View Full Version : Revolucion
Rachel Cope and the 84 Hospitality group is planning a summer opening for Revolucion, a Mexcian themed restaurant and bar at Classen and NW 6th.
http://www.okctalk.com/images/pete/revolucion1.jpg
The group also recently announced Goro Ramen + Izakaya (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Goro) for the Plaza District.
Cope calls their approach “social dining”, with all concepts combining a twist on more traditional food combined with a lively bar scene where patrons are encouraged to hang out and socialize. The formula has been wildly successful at 84's first venture, Empire Slice House (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Empire+Slice+House).
Revolucion with be a “revolution against Tex-Mex” and feature fresh takes on simple tacos and other items typically found in taquerias, combined with unique margaritas and a full bar.
Featured prominently will be a large patio and in the interior space will open to it through a NanaWall folding door system that will allow the two areas to flow together.
The menu will feature tacos, tortas and a large variety of appetizers served at lunch, dinner and late night with special menus for Saturday and Sunday brunch.

The large bar will be located near the moving doors to further bridge the indoor and outdoor.
Revolucion will join the soon-to-open Sunnyside Diner (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Sunnyside+Diner)in the 916 NW 6th Street project (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=916+NW+6th). The development is a renovation of an old tire shop and the exterior is largely complete, including crushed granite parking areas.

The large patio structure will be added to the west and be certain to bring life to lower Classen Boulevard, which is seeing a sudden resurgence along with west Downtown. Projects in the area include the 21c Museum Hotel (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=21c+Museum+Hotel), the Residences at 21c (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Residences+at+21c), the Jones Assembly (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Jones+Assembly), Sunshine Cleaners (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Sunshine+Cleaners) and the recently opened FlashBack RetroPub (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=FlashBack+RetroPub).

How awesome will this be??
Especially since it is literally two blocks from my place. :)
CP405 02-13-2016, 01:41 PM That means you're buying all of us on here a round of tacos when they open, right?
But seriously, this is really, really cool. I don't doubt it will be a smash hit. Interesting that East Bricktown and West Downtown are really surging now.
twade 02-13-2016, 02:19 PM Very excited! Really interested to compare the vibe here with the new concept going in at the old tire shop near Bleu Garten.
Spartan 02-13-2016, 03:57 PM This looks killer.
soonerguru 02-13-2016, 04:07 PM What a great concept.
sooner88 02-13-2016, 06:29 PM That looks awesome. I love how patios have been such a big emphasis on almost every new restaurant that's opened in the past 2 years.
Bullbear 02-15-2016, 08:59 AM Love it.. Since taking iguana out of my rotation I have really needed more Mexican places with bar. Now it seems there are several opening in the area which I am totally down for!. can't wait to see this open.
Yes, now three proposed Mexican-themed restaurants with large patios:
- Revolucion
- Barrios in the Swanson's Tire development
- Frida in the Via Paseo development
This has been a hole in the OKC dining scene for a while, and three great restaurant groups have all realized it at the same time.
Bullbear 02-15-2016, 11:49 AM Isn't Cultivar Mexican as well?
Isn't Cultivar Mexican as well?
Yes! And will ultimately have a rooftop deck.
Bullbear 02-15-2016, 01:06 PM I wasn't thinking about Freda so even better.. excited to have so many new options for Mexican in the area!

Doesn't Cope operate Iguana now too?
Doesn't Cope operate Iguana now too?
No.
Rachel did a consulting job at Iguana that ended last summer.
Harbinger 08-04-2016, 04:57 PM Any update on this? I haven't heard of any news on this for awhile.
Yes, was in there just last week.
They are moving along in construction. Still to go in is the glass folding wall on the west side and a revised patio plan.
It's super cool space and will have a large square bar more or less in the middle, but with those open doors, the indoors and outdoors should be pretty unified and create a cool setting.
I would guess they are about 6-8 weeks from opening.
A look at their new patio and signage:

Actually love that name now
Going to a soft opening on Tuesday and will report back.
Teo9969 10-28-2016, 10:44 AM If we all start just calling it Neon Cactus, most of our friends won't know the difference and we'll change the name in every day conversation.

Moving back to OKC really made the perks of running OKCTalk a lot better... ;)
Thomas Vu 10-28-2016, 05:53 PM Drove by the building today. Does it share any thing in common with the sunnyside diner (owners and such?)

No, Revolucion is Rachel Cope (Empire, Goro) and Sunnyside is Shannon Roper (Hillbillies, S&B Burger).

jbkrems 10-31-2016, 09:04 PM Has anyone seen a menu for this place?
zefferoni 11-02-2016, 07:55 AM There's a menu up on their web site (http://www.revolucionokc.com/menu/), but I don't know if it's their full menu.
Roger S 11-02-2016, 08:03 AM Hmmmm..... When I saw chicharonnes on their appetizer menu I was hoping to see chicharonnes as a taco option also.... Maybe it will be a special.
Went last night to the first of two soft opening nights... They officially open on Thursday and will run 11A to at least midnight and be closed on Mondays, at least initially.
First and foremost, it's a really fun and energetic vibe. Rachel Cope describes her approach (with Empire and Goro as well) as "social dining" and I think that's a perfect description and has worked really well at the first two places.
Both inside and out the music is loud and the staff is high energy and friendly. I predict this will become very popular for late night, as the kitchen will stay open late as well.
The link to the menu posted above is what I believe will be the official list of offerings. Super simple with a handful of appetizers then various taco options with "family style" sides.
Our group all tried different cocktails and the standout was La Revolución (El Jimador blanco, House Michelada mix, Dos Equis lager) which was like a very interesting bloody mary. The drink in the photo below is the Cannonball, which was a swirl of margarita and sangria.
They bring out popcorn with grated cheese and spices that was absolutely devoured by the group.
We started with the queso fundido and it was really good, especially the spicy red peppers on top. Some picked them off but I gobbled them up! Also had the chicharrones which I particularly liked.
Then we all had a couple of tacos and then shared sides of quacamole, beans and elotes (corn). All were very good with their own unique take.
The photo of my two tacos were the pork carnitas (left) and chicken; really liked both but for me the standout was the pork, especially when drizzled with their house habanero hot sauce. Loved that stuff but they also had mild red and green sauce... All 3 were in bottles.
The whole place is a great compliment and contrast to Barrios; good in it's own fun, casual, party way. On nice days when they open the accordion doors to the big patio (last photo), the inside bar will almost seem outside and make the entire space feel quite different.

