View Full Version : OKCTalk meet-up set for Thursday April 23rd
I'll be in OKC soon and am planning an informal meet-up for Thursday, April 23rd from 6-8PM.
Location will be Slaughter's Hall, 221 N. Central in Deep Deuce.
We've done several of these in the past and people are incredibly nice and friendly. Always love seeing familiar faces and meeting some new people.
No need to RSVP... Just put it on your calendar and plan to stop by if you can.
bchris02 04-08-2015, 11:14 AM Sounds good. I am going to try to make this one if I can.
jerrywall 04-08-2015, 02:54 PM Cool, been a while since I've been to one. I'll try to make it.
Unfortunately, I will be out of town. :(
Bullbear 04-08-2015, 03:59 PM Was looking forward to putting some faces to names, but I will be in Colorado for my birthday.. hope to see some pics from the meet up however. Sounds like fun.
tfvc.org 04-09-2015, 05:08 PM I work nights. :(
DoctorTaco 04-15-2015, 09:27 AM I want to come!
catch22 04-16-2015, 01:25 PM Planning on being there, wherever it is.
Pete any ideas of a location yet?
catch22 04-17-2015, 04:48 PM I hope plenty of people make it.
This will be the last one I get to go to before I move to Oregon, and I hope to meet many of you which I have yet to meet.
Really disappointed I can't come now.
Bellaboo 04-20-2015, 12:57 PM April 23rd is getting close. Anyone know where this will be held ?
oklip955 04-20-2015, 01:58 PM Count me in, just let me know where and what time.
Stan Silliman 04-20-2015, 02:19 PM I am going to do some comedy in Bricktown on Thursday starting at about 8 pm if I don't go to the Norman Music Festival. In either case I wouldn't seeing this get together occur in South Oklahoma City or even in Norman at the Embassy Suites. Has a venue location yet been selected?
bradh 04-20-2015, 02:48 PM unfortunately don't think i'm going to be able to make this one, wife had an event on the calendar first, so kids swimming lessons for me :)
You can tell them Pete, I promise I won't show up. ;)
Slaughter's Hall will be the venue.
CCOKC 04-21-2015, 01:24 PM Great! I haven't made it there yet and have been wanting to go. I hope to make it to the meetup.
dankrutka 04-21-2015, 01:45 PM I'm hoping to make it... It'll be funny to put faces with usernames as most of you in my mind are hunched over hermits who live in the darkness that is the middle earth of OKCTalk. ;)
catch22 04-21-2015, 01:47 PM I'm hoping to make it... It'll be funny to put faces with usernames as most of you in my mind are hunched over hermits who live in the darkness that is the middle earth of OKCTalk. ;)
I picture you as Abraham Lincoln for some odd reason.
I don't know why.
turnpup 04-21-2015, 05:19 PM We're looking forward to it!

Might make it myself. Oh, and hermits, we don't hunch. Well, not so much any more.

Laramie 04-21-2015, 10:26 PM Hope to be there on the 23rd "If The Good Lord's Willing and The Creek Don't Rise."
Still recall the meeting many of us posters (Old Oklahoman forum) had some years ago; we met at the old downtown library (Book Box) on Walker Avenue--got a chance to put some faces on posters; how well I remember Patrick, Hot Rod, Rob Anderson & Kerry Decker (JTF) to name a few--look forward to the reunion.
Hope to see others like Pete, Plutonic Panda, Borchard, Pahdz, Tydude, Boitoirich, Mel, Spartan, Urbanized, Bellaboo, Sid Burgess, OU48A, OKCisOK4me, OSUMom, TaoMass, Gen70, Okatty, Bullbear, Sooner Softball, Stan Silliman, Anonymous and a host of others...
David 04-22-2015, 07:55 AM I'm trying to decide if I should go, letting go of the comforting veil of semi-anonymity is a bit of a step. I suppose I've already pierced that veil a bit on my own, anyone who examines my posting history could easily find out, if not who I am, where I spend my time.
I might stop in a bit after 5 on my way home on Thursday.

One thing I have learned is that I don't mind members knowing who I am. I've met many in person and am friends with many on social media. It's the lurkers who I don't want to know who I am because I don't know who they are.
I'm not going to do nametags this time, other than me.
But if you were to go, you'll find people are crazy nice and friendly, as you already have tons in common. And this is Oklahoma after all!
I've made a bunch of good friends at these things over the last few years.
turnpup 04-22-2015, 10:27 AM I'm not going to do nametags this time, other than me.
I was sure hoping you'd do name tags again, Pete. It'd make my life a lot easier, for sure. Nobody would *have* to wear one if they didn't want, or they could just put their user name on it if they weren't comfortable having the real name on there. Pretty please? :)
I'll bring them if I can find them from last time. :)
turnpup 04-22-2015, 10:33 AM If not, let me know and I'll bring some name tags and sharpies. I may even have something we can use lying around here in the office.
Sorry to be a pill, but I'm just so bad with names. I can remember stuff like what people wear, but names nearly always fail me.

Likewise. I know I am not the most respected poster on this board and have many posts that I am not proud of. I want to go but am not sure if I should.

In my opinion your posts have improved since your return from being put in time out.
Then again I'm just a two-bit, hack, wanna-be, Q-blogger.... So I don't even take my own opinion too seriously. ;)

I disagree vehemently with AP's now proven somewhat factual opinion of Johnny Manziel (still doesn't take away his badassedness as a college QB) on here but met at the last one and had great conversation.

Just because people disagree with your opinions don't mean that you can't be friends. Like Brad said, we got in an argument about how Johnny Manziel is a douche (turned out I was right) but met at an OKCTalk event later and everything was cool.
I think you should go.

