View Full Version : Dunkin' Donuts 2015
AAC2005 04-20-2015, 03:31 PM In late December/early January of 2014, there was an announcement that the local Dunkin' Donuts franchise would expand to an additional 13 stores in the OKC metro. The forecasted opening date at that time was 2015, but no specific locations were named. I thought there already was a thread on OKC Talk about this, so forgive me if I didn't search hard enough to find it, but has anyone heard any news about the expansion? Every time I see a new slab being poured on 19th Street in Moore, I get excited and think to myself "this has to be it!", but nope, nothing.
What's up with that?
Are you a Police Officer?
AAC2005 05-04-2015, 04:18 PM I get jokes, but what does your snide question/remark have to do with the price of a box of Keurig K-Cups coffee from the DD, which is why I posted the inquiry?
I haven't seen any building permits for new locations.

Read the warning at the bottom of my posts. I was being snarky. My Dad is a retired OCPD Capt. They use to hold their Retired F.O.P. meetings at Gerald's Doughnuts when it was still open. Didn't mean to step on your toes that hard.
AAC2005 05-05-2015, 08:38 PM lol, no worries! My son is active and my brother is retired, so I was like "get out of my head!" when I read your post. Getting back the original question, I'm guessing that if no movement has been made by now (May 2015), something must have gone south with the plans. The 19th Street corridor would have been a prime location for DD.
Booooo...
I wouldn't mind having one in Mustang.
Uptowner 05-05-2015, 10:40 PM DD keurig cups can be found at SAM'S club. FYI. My favorite :)
AAC2005 06-03-2015, 02:11 PM Yes!!! Norman SAM'S had a bunch of them last Saturday morning, so I really, really looked like a shameful hoarder for a few minutes. Happy, but shameful.
baralheia 06-16-2015, 01:19 PM $300,000 building permit as of 1 month ago for 9100 S Western Ave, on the SE side of SW 89th and S Western Ave. Location will be built on the pad site directly south of Arby's; demolition of the parking lot area is largely complete but building permit is still pending.

Keep in mind the retail DD coffee is not the same beast at all as the DD coffee brewed and sold in the stores. DD licenses the name to some third-party company that produces the coffee. My mom found that out when she started buying the retail stuff and could never get it to taste "right," only to call DD directly and find out the Sordid Truth.
GaryOKC6 06-22-2015, 12:52 PM I met with them last week. they are definitely going forward with their plans. The upfront costs for one of these is huge and that is slowing them down. South western is their current expansion that is under way. They currently have 4 stores and are aggressively evaluating potential new sites other than 91st & South Western..
RedSoxFan 06-23-2015, 12:53 PM Norman/Moore next please. :)
I know they are actively looking in the Penn / Memorial area.
okatty 06-23-2015, 01:46 PM They'd KILL IT around the Memorial / Macarthur area
ljbab728 06-23-2015, 10:56 PM An airline sales rep recently visited my office and brought a box of Dunkin Donuts as a gift. It was very thoughtful but I was not particularly impressed by the donuts.
okatty 06-23-2015, 11:18 PM There is a mom/pop shop on Hefner between Rocwell and Council across from Post Office. GREAT donuts!!! Apple fritters are really good..

Gosh dangit. After I move 2,200 miles from that intersection. :(

VERY good donuts. My girlfriend's apartment was right behind the Dominos. I loved their donuts.
MagzOK 07-03-2015, 07:53 AM Love the coffee at DD, but I read somewhere the donuts are frozen when delivered to the stores only to be thawed and heated for consumption. Not sure if it's just a rumor or not.
Swake 07-08-2015, 07:09 PM The donuts are pretty bad
zookeeper 07-08-2015, 07:12 PM I LOVE their donuts! Apple spice, glazed, and chocolate glazed are my favorites. Addictive, so it's few and far between these days.
I've said this before, but they just opened the first DD in Southern Cal in Santa Monica and my friends out here were besides themselves. Huge lines, everybody going nuts on Facebook, etc.
Having grown up with DD in OKC, I never thought they were anything special and hadn't even noticed they did not have California locations.
But the company/brand obviously has a huge following.
RedSoxFan 07-09-2015, 08:11 AM Coming from New England where is there is one every mile or so, I am excited to see that DD will have an expanded footprint in the OKC metro. I hope they open a couple up in Norman / Moore.
SoonerDave 07-15-2015, 01:51 PM Visited a DD location in Arlington, TX over the weekend and it appears to be next-to-new. Strongly suspect it will resemble what's going in on Western. Nice, clean lines, lots of donuts, and it looked to me like someone back in the kitchen was making at least *some* of the product they were selling. It was a very inviting, unassuming place, moderately busy for a mid-morning, and I think it will be a really nice addition in the city wherever they build.
Bullbear 07-15-2015, 02:48 PM I haven't been to DD for a while.. use to go far too frequently. I stopped last week and got two chocolate cream filled doughnuts. Is part of the new concept smaller Doughnuts? they were noticeably smaller which hey I probably needed but just saying.
baralheia 08-04-2015, 04:14 PM Drove by the new SW 89th and Western location yesterday... Construction is coming along. The foundation has been poured and some framing trusses have arrived. Framing should be starting very shortly and the building will come together pretty quick from there.

