View Full Version : Two new iPhones, Apple Watch revealed
Oh GAWD the Smell! 09-15-2014, 10:28 PM I am really tempted to get the iPhone 6 Plus, but I'm afraid it will be just too darn big to carry around.
On the other hand, I may end up using it much more as a reader and web browser because the awesome size of the screen.
One thing that Samsung has that I don't think Apple included is the IR blaster for controlling your TV and other A/V components. Great idea to get rid of yet another gadget (remote control).
I just ordered a Galaxy 5S yesterday, and one of the selling points to me was the IR blaster. A close second is the camera. The camera on my Motorola HD RAZR MAXX sucks cat butt...And as a self-important photographer...That just won't do. :D
Here's what I'm buying tomorrow:
Moto 360 by Motorola (http://moto360.motorola.com/)

Moto Hint (http://www.motorola.com/us/accessories-bluetooth-headsets/Moto-Hint/moto-hint-pdp.html)

I love that wood back. WANT
turnpup 09-16-2014, 11:42 AM Ordered my iPhone 6+, 128GB, silver, on Saturday. Order status as of today shows estimated delivery date between October 14 and 21. What's the estimated delivery for those of you who pre-ordered on the very first day?
I am not a gadget person, but my iPhone 5 has been having some problems. The screen malfunctions and sometimes thinks I'm touching it when I'm not, randomly selecting things and opening apps and stuff. And now it stopped ringing or vibrating when I get a text or a phone call, so I think I may have to get a new one. I'll probably tough it out for a month or two, until I can hold the new iPhones in my hand and see how they feel. Not sure which I'd want to go with yet.

If you ever have issues just make an appointment with the Apple Store and they will give you a replacement. Anytime I have an issue I have never had trouble getting a replacement.
One time they even gave me one after my Apple Care ran out a couple weeks before.
My warranty has been expired for a long time. My phone is about two years old. The contract has expired, so I doubt they'll give me a new one.

I thought you said 5s my mistake.
Lord Helmet 09-16-2014, 04:15 PM Okay, so AT&T sucks big time.
I pre-ordered at 2:25 am Friday morning (so 25 minutes after they accepted sales).
I got an email almost 24 hours later saying my card had been declined. And it gave me a link to go update the information.
The link doesn't work. It goes to a "Sorry we are undergoing scheduled maintenance" page which has been up for the past 19 hours. Just now, they updated that page with a "Text this link into your browser to access a temporary page". Well, that page doesn't exist. It just says "Page Not Found". So, I go back to my email and the phone number they gave me is a disconnected line.
After some browsing, I found another number to call. I call the first time, and tell the voice prompt my CC#. And it goes into an infinite loop and eventually gives up and says "Thank you for calling" and hangs up on me.
I call back, and finally get it to accept all my information. It then says, "Thank you for entering your payment info, Please hold while we transfer you to the next agent" and then it completely just hangs up on me.
The pre-order comes thru AT&T Premier. Which means I can't access the payment info from the regular AT&T site, I have to use whatever the Premier division has set up. This is a complete joke and cluster fudge. I am beyond furious right now. I am fuming.
How can a company this big (a TECHNOLOGY COMPANY) not even get the basics right. I can't get through to any agents, and the voice prompt keeps hanging up, and the website doesn't work.
Now, by the time I do get my payment info verified -- I will be so far behind in line it will be months before I get my phone. Thanks a lot AT&T.
I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. I ordered 2 phones, one for myself and the other for my wife. My order went through just fine, but hers got hung up with the issue you are describing. I FINALLY got someone on the phone today after a couple of days of the system hanging up on me. Now my phone will be here on launch day...but my wife's is delayed to mid October. Ridiculous.

I would have warned you all about ATT and Apple pre orders. I did one for my iPhone 3Gs and it was a nightmare.
I just order through Apple.com now.
Does anyone have issues with Verizon or Sprint?

Have you tried the different reset/restore options?
^
Also, upgrading to ios 8 when it comes out might resolve the problems.
I'll have to try that. I figured it was a physical problem with it.

I pre-ordered my 5 (32GB mid-range memory at that time) through Verizon and had no issues. I always had problems with AT&T/Cingular, didn't seem to have as many problems when it was SWBMS.

