Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 02:52 PM I agree it will be a large draw and have a huge impact. Just don't think it's something that they will be jealous of. Of course, everyone is different.
For me, I'm jealous of the malls, highways, roads, landscaping, and shopping options that are available in Dallas.
Bullbear 03-09-2015, 02:55 PM true everyone is different.. I can't imagine leaving a city and saying I am jelous of the Malls, Highways or roads they have.
Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 02:59 PM true everyone is different.. I can't imagine leaving a city and saying I am jelous of the Malls, Highways or roads they have. It's goes way beyond that. I can't image coming into a city that looks as bad as OKC does coming from a city like Dallas and being jealous of a White Water center.
I'll list everything I am envious of Dallas.
NWOKCGuy 03-09-2015, 03:04 PM I don't think people are going to be leaving with the envy of not having a white water rapids course, but that's just me. It's something that's a cool asset for the city to have, but not something they would be jealous of.
I don't know if you know people that are into this type of sport but people will come from all over for this and the active community in Dallas will most definitely be jealous of this.
Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 03:07 PM Dallas:

Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 03:10 PM I don't know if you know people that are into this type of sport but people will come from all over for this and the active community in Dallas will most definitely be jealous of this.As I specifically said, I agree that this will be a big deal.
I would like to see solid numbers on how many people actually use these courses and then compare that to the 320 million people in the US and if you want, 7 million in the DFW metro. I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas announces a White Water course soon. I know it was talked about not long ago.
That list is beyond absurd. It's all your opinion. I like lots of those things as well but its nothing to be jealous at a city over. This isnt a OKC vs Dallas thread because Dallas is the larger and arguably the better city but OKC is coming on fast. Dallas is a great city and OKC is a great city. They each have their unique qualities.
Bellaboo 03-09-2015, 03:36 PM I don't know if you know people that are into this type of sport but people will come from all over for this and the active community in Dallas will most definitely be jealous of this.
What got me started on this was many years ago, while kayaking at Beavers Bend, over half the people we met were from the DFW area. For the up and coming kayaker, it'll be gangbusters. I floated the Pudre' up by Estes Park Colorado a couple of years ago, and it's very popular but boy is the water cold, even in August.
And Plupan my friend, I've got 5 or 6 million reasons to stay away from Dallas.....
GaryOKC6 03-09-2015, 03:44 PM I don't think people are going to be leaving with the envy of not having a white water rapids course, but that's just me. It's something that's a cool asset for the city to have, but not something they would be jealous of.
I don't this that it is just the white water facility but what we will see develop around it. When Charlotte put theirs in they did not realize what a center for activity it would eventually become. This is the starting point for us. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orfvuLZWODE

OKC and Dallas have separate, distinct personalties and are very different from each other. From my experience, people who "click" with one will feel out of place in the other. Some people prefer busy, cosmopolitan, transient culture of Dallas others prefer the slower-paced and close knit culture of OKC. Different strokes for different folks.
OKC should strive to be the best metro of 1.3 million it can be and shouldn't try to compete with or outdo Dallas because it never will be able to do it just like Phoenix will never be able to outdo L.A.

At the end of the day, Dallas is not going to be jealous of some artificial white water course in the middle of OKC. If they want real white water, they're going to go to the Big Bend, Rio Grande, or to Colorado. I'll let you in a on a little secret, Dallas has more class than to go on a white water excursion to some city like OKC for a fake experience.
It's laughable that people on here are saying Dallas is going to be jealous of that. Dallas is hardly jealous of our zoo. But go on, anything to say something Dallas lacks or the typical endless sprawl mess blah blah blah. Dallas is 20x the city OKC is and will ever be and a white water course isn't changing that.
betts 03-09-2015, 04:46 PM I don't think this thread ever implied that any one development would make Oklahoma City a better city than Dallas. What does "better" mean anyway? There are so many ways to interpret that that every single person posting is going to have a different idea of what makes one city "better" than another. Is there any one thing that is going to be built here that another city like KC or Dallas wishes they had? That's all this thread title means. I'm sure Steve is beyond sorry he ever mentioned this,
OKCRT 03-09-2015, 07:51 PM Chicago makes Dallas look like a hick town. There ya go!
Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 07:59 PM Chicago makes Dallas look like a hick town. There ya go!Tokyo makes Chicago look a one street inbred town. What's your point? Doesn't change what I said. You're just mad apparently because you can't refute what I said. By all means, let the Dallas bashing continue. As I said, Dallas is 20x the city OKC is and can ever hope to become.
bchris02 03-09-2015, 08:10 PM Yeah, this is Chicago compared to Tokyo.