If you stick your head out the window as you drive by, you can almost smell the fresh coffee and hot donuts :)

One of my favorite treats to myself is a couple (or three) Dunkin Donuts. Sometimes I crave them.
Dubya61 08-06-2015, 03:52 PM I have used a couple of the soon-to-be-former competitors shops in the area (one just north across 89th and the other further north near Lightning Creek) and I feel sorry for them. Their product is meh and you have to know where they are in advance in order to find them. While Dunkin Donuts still isn't the holy grail of breakfast pastries, they'll kill in that location.

i haven't been in awhile but there's a shop just north of 89th & penn on the east side of the street that makes some pretty good donuts. i think it just says 'donuts' on the sign but the receipts i've gotten from them say 'twist donuts.'
Dubya61 08-06-2015, 04:04 PM Speaking of alternatives, "Donuts / Tacos" on the north side of SW 104th between (but closer to) Penn and May is now something like Donut ____________ (other but not strictly recollected breakfast item ... omelette?).
Martin 08-06-2015, 04:11 PM i have yet to go there... will have to see if i can spot the sign change. -M

Twist it is. And they're *very* good. :)

Yeah, I remember when Krispy Kreme came in and many swore that'd be the death of all the locals, and now KK is history and the locals are doing ok.
I suspect each will find its niche. I'd love to know what % of revenue Twist on the east side of Penn on 89th gets from the church across the street on Sunday's :)
There's also a very similar shop on SW 119th and May that's very good, along with Daylight on 89th & Western....no, they may not *all* survive, but I've learned following the KK scenario that the presumption of scorched earth is...premature.
catch22 08-07-2015, 01:28 PM Twist it is. And they're *very* good. :)
I can confirm. Best donuts in town.
tfvc.org 08-07-2015, 04:03 PM I could tell that Krispy Kream was a fad, just like cupcakes and cronuts. Kathy Lee and Hoda? was pushing KK and they grew way too fast. An implosion was bound to happen. Those things are way too sweet. DD has been around for decades, I don't think they will do much to the local business.

that place is now called 'donut pancake omelet'... which is equally ridiculous. -M

Ummmm...Krispy Kreme was a nationwide brand that has been around since the 60's if I'm not mistaken. They were especially prevalent in the northeastern US initially, then expanded over time. They weren't a "fad." They did just expand waaay too fast. I, personally, liked their basic glazed donut when it was hot, but found the flavor lacking once they'd cooled off - and their flavors beyond that were forgettable.
zookeeper 08-15-2015, 10:19 PM Did I miss something? Did the Hal Smith Group close the last Krispy Kreme on North Penn?
Debzkidz 08-16-2015, 11:03 AM Unless it's closed in the last few weeks, it's still open.

Please tell me you are joking.

Nope, he isn't. Changed about a week ago.

Wow.
I had high hopes for that place. But it sounds like their business plan absolutely was terrible.

Definitely not a fad, I enjoyed Krispy Kreme in North Carolina in April 1966.

I did too. I used to go there a few times a month for their burrito, until I showed up one day and they said that they now close at 2pm. So that lost my buisness since I usually am driving through around 2:50 to go to work. They were cheaper than qdoba and better than taco bell. A $2.00 burrito couldn't be beat.
macfoucin 01-14-2016, 11:56 AM Dunkin Donuts at 89th and Western is now open.
AAC2005 01-14-2016, 12:48 PM I was driving through that area recently and saw that it had magically appeared since my original posit/question about expansion plans. Ironically, I could not take a picture of it because OCPD's finest pulled up next to me as I was sitting at the light on 89th (taking a picture/texting while driving - I didn't have the inclination nor the time to find out if the former is considered a moving violation).
Anyway, since my coffee/K-Cup addiction has been sated by the Waltons, I might consider taking a detour to work one morning and buy a dozen donuts for my co-workers...maybe. Daylight is closer, but their parking lot is a "big itch" even during off-peak times.
soonermike81 01-14-2016, 01:25 PM I'm guessing that they are scaling back their expansion plans? With so many donut shops that popped up in just the past couple years, I can't imagine they are still planning to roll out I can't imagine they are still planning to roll out 12 more locations anytime soon. There seems to be competition on every single corner these days.
old okie 01-15-2016, 04:35 PM DD just south of SW 89 at Western is open. Quality of food/coffee equal to that of their 36th & N. May store. Actually have several of the workers who were at the 36/May store working in the new location...and they recognized us! LOL Must spend too much time at the Dunkin' Donut shop!
Check it out if you have the inclination.
Also, the Donut/Taco/whatever-else-they-wanted-to-call-themselves is now shuttered. Just something very off-putting about donut/taco as the name!
SoonerDave 01-15-2016, 05:19 PM DD coffee is everything it's cracked up to be. Wow.
Tundra 01-15-2016, 06:01 PM Their donuts are not very good....... I read somewhere that their donuts are shipped to each store frozen and then prepared, if that's true that explains why they never taste fresh......
corwin1968 01-15-2016, 06:19 PM DD coffee is everything it's cracked up to be. Wow.
I often buy the DD beans in grocery stores, which I understand is not the same as those used in the restaurants, and even those beans don't give up a ton to fresh roasts from places like Topeca & Elemental. I tend to keep a bag of DD beans for everyday use and periodically splurge on fresh beans.
I love DD's iced lattes but I've never had just a cup of their coffee. I'll have to try it sometime.

As with anything subjective, they are not very good to you. I posted last year in this thread how I absolutely crave their donuts and coffee sometimes. I mean like, "I HAVE to have them NOW" kind of craving. When I hear people say they don't like their donuts I am baffled, because I think America really does run on Dunkin. But, again, everyone has different tastes.

Brett 05-22-2017, 05:28 AM Drove by the new Dunkin Donuts location in the Village just north of Uptown Grocery Co. The outline of a Dunkin Donuts sign is up on the new building. I would guess that it is about a month away from opening.
Brett 06-19-2017, 01:02 PM I noticed that the new location has been added to the Dunkin' Donuts website. Should be any day now for the grand opening.
