View Full Version : Anchor Down
The can expand hours without diving fully into lunch.
Much more profit in alcohol sales than food and you aren't going to sell much beer at lunch time.
They are wise to be cautious... Everyone seems to want these places to be open 24/7 but there is going to be some shakeout in the restaurant game in the core and it's wise to be conservative. We haven't see much in the way of closures as of yet but it is certainly coming for some.
Urbanized 07-28-2015, 07:43 AM Yeah, but I selfishly want lunch there because I can walk to the place! And so can most of the CBD...

True. They also only have 8-10 items on the menu, so it's not going to be a regular lunch spot for many people. I think expanding hours on weekends and adding Sunday is the next smart move.
whatitis 07-28-2015, 09:59 AM I went on Friday around 5pm. I was not impressed.
I was with my wife and child and there's only 2 tables you can sit at if you are under 21(with the child we were stuck there but they were both full) unless we wanted to sit outside but it was 101 outside, no thanks. I think ordering at the bar is kinda weird but not a big deal. All those wouldn't matter if the food was worth it.
We got both kinds of hushpuppies, a roger dog(plain corn dog) and a wild dog.
The roger dog was tough and hard to chew. it had big pieces of gristle in it. I didn't finish it because it was so damn tough. My wife had the wild dog. She's a much more adventurous eater and she didn't seem to care too much for it. The batter is great the "dog" part was lacking. The jalepeno cheese hushpuppies were very good. But the strawberry vanilla were kind of lacking. I guess I expected the batter to be strawberry flavored but instead it was regular hushpuppies with strawberries and powdered sugar on top. They weren't bad but they weren't great.
overall because the "dog" is so crucial to the meal I would give it just a 4/10.

Yeah they need Sunday brunch once the dog park opens. There's some big money in that.
soonermike81 08-08-2015, 07:57 AM Wife and I stopped by here the other night. My wife is an absolute corndog fanatic. Me, I think they're just OK. Now, we both agreed that their regular corn dog is, by far, the best corn dog we've ever had. Think it was called the Roger Dog. Definitely a cool spot. Just wish they had more inside seating for kids, they wouldn't let us into the bar side with our 1 year old.
Went for the first time tonight around 9PM and the place was deserted. Besides my buddy and I, maybe four other people inside and on the patio.
I just had the basic corn dog and it was good but nothing to get excited about. I look forward to trying some of their more exotic offerings and am sure the adjacent dog -ark -- whenever the finally do it -- will help greatly.
Quite a bit more people at Urban Johnnies and Bleu Garten (where we spent most the evening) on a perfectly gorgeous night to be outside.

When I paid a visit to Bleu Garten, I mostly found stuff to drink. I wanted something to eat at the time =(

I wouldn't call it a bust yet, but AD doesn't have good flow, the patio space is an awkward shape, and the food isn't very good. They are really going to need to revamp that menu, they won't survive as a bar with below average food.
bchris02 09-24-2015, 12:03 AM Haven't been there in a while myself and I rarely even think about it. I ate there a lot when it first opened but since the novelty of having a restaurant in a shipping container has worn off, it doesn't really offer anything to keep me coming back. The food isn't terrible and is in fact actually decent, but it isn't excellent and competition is stiff. There are also much better places to have a beer or a cocktail. Another thing is they have weird hours. There was several times that I went and they were closed, which kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.
shawnw 09-24-2015, 12:57 AM I like the food. Been there on nights where the patio was full (it's not huge I realize) but the inside was still mostly empty. I'm not sure it's entirely clear to passers by that there's a restaurant/bar when they walk or drive by...
They need something else. I'm not sure what. The dog park would certainly help a bit. But they need an equivalent to how Skinny's has soccer.
The dog park will absolutely help but I don't know why it's taking so long to implement.
Also, they really do need some sort of signage. The friend I went with said, "You'd really have to know this place was here, even if walking by."

