Good to see progress at this location. Hoping the one at N. Rockwell is still on

They're going to absolutely kill it at that location! Can't wait for it to open!

Taco Casa has filed a building permit application for the location at NW 50th & May, just to the north of the building with the new Starbucks.

They should really consider a location along the I-240 corridor. I know I'd visit WAY more often if I didn't have to go all the way down to 19th street in Moore.

I have ate at Taco Casa, and while it is good, I would not go out of my way on a weekly basis to eat there. Would love to see more healthier versions of restaurants. It seems some people are really super excited about another fast food place opening up?

I mean, on the one hand, I get your point... but personally I see nothing wrong with being excited about a fast food place. Sometimes you have a craving for a specific flavor or flavor combination and when it's easier to satisfy that craving, that's a win in my book. Taco Casa reminds me of how good Taco Bell used to taste when I was a kid, which was one of my favorite places to eat growing up. I don't eat that kinda stuff nearly as much as I used to, but it'd still be nice to have one closer so that I don't have to go out of my way when that craving hits.

With any fast food you pretty much know what you are getting going in. And with the better fast food chains you usually get consistency.

From filing to completion/opening what is usually the timeline? 6 months or so?

More like a year.

And Taco Casa has previously filed plans then sat on them for a long time.

Noticed the Taco Casa on N Penn has broken ground and is coming along nicely.

I finally made it to Taco Casa in Moore based on the experiences on this thread. I went for the Taco Burger (mainly because that's not something that I see too often) and like a few others here, it took me back 40 years ago to Taco Tico, back when we would cruise Broadway in Edmond, or I would walk over from my job for lunch for that $1.79 Tico Dinner (ask for the green chili sauce). It was pretty good, on par with the Taco Tico that I remember but I also wasn't thrilled with being charged extra for cheese. It could be fun, but it could never be as fun as getting a Taco Burger at Tacoville !

I remember being so excited when we took a trip to Enid, I always wanted to go to Taco Tico! Don't remember the taco burger, though. Anyway, I am wondering if a Taco Casa will ever open in any of the locations discussed here... I am not driving to Moore for it when there are many Taco Bells and Del Tacos here. But I do want to try it!

Taco Casa is well under construction at Memorial and Penn; just filed for their building permit at 50th & May. Not sure of the Rockwell/Memorial location.

I don’t know what it is about Oklahoma and not being able to run chains as well as other states do, but the best widespread taco chain I’ve ever had is Del Taco. It beats out any taco chain I’ve seen in Oklahoma. Yet it wasn’t supported in Edmond. And the couple times that I went to that Del Taco it wasn’t all that great. I need to try Taco Casa tacos. I went to the one in Yukon, but I got a quesadilla.

Taco Mayo was my favorite taco chain (does this count as a chain?), but covid killed it. Most of them closed and the one I still know exits (Britton) has the dinning room closed for years (it may still be closed for all I know). I don't like soggy tacos (or getting tacos all over my car). I do like the Del Taco, though! I am partial to Taco Bell, though... spent a summer working there in college. The number if items they can make with the same 10 ingredients is amazing!

There are still one on south Western and Newcastle. They are my favorite also but not convenient. Would love a Taco Casa near I44 and SW 104th. Our only option is Taco Bell

Coming to north OKC from Norman I loved Taco Casa, Del Taco also became my replacement fast food taco favorite. The amount of cheese they would pile in to a taco was great, and it tasted fresh, but the last few times I've gone to the one on May it has been SO light on the cheese. It doesn't hit like it used to.

I’m not sure if you like burgers or not but believe it or not. Del taco has a really good cheeseburger.

What does this mean? Oklahoma is littered with successful chains and the state doesn't run any of them.

Personal chains that I enjoyed like Salata and Del Taco that failed due to poor management and they did fairly well other states. I know there’s a couple more that I’m missing out on. Another one was corner bakery. The one in Oklahoma City was good a couple times I went there, but they went downhill quick. The ones in Dallas are great. Oklahoma does have certain well run chains like Braum’s and at one point Sonic but I can’t stand sonic anymore.

PS, you should clearly understand what I meant by my post as well regarding chains being ran in the state. I wasn’t referring to the state of Oklahoma actually running these restaurants. What a dumb statement.

Del Taco is good, but it NOT better than Taco Casa. Since moving to Georgia/Florida, I've probably missed Taco Casa more than any other fast or fast casual restaurant that we don't have here. The Taco Lite might seriously be my favorite taco just about anywhere.

I still go to OU/texas every year but I fly into OKC and drive up to Dallas with some of my college friends and they ALWAYS make sure we hit up Taco Casa for lunch before we leave for Dallas because they know how much I love it and don't get to have it very often.

I’ll have to try taco Casa more often when I’m in town. I probably will once the one in Northwest OKC opens up. I wonder if they’re gonna build one in Edmond. If they do, I definitely will try them more often.