There's something nice about putting a face on people. There's also something to be said for removing that veil on anonymity from yourself, as it forces you to be at least a little more self-aware in your participation (not that I'll claim it always works :) )
Bullbear 04-22-2015, 03:10 PM opinions on a website don't define a person. I would not hesitate going at all if i was not going to be in Colorado. I think if you are active on the board and are able to attend you may as well. you might be surprised how you get along with people in the real world. Not everyone I associate with has my same opinion on all issues. if they did it would be a boring life.
Teo9969 04-22-2015, 03:26 PM Likewise. I know I am not the most respected poster on this board and have many posts that I am not proud of. I want to go but am not sure if I should.
Naw man…the thing is, forums are not really set up to provide the full separation between attack of opinion from attack of person. I guarantee you no one on here would treat you any differently than how they would treat any other poster on the forum they don't know. Don't take the vehemence of people chatting on a forum with how they actually are in real life…at least not this forum.
If anything, I think you'll find people able to better understand your positions/beliefs/posts if they know you in person.
HangryHippo 04-22-2015, 03:45 PM Likewise. I know I am not the most respected poster on this board and have many posts that I am not proud of. I want to go but am not sure if I should.
Don't be discouraged just because you posted what you felt. It's your opinion - they don't have to respect it and you don't have to give a damn what they think. That's why it's your opinion. But, don't let that dissuade you from meeting fellow OKCTalkers and possibly making new friends.
bchris02 04-22-2015, 03:54 PM Thanks everyone, I think I'll definitely be there. I won't be able to get there until 7:30 or so because of my work schedule however.
catch22 04-22-2015, 04:19 PM As Pete correctly pointed out, everyone is super nice at the events I have been to.
Even people who grab each other's throat in the political section, are usually nothing but smiles and laughs when talking in person.
Forums (and online in general) just have a tendency to fan flames that otherwise would not exist face to face. Nothing can be changed about that and that is no one's fault.
So BChris or anyone else afraid of going because of disagreements -- you'll be pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone is.
oklip955 04-22-2015, 09:26 PM Ok, so we now know where but at what time???
Ginkasa 04-22-2015, 10:08 PM 6:00pm to 8:00pm
oklip955 04-23-2015, 09:08 AM ok, thanks.
I'm going to try to be there, but a friend of mine went and rudely decided to have his birthday party tonight without first checking and seeing how it affected my internet website get together. Some people, man. So I will be late.
David 04-23-2015, 10:03 AM Whoops, I missed the time previously. That actually makes it a little bit more challenging for me, though I may just kick around at work for an extra hour or so to kill time.
I'll be there hopefully not long after 5 and certainly before 5:30 if anyone wants to come by early.
Thanks everyone, I think I'll definitely be there. I won't be able to get there until 7:30 or so because of my work schedule however.
Really hope you can make it.
We will likely move on from Slaughter's later but should still be there through 8PM.
John Knight 04-23-2015, 01:11 PM I plan to be there but probably not until 6:30 - 6:45 or so.
OKCisOK4me 04-23-2015, 01:33 PM I work til 6 tonight so keep this thread updated with where y'all are at. May not be until 7:30 or so before I can make it.
dankrutka 04-23-2015, 01:41 PM I plan to be there but probably not until 6:30 - 6:45 or so.
I'm driving up from Texas (not just for this, but the Marathon too) and heading over with John so I'll be there then too. Looking forward to it.
I'll have the bartender take a photo of me when I get there, then post it so you all will know at least one person when you get there.
Should be great fun!
I'm now hoping to be there right at 5.
OklahomaNick 04-23-2015, 02:27 PM I wont be able to make it! I have tickets to the OKC Movie tonight.
Have fun everyone!
OKCisOK4me 04-24-2015, 12:10 AM Excellent time tonight seeing familiar faces and new ones! Always a pleasure to be a part of these meet-ups.
Laramie 04-24-2015, 02:11 AM It was a nice evening with many OKCTalk posters at Slaughters.
Enjoyed meeting Pete, OKCisOK4me, Urbanized, Urban Pioneer, Turnpup, Catch22, Stan Silliman, Dankrutka and possibly Teo9969, William Hider? Forgive me if I missed any names, tried to remember everyone.
Thanks again Pete, you were a wonderful host!
KenRagsdale 04-24-2015, 05:58 AM Pete,
Thank you for the hospitality last night. It was a pleasure to meet you and the others.

David 04-24-2015, 06:32 AM That was fun, and I am glad I went.
oklip955 04-24-2015, 07:01 AM It was nice to put names with faces and meet the people behind the posts.
turnpup 04-24-2015, 07:11 AM Great time! My little girl summed it up the best. She was asleep when we got home last night. This morning, when I told her what a nice evening we had had, she replied, "So now you *know* all those people, and they're not just names any more!"
Thanks, Pete, for staging these get-togethers!
That was so much fun.
I started to make a list of everyone who was there but I got to about 40 and stopped because I knew I'd accidentally leave someone out and I don't want to do that.
Such a cool, nice group of people all with a passion for OKC.
Here's a little side note... At the end of the evening I noticed the young female bartender had "405" tattooed on both her biceps, quite large. I asked her about it and she said something to the effect, "A lot of us around town have '405' tattoos. It's become quite a thing. People are just proud of OKC and want to represent it."
I thought that was very fitting and it made me incredibly happy.

I've been seeing 405 stickers on vehicles rear windows recently too.
kevinpate 04-24-2015, 07:52 AM I regret missing out. My day took a turn or two for the unexpected, though one of those was in a really good way for a client so no grumbles on my end..
