I'm watching Rainman. If it weren't for Dustin Hoffman, an excellent actor, the movie would
have been a complete failure.

I honestly don't believe Tom Cruise should be called an actor. He's awful. No, worse than
awful. If my great grand mother, who wasn't an actress, was cast in Tom Cruise's part the
show would have received an Oscar nomination.

Any woman would be a better "male" actor (LOL) than Tom Cruise. Seriously, about the
only actor he can claim to be better than is Don Johnson and that's a coin toss at best.
In fact, an amatuer actor, i.e. someone from Yukon, OK who's never had any acting experience,
could have READ Tom Cruises's part for the first time and done a better job than Tom Cruise
did after several months of intense study, which is obvious he didn't do.

Dustin Hoffman could stare blankly into a camera and emote more than tc could after
months of intense studying and with the best acting coaches in the business.

Tom Cruise is a terrible actor.

Yeah, he's just terrible (sarcastic eye-roll)......

Actually, he's one of a few actors that will compel me to see a movie when I might otherwise be disinterested on 'on the fence.'

His personal life may be a totally different story..... but that doesn't concern me when I go to a movie.

He was riveting in Born on the Fourth of July. I was very disappointed he did not win the Oscar.

Is this really about Tom Cruise being an awful actor or you showing your love for Dustin Hoffman?

You sound like a teenage girl talking about how Jacob is so terrible compared to Edward in Twilight.

This really means nothing to me. Many nominations but few cigars.
I honestly don't see much skill in his performances. I liken him as an actor
on a show playing the role of an actor who can't quite get it.

Hoffman, well, what can you say except that truly he's an excellent actor, excellent actor.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going down the hall and kick myself for that one.

Cruise is a decent actor. What he's really good at however, is picking movies to be in. For the most part I've liked everything I've ever seen him in. I heard War of the Worlds wasn't very good, but I didn't see that one.

Looking at his IMDB page, he's only been in 37 movies (with 3 more announced). But as I look over them, almost every single one was a huge hit. The guy can pick 'em.

The best acting job I've seen him do lately (most of his roles are Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise) was in Tropic Thunder. :)

We can't bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. Give me five bees for a quarter, you'd say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

BTW, I worked on the Paramount lot for a few years and this was during the time Tom Cruise was doing all his films through that studio.

That lot was crawling with stars every day and if you worked there it was not only not a big deal, but the unspoken rule was that no one was to ever make a fuss. This was their workplace, after all.

But when Tom was on the lot there was always a buzz. People talked about it, made sure to get out of their office to see if he was around....

He was the only celebrity that had that type of impact on a group of people who were generally pretty indifferent about stardom. The only other person that came close was Harrison Ford, but even he doesn't have the same in-person magnetism.

Tom Cruise just radiates 'movie star'.

Here are my Top 10 favorite Tom Cruise movies, in general order:

1. Risky Business
2. Minority Report
3. Collateral
4. Born on the 4th of July
5. War of the Worlds
6. Oblivion
7. A Few Good Men
8. Rain Man
9. Top Gun
10. Jerry Maguire

That's a pretty solid body of work.

Yeah, I have to say, Edge of Tomorrow wasn't the best movie ever, but he nailed it. Showed way more elements of his talent in that movie.

what i liked most about the movie was the way tom cruise's character progresses throughout the story. to me, the whole movie hinged around that aspect of the performance. -M

Harrison Ford will probably make a pretty big jump with the 3 new Star Wars movies coming out.

Edit: I liked Edge of Tomorrow. Not the most serious film, but a fantastic summer popcorn movie. I actually really liked Oblivion too.

If Cruise is in a movie, it's probably good. Will Smith used to be that way too, but he's had a bunch of clunkers lately.

I rate TC amongst Alan Alda and Don Johnson. In fact, I use Alda and Johnson,
and now TC, as the equivalent of the Mendoza Line (http://www.bostonbaseball.com/whitesox/baseball_extras/mendoza.html) in Baseball. As with Johnson
and Alda any role TC has ever had can be played by anyone else with a
modicum of acting experience and nobody would be the wiser.

I honestly and truly don't see the appreciation for TC. I seriously don't.

I wonder who Prune would think as the better actor when comparing Tom Cruise to John Wayne.
I'd also ask Prune who he'd think was better between Cruise and Ronald Reagan.

I think Cruise smokes both of them, better roles, better variety of characters, better as an action star, better movies.
