While he was a very controversial figure in his early years, he became an inspiration to our country as he aged. He will be missed.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

Mohammad Ali (formerly Cassius Clay) turned the sport of boxing around. He & Howard Cosell (ABC) created a platform that became a springboard for boxing that began in the early 60s.
