Dubya61 03-31-2015, 09:59 AM ... came across a review by an outraged individual who would never eat there again. Why? Because that same charming lady said what happened at OU was a travesty. Turns out she was referring ...
Yeah, I think there are some interesting correlations between this, the Indiana discrimination law, public shaming, and the Arab Spring. I'm certainly not a smart enough man to put them all together coherently, but I can't help but think of the good that's coming from social media and the blowback from the Indiana discrimination law, the way that social media helped fan the fires of the Arab Spring, the horrible way that social media acts to publicly shame individuals not deserving of the social media spot light and this topic (individual racist-related actions painted across a larger group). It's very interesting to me, because I think of my time in the military working with Information Operations, Knowledge and Information Management and Information Security, and think that there are some (military) organizations that really get it. Information is a crucial asset and you need to manage it just like you do your money, capital assets and personnel assets.
Personally, I think that DBo did it right. Was it factual? Not necessarily, but it was good information management. I think that the SAE guy did it right. Over emotional? Maybe but it was what his organization needed to say to stay believable, pertinent, and place it's organization on the right foot for a viable future.
Information Management (and Information Operations and Information Security) is a very active business, if done right, and every entity needs to be fully engaged in Information Operations (PR, if you will) all the time and aggressively.
Finally, all of us schmucks on the street need to know that just because a talking head on TV says it, that doesn't mean it's true or that they're saying something they want you to hear. There might be a "subliminal" inference they're trying to make without out and out saying it. I can't remember the movie well enough to say the name (I think Melanie Griffith was in it, and I know it took place in DC, so I think it was "Born Yesterday", but ...) in which there's a scene where a TV news organization is analyzing something the White House Press Secretary said and telling the viewers what is really being said. I think I'm getting really good at interpreting what is really being said and I see no problem with what any of the sides (DBo and SAE) are saying in this little information theater.
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 12:35 PM I remember when DeBo (or D'Bo, if you prefer/con su permiso) gave an address in the underground basement of Jones High School (back in "the olden days"). I was but a mere spectator, having graduated many, many times before, yet, I think it had something to do with "graduation". I'm sure that the theme was: The Boren Broom Brigade and involved something related or akin to "sweeping changes" hopefully, somewhere other than under the rug. This is one reason that "O, Brother, Where Art Thou" remains one of my favorite films of all time. Even if I disagree with George Clooney's Politics and the scene in which that one dude is turned into a toad. (it implies Disneyesque magic, 'r sumpin').
Yet . . . No Frat/College Daze Flick can ever surpass Animal House in terms of Cultural Accuracy of The Times. =)
(not trying to drift away from the resurgence of Justin Beiber in the forefront of The Public Mind . . . but did you read about that former CFO from one place or another who apparently had Instant Karma smack him upside the head on account of how he dissed that Drive-Thru girl at Chik-fil-A? =)
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 12:42 PM To Dubya 61: You rule, Dude. Well typed, Sir.
I'm certainly not a smart enough man to put them all together coherently, . . . . . .
"The name is Gump. Forrest Gump . . . but you can call me Dubya."
(another one of my personal cultural icons. =)
I hope that I didn't just break some new rule.
Finally, all of us schmucks on the street need to know that just because a talking head on TV says it, that doesn't mean it's true
Reminds me of the Best of Steve Allen and Jay Leno at the same time. =)
(with a trace of Woody Allen and Lenny Bruce. =)
Again: Thank You
mkjeeves 03-31-2015, 12:48 PM The first time I ever saw D'Bo was in the mid '70s when he was pressing the flesh at the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival campaigning for office.

I thought (or at least legend has it) that the proper test of a watermelon was simply to tap it and listen to its response. Not that I'm a big fan of watermelons. Rush Springs is OK . . . (imho)
For sure you don't press the flesh of a watermelon. It's even sort of impolite to ask for a test slice.
At least that's what I've heard and been taught. (OH! you didn't LITTERALLY [misspelling intentional] mean "press the flesh" . . . you were being metaphorical or allegorical or whatnot =)
Yet I've been wrong before . . .
(and I voted for David Boren every time he was up for election)
. . . and will be again.
Not, necessarily "Boren Broom Brigade" wrong.
Simply wrong in general. =)
And that's OK2 . . . ain't it?

I don't think he got close to a watermelon even though he looked like he had swallowed the prize of the season. I do bet he had sticky fingers before it was over with though. I don't remember if we shook hands with him or not. Seems like we sidestepped the line but first impressions are lasting. I've always thought of him as being accessible, a reputation he seems to still enjoy to some extent. Then again, that seems like something my wife would totally do, except for maybe being on opposite side of the fence and having to reach over.
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 01:25 PM "First Impressions Last" (a great bumpersticker, btw) =)
Not to mention on a Tee-Shirt and/or Class Frat Ring.
(on the flip side: Last Impressions First . . ?)
Side Note: Senator/Former Governor Henry Bellmon seemed like a real mensch back about the same time, shaking hands, at an OU Football Game, back when they were a winning squad under the leadership of Barry "Bootlegger's Boy" Switzer. I guess this points up the difference between Politicians and Educators.
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 02:13 PM What really confuses (and semi-troubles) me about this entire Skirmish in the So-Called "Culture War" is that entire "S.A.E." thing . . . I mean, SAE? That (that is, SAE) used to represent the Society of Automotive Engineers (rather than Sigma Alpha Epsilon). Oh . . . wait . . . this occurred on a bus . . . I get it now . . . sorry. Not to mention that it is somewhat difficult to rhyme Epsilon with "tree". But what should one expect from a bunch of Yahoos from Ol' Miss? (about the same as Yalies from The Skull and Bones Klub?) Rhetorical Question: Ans: Yup. 'ceptin' dumbed down with more money. =)
(and a tip o' the Hatlo/Mort Sahl hat t' y'all . . . =)
OKLAHOMANS are supposed to know better. I think Will Rogers sed that.
(or sumpin' akin 2 it)

