Yup. Models are sure SW OK is going to get the most snow. So be ready, Tulsa!

Well what the heck was the guy on the radio saying up to 8 inches for? I was getting ready to bunker down for a couple days. Guess the stores will have plenty of milk and bread on the shelves this weekend afterall.

Not necessarily. This is Oklahoma. A forecast of enough snow to make a footprint is enough to send people into a frenzy. Working retail during college, people would tell me, "you better go stock up before the storm gets worse." Why? We could still golf in this. :P Interesting about the ice possibility, though. Guess we'll have to pay attention to forecast changes tomorrow.

Also, thanks y'all for doing this. I'm sure it gets crazy trying to keep everyone up to speed sometimes.

Just received this e-mail at work:

The Commissioner of Public Safety, as authorized by the Governor, has announced that due to inclement weather, Deparment of Public Safety may temporarily reduce non-essential services beginning at 08:00am Friday February 27 and ending at 10:00am Friday February 27,2015 for the following counties: Caddo, Comanche, Cotton, Grady, Jefferson, and Stephens Counties. Department of Public Safety employees designated to maintain basic minimum services (staff essential functions) should remain at work or report to work as scheduled.

Atmosphere moistening up in SW OK. One heavy snow band and then embedded lighter snow showers in this precip bulb.

If it holds together, should make C and SC parts in next few hours.

GFS is way up for Saturday night snow totals, coming in with a heavy band somewhere from W OK to N OK, impossible to say where the band sets up. Has hints of 4-6 inch totals in it. Will have to watch each run leading up to that point to see if it maintains.

It is snowing over most of W, SW, and C OK right now.

Atmosphere is extremely dry at the moment, so precip. is evaporating before even getting close to the ground. There is a heavy band moving up out of Altus-Lawton area that looks like it will make it to metro by noon (if it holds together). This band will have enough precip. to overwhelm the atmosphere and get the snow to reach the ground. This will be a dry snow, so visibility will likely be main problem.

12Z GFS has tomorrow's snowband slightly further south, so more of a corridor from I-40 in western OK stretching up towards Tulsa area (where there is 4"+ totals). Again, take any band evidence as a "probably will happen" thing, and not necessarily the exact placement.

Was typing this up on the FB page as Anon posted here, so I'll just past the image that goes perfectly with his comments already. :)

EDIT - The little dot between Ninnekah and Lindsey (over Alex) updated to showing snow now.

Yea got flakes starting now.

Also the snow echos are increasing in SW OK back towards Altus. This looks like it will continue to intensify, thus bringing more waves of snow across C and SC OK.

I went out for lunch at about 10:40 and even though it seemed like the wind had died down, it felt WAY colder than it did at 7:00 this morning. I thought it might be moisture in the air causing the difference in how it felt.

From John Pettis

Oklahoma City street crews back in the driver’s seat

Oklahoma City’s street crews driving 29 trucks have hit the streets in an effort to clear the City’s snow routes of snow and ice. Crews will drive the routes around the clock until the weather improves.

City street crews do not plow or salt neighborhood roads or any street that is not on a designated snow route.

The City received several salt deliveries this week from our distributor, Kansas Salt located in Lyons, KS. Salt is in good supply with approximately 69,000 tons in storage.

Crews can drive about 200 miles in one shift and shifts change at noon and midnight. Snow routes make up approximately 1,150 lane miles of the City’s 8,000 total lane miles.

Regional snow route maps are available on the City’s website at City of Oklahoma City | Winter Weather Resources (http://www.okc.gov/prepare/)

The City urges drivers to take extra precaution over the next three days.

Safety tips:
· Use extra caution when driving over bridges and overpasses.
· Turn off automatic sprinkler systems.
· Remember that posted speed limits are only to be followed during ideal weather conditions. Slow down while driving on snow or ice.
· Give salt trucks plenty of room – stay at least 100 feet behind them so salt won’t get thrown on your car.
· Plan ahead by getting up and leaving the house earlier.
· Keep at least a three-car distance from the car in front of you.
· Steer and brake more slowly than usual.
· Keep warm shoes and clothes in your car.
· Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before setting out.
· Proceed carefully through intersections.
· Have a plan if you slide off the road – who are you going to call?

NAM takes the next wave of snow from N TX PH into N OK, bypassing most of C OK. But then has a kind of stream of sleet/freezing rain/snow showers overnight heading into Sunday as warm air erodes the upper levels.

GFS takes the wave more southerly, across main body of OK. And then warms all layers to suggest rain for Sunday.

One thing I want to point out that isn't OK related. I want to indicate how random winter storms are. There are a few counties north of Fort Worth, TX that are stuck underneath a never ending bulb of snow. tiny band after band keeps developing right on top of them. So if you're headed I-35 S towards Dallas, expect delays in that very localized area at the least.

So this has a chance to turn into a doozie of a storm, right? I mean we could get the same effect that is happening around Ft. Worth and it keeps dumping.

Hey,I like snow and wish we would get a foot tonight so I am looking for anything to grasp onto. I did hear 3 inches tonight/sat. is probable.

Very picturesque morning out there. Big fluffy flakes and probably a little over 3 inches total on the ground now in Norman. The mess starts later this afternoon as we start to mix over to sleet and/or freezing rain. Enjoy it while you can.
