Being new to the state ( :cool: ) I am having a hard time navigating the arcane liquor laws.

Can liquor stores not also sell mixers? And grocery stores can sell mixers but not alcohol other than low-point beer?

I went into Byron's for the first time yesterday and they did actually have some mixers (not sure how or why) but not a good selection.

Can anyone recommend a place that carries a good assortment, as in more than what you see at your basic grocery store?


For all the talk about getting an Ikea or other retail, I think it won't be long before I'm going to be dying for a Bevmo or Wine and More, both awesome liquor/beer/wine/mixer superstores that I grew to love in California.

So the limited mixers that you see in grocery stores actually have a 1% alcohol content. This can be sold in our liqueur stores

Don't you mean that the mixers sold in LIQUOR stores have some alcohol in them? That's how they can get around the "no mixers" law.

Pete, the easiest place to get regular, non-alcoholic mixers is the grocery store, unfortunately. If you're looking for more specilized stuff, like bitters, etc., I'd suggest a to-the-trade place like: Parks Distributing Company: Your Bar Supply Specialists! (http://parksdistributing.com/) .

I don't think a liquor store can even sell cork screws. If it doesn't contain alcohol they don't sell it. See below.

XXVIII-4. Retail sales by package stores and by the individual drink
Except as hereinafter provided, retail sales of alcoholic beverages shall be limited to the
original sealed package, by privately owned and operated package stores, in cities and towns
having a population in excess of two hundred (200) persons or by wineries; provided that
wineries shall be able to sell only wine which has been produced on the winery premises.
No goods, wares, or merchandise shall be sold and no services shall be rendered on the same
premises on which retail package alcoholic beverages are sold. Said premises are herein
defined to be the entire space in which retail package alcoholic beverages are sold or
displayed and said premises must be separated from any premises on which any other goods,
wares, or merchandise are sold or services rendered by walls which may only be broken by a
passageway to which the public is not admitted. Not more than one retail package license
shall be issued to any person or general or limited partnership.
Retail sale of alcoholic beverages by the individual drink for on-premises consumption is
hereby authorized within a county if the voters of such county have previously approved such
retail sale at an election.

I double checked my mixers and they do say 1% alcohol.

What a ridiculous work-around... The two I bought were margarita mix and a strawberry puree which they had to ad wine to in order to meet the absurd laws.

OK alcohol laws, with the various, bumps, twists and turns, make our interstate look smooth, even and simple to travel. by comparison.

Anyone know of a good and inexpensive place to pick up tonic water that does not have HFCS or artificial sweetners other then Whole Foods, Sprouts or Natural foods. The 365 brand cans shot out a stream at least 6' when I open one. I bought 2 six packs and have to clean my clean kitchen as well as my truck. Sprouts doesn't real have any and I'm buying some at Natural foods at $6.99 for a 4 pack. I'm not using them for mixers. I'm drinking them for a health issue. I've tried Walmart and Uptown and they have the usual mass market brands that have the HFCS or artificial sweeteners.

Bruams orange juice and Ketel One. Good mix.

They didn't have a ton of mixers but they did have the exact two things I was looking for, so very happy. The woman there was very nice and helpful.

(BTW, I like to use strawberry, watermelon and mango puree from First Call in my margarita machine. I am having people over this weekend and wanted to offer them an assortment of flavors, so now I can.)

Also, they are right off S. 25th & I-35, so super easy to get off the freeway, get what you need, then hop right back on the on-ramp going north.
