View Full Version : Greek Restaurant
Plans are underway to bring an authentic Greek restaurant to the old French Cowgirl space at 4512 N. Western.

Preliminary plans call for the space to be remodeled to include a small bar inside and another on a new pergola-covered back patio, as well as a casual fine dining setting with Greek design influences.
There will also be a directly adjacent parking area.

The menu is being developed in conjunction with a chef in Greece and will feature lamb, skewers, authentic gyros and other traditional Greek offerings cooked over a charcoal flame.
The name, branding and final design should soon be completed.
The restaurant and bar would join several other dining options in thriving Western Avenue corridor (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Western+Avenue+District), such as Sushi Neko, The Barrel (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Barrel), the Drum Room (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=Drum+Room). VZD's (http://www.okctalk.com/showwiki.php?title=VZDs) hopes to reopen in late June or early July.

The entire area is getting an extensive renovation through street, sidewalk, and landscaping improvements. The changes will allow for plenty of outdoor seating for the new restaurant along Western, which may be added later.

The proprietors hope to start construction once the proper rezoning is obtained, with a targeted opening of late 2015.
bchris02 06-16-2015, 01:06 PM Like I said in the other thread, I cannot wait for this. Will be nice to have an authentic Greek restaurant in OKC that serves the correct meat (lamb). Hopefully this becomes a big hit.
This will be the real deal, and there isn't any authentic Greek food in OKC.
The proprietors are also planning to invest heavily in the remodel.
Will make a big difference on this stretch of Western, which will soon be completely transformed.

Martin 06-16-2015, 03:32 PM this sounds great! -M
Does OKC even have a legitimate Greek restaurant?
Even Zorba's calls itself Mediterranean, which is not the same thing.
I was told this restaurant's gyro meet will be supplied by on outfit out of New York, not local suppliers.
I really think this place will be legit and something really needed in the local dining scene.
Plus, that location is fantastic. I smell a home run.

If you go into a Greek restaurant, order a gyro, and they ask you "chicken or beef?", its not authentic. I am not aware of any authentic Greek restaurants in OKC.
There is Dimitri's Peacock downtown, but although they offer gyros, not sure if any are lamb and more than half their menu is non-Greek.
Martin 06-16-2015, 03:51 PM yeah... after eating there once, i wouldn't consider dimitri's to be authentic. the gyro that i had there was pretty disappointing. -M

When I've eaten at Dimitri's, something is off about the gyro meat. It doesn't taste quite right to me and there's a film it leaves. I can't think of any truly authentic Greek restaurant in OKC.
Martin 06-16-2015, 03:57 PM what i'm hoping for is something more like this:

and less like this:

Since they will be using charcoal, it will likely look more like this:

Martin 06-16-2015, 04:10 PM oh... i can live with that. in fact, that'd be better than what i pictured. can't think of anything in town that doesn't use the pre-formed gyro meat cylinders. -M
I was very spoiled in Toronto. Hopefully this will live up to it.
Bits_Of_Real_Panther 06-16-2015, 06:18 PM Its not Greek, but they have gyros and an indoor charcoal grill at Istanbul.
Teo9969 11-10-2015, 01:54 PM Any update on this? My belly getting restless.

Where is Istanbul?
soonermike81 11-10-2015, 02:45 PM Where is Istanbul?
On May, just south of 30th or 36th? In the same strip as Jersey Mike's. Great food, btw!

Thanks, soonermike!
bchris02 11-10-2015, 03:11 PM I wonder if this restaurant is still in the works. Maybe it was delayed by the construction on Western Ave?
Istanbul is decent, but isn't quite what I am looking for in a Greek restaurant.
Uptowner 11-10-2015, 03:25 PM I can't ever remember to go to instanbul. What a bizarre location. I checked it out just as they were wrapping up construction in 2014. Looks nice. Looking forward to the Greek, and really hoping for more than feta sprinkled on everything, kabobs, and gyros.
MagzOK 11-11-2015, 07:01 AM Sweis's Brothers has wonderful Greek food. It's at about the 2100 block of N. May.
tsou89 11-11-2015, 05:35 PM Yes this restaurant is still a GO. There were some zoning issues and a lot of remodel to do on the structure. It might still be a while but last I heard all is good to go.
Plans continue to move forward. I've seen the preliminary design and it's very impressive. The outside will look completely different and they are planning to make a pretty big investment in both the interior and back patio.
Also, I've seen the menu and it's authentic and very interesting. I'm really looking forward to this because the operators know what they're doing and this will be completely unique in OKC.
This is their logo and name:

bchris02 12-12-2015, 11:22 AM Really looking forward to this.
TheTravellers 12-12-2015, 12:47 PM We're looking forward to it too, very much - Zorba's and Let's Do Greek just don't cut it...

Doesn't Zorba's advertise itself as Mediterranean?

Wouldn't Istanbul be Turkish food, not Greek? That would be like opening a restaurant named Rome to serve French cuisine.

Yeah its Turkish.
OKC doesn't have an authentic Greek restaurant until this opens. Everything is either extremely Americanized (Let's Do Greek) or generic Mediterranean cuisine but not exactly Greek.
soonermike81 12-14-2015, 11:43 PM Off topic, but Mediterranean Grill on the southside is our go-to for Mediterranean. Best falafel in town, imo

In my experience what we call Greek food here they call Turkish food in Germany. The food I had in Greece doesn't resemble either. What the heck is Greek food anyway?

Ingredients of many Greek and Turkish dishes are similar, but a lot of difference in spices and often in preparation. Most Okies may not know, but most Europeans do know. But then again, most Europeans know the difference in northern Italian cuisine and southern Italian cuisine. Here, most haven't a clue there is even a difference.

I'm down for some educating. Not trolling.

+1.
Is it trolling if you manage to slam OK/OKC in the process? or is it a mandatory show of allegiance to your peer group (like a politician wearing a flag lapel pin) to show that you are SO MUCH BETTER than all of those around you who are blessed just to share your space?
shawnw 12-16-2015, 01:31 PM I didn't realize the French Cowgirl closed. That was a neat shop, shame.

Rover's kinda right - as a whole, OKC diners are fairly naive and provincial, but as always, there are exceptions. A lot of OKC diners *do* know a lot about cuisine, and a lot of OKC chefs are trying to educate the diners, so the level of dining knowledge might tend to creep up eventually, I hope. Part of the reason I believe they don't know a lot is that a lot of Oklahomans don't travel - I have never heard as many people proclaim that they've never been across the state line, or to <pick your spot that you would think everybody has been to>, or across the Mississippi as I've heard in this state (and some say it proudly  ) . Some old data I found shows that between 30% and 40% of Oklahomans own passports, which is one of the lower categories (most of the south is under 30%), so Oklahomans just aren't well-travelled enough to know a lot about the intricacies and details of cuisine.
Teo9969 08-31-2016, 02:04 PM I was hoping this would be open before the end of the year. Do they have a date they're looking to open by?
