View Full Version : Sunnyside Diner
Roger S 06-24-2016, 02:44 PM I noticed they have an ad out looking for experienced line cooks. Sounds like the issues may be inexperience or understaffing in the kitchen.
I was one of two people in there first thing this morning and it took longer than it should have for my order of biscuits and gravy to come out. The waitress apologized for it but it all worked out in the end as I was doing updates on our office server with my phone at the time. So I was in no big hurry.... Now the growing crowd of people coming in as I was leaving might have been affected a little more by it.
Tundra 06-24-2016, 09:33 PM Went for breakfast this morning, and got the biscuits and gravy, eggs over easy and bacon. Coffee cup sat empty for quite awhile before it was refilled and they weren't all that busy.... My meal arrived and the first bite I took was of the b&g and it was lukewarm, they guy I was with asked me if my gravy was hot, so it wasn't just me... Waiter never came back by to check on us, so we just kept eating...honestly even though it was lukewarm it was so damn good it didn't matter that much too me.
When the waiter came back by finally I did tell him the temperature just wasn't right and had it not been so good, I woulda had him take it back. My eggs were more medium than over easy, but also still had a good flavor. I'll be back but they need to correct the few little issues I experienced , not everyone will be as easy going as I was...
I too noticed they are looking owing for line cooked and wait staff, that tells me they are aware of the problems people are having..
catch22 06-25-2016, 12:15 AM Sounds like lack of experience. New servers either over-refill, or under-refill; either over-check or under-check tables. It's part of the confidence thing. They just lose track of time, and either check too often and annoy, or don't check enough and frustrate.
I went on Saturday morning and the service was excellent. The biscuits and gravy were delicious. Coffee remained full the entire time. The wife and I decided this will definitely go into our regular weekend breakfast rotation.
Bullbear 06-27-2016, 02:32 PM We went Sunday and there was about a 30 minute wait. Very nice touch to have coffee at the hostess stand for us to have coffee while we wait. we had French Toast, The chicken Biscuit and the hangry man breakfast. All were great! the roasted potatoes I really enjoyed and tried a bite of hash browns and they were very good as well. The French Toast was good but LOTS OF FRUIT on it. I prefer less but that's just a personal preference I will probably get plain French toast next time if I go that way. The eggs were over medium and were cooked correctly. Was a great breakfast we will be back.
Teo9969 06-27-2016, 03:24 PM How's the pricepoint in comparison to Jimmy's Egg?

Teo9969 06-28-2016, 11:21 AM Thanks, Paseofreak!
Tundra 06-28-2016, 07:27 PM Had breakfast again today, and got to witness two waitresses get into a cat fight, over one of them taking a drink order for the other one.... Needless to say it wasn't appreciated by the other....
So for the rest of my meal I had to listen to this chick explain how she came from fine dining and it's important to make first contact herself... I finally told her , she's working at a diner and she needs to learn some teamwork...
Oh the food was good , gravy was not hot again, and my over easy eggs came out 5 minutes after everything else.... I think I'm giving up on the eggs for awhile , but the gravy , I could have that on just about anything.....
Thomas Vu 06-29-2016, 03:48 PM I wish I read that yesterday. I stopped by there today. Ordered the hillbilly hash with eggs over medium. Not as much yolk came out of the eggs that I would have suspected, but didn't see any solid yolk. Dish itself was good. Their blueberry lemonade is super tart. Reasonable prices, would go again.
Verbode 06-30-2016, 10:16 AM We had a great experience at Sunnyside Diner. We decided to review it for our blog. The pancakes were great and the hashbrowns were done just how we like them. It was obvious they are trying to get into a routine and make sure their service and food is done right. If you notice your food isn't as you asked, they will not mind fixing it quickly. The best thing you can do for a new place is let them know of their small mistakes and they learn to not make them.

