View Full Version : Great movies without music.
Prunepicker 01-29-2015, 11:33 PM Do you have a favorite? Are you aware of movies without music?
I have three movies.
1. The Birds. Odd since music normally played a large part of his
"Cinematic effect"
2. Day of the Jackal. One of my all time faves. I love this movie.
The suspense is remarkable.
3. Fail Safe. So subtle it's not noticed.
Please don't google to find out what you're supposed to think.
ljbab728 01-29-2015, 11:52 PM Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
It's not totally without music but there is very little.
Prunepicker 01-29-2015, 11:54 PM Anyone. Do you have a favorite movie that DOESN'T have music?
This means no music whatsoever. It doesn't mean movies with a
minimal amount of music.
Anyone? Please don't google to find out what you're supposed to
think.
ljbab728 01-30-2015, 12:06 AM Have fun talking to yourself, pp.
Achilleslastand 01-30-2015, 12:08 AM Wow this really got me thinking what movies I like that are free of music. I cant really think of any at all that don't have some sort of music.
ljbab728 01-30-2015, 12:10 AM Actually from pp's list, The Birds has singing in it. Unless you define music as only being instrumental it's not music free.

I know, this is hard. So far nobody has been able to do so. Music has an incredible
influence upon the story line. Can you imagine "Psycho" without Bernard Herrmann's
score? I can't. In fact, it was 50 years before I realized it was totally scored for a
string orchestra.
Some people pretend to get it. Thankfully you aren't amongst them. Did the movie
with Tom Hanks, when he was ship wrecked on an island, have music? Not sure of
the name of the movie. I don't think it did but I don't remember.

True, including the OP. Two of his three movies are no more music free than the one I gave.
Achilleslastand 01-30-2015, 12:31 AM One of the first movies I thought of was one flew over the cuckoo's nest right. I cant remember it having music but I am sure it does.
ljbab728 01-30-2015, 12:35 AM In 'Fail Safe" the background music is very important in providing the tension to this scene.

Just the facts 01-30-2015, 08:34 AM The Jazz Singer - because jazz isn't music.

I heard someone once say that jazz was musicians all playing different songs together at the same time.
Roger S 01-30-2015, 09:14 AM No County for Old Men.
Was that the straight to DVD sequel to No Country for Old Men?
Sorry Pete... Couldn't resist that typo. ;)
Urbanized 01-30-2015, 09:23 AM No County for Old Men.
Wow. Never noticed that it had none, but you're right now that I think about it.

Jim Kyle 01-30-2015, 10:03 AM Don't forget "The Great Train Robbery" and "City Lights" -- and possibly "Birth of a Nation" while we're in the pre-1920s era...
The Jazz Singer - because jazz isn't music.
You beat me to the joke, I was going to find a movie with rap and say that.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre has some weird noises and sound effects, I wouldn't really call "music", and then "Fool for a Blonde" plays in the background on the radio.
Blair Witch Project, of course, has no music until the credits roll.

I think that is acid jazz.
Prunepicker 02-05-2015, 12:12 AM The Asphalt Jungle is another movie without music. Most film noir have haunting
musical themes.
Does "The Last Picture Show" have music? I don't remember.
