Know any Okies that hit the big time but are not famous in Oklahoma?

Here's one I discovered recently.....Brynne Edelsten. According to her bio, she was born in Shawnee, moved to LA at some point, married a Jerry Jones-type Australian and became a reality show star in Australia. I guess she's a big deal down under. Ever heard of her?

Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, although I think their time in Oklahoma was short.

I think people have heard about Brad and Johnny once upon at time. I don't think the premise of the thread was celebrities that you didn't realize were from Oklahoma. Of course that is a little bit of an oxymoron because how can people be a celebrity if we've never heard about them? That is sort of the definition of a celebrity.

Ah, I misunderstood the thread. I thought it meant celebrities you didn't know were from Oklahoma.

Another recent discovery I made was a woman named Edith Hanson. She was born to missionaries in India but raised in Oklahoma and attended Classen High School. She moved to Japan in 1960 and married a local Japanese puppeteer. She learned Osaka-ben Japanese rather quickly and became famous in Japan with her ability to speak Osaka style Japanese. She appeared in movies throughout the 1960's and made many TV appearances in the 70's. She still lives in Japan today.

i knew brad pitt was born in shawnee, but what is johnny depp's relation to oklahoma?Well, never mind. I just went and searched to be sure and Wikipedia says he was born in Kentucky. I am not sure why I thought he was born here. I was sure I saw something about him being born here, but I guess I had the wrong person.

Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains has connections to Oklahoma. His dad in which the song "Rooster" is based on, lives here.

Yeah. I think the video was shot in Atoka on the family farm.

I think Johnny Depp's only relation to Oklahoma is that he's an honory member of the Comanche Nation.

The guy that lives next door to my parents, is/was a Country music singer. I'm not sure how successful he was/is, because I don't follow country music at all. I just know the name.....because he's my parents neighbor, but from my few direct interactions with him (corraling his wondering Labrador retrievers) he's a super nice guy.

Ty England-

Not sure, if he's considered an Okie celebrity, since I've never heard of him...but, a quick google search, came up with a few YouTube videos.

Given the relatively young age of many folk on okctalk, I suspect Hoyt Axton may be a less than familiar name.
Axton's early days were in Duncan in Stephens County,

He grew up to be a right fair songwriter, singer and actor (television and movie)

Lee Hazlewood comes to mind for me...probably because I've been listening to Cowboy in Sweden lately. Think this is off another album but still not too bad.

Olivia Munn doesn't seem to get enough due as an Okie celeb. I went to school with Josh Henderson (currently starring on the show Dallas). Dari Nowhkah does a good job on ESPN. Those are just a few off the top of my head...

As far as I know, Jerry lives here part time as well. There was an MTV Cribs episode shot at his dad's place.

Maynard James Keenan lived in Oklahoma for a time as a kid, being an military brat.

What's the name of that former drummer, for a Former MainStreamBand, currently residing in Ada, that used to drum for that band that caused Gallery to highlight him in a favorable light, locally, a few years ago? Yes. That's exactly the Unknown Celebrity I vaguely recall . . . If Christoper Walkin (of Live Peter Pan Fame) isn't from Oklahoma, he should be . . . =)

As Will Rogers once quipped . . . sorry, yet it is what it is
And it's OK by me . . .:

She has been just killing it in The Newsroom at HBO. Makes me wish the series wasn't nearly wrapped.

I apologize for not realizing that everyone isn't already familiar with John Fullbright.
(His music--and lyrics--are the next best thing to sliced bread in the comfort of a new car)
=)

Even if he is a kid from a No-Name-Oh town up around Tulsa.
Sorta like where Garth and Wife just moved back to Nashville from . . . =)

First time I ever heard this song was a couple of years ago....I was sitting in a little bar/restaurant in Bangkok drinking a Singha and eating some khao phat when this Thai kid comes up to the stage, tunes his guitar and breaks into this song. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. When he got to the McDonald's over the Will Rogers Turnpike part, I about fell out my chair. Such a surreal moment.....and a great song.

I first heard it listening to Sirius Radio (on the Outlaw Country channel) in a rental car flying down the highway at night on the way back to Oklahoma from Minnesota. I think it was somewhere on Highway 71S in Missouri. But it could have been Iowa.

It was like being hit by a meteor. Something you don't forget.
This guy has played The Blue Door a few times. As has John Fullbright.

James McMurtry needs to be made an Honorary Okie so that he can be one of those celebrities most people have never heard of.

He is not an entertainer, but Tom Kartsotis, the founder of the multi-billion dollar Fossil Company lived in my neighborhood in Bethany in the early 1970's. Tom's brother Kosta who is the current CEO of Fossil lived there also.

Here is one that I'm sure most posters either never heard about or certainly didn't know was an Okie. She was from Leedey in Dewey County and was a huge child star.

While not born in Oklahoma she has an Oklahoma connection.

Vivian Vance (http://www.leatherockhotel.com/VivianVance.htm)

When her family moved to Independence, Kansas, she began her dramatic studies with drama teacher Anna Ingleman. Throughout her childhood, Vance’s desire to be an actress constantly clashed with her mother’s strict religious beliefs. At the age of sixteen she took off to Tulsa, Oklahoma to become an actress.

A lot of people may or may not know this but Dr Phil was born in Oklahoma and played football for the University of Tulsa.
