Came across this the other day. Some of you folks here may have already seen it. I thought it was pretty cool. It's a large collection of photos taken around the country between the years 1935 & 1945 , and the counties where they were shot are matched to a map of the United States. Click on any county on the map highlighted in green, and it will bring up photos. The darker the green, the later in that decade the photos were taken. You can go all over the country. ....Very cool!.

Also being a child of the 60's, I remember driving down there with my mom, and as we crossed the river, her telling me about Community Camp and the people that lived in shacks along the river. I remember seeing some of the shacks that were still there, along the south bank of the river by Penn, though I don't know if there was anyone still living down there. .... I'm betting there was.

I don't ever remember that truss bridge at May Ave. I think it was already gone by my time. It's interesting that the location is described as "Mays" Ave in the captions.

A very small part of the old camp area was still occupied in the mid-50s. One of my assignments as a general-assignment reporter for The Oklahoman in 56 or 57 was to interview some of the occupants and describe the area, just before the city cleaned it up to pave the way for rearranging the river. As I recall, it was closer to Penn than to May, and was on the north side, not far from Mulligan's Flats.

There was a similar area east of Byers, approximately where the I40-I35 interchange now resides, that was condemned about the same time.

Doug Loudenback's web pages have a quite extensive history of these neighborhoods but somehow seem to have missed the whole "Community Camp" from the mid to late 30s...
