Don't know if anyone is following the flooding situation in Houston but it looks absolutely terrible down there.

Just by its location and topography, Houston can flood by somebody sneezing. Most of the time its an annoyance. But this is on a whole 'nuther level. Schools closed, thousands of stranded/flooded cars, probably just as many flooded homes and businesses. The worst mass flooding event I've seen in Texas since Tropical Storm Alison.

I can't imagine anything worse than Allison. I was home from college that summer interning downtown. It was crazy.

I had the sirens part from OKC. I think they have actually sounded their sirens more for storms not threatening their area more then they have for storms that are.

Do you live in OKC and hear OKC sirens or did you hear Moore/Norman sirens? I was thoroughly confused when KOCO said they were getting reports of sirens going off in the southern part of the metro. The storm was already east of Norman when it was warned, it appeared.

Emily Sutton always looks good, regardless of what she is wearing! Of course, for me it was "crush" at first sight the first time I saw her broadcast. :o

I'm surprised there is so little activity here today. I've come to depend on this thread for my weather information since our local stations' web sites are practically worthless when it comes to getting a concise weather report.

I live in Moore at Santa Fe and 34th so it was OKC's I heard (in the wonderful sweet spot where the 3 towns converge). I checked the news just to be sure as well and not only was it already East of Norman but it appeared to be moving ESE further away.

I am an outdoor warning siren enthusiast and I think Oklahoma City's siren policy is beyond absurd.

As I mentioned in the "Media" thread. If Oklahoma City does not have the "Weather Warn" software that automatically selects only those sirens within a tornado warning polygon for activation, they can easily obtain it or any number of other products compatible with their Whelen outdoor warning siren system.

This is Weather Warn. There are others as well.

Some of the sirens in north Cleveland County within the OKC limits went off this morning. There is one not a quarter mile from our house that is in that region, but as best I can tell, did not go off. They were blowing for about 5 minutes, maybe longer, before they systematically went quiet. All for a storm that threatened exactly *zero* people in OKC.

My mom texted me and I told her not to worry about it, it wasn't anywhere near us, moving away, and she said "why do they blow the sirens, then?"

I don't have a good answer for that. I mean, I know why they do, but..I don't know why, if you get my drift :)

After last weekend's storms in OKC that started with the "surprise wedge" in Pocasset, we were heading back home from my mom's cellar and stopped at the grocery store. While we went in, the sirens went off. You know who reacted? Nobody. And about five minutes later, maybe more, a guy comes over the PA and says "disregard the sirens, they were for the other side of the county."

All we're doing is training people to ignore the sirens.

<snip>

All we're doing is training people to ignore the sirens.

Unfortunately until people start complaining to their council person it's going to continue until someone gets injured from it.

Besides most of the cities stance on sirens is they are for warning people that are outdoors as taken from Moore's policy

"Note that the siren system is designed to be an OUTDOOR warning system. Newer construction homes are typically built to suppress outside traffic and neighbor noises, unfortunately the sirens are suppressed as well. Add in the typical sounds of televisions, computers, game systems, radios and just normal conversation, and it may be unlikely that a siren could be heard indoors." Outdoor Warning System Information | City of Moore (http://www.cityofmoore.com/outdoor-warning-system-information)

Dangerous game to just rely on sirens are your only source for a tornado coming your way.

From what I understood, they changed the way they've been doing the OKC sirens a while back. I could be wrong but I thought someone mentioned that. I don't know if it's a permanent change or not. I live close to the Paseo area and, other than the noon test, I haven't heard any in a couple of weeks. Maybe since the 6th when they went off 10+ times? I thought it was strange during the other storms since then when people were complaining about the sirens going off and they weren't for us (or several other people I've talked to). I have to say, it's been nice. :)

I live a mile East of 77 and a couple miles South of Slaughterville Road. Getting home from work Sat night / Sunday morning was rough. 60th, Slaughterville, Bryant, and Duffy was impassable. Bryant at Choeteau Creek is where Slaughterville lost their brush truck, it was being washed into the creek. The fire department was doing water rescues on Slaughterville road, the county sherriffs had 77 and Chouteau Creek closed off keeping me from going any further South. I ended up having to double back, and go back to Norman to catch 35 into Purcell. Lexington was flooded out, most of the houses especially along their little drainage along 1st St were all flooded out, and the police had that blocked off. I ended up having to take York, and even that was treacherous since it had a river of water flowing at it's lowest from the runoff of the hills and overflow of the creek. I was very lucky my car wasn't swept off the road or water didn't get into the intake. The intake and coil do sit high on the engine and I have a K & N air filter, so I am sure those attributed to my little PT making it.

