betts 10-23-2018, 07:02 AM It will be handled better locally anyway. (By local I mean city, no way state does much) That curse is somewhat of a blessing too.
Or not. I don’t think the city has the resources to fund mental health services, etc. ODOT did construct some great permanent homeless shelters with the elevated portion of the boulevard though, as predicted.
BridgeBurner 10-23-2018, 09:39 AM I know it doesn't really matter, but I really hope they string those lights between West Village and Jones like they showed in the renderings.

Downtown Norman has lights strung between buildings over a portion of Main Street and it looks fantastic, so it would be cool if something similar was done here as well.

Downtown Yukon has done the same thing and it is awesome. I really like the old Christmas photos showing huge decorations suspended between buildings throughout downtown, I hope those are coming back!
These are the murals that will be installed on the garage in West Village.

DENISE DUONG IS A VIETNAMESE AMERICAN ARTIST FROM OKLAHOMA CITY WITH A NOMADIC SOUL. HER NARRATIVE AND LAYERED WORKS HAVE BEEN EXHIBITED THROUGHOUT AMERICA AND ASIA. DUONG’S PIECES DELIVER A STORY WITHIN A STORY WITH A SENSE OF PLAYFULNESS AND IMAGINTATION AND A TOUCH OF REALITY.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
LIGHT, MUSIC, AND LOVE ARE MY INFLUENCES FOR THESE TWO PIECES. OKLAHOMA IS KNOWN OF THEIR SUNSETS AND THEIR SKIES, SO I WANTED TO EMPHASIZE THAT IN THE SETTING THAT THE CHARACTERS LIVE IN. I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A LOT OF LIFE HAPPENING IN DOWNTOWN OKC AND THE AREA FOR THE PROPOSED MURALS. WHAT BETTER WAY TO PORTRAY THAT LIFE THAN WITH MUSIC? MUSIC IS THE MOTION OF THE WIND, THE WAY PEOPLE WALK AND MOVE, THE WAY THEY TALK AND LISTEN, AND IT’S EXHILARATING. LOVE IS PASSION AND UNITY. IT’S THE WAY WE COEXIST WITH ONE ANTHER IN A PEACEFUL WAY. APPRECIATING OUR SURROUNDINGS AND BEING AMONGST ONE ANOTHER HARMONIOUSLY IS THE WAY OF LIFE. CREATING A COLOROFUL LIFE TO CELEBRATE LIFE.

While they're better than the plain concrete, I'm not sure I could like these murals any less...

What? I think they're fabulous.
HangryHippo 11-08-2018, 02:54 PM What? I think they're fabulous.
Obviously, just my opinion, but I don't like them at all.
TheTravellers 11-08-2018, 04:41 PM Pretty cool, looks like stills from a Gorillaz video....
Yeah, those get a big fat "yuck" from me.
Southsider2 11-08-2018, 06:57 PM Different. Not my cup of tea
SagerMichael 11-08-2018, 07:15 PM I like them!! If only the murals covered the entire garage
Dustin 11-09-2018, 01:18 AM I like them!! If only the murals covered the entire garage
This is why I'm not for this. I love the art work, but it just looks cheap and tacky if it's only in the middle of the garage. Cover the whole damn thing!

OR at least paint the grey away... with a deep Navy or something .
CS_Mike 11-09-2018, 09:16 AM This was already pointed out in the thread, but I'll post it again. Taken from the RFP:
*Artists should note that the above unmarked areas of the garage (outside mural area) will be covered by corten steel. Artists should consider this in their proposals.

Colbafone 11-09-2018, 09:23 AM I absolutely love this! Total knock out!
CCOKC 11-09-2018, 09:48 AM I absolutely love this artist but I can understand that it may not be everyone's cup of tea. She had a mural on the temporary construction fence just east of the 21c and the Jones Assembly and it always made me smile when I walked by. I was sad when the fence came down.

Ahh, now it makes sense why the mural is only in the middle
David 11-09-2018, 10:26 AM Weird that (as far as I have seen), there's never been a rendering of the garages in the final steel cladded look.
kevin lee 11-09-2018, 11:26 AM These are the same people who knocked the Museum 21 project out of the park. No one really thought this portion of the project would end up beind 75% exposed concrete did you?
Bullbear 11-09-2018, 04:03 PM love them!. these will look great and the Steel covering the remaining concrete will really finish it all off. Kudos! look forward to seeing it complete.
If you haven't been down in this area for a while, the part that is really shaping up along Sheridan looks super sharp IMO.
This whole area is going to be pretty special in the near future.

Yes, there were a few people earlier in this thread who kept harping on the exposed concrete despite repeated assurances it was never going to remain exposed. It was odd.

