale. Due to heavy appreciation of real estate in the area, I would speculate the asking price is well over $200,000.

Iron Monk Brewing Company, located downtown. There is a bar inside. It's been around for a few years. Its most popular beer is probably Stilly Wheat. Iron Monk means nothing other than what the two co-owners came up with when combining their two last names. In the 1960s, this building started out as Safeway grocery. Later AT&T had it.

On McElroy Ave, Stillwater got a new Golden Chick, formerly Taco Mayo. It looks much better than Taco Mayo did.

It looks like boomtown is coming back to northeast Stillwater on E. McElroy. Left over residential lots from the boom period of the 1960's and 1970's are finally being developed. That was when Stillwater grew in population from 23,965 to 38,268, largely thanks to successful efforts to attract manufacturing plants.

Really nice development at OSU and around Stillwater.

There's a pattern here: Beautiful or interesting architecture is on or near campus; Generic or cheap architecture is located off campus. Not that that's anything new, but it's pretty evident in these updates.

Work has restarted on the Ranch, a large upscale retirement village located on 55 acres on the north side of Stillwater near Lakeside golf course thanks to a change in ownership after the project went through foreclosure. Started in 2016, work halted in 2018 when it was 80% complete.
