View Full Version : New license plates on the way
stile99 08-22-2016, 03:02 PM I think it is a marketing ploy to encourage purchasing a vanity/custom plate.
Or a license plate holder with a 'bump' at the bottom covering the travelok.com.
At least they backed down on the front plate nonsense.
Bullbear 08-22-2016, 03:05 PM I love the idea of a scissortail. I mean I have one tattooed on my arm in my OK theme sleeve and love it. but do they not have access to a better graphic artist? it could have been much nicer and clearer.
I think it actually looks pretty decent.
KayneMo 08-22-2016, 03:17 PM Meh, it could've been executed better. I much prefer the current plate.
SoonerDave 08-22-2016, 03:23 PM I think the thing is butt ugly. It looks like a truck hit the Twitter bird and they wrote the epitaph in some block-level refugee font from about 1980. The prior version at least had some style and grace to it. This one? Looks like it was pulled from the back of a box of Cap'n Crunch. Ugh
MagzOK 08-22-2016, 03:27 PM I would like for the plates to go back to being old school white plate with green lettering and "Oklahoma is OK" in small font on the bottom.
bradh 08-22-2016, 03:33 PM I like it, and you'd have to be a moron to not make out that's a bird
David 08-22-2016, 03:49 PM Schrödinger's license plate, simultaneously doesn't look like a bird and looks like the twitter logo.
:p
d-usa 08-22-2016, 03:56 PM Well, looks like our legislature managed to pass a "it's not a tax, so we didn't raise taxes" mandatory fee for everyone while at the same time taking care of the "why is there another religion besides Jesus/why is there a native american on my plate" crowd.
It might have a different state symbol on it, but this plate will always be a symbol of our misguided and useless legislature to me. It could be the best looking plate I have ever seen, but it will still symbolize those idiots in the capitol.
cinnamonjock 08-22-2016, 04:07 PM I like it much more than the current ones. At least this one has a little more artistic interpretation than just a picture of a statue stuck on the side. I was really hoping for a revamp of the "Oklahoma is OK" theme though
Bunty 08-22-2016, 04:51 PM Thought for a second that Twitter was moving to Oklahoma.
12908
Not me. I instantly thought the scissor tailed flycatcher. So I'm glad I don't use Twitter much.
Bunty 08-22-2016, 04:52 PM Since the state is making us promote travel in Oklahoma with a small billboard on the backs of our cars, they shouldn't raise the price of the tags.
Bellaboo 08-22-2016, 04:53 PM I would like for the plates to go back to being old school white plate with green lettering and "Oklahoma is OK" in small font on the bottom.
Old school is black and white in rotation with Texas every other year. The green letters came way late to the picture.
Anonymous. 08-22-2016, 04:57 PM I prefer the current ones over that. I feel like the current ones are very modern and clean relative to most state's plates.
turnpup 08-22-2016, 05:17 PM Is it common in other states to have advertising for the state's website/travel info on license plates? I don't recollect having seen that before.
Plutonic Panda 08-22-2016, 05:26 PM Is it common in other states to have advertising for the state's website/travel info on license plates? I don't recollect having seen that before.
Florida has it. California has California.gov. I seem to recall several other states having it now as well. I think it is a new trend.
turnpup 08-22-2016, 05:28 PM Ah, OK. Thanks, Plupan!
bradh 08-22-2016, 05:45 PM Shoulda put a hashtag on there, although with the internet snark mob it woulda backfired

That bird is not dope...
Gonna agree with Urbanized...it's either Original Flag '46, since I'm into retro or Don't Tread On Me...
Feel free to peruze the plates. There's a lot more better than that bird...
rezman 08-22-2016, 06:33 PM What's amazing is that any one of those vanity plates on the list looks 100% better than this new mandatory standard replacement. And no, I don't care to carry advertisement for their website either.
I just tagged up for the year about a week ago, but that original Okla 46 is starting to look pretty good.
Dustin 08-22-2016, 07:48 PM The one we have now it's at least designed semi-well... This new one, the more I look at it, looks very cheap.

Agreed. The Okla 46 is actually kind of cool. I will probably end up with it.

Starting to realize that was the idea. Ugly base tag...upgrade to one that doesn't induce wretching.
I hardly ever look at my own tag so eh why should I care if it looks like a retro Johnathon Livingston Seagull lunch box.
Celebrator 08-22-2016, 11:35 PM I have not seen the OK 46 state flag plate on the road at all, but that is a GREAT design. I guess we'll be able to i.d. OKCTalkers pretty easily now, given the comments above! I could go with the Route 66 one easily too, very clean look--but it is comparatively expensive to renew! We have A LOT of options, which is nice. I actually like the new design pretty well, but I think the current plate has a bit more sophisticated look and therefore makes a better impression. The background of the new plate is a bit busy for my taste.
Bunty 08-23-2016, 12:10 AM I think the thing is butt ugly. It looks like a truck hit the Twitter bird and they wrote the epitaph in some block-level refugee font from about 1980. You might say the state gave the people the bird.
Scott5114 08-23-2016, 01:59 AM Random semi-pertinent question—would anyone happen to have a list of the county codes used in the upper-right corner of the plate? Some are obvious (OK = Oklahoma, CL = Cleveland) but others are a little more obscure (ML = McClain County, guess MC went to McCurtain). Googling doesn't turn up anything useful (mostly county codes for the old green/white Native America plate).
rezman 08-23-2016, 05:37 AM You might say the state gave the people the bird.
:D Where's the like button?
LocoAko 08-23-2016, 07:36 AM This Wildlife Conservation plate is a much better execution of what this could have been, IMO.