Plutonic Panda 03-09-2015, 08:25 PM Lol. Tokyo is at the very top. Besides these new giga cities, I really see Tokyo, NYC, Paris, and Beijing as the worlds leading cities and dominance wise. To compare Dallas to Chicago is laughable. Chicago has 9 million in the msa, although Dallas is growing much faster. Weird though, how a city with a vibrant urban core is being beat out in growth by a city with large sprawling highways and endless suburbia.
Bellaboo 03-09-2015, 08:34 PM lol

You are the one being laughable here. There is a reason the Olympic training centers have all turned to man made courses. A man made course can be changed with the push of a button. It is constant and not dependent upon natural water sources. Give up Plupan while you can. This whitewater course will be one of the best in the world.
Here's what you can do, six months after it's open, come do a car tag check in the parking lot.

What's your criteria for a leading city? Beijing is a ****hole compared to the other cities you listed.

Tokyo can't hold Gotham City's jock strap.

Laramie 03-10-2015, 12:08 PM Outside of New York; Dallas has more $1 million dollar businesses that any other metropolitan area in the country. Steve's 'make jealous' comment was more of a figurative expression than it was meant to be taken literally.
Oh GAWD the Smell! 03-11-2015, 10:32 AM Tokyo can't hold Gotham City's jock strap.
Are you high?
Plutonic Panda 03-11-2015, 11:05 AM Are you high?
My biological mom used to be high. Not sure what happened.

Name any good superheroes Tokyo has.
shawnw 03-11-2015, 12:04 PM Big Hero 6? I mean, I know that's SanFransokyo, but close enough...
Bellaboo 03-11-2015, 03:38 PM Name any good superheroes Tokyo has.
Godzilla...
boitoirich 03-11-2015, 04:22 PM OKC is getting a superhero?
David 03-11-2015, 04:24 PM I'd be jealous of that.
OKC is getting a superhero?
Captain Comet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Comet)
Captain Comet is from "Midwest City". Probably meant as a generic city name, but I'm all for the metro claiming him. Take that, Dallas.

You know, there is more to superheroes than Marvel and DC. Especially in Japan. Do your own homework.
NWOKCGuy 03-12-2015, 11:11 AM I'm going to Kansas City - I'll let you know what I think they'd be jealous of. From what my friends from KC tell me, they have nothing going on by their river though - so I'd imagine what we have going on would make them jealous. :)

Tentacle Schoolgirl Violator Megaforce don't count as superheroes in my book.

I think they are pulling your leg.
I have been told the River Market area and downtown KC have added something like 10,000 residential units in the last 10 years. River Market is a pretty cool area.
Kansas City is a better city and area than Dallas. There's plenty in KC for Dallas to be jealous of and little vice versa. To me the only things better in Dallas than KC are the airport, jobs/economy and Six Flags over Worlds of Fun. Which is sad since DFW is three times larger than KC. Living in Kansas City would be far better than living in the Metroplex.