Roger S 11-02-2016, 08:41 AM Ooooh... Love that popcorn idea... Been eating mine with shredded cheddar and various spices since I was a kid... That's right up my alley!
Bullbear 11-02-2016, 09:07 AM I love the sound of all that!. sounds like a fun place to hang out with friends for sure.
Bits_Of_Real_Panther 11-03-2016, 02:04 AM cultivar makes their own tortillas, do either of barrios or this place as well?
sooner88 11-03-2016, 08:19 AM cultivar makes their own tortillas, do either of barrios or this place as well?
Barrios menu says handmade tortillas.
Urbanized 11-03-2016, 09:10 AM Tried it out yesterday and really enjoyed items like the queso fundito, the lingua taco, and the elote. I also had the beans (very good) and the pork carnitas taco (pretty standard; I have had better and I have had worse). I was concerned about some duplication with Barrios and Revolucion opening so close to one another - especially considering the already-dense Mexican food scene in the central city - but these two places couldn't be more different.
Revolucion is definitely more of a party atmosphere, revolves around the bar, noisy (for better AND worse), and skews MUCH younger. I think this is bridging the gap between Plaza and the Fassler/Bleu Garten segment of the Midtown crowd. It is a bit like an indoor version of a food truck, and by that I am not meaning interior/decor but instead referring to the casual nature and the crowd. It's going to be a fun place. I personally can see mostly lunches there for me, and maybe some late night drunken tacos. :)

Bullbear 11-07-2016, 10:33 AM Went yesterday and really liked this place. very casual and fun. love the late night kitchen hours. I think this will be a great spot and in or regular rotation. Price points are fair and the popcorn is great!. we had the Queso fundido and that was fantastic! tacos we had were El Pastor and Asada and they were both great and a good size. two of us having the queso and a couple of tacos and we were more than full.
shawnw 11-07-2016, 11:03 AM Also went Sunday. Was fantastic.
Okcdiner 12-23-2016, 07:02 PM I've been in several times and really enjoy this place. It's very much a bar that serves food, but the food that it serves is done very well, and is consistent every time. The queso fundido is awesome, and I really love the elotes.
shadfar 12-24-2016, 12:23 PM Finally got a chance to try this place out last night. Nice vibe and food was great. i didn't get to try the "popcorn" i hear everyone talking about. maybe next time.
Bullbear 12-27-2016, 11:08 AM I've gotten to where we are here about once a week. love all the food and the house margarita is very good!
BBatesokc 12-31-2016, 05:17 PM Gone there for lunch now a few times. I definitely didn't get the 'bar' feel at lunchtime, but I could see where someone might think that at night.
It's a simple buildout that is open, airy and clean feeling.
I'm always in for the chicken and the tongue street tacos. Excellent in flavor, seasoning and presentation every time.
In particular appreciate that the tongue is more shredded than some other places - so, it's not as off-putting to those who would otherwise not order tongue. It's the only place I could even get those with me to try tongue.
Queso Fundido is really good, but it's been fairly inconsistent each time we go. I like it a bit more well done and have only received it that way on one occasion.
The churros are really good too and come with plenty of chocolate.
The popcorn was actually my least favorite. It wasn't offered on one of my three visits, but when it was, it was always tiny kernels - like crumbs. I'm also not a big fan of room temperature popcorn. It has some bite to it, but just not my thing. Also not big into something on the table we are all dipping our hands into.
edcrunk 01-21-2017, 09:37 AM This is my new favorite spot! Me and my lovely wife love this place.
jbrown84 01-21-2017, 04:14 PM Ate here on New Years Eve for dinner. House margarita was tasty and strong. The popcorn was a fun, unique complimentary appetizer for a Mexican joint. And most importantly, BEST TACOS IN OKC. Oh, so delicious!
Atmosphere was a bit lacking, though I did love the neon cactus out front. Barrios blows this out of the water for design and decor.
jackirons 01-25-2017, 10:42 PM what places have you been to for tacos in okc?
soonerguru 02-02-2017, 04:12 PM Went there Friday night again. The place was hopping. I'm not crazy about everything, i.e. their guac, which is absurdly overseasoned, or the queso fundido, which I find too rich. But the tacos are very good as are some of the appetizers like the flautas. Prices are reasonable for drinks and food. It seems to really be catching on as it was SRO the whole time we were there.
bucktalk 02-04-2017, 07:16 PM Made my first time visit here tonight (Saturday) around 5:30. Small crowd -fairly calm atmosphere for that time of day, therefore the noise level as pleasant. Review: the service was very, very good. Very engaging staff when I asked about various food offerings. The food: excellent! Had a couple of appetizers and then tacos. My rating: atmosphere: 8:5 / service: 8 / food: 8.5 Yes! I'll return there as well as introduce it to multiple friends.
There is a fairly strong presences of mexican food near downtown now. I'm wondering how Iguana will do once they reopen.