Roger S 08-23-2016, 08:00 AM I sure hope they never let the domain name lapse and some porn site pays to register it before they realize what has happened.
stile99 08-23-2016, 08:48 AM While I understand completely the feeling that this was designed purposely to drive people to purchasing vanity/specialty plates, I disagree. I don't think it was designed at all. The purpose was to start getting that $5 fee ASAP, there was no time to go through a submission phase, selection phase, and voting phase. I would bet good money that during the design process the words "We don't care, just slap something together" or something similar were uttered.

And cheaply...I read somewhere that they paid some local firm $1350. to do it.
Urbanized 08-23-2016, 10:16 AM I sure hope they never let the domain name lapse and some porn site pays to register it before they realize what has happened.
Since travelok.com has been a cornerstone of Tourism's (considerable) marketing efforts for a couple of decades now, I'd say it's pretty unlikely to happen.

where did you read that? can you provide a link?
QUAPAW5 08-23-2016, 10:53 AM The design of the New License plate reflects the character of the Elected Governor ..... Birdbrain ... At least Alaska is Creative ,they have a grizzly standing on 2 feet on there plate
Bullbear 08-23-2016, 11:04 AM This kind of made me giggle.

Guess that's one way to stop it. Get the photographer to make a copyright claim? I can't imagine this falls under fair use.
bradh 08-23-2016, 12:38 PM I still can't believe we're wasting time on this. I think some people just want to bitch. I've seen MUCH worse design.
^That's really all this board does anymore is complain about things. The design is fine.
TU 'cane 08-23-2016, 01:06 PM I still can't believe we're wasting time on this. I think some people just want to bitch. I've seen MUCH worse design.

The design could have been way worse or way out from left field. I think this design is a major improvement over our current one and still has an Oklahoma theme.
While everyone is entitled to their own opinions, reading some of the comments here and elsewhere... It seems to me some people hate it and are tying it to Fallin and Republicans, making it political and thus saying how trashy, boring, tacky, ugly, etc. it is.
I just wanted a license plate that I thought would be an improvement from our current one and think this one is. I sincerely would not have cared which party was living in the mansion, this goes beyond that.
And to the people saying they won't support the travelok site advertised, you do realize that by saying that, you're not helping promote and advertise out of state dollars to be spent within our borders? That's money that can help fund all of those precious things some of you want.
I swear, sometimes some Oklahomans are the most self-depressing, self hating bags of air to ever grace this planet. Moan and groan and complain.
Come January I'm going to enjoy taking that turd off my car and placing this snazzy plate on. And on top of that, just to spite some of the Scrooges, I'm going to go to the travelok site and pick my next Saturday destination!
:p :Smiley122

Not a single person has said that, or even anything remotely close to it. I think the closest you will find, and even this is a REALLY long stretch, is me saying some license plate holders have a 'bump' at the bottom that will cover it up and someone else saying they hope the domain doesn't lapse and get snapped up by something unsavory.
It's funny...the last handful of posts have been people complaining about complaining...and some of that complaining doesn't even exist. I would say if you object to complaints, don't look so hard for something to complain about that if you don't find anything, you just make something up.
And yeah. This site is definitely the only one complaining about the license plate design. Riiiiiiiiiight. Is this site the only site you visit, because it's the only one on which I've seen any POSITIVE comments regarding the plate. Christ on a cracker, someone at KFOR tweeted about it being "fuggin' ugly" on their official Twitter account.
SoonerDave 08-23-2016, 01:24 PM I think a lot of *general* frustration is being exhausted on this plate. Lots of folks who know we've got a slew of difficult problems, see something like this, and weigh the two - and say "we've got ALL these problems, and the best thing we can do is put up a new $5 license plate?" The arbitrary heaping of fiery coals on Fallin and/or the Legislature serves an emotional purpose, but not a very practical one - as if to suggest a different makeup of either would somehow have stopped oil from collapsing worldwide. But I digress.
No, I don't like the design at all, still don't, and if that makes me a Scrooge, oh, well, so be it. It's just so, well, soulless. But a fraction greater thought into why there's so much exasperation being vented on something like this would explain a great deal. In any other year, you'd have had at best passing notice, a "meh" reaction, and the next outrage du jour would certainly have taken its place.
But even then, I still wouldn't like that Blue Plate (Not) Special. :)
Bill Robertson 08-23-2016, 01:28 PM They're OK. Though it doesn't matter to me. We have vanity plates on all of our cars.
Roger S 08-23-2016, 01:28 PM ...and someone else saying they hope the domain doesn't lapse and get snapped up by something unsavory.
That was a joke... not a complaint because it would be freaking hilarious if it happened.
stile99 08-23-2016, 01:33 PM That was a joke... not a complaint because it would be freaking hilarious if it happened.
I totally picked up that it was a joke (and I thought it was funny, because it has indeed happened that a domain/800 number lapsed and was snapped up seconds later by the porn industry). Like I said, it's an insanely long stretch from that to "I refuse to support the site". A stretch I doubt a reasonable person could make, quite frankly, so I'm a bit confused as to from where the accusation is coming.