You lost me at one or two forks in that road so maybe this makes no sense in that context, but SAE was founded at Alabama, not Ole Miss. However, along the same lines of rhyming epsilon and tree, what does an elephant have to do with a tide? To further confuse the issue, wife says back in the day at Bama when she attended, the SAE boys all drove XKEs. (Metric I presume, not SAE)
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 03:03 PM I'm sorry you got lost =) One of my favorite stories/parables, ever, was one that I accidentally paid attention to much earlier in the journey . . . I don't remember who made the connection . . . (and, for sure it wasn't some memorized chant on a bus to a party c/o some college BS of one sort or another) . . . It went something like this: Alice (walking in Wonderland) reached a fork in the road and wondered which way to go. Suddenly, a cat with a Cheshire Grin appeared (as if out of nowhere). Alice asked, "Which way do I go?" The Cat sed: "What is Your Destination?" Alice replied: "I'm not sure . . ." The Cheshire Cat Responded: "Then I guess it doesn't matter."
Nuf Sed, I reckon. =)
[where I was raised up, there was nearly Zero Tolerance for Racial or Cultural Slurs and my mom carried around a box for contributions to U.N.I.C.E.F. somewhere in the vicinity of either Christmas or Halloween. it left a lasting impression. I'm really glad I never bought into the BS of which this entire thead is comprised. specifically regarding Frats and Sororities. =)]

An elephant has nearly nothing to do with a tide.
Yet . . with a tilde? ~ ~ ~?
Sorry . . . must go . . . Justin Bieber is in the news in the background, once again and again and . . . =)
(plus Nikki Mirage and some other distraction . . .)
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 03:48 PM OK . . . in a old and feeble attempt to "perspectivize and balance" paradigms
And in the interests of clarification, here, on the cusp of Easter
Here's a little ZenStuff that sticks:
Two monks
(of one "denominalizational persuasion" or another)
Approached a River.
One of the monks was old and one was young.
By the side of the river was a maiden/young lady.
She apparently was incapable of crossing the river by herself.
The older monk studied the situation,
Told the young lady to climb on his back
And carried her across the river.
Then dropped her off on the other side.
A couple of miles down the road,
On the other side of the river,
The young monk said, to his elder,
"We are forbidden to touch women,
"and you carried her across the river."
The older monk replied.
"I set her down a couple of miles back.
"You are still carrying her."
Unlike SAE at OU.
mkjeeves 03-31-2015, 04:17 PM "It's water under the river."
Some OU football player during a televised interview circa mid '80s.
(I'm an alumni. FWIW.)
RadicalModerate 03-31-2015, 04:37 PM you accidentally left out the , like, the "Water Under the Bridge" in the first expression of concern.
but that's OK . . .
gotta pick up the Best SweetHeart in the Known Universe for the next-to-the-best Dago Dinner,
sublimated, ever. =)
She warn't never no part of no "Sorority" . . . yet she likes to read and appreciates a good supper. Not to mention the fact that she is an Angel.
OKCretro 04-05-2015, 12:12 PM Anyone see the presser with the Kentucky basketball team last night?
Cant imagine the outcry if the Wisconsin player said that about the Kentucky player.
mkjeeves 04-05-2015, 02:44 PM University of Oklahoma President David Boren said in a television interview Thursday that Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s national fraternity president had apologized to him for a post he made on Facebook questioning Boren’s investigation into a racist chant.
<snip>
Despite the apparent apology, an anonymous SAE member emailed The Oklahoman a screen shot that showed Cohen’s post criticizing Boren was still up on his Facebook page as of Friday morning. The post was edited Monday night so it would only be displayed to Cohen’s friends. The post drew more than 450 likes and 22 comments. The member asked not to be identified, fearing retribution.

It was obviously inappropriate and Calipari should do something (although there's not much he can do with Harrison leaving for the NBA), but if it had been reversed then it would have been totally different. So, yeah. It makes sense that it wasn't blown up. Context matters.
OKCretro 04-05-2015, 08:30 PM maybe UK needs to start having diversity classes like oU will have next year

I think the United Kingdom is exceeding the goal in terms of diversity without the need of classes, thank you very much.

Totally irrelevant to the subject at hand, and nothing but a way to rationalize the irrational. "Look ma, he did too."
RadicalModerate 04-06-2015, 11:31 AM glad to know you think racial slurs are a joking matter
Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx and Eddie Murphy did/did do too!
Glad to build a bridge of understanding!!
Did I forget Chris Rock?
Roy D. Mercer . . ?

I'll agree this isn't as bad as what happened at OU, but still relevant to the topic.

They should have been suspended simply for spelling it Cripmas instead of Cripsmas.
