Hey ven, can we get an update on the weekend? If it's just going to be rain I'm still planning on going on vacation, if the severe threat is higher I'll cancel.

Sure! I'll toss it up with the evening models tonight if that is okay?

Update for today...Two TOR warned storms...one near Walters in SW OK another just over the river in North Texas. Also a third storm over Anadarko is rotating and needs to be watched as it moves closer.

You are just overreacting to this. He is just showing the output for a model. Sure he could just do a spread forecast with a general consensus, but every TV station tends to have their forecast models that throw out numbers...and they happen to show values at that point in the forecast. Every mode does the same thing as well. If you are taking this model output to be "this is exactly what you are forecast to get" then you are overestimating the ability for models to handle things on a mesoscale/micro level.

Is he outright trying to impress people? I doubt it. Everyone does it. It just gives pin point values of a specific model's output. If the viewer is reading too much into it, that is their problem.

If I may overreact, Morgan has raised his projected estimate for Stillwater to 4.40", still the most. Simply amazing in view that sw Oklahoma may really get the most. Or maybe Norman. But maybe reporting projected rain totals from the media is inappropriate to do in this thread and should instead be posted in: Oklahoma Media - Weather Coverage.

Significant flooding in Norman

As of about 1.5 hr.’s ago water was running over Main Street in Norman about 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep.
Norman officials had several creek crossings blocked off in the heart of Norman.
Lindsey Street should have been closed.
Lots of emergency vehicles out. I’m sure homes were flooded.

Looking ahead, how does this weekend look from here? SPC hasn't updated to include a 15% risk in their day 4-8 outlook yet. I think last week by this point they had already put out a 30%. KOCO and KFOR seem to be more focused on the flash flooding risk this weekend than the tornado risk as of the 10PM newscast tonight.

In addition, KOCO was talking about severe chances every day from now until the end of May. With that in mind, does anything look particularly high-end for C OK at this point? Can we expect a pattern shift as we go into June or does this look to continue?

Probably because flash flooding covers a larger area of the metro, and could potentially affect many more people, than a tornado could. It's a real threat. Perhaps they haven't put out anything about a major severe risk because the models aren't showing it's going to happen yet.

Still isn't anything more than a marginal severe risk yet for this weekend.

I hear what you are saying about flooding. I don't live in a flood-prone neighborhood but if I did I am sure I would take it a lot more seriously.

You don't have to live in a flood-prone neighborhood. It's the city streets that become the problem. The storm drains can't keep up and street flooding becomes a problem. The ground is so saturated it can't absorb any more water, so it all runs off into the street. Then people are out, as always, and the rain comes down and then they get stuck.

You also don't have to live in a flood-prone neighborhood to flood. 2013 taught us that, and many others throughout the city. Not much you can do when it rains 8" over a few hours.

Let's say there was a higher risk for tornados this weekend, your personal risk of actually being affected by a tornado is low. There is a much higher risk of a lot more people getting affected by flooding this weekend.

Slight risk for Central into SW OK. Good low level shear today so supercells with damaging winds and tornadoes possible today. Hail threat not very high. Stay weather aware today.

Radar estimating over 6 inches of rain in Elk City the last 2-3 hours. Massive flooding taking place.

General clearing ahead of this boundary as it sags SE is going to result in severe storms across SW quadrant of OK this afternoon.

Anonymous.
05-23-2015, 12:53 PM
Everyone in the east side of this boundary is at risk for severe weather.

Embedded supercells along the boundary look possible.

Good area of clearing in the southwest. Low level winds also kicking up a bit getting rid of this fog. Low level shear today is favorable to help get storms spinning and to overcome any reduced instability. This isn't going to be your typical warm, soupy setup. This is one of those where low level dynamics favor rotating storms and will probably results in a few tornadoes. Just stay aware.

HRRR has several waves of storms through the rest of the day and indicates decent updraft helicity with most of them.

Tornado Watch soon...

Venture -- in your educated opinion, will that wall of water out west make it to the metro, and if so, when would that be? A friend has a wedding tonight but I'm worried about needing to be here to batten down the hatches (namely, set up sump pumps) if we're going to get rain like Elk City.

More than likely it will get here. Probably closer to 6 or so for that line. We are getting development ahead of the line so that will impact the time line a lot.

Has that line shown any indication of lessening over time, or is there just so much moisture that we can expect the same kind of rain here?
