Yeah, they MIGHT be able to open without a liquor license and have a caterer handle booze sales under a separate catering license. This is done pretty routinely. The occupancy permit is the big thing.

Pete 03-07-2016, 04:21 PM Yeah, they MIGHT be able to open without a liquor license and have a caterer handle booze sales under a separate catering license. This is done pretty routinely. The occupancy permit is the big thing. They might be planning to use the catering license from Wormy Dog. It is very close, too. Believe they just have to take everything out immediately after the event, then not return it until right before the next one. BDP 03-08-2016, 01:19 PM I know they were using a big east coast a/v consultant for their sound work and they specialize in live music venues. Same company is being used by the Jones Assembly. Being in the a/v business myself, I can tell you that the actual installation of the equipment can be done very quickly. Everything gets planned, ordered then you can pre-wire as soon as the walls go up. After they are finished with all the dirty parts of construction, you merely roll the equipment in, install it in place and test everything out. Yeah, I suspected it wouldn't take a lot of time. It's more the coordination and timing of everything. The whole this has to be done before we can start that thing. My limited experience is that nothing ever takes that much time once you get them to actually order supplies and then show up. Of course that could have just been my incompetent contractor. I guess that's how the music lab started doing it, with a catering license. We have weird laws. Pete 03-08-2016, 01:28 PM Commercial projects that need to get open in order to generate revenue typically have very aggressive timelines and often have severe penalty clauses for any contractor or sub who misses deadlines. New construction just isn't that complicated once things get rolling. By far and away the complexity is found in all the planning, financing and permitting that has to happen up front... But once the foundation has been laid, things usually move very fast. Renovations of quite old structures are a completely different animal, of course. Lots more challenges every step of the way. If you see substantial delays in new commercial construction after the foundation is in, it's usually a cash flow problem or in the rare case, a major contractor error. I have zero experience in totally new construction. They seem to be confident it's all going to come together by the Ben Rector show, so I imagine they got it all lined up. They probably have a little bit better access to right people with the city than I do, too. :p Pete 03-08-2016, 02:40 PM Yeah, my guess is they'll be cutting it very close with the certificate of occupancy and then will cater the events out of the Wormy Dog until they get a permanent liquor license. The building has been fully enclosed for a while now, so I'm sure they've made great headway on the inside, which is pretty simple apart from bathrooms. TheTravellers 03-08-2016, 03:47 PM I guess that's how the music lab started doing it, with a catering license. We have weird laws. I was (pleasantly) shocked to see a bar in the Performance Lab for the David J show a few weeks ago, thought that'd never happen due to the school (yeah, it's a university, but still) association. She said they were from Deep Deuce Grill, and they generally show up only if about 75+ tickets are sold, so even though the David J show was the most sparsely attended of the ones I've been to there, it must've hit 75... soonerguru 03-08-2016, 04:31 PM There was a bar at Yo La Tengo at ACM, too, but they needed at least one more to meet demand; the line was insane. soonerfan_in_okc 03-09-2016, 09:23 PM I was hoping once the bricks went up it would look better but nope. It's. called. the. criterion. The original structure definitely had some Art Deco incorporated into it and it would have been nice is the architects of this structure paid homage a bit to its namesake. Instead, they designed a structure that looks like it belongs in the middle of a north Dallas neighborhood. Any small amount of non-brick decorative ornamentation would create a contrast and break up the monotony of the brick walls. That's all I'm saying. Pete 03-10-2016, 06:42 AM Some good photos of the inside; looks like they are very far along: A Quick Glimpse Inside the Criterion | News OK (http://newsok.com/a-quick-glimpse-inside-the-criterion/article/5483926) VoiceOfReason 03-10-2016, 08:09 AM What do you expect it to look like? The Bricktown design committee required these guys to use all brick. It's Brick-town. If they would have designed an exact replica of the old Criterion the design would not have been approved. It does look like the glass above the main door and signage are supposed to look like homage to the old Criterion though. 2Lanez 03-10-2016, 12:13 PM It's. called. the. criterion. SouthsideSooner 03-12-2016, 11:03 PM I ran in to Jon Jenkins last night and he was telling me the sign would be going up today. The really cool thing about the first photo is that the letters will appear black in the daytime but will be white when the sign is lit up at night. He's the same guy that just completed the restoration of the Tower Theater sign after the first company they hired decided they were in over their head. Jon's a genuinely good guy and Dalmarc is a great local company... they do signs for Winstar down to small company's like mine. They should be at the top of the list for anyone needing a sign company. Great work and very reasonable prices... Rover 03-13-2016, 09:54 AM Why can't all construction projects move this fast? ;) Because development projects are all different with different considerations. As far as actual construction, this is a very straight forward simple construction project. Pete 03-13-2016, 09:57 AM Also, with a project like this the owners have a massive financial incentive to get done and open, as they have tons of shows already booked. Therefore, they pay for tons of overtime and likely provide the contractors with incentives and/or penalties. I often make my photographic rounds on Sunday mornings and every time I've been out at this site there are lots of people out there working. I've also seen people working inside there in the evenings. Most the other projects don't even have people working on Saturdays. dankrutka 03-13-2016, 12:53 PM Because development projects are all different with different considerations. I was just joking about how nice it is for a project to move this fast. I understand that different projects have all kinds of different challenges. From Gregg Allman/Rick Springfield to bands that have been around since the 90s (Third Eye Blind, Widespread Panic, Deftones, etc.) all the way to brand new bands. I think they've done a great job so far. Pete 03-15-2016, 08:48 AM Okay, seriously? Lol. Deftones is not in the same category as all these other names I've never heard one iota about.... I'm older than you and know almost all the acts they've booked. :) bradh 03-15-2016, 08:49 AM Man I haven't listed to Deftones since junior year of HS Urbanized 03-15-2016, 09:14 AM I'm older than you and know almost all the acts they've booked. :) Yeah same here. These acts are hardly unknowns, obscure or youth-oriented acts. I would say the average age for all of the shows, aggregated, will probably be in the mid-30s. If you haven't heard of them it probably just means your tastes run a little more mainstream - not that there's anything wrong with that - or heavily in a genre that has yet to be booked much there, i.e. commercially-oriented country, metal or classic rock. There are tons of, for instance, jazz acts, hip hop acts and country artists that I'm not really familiar with, but that doesn't meant that they don't have huge fan bases or that they are somehow lesser acts, just because I'M not a fan. And if I were being dismissive of those acts just because I'm not familiar with them, I'm sorry, it would come off as pretty arrogant and closed-minded. The hole this building is filling in the market is for shows that are going to bring great crowds but that can't justify an arena. If you're looking mostly for the type of acts that CAN fill an arena, you're right; this building (mostly) isn't going to have a lot of shows you're interested in. But occasionally they will probably book one that you are super excited about and weren't going to see, otherwise. Meanwhile, a huge section of the population that is tired of and stifled by the same-old same-old Eagles, Elton John, Keith Urban routine finally has a place that is booking shows THEY like. Believe it or not, diversity of entertainment options is actually a GOOD thing. John Knight 03-15-2016, 09:58 AM It is amazing that they have their first show next Saturday (3/26).