Martin 06-30-2016, 12:52 PM went back to sunnyside today and the process was way smoother than last week. the food was delicious again but where they really shine is in customer service. they remembered my co-worker and i and made extra sure that everything was right. i'm really impressed by this place. -M
BBatesokc 07-12-2016, 01:42 PM Went today for lunch and had the chicken and biscuits with mashed potatoes and a side of bacon. Probably the best C&B I've ever had.
Arrived at 12:30 and immediately got a table for 3.
Will definitely go back.
Had breakfast at Sunnyside today.
I arrived about 7:15 and only a couple of tables were occupied. Slightly busier when I left around 8AM. Slower than I would have expected.
Had the biscuits with sausage gravy. Very, very good, as were the eggs and bacon.
I'm not a big breakfast person but I look forward to trying some different items.
Service was excellent but one big thing that has become a pet peeve: their guest wifi was not working properly. I'm sure it was just a temporary glitch but it galls me when the restaurant staff doesn't know the network name or the password or how to reset anything. It's very common and the operators merely need to take the time to make sure their staff understands this stuff.
Not singling Sunnyside out here but the issue is far too common and it's particularly critical at a breakfast / coffee place.
OkiePoke 07-13-2016, 06:25 PM I had lunch here today.
I had the BBQ Pork Hash (forget the name). It was pretty good. Had a little bit of spice to it. Although, there was something sweet in it. If sweet isn't your thing, you may want to avoid it.
Next time I'm going to have them throw some peppers in it.
BBatesokc 07-13-2016, 07:55 PM First trip was so good I had to take the wife today. She loved it. We both did chicken & biscuits. I had hash browns as a side and the wife had new potatoes.
Arrived at 12:30pm. All the tables were taken - bar was completely empty. Got a table within 5 minutes. Several empty tables by the time we left. Hope they are sustaining a constant stream of customers.

Sounds like the hillbilly hash
Jeepnokc 08-04-2016, 01:18 PM Met a friend for lunch there today. Went right at noon. Was busy but still a few tables open. No hostess and no sign to wait or seat yourself so wasn't sure whether to seat ourselves or not.
Drink order was taken fairly quickly. Place appeared clean. They do have mixed drinks. I ordered the meatloaf sandwich with mash potato and brown gravy. ($9.99) The sandwiches are served on brioche sandwich sliced bread. The mash potato was a little chunky and gravy had great sauce. The meatloaf was very good. Would prefer that it be cooked in a loaf pan where it is one solid piece of meatloaf versus several pieces that fall out of the sandwich. Would order it again. Nice juicy tomato and fresh leaf lettuce was served with it. My friend had the corned beef hash and said it was very tasty. ($9.99). His eggs were over easy and they were prepared accordingly.
Noticed on the menu that they serve brown gravy, sausage gravy and turkey gravy along with a good selection of sides.
Had a late breakfast / early lunch about 11AM today.
Was about half full at that odd hour but by the time I left at 11:45, there were people waiting. Pretty darn strong business for early lunch.
I had the Hillbilly Hash with scrambled eggs... Delicious! It's pulled pork with a bit of spice over roasted potatoes with the eggs on top and a side of sourdough toast with their homemade jam. I'm not a jelly/jam person but theirs is very good. And I was hungry and still didn't finish it all due to the healthy portions.
Service was great as well... All around a really good experience and I'm glad to see them doing so well.

David 08-05-2016, 01:28 PM Oh wow, that looks good. I have plans to go for a run down on the river tomorrow morning and have been thinking of stopping in at Sunnyside again afterwards, I may have to try that.
reverend 08-05-2016, 02:27 PM Went and had what I guess would be brunch today with the wife and our nearly two year old daughter. The wife got the chicken and biscuit with a mimosa and I had blueberry pancakes. The blueberry/lemon compote kept the pancakes from being too sweet, and my wife said the whipped cream tasted like ice cream. I was too full of pancakes to try her chicken biscuit, but she said it was fantastic.
They seem to have a really well dialed-in menu of comfort food with some nice twists, nice presentation and fairly reasonable prices.
My lunch was $12 with a huge diet coke (and free refills) and that's more than fair given all the different items, quality and portion size.
Jeepnokc 08-08-2016, 12:33 PM I recommended to my staff that they try it today. They just called in a to go order and was told that they don't do to go orders during lunch. Then she came back and said that they weren't busy right then so they would make an exception today. Bizarre.
David 08-08-2016, 01:43 PM I did try that Hillbilly Hash over the weekend, it was pretty tasty. The pulled pork had a bit more heat than I was expecting, but that wasn't a bad thing.

