View Full Version : Which movie have you seen the most?

A friend of mine posed this question to me and I was a bit stumped as I had never really thought about it.

After a lot of contemplation I'm pretty sure the correct answer for me would be A Christmas Story.

Although high on my favorites list, it's probably not a Top 10er for me. But.... I watch it every single Christmas season and have since it came out 25 years ago, and often more than once a year.

And I'll continue to watch it for the foreseeable future.

Others that rank high up there are The Godfather, just because it's so darn good. But also The Commitments and The Nightmare Before Christmas because I love the movies and the soundtracks, so there are many times I just queue them up to listen to the music.

This is a bit embarrassing, but I've never seen The Godfather. I also tend to not watch movies more then a couple of times, so I'm not sure I could even pick one that I've seen more than 3 times. Maybe The Wind That Shakes the Barley.

My top 5 are probably -
Star Wars - its been around so long and I know I've watched it a lot, beginning with seeing it in the theater on the day it released when I was a kid. I'm going to guess I've seen it upwards of 50 times, all the way through.
The Empire Strikes Back would be a close 2nd to the above.
The Princess Bride - at least 25 times, maybe more. I know, I know..."Incontheevable!" :)
The Fifth Element
The Blues Brothers

Rounding out to 10, these would be in there somewhere -
The Shawshank Redemption
Ghostbusters
Outlaw Jose Wales
Spaceballs
Blazing Saddles

Dang, there's a ton more I keep thinking of after the fact - Raider of the Lost Ark for one! This is too hard. :D

My exact experience. If I run across it I have to watch til the end, whether it is opening credits or the last five minutes. Though I sometimes then switch to my owned version on AppleTV, to avoid edits and commercials. Easily my most-watched movie.

BTW, I had probably seen it at least 100 times before I realized that the movie is really about Red, not Andy. Call me dense, but the way the story is told makes you THINK it is about Andy.

I agree that it's one of those movies that if I happen past it, I almost always end up watching it to the end no matter where I come in.

Godfather is the same way.

Not many I intentionally watch more than once, although I find myself watching movies I didn't remember seeing the first time.

Most number of times seen would probably be Wizard of Oz since we watched it every year it was on TV when I was a kid and some times since.

Christmas Story is one of the wife's favorites, so I'm stuck.

I just watched Moonrise Kingdom again the other day. I probably will again. It's lovely.

Pulp Fiction has seen a couple of repeats and I'd watch it again.

The only movie I've watched more than 5 times is Romancing The Stone.

Seen Christmas Story over the years too, but only on TV.

Never seen The Godfather either, but have been by some of the actual sites in Sicily where parts were filmed.

I've seen Back To The Future at least 300 times. I used to work for Waldenbooks. When they were pushing VHS tapes, they let us pick a movie to put on repeat. 3 times a day times 5-6 days a week adds up. Crocodile Dundee wasn't too far behind.

Of my own choice, I would put down the following:
The Natural
Field of Dreams
A Christmas Story
While You Were Sleeping (my wife's favorite)
Airplane!

Most of my repeat viewing came during my childhood and teen years. I'm not sure if I've seen any movie more times than I've seen Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Had it on VHS as a kid and watched it over and over for ages. Also seen the original TMNT movie who knows how many times.

Natural Born Killers
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Crow
Interview with the Vampire
Dumb and Dumber
Lebowski
Easy Rider
The Dark Crystal

Aside from The Crow, I can still put on any of these movies and enjoy them. I tried revisiting the Crow in my adulthood and it didn't seem to age well, but I'll probably give it a shot again soon and see if I can re-appreciate it.

EDIT
Had to add Blazing Saddles to the pile.

Assuming this refers to Shawshank Redemption? If so, I can tell you that when I first saw it in the theater - during its original release - it was with a big King fan, who had read the novella. I had no expectations (didn't even know it was a King story at the time), but she came out of the theater remarking about how true to the book it was. I've heard some others say the same sense. I know there are SOME differences - for instance Red was white and not nearly as sympathetic a character, but I think it was pretty accurate overall.

If you have 4 kids like me you have likely seen every animated Disney film at least 100 times, followed by the original 3 Star Wars films. Because my husband loves them so much I have likely seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Tin Cup, The Replacements and True Lies the most with him. Personally, I watch any and all Jane Austin movies any time they're on, as well as A Fish Called Wanda and the Shawshank Redemption. I have to agree that My Cousin Vinny is a big favorite as well.

That was my experience with my nieces watching the Ducktales movie over and over and over when they were younger. I had it memorized! Now my daughter has me watching Frozen as many times. I can sing right along with the film now (to her delight).

Excalibur.

One summer in the 1980's I literally watched that movie every day and could recite the first half, word for word, for years after. The second half of the movie sort of loses it's way, pretty much concurrently with Arthur losing his way. Overall, it's a visually beautiful movie although much of the acting now makes me cringe. Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Ciaran Hinds and Gabriel Byrne were all just starting their acting careers when they appeared in Excalibur.

I have the distinction of buying the first VHS cassette ever sold at the Ponca City Hastings. I went in right after they opened the doors and found Excalibur on the shelf with both a rent price and a purchase price. I took it to the register and the cashier didn't even know that people could buy VHS tapes rather than just rent them. I had that tape until about 3 years ago when I sold it for a dollar at a garage sale. The sentimentalist side of me sort of regrets selling it but it would just be more junk cluttering up my Man-Cave.

Gosh this is hard.

"Shawshank" is clearly up there. "A Few Good Men" is, as well. "The Fugitive" is also an all-timer.

Next-tier: Apollo 13, "The Help" (a newcomer), "A League of Their Own"

"Christmas Story" is *the* movie that I will watch endlessly on Christmas, and is the one my wife and I will remember staying up late and having run in the background while we wrapped Santa's goodies for our then-little kids. "Christmas Vacation" is a distant second, but it's still a seasonal favorite. "Home Alone" is a big deal, too, but for some reason it doesn't seem to get as much play as it once did...maybe perception on my part.

The first Star Trek movie is in there, but that's more of a "me" thing rather than a family favorite.

Lots of titles I've left off there I'll think about later :) :) :)

"The Last of the Mohicans." Probably seen it about 50 times...really. The. Best. Movie. Ever. I almost never watch a movie more than a couple of times, maybe three tops, but this one is an exception. In fact, just watched it again today.

Another would be "Grapes of Wrath" (in black and white, no less).

And, yes, "Christmas Vacation" and "27 Dresses." I like diversity in my movies. :)