I really like Kansas City's historic architecture. The city has a lot of charm and a lot of history still intact and that makes for a great downtown. Its an underrated city as well from a national perspective. Kansas City offers a lot that most don't realize it does. In terms of growth though KC cannot even begin to compare to the overall scale of the boom Dallas is currently experiencing.
I agree with you about Worlds of Fun. That is a park that has seen better days. A lot of the rollercoasters that they had in the '90s are no longer there.
betts 03-12-2015, 02:32 PM The Plaza in KC is second to none, although I liked it much better in the pre-chain era when there were some pretty amazing local stores and restaurants. But, it is so beautiful and unique. I can't think of a shopping area anywhere that comes close to it in terms of architecture. We can't duplicate that, much less surpass it, as the cost would be prohibitive. It will have to be something that either is minimally retail or non-retail, if Steve is correct. As far as amusement parks go, the only think that would make KC and Dallas jealous would be a Disney park.
ShadowStrings 03-12-2015, 11:39 PM As far as amusement parks go, the only think that would make KC and Dallas jealous would be a Disney park.
Maybe they would marvel at a Marvel park. Call it Marvel Universe as opposed to Disney Land/World.
There. Theme park and super heroes. :)

Depends on how much you enjoy extreme heat.

Ultraman and the Science Patrol. Also Johnny Sokko and his flying robot.
bchris02 03-13-2015, 10:52 AM Steve Lackmeyer: It's dying. If it goes totally dead, I'll share details of what was attempted.
Things aren't looking good for this development, whatever it was.
TU 'cane 03-13-2015, 11:12 AM Darn. Well, that's fine. As long as we get to hear what it was and doesn't totally go out the door without even a whisper.
It's one of those things, though, that hopefully wouldn't have needed some additional community input or interest once we know AFTER THE FACT.
You know, one of those situations where "well, if we would have known months ago, maybe we could have helped drive interest."
I guess we'll hear soon enough.

How about we switch gears and ask ourselves "what do we have in OKC, already in place, that makes other cities jealous?"
I'll start: pretty much no traffic. It's a beautiful thing.
How about we switch gears and forget Steve ever mentioned this.

Maybe compared to cities much larger than OKC but not to cities the same size.

Dallas and KC are always going to be one or two steps ahead of OKC. There really isn't anything that is going to make them jealous unless another Devon Tower type project gets announced.
Dallas and KC are always going to be one or two steps ahead of OKC. There really isn't anything that is going to make them jealous unless another Devon Tower type project gets announced.
Why would even that make Dallas jealous? It really wouldn't. Have you seen some of the bongs announced for Dallas? I dislike Dallas a lot but come on now.

I am generally curious about some of the claims you've made. I doubt that 10,000 number greatly. 10,000 units is A LOT.
Second, what does KC have that makes Dallas jealous? That's an interesting opinion of yours.
jccouger 03-15-2015, 10:14 AM Why would even that make Dallas jealous? It really wouldn't. Have you seen some of the bongs announced for Dallas? I dislike Dallas a lot but come on now.
If you like the bongs in Dallas than you should check out Denver.

Yes. The original 925' Devon Tower would have definitely made Dallas or KC jealous.
bchris02 03-15-2015, 04:07 PM Having just been in Dallas yesterday, I can attest that there is virtually nothing I can think of that is realistic for OKC that would make Dallas jealous. That city truly is a different world compared to OKC. To put it into perspective, Amarillo is to OKC what OKC is to Dallas. I doubt OKC will ever be jealous of anything that happens in Amarillo. That's why I have said for a long time that "impressed by" would have been a better choice of words than "jealous." It is possible to have a development in OKC that even Dallasites would be impressed by, but jealous? Probably not.
Plutonic Panda 03-15-2015, 04:10 PM the only thing I could think of that would make Dallas jealous is if we got a Disney Land theme park. If we got that, you could bet on Universal coming in behind them.
Plutonic Panda 03-15-2015, 04:12 PM Dallas really is my all time favorite city outside of LA.
I love cities where I can get on a 20 lane highway or choose not to drive and take mass transit which is everywhere in Dallas.
Yes. The original 925' Devon Tower would have definitely made Dallas or KC jealous.
Possibly KC, but only to a small minority of people who care about things like that.
A 900 footer would make a city with a 900 footer jealous or envious.
If you like the bongs in Dallas than you should check out Denver.
Should be things not bongs. But such is life.