Seeing how you only quoted part of my comment, you may have missed the part where I said "here and elsewhere." And evidently you missed other portions...
Regardless, look at the time you took to argue and be contrarian because someone (me) said there seems to be unnecessary (or at least forced as a venue to vent towards the State) negativity towards a license plate.
Seems like at some point too many conversations reach a point like this. And this is when I take my leave of the thread. Have a good one all. Remember, it's just a license plate and don't forget to write your legislators! And be sure to read the entire post before starting an argument!

Even Google lost their domain name for a few minutes because of a software mishap. They gave the guy who bought it a few thousand dollars.
I personally just think TravelOK is redundant. The Oklahoma license plate itself is advertisement and Travel OK would be the first website that pops up if you searched Oklahoma tourism.
reverend 08-23-2016, 02:38 PM Ugly plate, nothing special about it. We will go from one of the most unique looking plates to one of the most bland. Also, the font for the "Explore Oklahoma" looks like it was taken from a Star Trek starship hull.
stile99 08-23-2016, 02:39 PM And this is when I take my leave of the thread.
Now that the negativity is out of the way, the members of okctalk.com (a public forum dedicated to freely discussing issues that affect Oklahoma in general and Oklahoma City in particular) can get on with freely discussing issues that affect Oklahoma in general and Oklahoma City in particular.
I honestly just simply can't understand why people who object to open discussion come to forums dedicated to open discussion. But I suppose I never will. Back to the discussion, folks.
OkieHornet 08-23-2016, 02:46 PM i would like to see more constructive criticism, even a design, from those who aren't in favor of the new license plate.
i realize it's probably too late to do anything about it now, but instead of negativity, how about offering up a solution instead?
maybe if enough people make some noise to the right people, something could change. probably not, but you never know.
Questor 08-23-2016, 02:48 PM My first thought was that this was a nod to the super conservative wing of Fallin's supporters who have absolutely dispized the Native American themes of our current tag, going so far as to sue over it. Gone is all Indian imagery and even our "Native America" motto.
The second thing that crossed my mind was how hypocritical our government can be; for a state that claims we haven't raised taxes in forever we sure are getting soaked in nonsense "service fees" these days. I simply cannot buy the public safety arguments I have heard a few government folks make about the need for a new tag. Could have reissued the same tag with new reflective coatings.
jerrywall 08-23-2016, 02:50 PM I like the design. Simple and clean. But it's funny how trends evolve when it comes to design. Sometimes 3d and textured, sometimes realistic, sometimes flat.
I figure if you don't like it, just like Oklahoma weather, don't worry, it'll change.
jerrywall 08-23-2016, 04:02 PM Although, considering the imagery of this...

RadicalModerate 08-23-2016, 08:21 PM Re: BullBear (@Post #95^) THAT is a Classic Observation/Bit of informal Detective Work. I'd love to plagiarize it to a different venue to make a point. =~) As soon as I saw the New! Improved!! "design" I thought to myself . . . "This smells fishy . . . A guy bought google.com, on Google's own domain registration site. If it can happen to Google I am sure it can happen to Oklahoma.

The real issue here is that this is a classic case of a solution in search of a problem. THe "alternative" was to just reissue the existing plates with whatever Magical Protective Super Sparkle Potion 3M decided was necessary to sustain their kickback fund (sorry, intense sarcasm and cyncism waves just intersected).
bradh 08-23-2016, 11:12 PM While we're on this discussion, why if I want a vanity plate do I need to buy a regular plate and keep it in my car?

That's because it's the same font, Eurostile. It doesn't mesh very well with the rest of the design. If they would have kept the stylized Oklahoma text from the current plate I think it would look a lot nicer.
Bellaboo 08-24-2016, 07:36 AM While we're on this discussion, why if I want a vanity plate do I need to buy a regular plate and keep it in my car?
Money, some vanity plates are only $15. They want the full registration fees. Also, if you decide not to renew your vanity plate, it can go on the front of the car at no charge and your regular plate goes to the rear.
baralheia 08-24-2016, 01:49 PM Ugly plate, nothing special about it. We will go from one of the most unique looking plates to one of the most bland. Also, the font for the "Explore Oklahoma" looks like it was taken from a Star Trek starship hull.
For reference, here's a (mostly) up to date website showing the designs of all 50 states' license plates: http://www.15q.net/curr.html
While I don't like our new plate at all, I wouldn't say that we're among the most bland license plates with the new design. I mean, we'd have some pretty stiff competition in that regard from states like California, Alaska, Connecticut, Michigan, New York... Both the old and the new plates are more visually interesting than theirs. And have you seen Texas' "Classic" plate, introduced in 2012? I mean, just feast your eyes on this tall drink of B-L-A-N-D....
