I will always remember that wonderful aroma of fresh baked goods driving across the old I-40 on many mornings when I worked at Canteen eons ago. Can anyone tell me what bakery was down there? If I remember right there was a Hostess but also thought Rainbo or some other bakery was downtown. I wish another bakery would move downtown and start baking in those early morning hours again.

That was the Continental Baking Co., which made Wonder Bread. Closed in '86 and demolished to build the MAPS (now Chesapeake) Arena.

Continental Bakery, just about where the Ford, or Chesapeake, or whatever it is now. Our first grade field trip was there fifty some years ago and we got Twinkies as we left. I'll never forget the sight of the workers man-handling a wad of dough the size of a smart car into the machinery.

I remember that bakery smell well when traveling across town. Even better, as a kid, when standing on the Santa Fe platform downtown, waiting for the train to Chicago.

I remember going to some bakery as a kid. I don't know where it was, I'm guessing maybe here.

The Rainbo bakery on Broadway is still there, although it is owned by Bimbo balkeries now.

We had several bakeries all within the radius of the downtown core. Continental, Rainbo & Bond bakeries raising the yeast ozone with an aroma that permeated throughout. Many customers often went into these establishments with a request to purchase bread fresh from the oven--request denied.

The aroma was so strong that it help boost local sales of bakeries in that vicinity like Browns & Dunkin Donuts.

I can sometimes smell bread on my way to work, approaching DT on 235, heading south.

Maybe it's because I grew up on a farm and wasn't bothered by smells that offended most people but I don't mind the smell of the cotton mill.

That would be coming from the Bimbo bakery just to the south of 23rd Street on Broadway.

Can one walk in to the Bimbo Bakery and buy fresh bread and other freshly baked goods? I have to admit that I never heard of Bimbo Bakery

Doubt you can buy fresh but they do have a store you can go in and buy their products.

I don't see them carried in many stores but most of the Mercados I shop in carry Bimbo products.

Unless you had an inside contact. I have a somewhat older sister. Her husband and his father both worked for Bond and later Rainbo. We often got bread while still warm when I was a kid. Great stuff!