This project is truly transformative. The entire west side of downtown looks so different.
Sheridan has really become our new Main Street. From here to the Steelyard, you've got about a mile and a half of dense urban development. There are a few empty patches, but I expect they'll fill up in the next few years. This project extended the area that feels like our thriving urban core by quite a bit. It is very impressive.
The feel of it is what is so impressive... Perhaps because it's built around the Jones and 21c, which are already absolutely fantastic projects.
There is a lot more coming to this area too in terms of restaurants and bars.
It sure would be nice to get that county jail relocated.
Plutonic Panda 11-27-2018, 01:14 PM What is the big deal about having the county jail downtown? Most major cities have it that way. It’s better for those who get released as they are closer to services they might need and public transport. It seems more efficient. The county jail absolutely should reconstructed, but I don’t think it needs to be moved way into the sticks.
^
it will be moved, it's just a matter of when.

we could have had that with Main Street as well, but the book is closed on that now.

Is there any ETA at all? Or will it just be an announcement out of the blue...
G.Walker 11-27-2018, 01:52 PM What is the big deal about having the county jail downtown? Most major cities have it that way. The county jail absolutely should reconstructed, but I don’t think it needs to be moved way into the sticks.
The jail has to be within 15 minutes of the Courthouse to transport inmates back & forth. It's more of a security issue.
There is zero movement on constructing a new county jail. Part of the problem is that it's county government, not city government. While the city has done a great job with the MAPS programs and has done a lot to improve quality of life here, the county government has been as dysfunctional as can be. John Whetsel resigned in the face of potential criminal charges. Absolutely nobody trusts the county with the money to build a new jail, not after the scandals that surrounded building this one.
It's probably up to the feds if they're going to force the issue. The county jail still hasn't met their standards, and last I heard the county shut out the federal inspectors who had come by to see what had been changed. Unless they do something, I think that building will stay for the next 20 years.
OKCRT 11-27-2018, 03:32 PM I believe the FEDs gave a deadline to have changes in place. What happens if the deadline is not met? I mean they can't just open the cell doors and say bye bye to the prisoners.
The deadline has already passed. The county made some improvements, but didn't fix everything. They kept getting extensions, and finally were like "this is all we're going to do".
Nobody knows what the Fed response will be, or if there will be one. Theoretically they could shut it down, require the county to pay to house their inmates elsewhere, then build a new one and bill it to the county.
shawnw 12-16-2018, 11:22 AM I heard a rumor hall capital bought sonic and taco bell on sheridan, can anyone substantiate? I have zero first hand or known factual info. This surprised me so thought I'd ask here.
They have been trying to buy both for a while.
My understanding is no deal has been struck as of yet.
shawnw 12-16-2018, 01:16 PM thanks
Rover 12-16-2018, 03:05 PM Taco Bell was bought about 7 months ago by a cattle company from Mill Creek, OK. They don’t operate the Taco Bell. I believe it is just a passive investment. If Hall Capital wants it, it seems strange they wouldn’t have bought it just a few months ago when it was obviously for sale at a pretty good value.

A giant overpass for 7 cars to travel across.
Fantastic project (even with the bare-ish parking garages)! What's next for this general area?
Hall Capital owns several buildings to the south of West Village and they wil do something equally great there.
A bunch more in the works, as this area is very hot right now.
Also, the garage at the west end of West Village will soon have two huge murals.
Dustin 01-10-2019, 04:01 PM It's still hard for me to believe that's what that area looks like now... Total transformation.
rte66man 01-11-2019, 03:41 PM The city better consider extending the Bricktown loop west to this area.

PaddyShack 01-25-2019, 01:03 PM Are all of these new projects in West Village rental units? Or are there units up for sale/ownership?

Yes, all apartments apart from some commercial space.

Jeepnokc 01-26-2019, 09:18 AM I haven't lived in an apartment in 25 years. I remember having a pet deposit but never saw additional pet rent before, Is this common nowadays?
Dogs and Cats Allowed: We welcome 2 pets per apartment home. There is a $350 non-refundable fee per pet due at time of move in. Pet rent is $20 per month. There is a weight limit of 50 lbs per pet, and aggressive breeds are prohibited. Please call for complete pet policy information.

ShadowStrings 01-26-2019, 09:48 AM Very common.
I know at least one local apartment complex that uses a DNA testing service to match dog poop to owners in their complex.
shawnw 01-26-2019, 12:01 PM All Midtown R properties do pet DNA testing I was told (but don't live in one of those properties so not first hand info).
catch22 01-26-2019, 12:17 PM I know at least one local apartment complex that uses a DNA testing service to match dog poop to owners in their complex.
I almost rented from a place that does this. Key word, almost. I always clean up after my dogs, but this takes it too far. If you don’t trust your tenants with dog waste, I can imagine how the move out inspection will go. Hint, probably not in the tenants favor for recovering any of your deposit.
Plutonic Panda 01-26-2019, 12:26 PM I know at least one local apartment complex that uses a DNA testing service to match dog poop to owners in their complex.
Easier solution. Have maintenance people clean up dog waste and that’s it. If they witness someone leave their dog waste behind confront them and fine them.