Right, I wasn't expecting the heat but enjoyed it.
I'm not a breakfast person so those types of dishes are the only thing that will get me to come back before lunch.
Finally went today for lunch. We had a long wait for a table, and watched two different groups leave without getting their food. When we finally got seated at one of the abandoned tables, our waiter was excellent. Drinks were served quickly, and I ordered the tamales. My friend ordered the Western omelet. We also asked for a meatloaf sammy to go. Our wait wasn't TOO long, but my food was cold, and the Barracho beans were still quite toothesome. My friend said the omelet was excellent, and the to-go order was brought out right on time (it's recipient said it was marvelous). I'll go one more time so I can try the Purgatory dish, but if the kitchen doesn't have a rhythm down by then, it'll be a while before I go back. Always complement the waitstaff if the problem is in the kitchen! (Unless they suck too)
TechArch 08-15-2016, 12:55 PM My dad and I went last Friday at around 12:30 for lunch. There was no wait and we were seated immediately. The waitress was friendly and attentive to our table. I ordered the french toast with lemon-blueberry on top with a side of ham and my dad had the turkey day sandwich. Both entrees were more than enough food. I liked the french toast, but after a while it was way too sweet and I have a sweet tooth. The side of ham came out later, but it was almost cold. The size of the ham was disappointing for the price, but the flavor was good. My dad enjoyed his turkey day sandwich. I will definitely go back, but probably order something different.
BBatesokc 08-16-2016, 12:36 PM Well, I finally convinced some people at the office to try this place out (today). We called in an order and sent someone to pick it up. They just got back with it and as we started to unpack it we realized they gave us someone else's order. Pretty frustrating. So, she's driving back to see if our order is sitting there or if it was given to someone else. Makes me wonder, will they give this food we picked up and left with to a customer or will they realize they should remake it to be on the safe and fresh side? Needless to say, I hope the food we eventually get is good, otherwise they just lost some downtown customers.
Ginkasa 08-16-2016, 01:02 PM Certainly a very frustrating situation and potentially a little embarrassing considering you were the one to get your office on board with the restaurant, so I can absolutely understand some bad feelings towards the location. But mistakes do happen and we're really only getting half the story here without knowing whether the restaurant took care of you or not. Additionally, you're "wondering" about a worst possible decision that hasn't happened and may not ever happen and we will likely never know if it occurs or not; basically, you're creating a "complaint" out of thin air just to throw a little more wood on the fire.
Previous posts have substantiated that the service may be a little hit or miss at this place, but I would take your post alone with a grain of salt without at least a little more information.
BBatesokc 08-16-2016, 09:08 PM Update: Well, a lady from the office took the wrong order they gave us back. They took it and handed her the correct order. About 30 minutes had passed by then. No offer to remake the order, no offer to refund what we paid and no offer to provide a gift certificate for our troubles.
Then, to top it off, when she gets back and we dig in... the food is cold and the sides of mashed potatoes have no gravy. Oh, and we were one set of silverware short.
So, despite Ginkasa's apologist remarks, this is not a "complaint out of thin air."
Needless to say, co-workers were not impressed and not likely to want a repeat visit any time soon. Not to mention all the ribbing I got for talking this place up.
I hope they can get the customer service kinks worked out.

Just to clarify, my post was a request for more information, which you have now provided and which I appreciate, and not intended as an ultimate denunciation of your experience. Its very disappointing to hear they didn't take proactive steps to correct their error.
Roger S 09-08-2016, 07:31 AM Stopped in for breakfast this morning and had the classic over-medium with sausage. The yolks on the eggs today were perfect and everything else was great. I was there about 6:30 and got in and out in under 25 minutes. Only 5 other diners were in at that time.
My last visit before this was pretty bad... After raving about how great their chicken fried steak was the first time I tried it. The second time was, well to put it gently, less than stellar...... Everything was well prepared today and those sausage links they serve are only rivaled by the ones they serve at The Diner in Norman.
turnpup 09-08-2016, 09:52 AM This place is on our regular rotation and we've had consistently great quality food each time we've gone (5-6 times by now). Our only "complaint" is that it seems to take a long time to receive our food. But that's OK. We know to not go when we're in a hurry.