Luckily I live on a hill so I didn't get flooded out. Some of my drive has been washed out from the water flowing on it, but nothing a box grater and some rock can't fix when it stops raining. I do have a little stream that flows through the property that starts from a natural spring about 1300 feet away from my property. The road drainage is also attached to this stream that then connects to the creek. That stream went over it's banks, and it's banks are a good 30 or so feet.

Well, if you're outside working in the yard, or at a kid's soccer game or just out at the park, then yeah, they certainly help. If you're having fun you may not notice something coming up, or it could just look like normal stormy weather until it isn't just normal stormy weather.

I heard no sirens this morning, but I'm on the far NW side. Slept right through anything that might have mattered.

After the heavy rain blew through Tulsa this morning, everyone's cell phones in my office started going off with Flash Flood warnings. But, for people who aren't near a TV or radio or don't have a cell phone, sirens can be life savers.

All we're doing is training people to ignore the sirens.Perhaps that's the point of the policy (but I may be getting even more cynical about policymakers' purposes than I was in my reporting days, which is saying a lot).

Right now, it looks like a change in the general weather pattern is at hand, one that will tend to get us out of the soaker box and into a drier pattern (northwesterly flow). Forecasts look for partly cloudy skies and temps into the mid-80's next week.

Right. My mom lives in a small town where they are ignored by our mets up here (I think she just gets KFOR) because it's so far away, it's too far away for the Dallas stations to care, and their local stations are terrible. My sister and I have called her because she's been under numerous tornado warnings this year (not normal for that part of the state) and she doesn't have a smartphone to tell her these things. I'm not sure if she has a weather radio. She's 71 and alone. Sirens could save her life.

Hopefully this will not hold for long and we will slip back into the wet pattern we have been in. has been nice having the cooler temps and rain and storms. Has been a nice decrease in the electric bill also from it.

Slight Risk again today, central and west. Same story...damaging winds and some hail as the main threats with an early tornado threat with a storm that can stay isolated.

Like others have said, pattern shift going on as the jetstream heads north. Still chances for some afternoon storms throughout the forecast period (through mid June), but nothing really organized. We have a lot of moisture and heat will build in, so you are always bound to get one or two to pop in that environment. Starting around the 9th of June looks like we might get back into a wet period, but we'll see how things progress.

I am originally from SW Okla and grew up going to Altus-Lugert / Quartz Mountain area. Skiing was the summer activity and the lake was a fun place and never really had water level issues until late in the summer toward the end of irrigation season when the lake got pulled down quite a bit. But as a general rule it was a fun enjoyable place.

My daughter has attended the Quartz Mountain Arts Institute the past two summers and it was just incredible how low that lake was and how bad it looked. To see the recent video footage of it at much higher levels (88% last i saw) is really awesome! Glad they can maybe have a good summer with normal lake levels for a while. It's a really cool area for that part of the state and the Arts Institute down there is quite an event.

There are only two lakes in Oklahoma that need more water: Canton and Foss. If we see more heavy rain later this summer hopefully it stays in western Oklahoma since those lakes have a lot more room in their flood pool. The eastern lakes are all at the top of their flood pool. Lake Texoma is over 30 percent above its floor pool.

I assume you mean only the major lakes. There might be some minor lakes that still need more water, for instance, Lone Chimney Lake. Its watershed gets bypassed from the rains even worse than Stillwater. From an article in the May 24th Stillwater News Press:

"In spite of higher than normal rainfall in this area, Lone Chimney Lake hasn’t received much of it. Last year, Lone Chimney Water Association board chairman Darrell Clark said it was like someone was holding a giant, invisible umbrella over the lake and its watershed. That umbrella seems to still be in place. Lone Chimney Water Association staff member Angela Dooley said the lake had received a little over three inches of rain during the first two weeks of May and the lake level had gone up by 1.5 –2 feet, but remained about 14 feet below normal."

Lone Chimney Lake is located between Stillwater and Pawnee.
