View Full Version : German Restaurants
zachj7 10-10-2014, 03:22 PM Hello all,
I have only been to Royal Bavaria and I know the selection of German restaurants is limited in the OKC metro. In your opinion, which one is the most authentic and best? I know its probably out of the question, but perhaps something with a more east german flare?
OKC German restaurants
Old Germany Restaurant
Royal Bavaria
Ingrids Kitchen
Das Boot camp
Am I missing any?
Roger S 10-10-2014, 03:30 PM I have never been there but I think Castle Falls (http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/46/1696791/restaurant/Inner-City-Northside/Castle-Falls-Oklahoma-City) offers German dishes.
I'm by no means an expert on German cuisine but I know what I like and my current favorite is Royal Bavaria.
Das Boot Camp is owned by the same people as Royal Bavaria but offers a different menu. I have never been disappointed there.
I grew up eating at Old Germany and while I think it is still good. It's not what it was 20 years ago.
Ingrids is good and they get their sausage from Siegi's in Tulsa which is one of my favorites but I usually go their for the German Bologna Sandwich.
EDIT: Royal Bavaria and Das Boot Camp get their sausages from Siegi's also.
bchris02 10-10-2014, 03:55 PM Royal Bavaria and Das Boot Camp are my favorite.

Castle Falls is excellent and there are several different options as far as quiet no kids area to the event center area that allows kids. Prices are reasonable for a nice restaurant and what you get. Service and food has been excellent everytime we have gone. Ingrids is decent for lunch. I have not had dinner there. Not as nice of an atmosphere.
Used to go to Royal Bavaria and food was very good. I think they are too expensive for what you get and they nickel and dime you. the final straw for us was when we went with neighbors and ate outside at picnic tables. Ordered several apps, dinners for the four adults, kid dinners for the other kids that were 5-11, several rounds of beer and several bottles of wine. We also had 2 year old twins that didn't really eat much with us and they charged a split plate fee because we shared our meal with them, (No extra plates or silverware and they don't bring out any free table items like bread or chips so literally didn't cost them anything). I sent a letter to the owner and he didn't even take the time to respond. thus...I have never been back. You are willing to lose customers that order high profit items like apps and drinks over nickel and diming a two year old...bad business.
Authentic German food tastes like sauerkraut and poverty. I like Das Boot in Norman because it does not taste like authentic German food.

Doesn't sound like you have ever been to Germany.

I lived there but I guess that doesn't count.
Rover 10-10-2014, 06:27 PM Then you hung out at the wrong places. That stereotype of German food is like saying American food tastes like poverty because we eat turnips and ham hocks. There is SO much more to German food than sauerkraut that your statement is laughable. If that is all you had to eat there, I guess that is why it tastes like poverty to you.
Easy180 10-10-2014, 07:25 PM Big time Royal Bavaria fan...Excellent food and beer. Great place to go when I need to score points with the Mrs.

if I made you laugh then mission accomplished. Yes, I was talking about stereotypical German good because that's what you usually find in American restaurants labeled German food. I do not care for that type food at all and even less so in Germany.
Watch more Anthony Bourdain and the foodie eppy's of Globe Trekker. Or Andrew Zimmern if you can stomach it. Good chow is everywhere, more so if you are adventurous.
Roger S 10-11-2014, 07:00 AM Wow.... Only took this thread 5 posts to devolve into bickering and derail from the topic.
I've only been to Ingrid's for lunch and once for brunch.... Can't say I liked the brunch myself but it is very popular and if you are in to desserts the ones offered for brunch are pretty amazing. I just wasn't impressed with the savory dishes on the brunchffet.
Their schnitzle is pretty good but I like Old Germany or Royal Bavaria better for schnitzel.
I found out recently Ingrid's also offer bierocks as a dinner special about every other Wednesday. I grew up eating bierocks in the small German Mennonite Kansas farm town I lived in as a kid. I haven't made it over to try them yet because Wednesday is the night I mow my yard but now that the grass has started to slow I plan on getting over there one night to try them.
RadicalModerate 10-11-2014, 08:12 AM I've been to Royal Bavaria a few times and thought it was great. Many decades ago, we used to eat at Old Germany, but at some point they got just a bit too pricey for what you were getting. The Keller in the Kastle was the best ever but I don't know how Castle Falls compares. All things considered, many of the items you can get at Ingrid's Kitchen are probably the best--and most authentic--German-style food around. Especially when accompanied by a Warsteiner Dunkel or two. =)