Yeah, this pretty much covers my feelings on the place.
Urbanized 09-24-2015, 08:22 AM They need to tune the menu a bit and start opening for lunch. I think they could have a very loyal lunch crowd with the right offerings, and people who lunch there are likely to support the place in the evenings, too.
soonermike81 09-24-2015, 09:11 AM I have to disagree with some of you. My wife is a corn dog fanatic, and I'm pretty indifferent about corn dogs. But we both thought their corn dogs were easily the best corn dogs we've ever had. Talking about the basic one, the exotic ones are are ok.
I will admit that the wild boar corndog I had was delicious, though pretty much everything else was average.
Urbanized 09-24-2015, 09:37 AM Actually I have liked everything I have eaten there, but have found that I'm only good for about 1-2 corn dogs per month. So when I said I'd like to see the menu fine-tuned a bit I'm not at all suggesting they abandon their identity; only that they add a few select items (maybe some paninis or something, to keep it easy) for some diversity. If they did that, I personally would be there more often. If they diversified a bit AND added lunch, I would be there A LOT, and I suspect a lot of downtown/Bricktown/Deep Deuce workers would be too.
Right now, for me, it's pretty much exclusively a drinking spot, and there are plenty of places that vie for my business there, most of whom have some good snack diversity if I get hungry.
HangryHippo 09-24-2015, 09:40 AM Actually I have liked everything I have eaten there, but have found that I'm only good for about 1-2 corn dogs per month.
This mirrors my feelings. I just don't want corn dogs that much. Like Urbanized said, if they had more, I'd go more.
GoldFire 09-24-2015, 10:52 AM I live right across the street and still haven't been. I actually went for lunch the other day only to realize they aren't open for lunch. Seems a very odd choice considering the location.
Anonymous. 09-24-2015, 11:23 AM They do have a large OPEN sign that is lit up, but like mentioned above, you have to kind of know it is there.
I would hate to see it struggle, but part of me thinks it has something to do with lack of dedicated parking (which I know isn't a problem due to on-street parking on nearly every DD street). As mentioned many times before, OKC people are lazy when it comes to parking and walking.
no1cub17 09-24-2015, 11:31 AM Nearly every weekend night I see the patio full. We don't go often but it's been reasonably enjoyable when we've gone. And as others have mentioned - there's some stiff competition these days.
I don't think parking has anything to do with it. We need to stop even discussing parking here. I'm sick of it.
Pete - didn't know you were there last night - I would've come by and said hi!
Anonymous. 01-11-2016, 01:45 PM They are opening for lunches beginning tomorrow.
Not sure if this is a sign of business being good and being able to afford to staff for more hours, or if it is a hailmary attempt to try and make money @ lunch. This place is difficult to tell if there is activity inside, during the winter.
The dog park should be opening soon which will help them, especially during the day.
Urbanized 01-11-2016, 05:19 PM Great news! I will definitely support lunches over there. Need to help get the word out.
Tundra 01-11-2016, 06:12 PM Dumbest move I've ever seen a restaurant, that sells corn dogs do is not open for lunch......I might ever go just because I was crushed the first time I went there and found out they didn't do lunch.... I'm going with the later ,that they are trying to salvage or save the place with a lunch crowd...

What makes me so mad about it is that they have such a cool atmosphere and great food, but I can't tell you how many times I have gone under the assumption they'd hours like a normal restaurant and then ended up at Coney Island, which is also a great place.

This is the 2nd or 3rd time, I've seen such a comment in this thread...so just curious what the correlational is between the dog park and said occupancy/success of a restaurant.
The dog park is literally next door to Anchor Down, where you could sit outside and have something to eat and/or drink while your dog plays in the park.

Gotcha. I knew that they were right next to each other, but not being a dog person I guess there was a disconnect there for me.
Food being around animals and vise versa, gives me the heebie jeebies!
The areas are somewhat separate if adjacent.
I bet you wouldn't have a problem with it if you saw the setting.

I've made the trek over a few times....but alas on both occasions, they weren't open. Looking forward to trying it.
John Knight 01-11-2016, 09:29 PM Anchor Down has also partnered with Jon and Burke Beck of Red Coyote Running here in OKC. Starting this Spring, they are going to have a weekly fun run that starts and ends at Anchor Down. The specifics are still getting worked out but it looks like they will be Wednesdays around 5:30pm. These will be similar to their Pack Pint Run that is every Thursday, but they hope to capture more of the CBD workers and others that live near by. Looking forward to this!

Great idea, especially the downtown part.

Are you a slow learner, plupan? :)
HOT ROD 01-12-2016, 02:46 AM maybe they could also rent a small cart and bring some of their food into the CBD. That could get office workers to try them out, and perhaps they could add a premium to the cart service since it would be so close to the office workers. ....
Perhaps other restaurants should try this (particularly in the non-winter months), get a cart and bring it into the CBD area for office workers who don't have enough lunch time to walk over, eat, and then walk back to work. Sell at a premium and everybody wins.
stile99 01-12-2016, 08:56 AM Are you a slow learner, plupan? :)
I would be a slow learner as well, I have to admit. A restaurant of that type, in that location, not open for lunch? I'd go back once a month or so myself if I worked in the area. To see if either they had gotten a clue how much business they were losing or to see if a restaurant that had a clue to begin with had replaced them yet.