Regarding taco Bueno, is the one in Edmond still open? They are always a hit and miss. Sometimes they’re really good other times they are awful.

With franchises it really just comes down to having good ownership. If you have an experienced, well capitalized and active ownership group, you will have good managers. If you have good managers, you will have good staff. If you have good staff, you will have good stores. Unless the product or location is just bad it all comes down to the owner of the franchise.

Normally, this would be true. However, these days, it is extremely difficult to find good, reliable employees. It is almost impossible to keep a company fully staffed with decent employees, restaurant or otherwise. This doesn't matter how active/experienced the ownership and/or managers are.

A bit of history……. Back in the 70’s or 80’s when Del Taco first came to the OKC market, they sued the local “Del Taco” that had been operating in Del City near SE 15th and Sunnylane for decades for trademark infringement forcing the local Del Taco to become “Mid-Del Taco”. That wasn’t appreciated in the Del City area. Anyway Mid-Del Taco survived and is still in business.

As a kid growing up in Wichita - I’m a 6th generation central Oklahoman but my mom got a teaching job in the 316 and my folks moved there before I was born - I was extremely partial to Taco Tico. We also had another solid chain there called Taco Grande, though I have no idea regarding whether it still survives.

Anyway, when I moved to OKC in the mid eighties I was super happy to find Taco Tico, including the aforementioned one in Edmond but also one on May just south of Mayfair. Now that one is Sheesh Mahal. I was terribly bummed when it closed. The entire Tico chain folded but various attempts were made to revive it using the original recipes. I ate at one on a trip to Wichita maybe a decade ago; not sure if it still survives. It was a pretty close approximation but not precisely as I’d remembered it.

Taco Bell’s off-menu enchirito was a pretty close approximation of the Taco Tico enchilada, which was my favorite thing at Tico. Now I can’t even get THAT.

Back in the 70's, my dad worked for the local newspaper and worked until midnight on Saturdays, for the Sunday morning paper. My mom and I would always go to Taco Tico, because my dad couldn't eat that type of food, and I remember the taco burgers and the bean burritos. I remember one or both always being in a yellow wrapper. Great memories!

I've tried Del Taco several times and it's been awful, every time.

I read it as you wrote it.

But I guess you're saying there's something about Oklahoma that results in people here not being able to run a Del Taco, or other chains, in the way in which you're familiar, and I should have just known that somehow.

Cool.

So, reading your post was surreal for me. I am a 3rd generation Okie but in 1983 we moved to the Wichita area to take care of my Grandmother who wouldn't leave Kansas. I was in the 5th grade and I essentially grew up there and lived there off and on between my time at OU for college, until 2001 when I moved back to OKC. Grew up on both Taco Tico and Taco Pronto. I actually loved Pronto even more than Tico and would frequent the location in Derby until it closed in the 90's. Looks like there is still one last Pronto and one last Grande still open there. Taco Shop had rapidly expanded there when I last lived there in the late 90's and it was very good as well.

Part of why I love Taco Casa is because it reminds me so much of those places I grew up with.

Speaking of the Taco Bell Enchirito/Tico Enchilada... The Chilada at Taco Casa is the exact same thing, even down to the black olives. You NEED to go have one if you haven't.

Off topic, but I am dying to know Wichita people... what was the name of that "popular" burger joint (I know it was open in the late 80's early 90's, could still be open now). I heard commercials all the time back then on KEYN - the KJ103 of Wichita (back when I was sitting by the radio waiting to record a good song without the DJ talking through half of it). Thanks.

Sort of off-topic, but actually a PSA for people who might find themselves in Wichita and who like tacos. Taqueria El Fogon #2 has the best pastor I've ever had. Carved off the spit of meat, traditional style and served with pineapple, if you choose. Plus, they are located in an old Taco-Tico building!!

There is still at least one Taco Tico remaining in Oklahoma in Duncan.

Been a couple of years since I've been there but last time I was in Newton the Taco Tico there was still open.... I was born in Hutchinson and grew up on Taco Tico sanchos and taco burgers.

I'm not familiar with "trompo", although I just googled it. Is what you are referring to substantially different from El Pastor? It sounds like pastor is a trompo dish.

Where would you recommend we try this? We get up there a few times a year and I assume you are meaning Wichita.

Trumpo is the vertical rotisserie grill that you see used to make gyros/shawarma. It is a style of cooking brough by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico city. The Al Pastor style of taco originates from this cooking technique. You would have layers of marinated pork and onions cooked slowly and shaved off the spit. Traditionally a carved pineapple is put on top and small amounts of pineapple are served with each Taco. Taqueria Cardenas, Trumpudos, and El Chilango also have Trumpo al pastor.

Probably Spangles. I remember in the 80's they did a contest to name the restaurant and that was the name they picked. Expanded with more locations in the late 90's. Pretty good place.

EDIT: Terrible commercials. For some reason they picked the one person to do the commercials that had a lisp. Poor lisp lady had to "Spangles." lol
