There has been lots of discussion about authentic street tacos but what about the crispy variety?

I liked the Fuzzy's version but they didn't knock my socks off.

Would love to find some delicious alternatives.

May not be your cup of tea, but I am partial to Taco Cabana's crispy beef tacos. They are slightly greasy, however, and many may not enjoy this But it is very flavorful. There seems to be only one location left in the metro, which is slightly depressing. I-40 and McArthur is the last location. They still seem to be thriving well all over Texas. Even though it's fast food, I find myself enjoying TC more than most of our sit-down Tex-Mex joints.

Thanks for the tip on Tacoville! I worked in one of the worst areas of L.A. for several years so no neighborhood in OKC is going to scare me off. :)

I know Torchy's is coming to town and that sounds like it will be another great option.

Not exactly traditional, but the tacos at The Pump are ridiculously good.

Tacoville, is more of a convenient store turned taco joint... The meat and the sauce are addicting... It's another place I've been eating for over 30 years.. The sanchos and burritos are huge and surprisingly enough they have one of the best coney dogs around also. On any given day you may be surrounded by lawyers and judges or bikers and mechanics. The women that serve everything up are an institution themselves, most have been there as long as I've been going.

I don't go to Ted's often, and tend to get soft tacos vs. crispy most places.... but Ted's crispy tacos with shredded beef are excellent.

If you're not quick. The shell turns to liquid from the juice of the beef....They are good, but ya gotta be quick.

Mid Del Taco is pretty decent{not great}but Tacoville is probably a notch better. There is also a place on S Western, Tony Tacos that is pretty good.

Geez, I haven't been to Tacoville in probably 15 years, even though I literally work one mile away. Are they cash only or do they take debit cards? I need to get down there for lunch some day.

It's still cash only, but they did at least install an ATM inside the place......

Tacoville is legit. So is los taco, which is nearly identical. They're both saltine crackers. If I'm going south side it's tacos San Pedro's, that's the real deal. I'm praying for a full fledged torchy's in OKC. But the Pump's tacos, while unconventional, and of the pinned variety, are crazy good.

TSP is the reason I haven't been to Tacoville in over 15 years!!! When the owner sees me in the restaurant, she often has the cooks send me out a little extra item...on the house. :) It's a tortilla with some kind of special cheese melted inside with green pepper....it's delicious!!!

Have you tried the little taco truck at SW 44th & May? It's just as good as TSP and even more consistent in quality.

The shell is more like the frybread used in Indian tacos, folded into a pocket shape. Sort of a flaky pastry type consistency.

I agree it's good , but Tacoville for me is a institution, the sauce could make concrete edible and the meat recipe is somewhat fast food style ,but extremely flavorful and became something I crave... 95% of the menu involves the meat in some fashion or another. I almost forgot about taco burgers...... How longs it been since you had a taco burger,lol..

TSP has a pretty good size menu and selection of different items, it's a 2 times a month stop for me.

No, deep-fried crispy/flaky. I know not all Indian tacos are that way though.

When was the last time you did taco Bueno? If I'm in a tight spot 3 crispy tacos from the drive through and a couple pots of their in-house made salsa and it's makes an acceptable fast food meal. Don't do the Bueno on 23rd st though. You could easily fill in the blank with "The ______ on 23rd street is the worst ______ in town."

I'll admit to being a sucker for Bueno. Had some last week. And totally agree about pretty much every fast food joint in 23rd. They're all pretty terrible compared to their own corporate standard.

Taco Rico over on Lincoln , ain't bad for a quick bite.... The owner worked for Bueno for a long time and his wife worked for another taco joint can't remember which one, before they opened their own place, pretty good stuff as well.

Doesn't make sense how taco bell thrived and Taco Tico didn't in OKC.

Speaking of Taco Ville. I just has the Tacos and Sanchos from there yesterday. Had to get a large to go order because the Tacos with the hot sauce is very addicting .

I also love their Huevos Mexicali (probably got that wrong but basically "Mexican style eggs"). Eggs scrambled with tomatoes, onions and jalapenos served with beans, rice, corn tortillas and relish. It's a HUGE dish and quite tasty!

My other favorites at TSP are a chicken burrito and marinated pork torta (incredible!!!).

Also, I don't think I've had a bad fast food crispy taco and Beuno's "hot sauce" (their name...it's not that hot) is a favorite of mine.

Me eating there for the first time is what caused me to start this thread.

I liked them too, but really only because I put on lots of their hot sauce, which is truly hot. Otherwise, I found the tacos to be pretty flavorless. Still, I would order them again.

And speaking of greasy, I would expect a good cripsy taco to have some grease. Grease gets a bad wrap... Sometimes it's a very important part of a dish and if you take it completely out -- like in a burger -- you lose too much about what makes it taste so darn good.

Everything in moderation is fine. I'd rather have a couple of good greasy tacos than a dozen dry, bland ones.

ted's has a pretty decent crispy chicken taco... the pulled chicken in it is pretty flavorful. haven't been in a few years, but los tacos on sw 89th & penn had pretty good american style tacos. they're a cash only establishment. you know it's an american style joint when their flour tortillas are bright yellow.

i think i saw taco rico (ne 36th & lincoln) mentioned upthread. i think their american style tacos are so-so but their tacos de asada are pretty tasty. -M

I'll have to try that next time we go to Ted's. Sadly, I find almost all restaurant's crispy chicken tacos to be severely lacking and the best I've ever had were Taco Buenos Chicken Party Tacos. They were 39 cents each and AMAZING. They stopped selling chicken tacos years ago.