You've likely missed out on some of the best BBQ in eastern OK over the years then. :)

I'm thinking that I would call first if I had that experience instead of just showing up hoping that things might have changed. LOL

Well, my rationale of thinking was perhaps because I went on a Saturday they were just closed for lunch of weekends. Then I took a quick glance at the hours and assumed they'd be open on Sunday later. So I went then and that didn't happen. My fault, yes. Then I thought instinctively they'd be open for lunch on Monday, but they weren't.
So I'm embarrassed to say it did take me 3 times before I finally took a good look at their hours of op. and then made it once.

Uptowner 01-14-2016, 02:55 AM I've been there half a dozen times now, but they've never been open. Now I'm convinced it's a big joke...
sgt. pepper 01-14-2016, 11:26 AM The joke is paying $7, $8 for a corndog, I don't care how fresh the ingredients are...made by hand....blah, blah, blah. The only way I will dish out that much money for a corndog if it was like 2 feet long.

They have some that much in other cities. I don't think that is extremely overpriced. On the high side for OKC, maybe.
Tundra 01-20-2016, 06:16 PM Okay, I was checking out the menu today...does it really cost $7-8 bucks for a corn dog and some chips?Does it come with two of them or just one? I mean I don't wanna sound cheap cause I normally drop 10 bucks for breakfast and another 12 bucks for lunch everyday, but generally it's not for a corn dog and chips (.50 from sonic today btw ) they look delicious, but I don't see people going there for lunch more than once......damn one corn dog wouldn't fill anyone up, would it?
I didn't even see the post from Sgt. Pepper.....^^^^^^
Anonymous. 01-20-2016, 07:02 PM There is two corndogs with the chips, but they are not full hotdog size, they are thicket than [regular?], but not as long?
I don't know how to describe them very well without this turning into a "That's what she said", but follow them on instagram, and you can see some pics.

It's basically one corn dog, split in two, and chips. It's fairly filling, as they're supposedly house-made sausages. I'll say I've been there several times and I've never needed more. It really is a bit pricey, but it's an indulgence, not a regular meal.

Okay that makes more sense, cause everyone's pics usually shows two corn dogs and I was thinking holy he'll I'm not dropping 15 bucks on the corn dog....
soonermike81 01-20-2016, 07:36 PM Like chadanth said, the two corn dogs are slightly shorter but slightly thicker than your average corndog. The two pieces together, though, are probably at least 50% bigger than your average corndog. And again, it's better than any corndog I've ever had. Homemade chips are really good too. I am one that always looks for value when it comes to food, and I don't have a problem spending 7-8 bucks for this.
Chadanth 01-20-2016, 07:41 PM ^^ what he said. It's a fun spot, decent food, good beer selection. You pay a bit extra for that, but I don't think it's overpriced.

They have been open for lunch every day this past week! Noticed during my daily walk to Native Roots at 10am that they were setting up the tables outside and then at noon that the "open" sign was on.
Anonymous. 02-02-2016, 04:43 PM They were closed last night during the Thunder game? And it was actually feasible to sit outside for a bit. I don't understand what is going on with this place and the business hours. It seems totally random.
GoThunder 02-02-2016, 05:14 PM They have been closed Sunday's and Monday's since the beginning. Not sure why.
Anonymous. 02-02-2016, 06:41 PM Oh, I had no idea. That is strange, so many Sunday evening games.
TheTravellers 02-03-2016, 11:25 AM Do restaurants not post their hours on the outside of the building or door anymore (haven't been to Anchor Down yet, so do not know their policy)? That would help a lot for this kind of problem.
Went to the MOA this weekend and planned to eat at Tamashii, got out of the MOA early, so went to Elemental for coffee. Sitting there from about 4:40 - 5:00, we watched a few people go up and try Tamashii's door, and couldn't get in, so they left. We knew they opened at 5:00 'cos we did our research, but not everybody does, and when we walked over there, we saw they didn't have their hours posted. And besides that, if you aren't signed in to Facebook (and I'm not, I don't have an account, probably never will), Tamashii's Facebook page is f-ed up - asks for a captcha, then does some kind of scrolling thing that takes over the screen from the bottom up, the further you go down on their page, obscuring it all.
So basically, what I'm saying is - why do restaurants (intentionally or not) make it hard for people to figure out their hours, just seems incompatible with wanting more customers and more money?
OKCinsomniac 02-03-2016, 12:26 PM Anchor Down's hours are posted on their door. They had a good crowd in there last night.
With spring approaching and the new adjacent dog park, they could still easily find their following.
Hope so. I like the place and the Mule guys are great and I want them to keep doing more.