That my friend is the "standard" diners in Oklahoma need to be judged by. High praise.
Bits_Of_Real_Panther 02-02-2017, 06:52 PM It looks like they are adding Tuesday-Saturday evenings, almost there, but not quite the 24 hour diner!
David 02-18-2017, 09:36 AM This may seem petty, but I'm kind of annoyed at this place now. Previously when I have gone in by myself, I haven't had any problem getting sat fairly quickly as a single person party up at the bar. But just a little bit ago, in spite of having a couple different bar seats open the guy at the front was going to make me wait 15-20 minutes until after the larger parties already there were sat. I said no thanks and left since I'm not going to stand around and wait while getting to stare at the open seats just wasting away unused.
It was pretty disappointing.
dankrutka 02-18-2017, 02:18 PM I wonder if the waiter was new. I would have asked for a manager because I've never heard of someone asking you to wait for another group to be seated before taking a spot at an open-seating bar. I wonder if he was confused or misunderstood that the bar is open seating.
Martin 02-18-2017, 09:01 PM yeah... for bar seating, not sure why someone couldn't just seat themselves at the next available spot.
Jeepnokc 02-19-2017, 02:09 AM Curious...are they serving mixed drinks before 10 am and if so, how are they getting around ABLE laws?
Bits_Of_Real_Panther 02-19-2017, 02:25 AM For the 2 or 3 people on here who are not well versed in the law, what are the ABLE laws for mixed drinks, at any time of the day, esp the 10am thing, thanks.
Uptowner 03-02-2017, 09:34 PM ABLE isn't the governing arm, just the LE(law enforcement). State makes the rules and no alcohol of any kind, including 3.2 is to be sold between the hours of 2am and 10am.
As far as sunnyside is concerned, they treat the bar like a diner counter. You don't need to be drinking to sit there. I know when I dine alone or +1 it's much preferred to me taking up a whole table. Although I'm nearly 100% sure one would need to be 21. Like any restaurant bar. However I haven't noticed the sign. And it begs the question, I suppose, if you wanted to be a stickler, if anyone could actually sit there before 10am. Since bars are strictly not allowed to have non-on-the-clock employees inside the premises (al la the liquor service area) between the hours of 2am-10am. I remember the spring lake cops giving some bars hell several years back for letting customers stand inside the door past 2am (no beverages) to stay warm while they waited for taxis.
Uptowner 03-02-2017, 09:37 PM I should edit that to say that the ABLE commission also has the power to interpret and pass ruling on the laws and amendments to the state constitution to enforce those that apply to alcholic beverages and a small assortment of randoms it has collected over the years..
BoulderSooner 03-03-2017, 08:17 AM 3.2 beer can absolutely be sold before 10am.

Yep, it's always funny to see people who have worked all night at the hospital ordering beer when I'm picking up breakfast at Big Truck.

I know this is off topic, but when I first started in data processing I worked the graveyard shift and typically, several of us went to a bar that served breakfast and had bacon, eggs, and beer. It was dinner and our "evening". After one or two (maximum) it was home to bed.

No, totally understand it... it just caught me off guard the first time I saw it... especially half asleep without my morning coffee.

David 03-27-2017, 04:05 PM Finally got around to trying again on Saturday, and in a similar situation this time I was instantly sat at the bar. Who knows.
Pryor Tiger 03-27-2017, 04:52 PM Honestly after an amazing experience this last weekend, I think Sunnyside is an excellent diner. Very personable team, we had 4 adults, 1 child, and a baby and they were constantly updating us on when we would be sat. The food was out of this world good. I had the lemon blueberry french toast, eggs/cheese, and two sausage links. Prices are awesome, and it was full with a line the whole time I was there. The simple fact they put a coffee station out for those waiting puts it up a notch in my book. The decor is awesome including a Kodaly mural that if you look closely is very detailed of OKC. The idea that you could eat there and then go over and eat at Revolucion is enticing...
Tavia 11-01-2017, 06:35 PM Did anyone else see the blurb in the paper today mentioning a new Moore location, possibly by the end of the year??
Tavia 11-01-2017, 06:38 PM I think it's Sunnyside Diner, no Up!!! sorry
Roger S 11-01-2017, 06:54 PM I think it's Sunnyside Diner, no Up!!! sorry
Did it say where? Surprised the restaurant at 12th & Broadway has sat empty this long. Coukd see them going in there.
Tavia 11-01-2017, 07:20 PM It did not say where ):
Bobby821 11-10-2017, 12:03 PM It looks like Sunnyside Diner which is located in downtown OKC area is going to be opening up another location at the old Swaddley's/Jim's on SW 89th and Western.

Martin 11-10-2017, 12:30 PM that's great news... still miss jim's, though.
Tavia 11-10-2017, 05:41 PM Someone shared in another post that this would be going in the old Swadley's location at SW 89th and Western....
Roger S 11-10-2017, 08:47 PM that's great news... still miss jim's, though.
Miss the original Jim’s. Never cared much for Swadley’s version of Jim’s.
Very happy to be getting the Sunnyside on the south side though I was hoping it was going in the former Peking buffet at 12th & Broadway. Heard another diner is going in it though. Heard the name would be PJ’s.
Martin 11-11-2017, 06:08 AM Miss the original Jim’s. Never cared much for Swadley’s version of Jim’s.
i never made it out that way for the original but never had a bad experience with the current version... but maybe i liked it since i didn't have anything to compare it against.
I was hoping it was going in the former Peking buffet at 12th & Broadway. Heard another diner is going in it though.
is that the old harry bear's on the north side of 12th? if so, didn't realize that place went out of business.
SoonerDave 11-11-2017, 06:24 AM The "for lease" signs on that old Swadley's were conspicuously taken down about two or three weeks ago. Figured something was up.
Urbanized 11-11-2017, 12:03 PM Considering Sunnyside’s ownership connection to S&B/Coach’s I wonder if they will add the Denco Darlin’ to the Norman menu.
