The national weather service in norman has issued an ice storm
warning...which is in effect from 6 pm this evening to noon cst
saturday. The winter weather advisory is now in effect until 6 pm
cst this evening.
* main impact: Ice accumulation of one-quarter inch or more are
likely in much of the warning area. Icing will create slick and
hazardous roadways... And ice accumulation on trees and power
lines can create power outages.
* other impacts: Brisk north winds will create wind chill values
in the upper teens and 20s.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Be sure you can take care of yourself and your family if you lose
electrical power. Watch out for falling trees...limbs and power
lines.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 03:18 PM Ice Storm Warning upgrade has been placed in the eastern counties that were previously under WX advisory. This includes all of OKC.
SomeGuy 11-27-2015, 03:25 PM Planning on going to Bedlam game tomorrow, how should roads be in the morning?
Just this minute (3:50PM on Friday) started to get ice pellets here downtown.
Had been raining and suddenly changed over to icy precip.
With temps continuing to drop (about 31 here now) things could get slick tonight.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 04:25 PM Power outages is main concern as there is still substantial foilage on the trees. Rural areas will be impacted the most where utility line maintenance is poorer.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 04:47 PM Latest model runs show up to half an inch of additinal ice over most of the OKC area overnight.

well. . carp . . . .:(
I just took my trash out and my back deck and steps were solid ice.
In fact, the sliding door on the dumpster was frozen shut. This is likely to get pretty ugly overnight in OKC.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 05:15 PM Latest HRRR shows up to an additional inch of ice along I-44 including OKC. Looks like heavy banding setting up all the way back into western TX that will move over C OK overnight when we will have zero UV radiation to aid in the melting process.
Trees and powerlines will be tested in the metro if this pans out as indicated by the latest runs. I would preheat home and put on shorts for this early evening in the case you no longer have furnace by morning.

Yes, lots of people are bound to lose power and it's crazy cold outside.
Bunty 11-27-2015, 05:33 PM Planning on going to Bedlam game tomorrow, how should roads be in the morning?
Surely bad, if the streets have become cold enough. Hopefully, forecast will be right and temps will be above freezing by early afternoon, especially if precip must continue. Light rain changed to light freezing rain earlier this afternoon in Stillwater, but has stopped. Streets there still okay for now. Bedlam game time temp is forecast to be 34, subject to change.
They should consider cancelling the Thunder game.
People might be able to get there okay but leaving and trying to get home is going to be a nightmare.

And here I thought I was being smart by putting up christmas lights last week when it was warm.
I will be lucky if they survive the night or when chucks of ice start falling down the roof.
Bobby821 11-27-2015, 07:21 PM Freezing temperatures have moved a little more southeast which has expanded the area for freezing rain and some sleet. Ice accumulations of up to half an inch are still possible across portions of Oklahoma and western north Texas. This ice could cause problems with power lines and down trees/tree limbs along with cause slick roadways. If you have to travel, slow down, leave plenty of room, and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.
Here is the latest Ice Accumulation map as of 7:00pm 11/27/201511851

Roads will likely be fine through the duration of the event. Overpasses will be the only thing to get dangerous.
This event will be tree/powerline impact.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 09:14 PM Temperatures still falling. OKC already 30F. Could sneak into 29 range as the night goes on. If we get prolonged precip, especially sleet. We could see the roads be pretty bad in the morning.
Just drove across the city 20 minutes ago and power lines are trees are sagging. Probably around .2" of ice accumulated.
Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 09:34 PM Broadway Extension is closed @ 122nd due to multiple wrecks on overpass.
Bridges are ice rinks. Only time will tell how long the regular roads hold. I think once waves of sleet move in, it is all over.

Anonymous. 11-27-2015, 09:54 PM Rainfall rates really picking up. This is actually doing what I mentioned a couple days ago. Warm rain falling through the shallow cold air @ the surface is actually warming the air.
Could really aid with keeping accumulations down.

In Stillwater, it stopped the temp falling and upped it by a degree to 32.5.
OKCisOK4me 11-28-2015, 02:59 AM It's exactly 32 in NW OKC right now. Can't wait to hop in the car and sit and wait for the defrost!
OKCisOK4me 11-28-2015, 04:11 AM I just got to work. If you can't drive 55mph, then you shouldn't be on the highways. Went 35 in a 40, 55 all the way down Lake Hefner Parkway and I44. Worst part was waiting for the car to defrost so I could scrape it. If your car is in a garage then you're good!
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 05:04 AM Temperatures rising rapidly now. Looks like this could save this from being borderline historical.
Radar shows moisture stream still pumping. Most of OKC is right at 32F.
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 05:09 AM I am in edmond right now. Powerflashes are pretty much constantly happening and many branches and weak trees are down across the area.
Yes, looking out my window right now at Red Andrews Park, many limbs are down and all the trees are heavy with ice and hanging low.
But, streets seem to be wet not icy and obviously my power is still on.
Dustin 11-28-2015, 08:07 AM My power is out. Typing this from my phone which I forgot to charge last night.......
From my house:

okatty 11-28-2015, 08:56 AM Lots of large tree damage out NW OKC. Anything soft is damaged - bradford pear, sycamore, cypress etc. Took a long walk and snapped some pics - will see if I can load a few in a bit.
My sons power is out in 41st Classen area.
ljbab728 11-28-2015, 09:36 AM There is a tree that has completely fallen over and is blocking a sidewalk near me in NW OKC.
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 09:44 AM Most of OKC now at 32.x or higher. If this was later in the season and the temps were 2-4 degrees colder, I am positive this would have been the worst ice storm on record for C OK.
We are lucky to get out of here with the half to full inch of ice accumulation.
UV radiation and temps technically above freezing should continue to melt off the trees and power lines.
PhiAlpha 11-28-2015, 10:23 AM The jig is up for my Bradford Pear trees, they had a good run.
Saw a massive limb drop on my neighbors power supply line, cool spark...bad result. Can hear limbs crashing all over the neighborhood.

That's a very eerie sound! Heard a few large crashes this morning too.
bchris02 11-28-2015, 11:05 AM I am not currently in OKC but was planning on coming back today but don't want to if my power is out. How is the 23rd St area near Shartel?
Jim Kyle 11-28-2015, 11:14 AM That's a very eerie sound! Heard a few large crashes this morning too.Quite a few trees down near NW 122 and Council, and also in Silver Lake area. Here's one lying across the dock of a friend on Harbor Drive; we're cat-sitting for him...

I'm close to nw 36th & Dewey & we've been out since around 3am.
Bobby821 11-28-2015, 12:06 PM The Ice Storm Warning has been extended until 6:00 pm this evening for central and western Oklahoma as temps are now not expected to get above 32 degrees.

It's melting like crazy at my house. Not sure how much total precip we got but talked to person in Kingfisher today and they got almost 4 inches since this started.
pw405 11-28-2015, 01:17 PM we should stay above freezing according to Mesonet:

SoonerDave 11-28-2015, 01:56 PM I hadn't planned to get out today, but when I did, I was stunned at the extensive large-tree damage by today's ice storm. I'm here in SW OKC and did not think we had been hit this hard. Several large trees just split like toothpicks.
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 04:14 PM Sun is beginning to set and there is still significant accumulation on surfaces in C OK. This will help refrigerate temps tonight. We will likely drop another degree or two, plus the lack of radiation overnight could result in additional icing.
Models can't decide if they are ending the precip here or not. There are indications of redevelopment of freezing rain overnight over much of the western half of the state and into central OK.

Tree damage is really extensive NW - some streets are partially blocked, fences down etc. We have family in NW OKC (41st / Classen), Yukon and also south of El Reno all without power since very early AM and still out. As was said above, had it been a few degrees colder this could have been monumental storm. Still pretty big but could have been much worse.
OKCisOK4me 11-28-2015, 05:07 PM Throw in some wind and really coulda been a lot worse!
Bunty 11-28-2015, 05:54 PM In Stillwater, the ice storm only glazed the trees and made those without leaves look pretty without bending them much. The temp barely rose above freezing before sunrise. The weather did discourage a lot of people to come early to Bedlam to tailgate.
Stillwater has a lucky history of dodging bad ice storms, except for one over 10 years ago. That one broke a huge branch off a Bradford Pear tree in my yard and slightly damaged the roof.. Don't live there now, but what was left of the tree still thrives.
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 07:20 PM Large precip. Bulb expanding back in TX. If it holds together it will make it to C OK. The big question is what will the temp be when it arrives.
woodyrr 11-28-2015, 07:32 PM Thanks for the updates. The #okwx twitter hashtag I normally follow had been curiously quiet with regard to forecasts today.

shriekingviolet 11-28-2015, 08:45 PM Wow this ice storm has been bad! We thankfully still have power where I live (just south of Mercy Hospital), but just about every single tree in our yard has sustained major damage. And the branches are still coming down! I heard another big crash just 10 minutes ago. Makes me really glad we had a large maple that was half dead cut down earlier this month. Any breakage there would have taken down our fence.
woodyrr 11-28-2015, 08:53 PM I hope this event comes to a halt pretty quick. In December of 2007, my house which is in an area of Midwest City that is fairly densely populated with single family residences, was without electricity for a very frigid and quite uncomfortable fourteen days. We were so happy to see the crews from the Elliott company from somewhere in the southeastern Unites States show up on our block to re-string the wires!
Anonymous. 11-28-2015, 09:13 PM OKC dropped from Ice Storm Warning.
Temps just aren't falling ahead of the precip. Looks like rain @ 32-33F. Which isn't enough to warrant significant additional accumulations. Unless temps drop back to about 30, OKC should be done.
Bunty 11-28-2015, 09:27 PM I've lived in Oklahoma all my life and can only recall dealing with power being out for a long time and that was just overnight and into much of a day, due to a tornado on two occasions.
The limbs hitting the house didn't wake me but when the power stops do does my cpap. Real rude way to wake up.
Bobby821 11-29-2015, 04:01 PM So when is the next winter storm due in here?
bchris02 11-29-2015, 04:12 PM Hopefully the next one is snow and not freezing rain.
Snow is fun but nothing good comes from ice storms.
Bobby821 11-29-2015, 06:18 PM I have a feeling with the Strong EL Nino this year we are looking at more ice than snow for our area of the country.