Yeah I usually order from Apple but I couldn't get an order completed there due to internet traffic. Oh well.
FighttheGoodFight 09-17-2014, 01:32 PM iOS 8 is out today for most Apple iDevices.
Has a few minor updates. I would not recommend downloading it on the 4s. The screen size has now become an issue for certain applications as well as performance.
catch22 09-17-2014, 03:26 PM Currently downloading iOS 8 for my iPad Air. Will report how it is when it installs.
Urbanized 09-17-2014, 03:29 PM Crud. New iOS updates always give me the heebie-jeebies. Not sure why, because (knock on wood) I've not had problems on my iPads, but I'm always afraid it won't wake up. Perhaps based on losing some iPods to disk problems and having iTunes updates cause Windows problems.
FighttheGoodFight 09-17-2014, 04:09 PM iOS 8 running well on my iPhone 5.
I installed the Swype keyboard to try out the new feature. It works just like the Android version. Not bad!

Half the population uses Apple? AWESOME!!!
Oh GAWD the Smell! 09-18-2014, 09:41 AM Half the population uses Apple? AWESOME!!!
Well, half the people in my house use Apple. And since the plural of anecdote is data...YES! HALF THE POPULATION!
David 09-18-2014, 10:35 AM Seems legit. Something like half of my family is on iOS and the other half is on Android, so clearly the math checks out.
Oh GAWD the Smell! 09-18-2014, 01:23 PM FYI...The Galaxy S5 is an awesome, AWESOME phone.
Mainly because my wife STILL doesn't realize that it's got an IR blaster in it, and that's why the TV is possessed and keeps flipping away from Big Brother.
^
Was surprised and disappointed that the new iPhones didn't incorporate an IR blaster, which is a great feature and a natural for a smartphone.
CuatrodeMayo 09-18-2014, 01:53 PM My Comcast cable box can be controlled from my iphone. With most new devices being wifi connected, line-of-sight IR controls might become a thing of the past.
Right, I have a Tivo app I use on my iPhone to control my DVR's through my home network.
But, that doesn't control my receiver (volume / sound / switching) or other A/V accessories which are not networked.

I am not a tech guy. Does this mean if I get an android phone that I can shoot someone with a heat ray?
Because if so I am definitely switching from Apple.
Urbanized 09-18-2014, 11:20 PM Don't worry, Apple will add the heat ray feature in a couple of years. And then act like they invented it.

Yup. Dish has been that way for a while as well. Use the app, and you can watch your stuff on your phone...Set the DVR, etc. Apple or Android.
But this will run anything using IR. Or at least interfere with it. :D
BBatesokc 09-19-2014, 07:55 AM If my wife and I each had our own remote to the same TV - it would be all out war!

This is the argument that Android users make...but the thing is, I could give a crap what features Android has, because I don't use Android devices. Those features only matter to me when they are on an Apple device because that's all that I use. Until then, who cares?
Urbanized 09-19-2014, 01:15 PM The majority of smartphone users.
BBatesokc 09-19-2014, 03:35 PM The majority of smartphone users.
Point? How does that apply to LordHelmets response when he was pretty clear he was speaking for himself and not "the majority of smartphone users."
Like I said before, I own phones on both platforms but honestly couldn't care less about the Android's features and when they came out. I have a reason for maintaining a droid also, but my interests are primarily in integration beyond the phone - how does it interact with my desktop, my tablets, my laptops, my home entertainment system, the cloud, etc.
Remove those aspects and all I really care about my phone is does it work as a phone and does it have a good selection of apps. To me, both platforms fill that requirement - but, FOR ME, only the iPhone also integrates seamlessly with my other devices.
If I didn't have a need to integrate with other devices then I could probably care less which platform I was on.

It's more interesting to watch people fight over which gaming console is better though. Especially when you have a semi high-end gaming PC to do it on. :Smiley122
Lord Helmet 09-19-2014, 07:49 PM I love watching people fight over which phone is better.
I don't care which one is better. I use Apple stuff. That's all I care about. Regardless of how many Android users there are...I could simply care less :)

No I know. I wasn't referring to you. You actually made a really good point that I haven't thought about before.
bluedogok 09-19-2014, 09:14 PM I'm one of those who use no Apple computer products (I stick to Windows since Apple computers don't run my software) but have an iPhone, iPods and my wife has an iPad. I mainly went to the iPod for mass storage capability after trying out other brands. They just work for me and what I need them to do, I wasn't happy with my HTC Droid Incredible and went back to the iPhone 5. Nothing against Android, I would consider one for a tablet (for myself) but I just prefer the Apple mobile stuff.
Urbanized 09-19-2014, 09:17 PM Point? How does that apply to LordHelmets response when he was pretty clear he was speaking for himself and not "the majority of smartphone users."...
It wasn't clear to me, apparently. He asked who cared about Android's features, I answered. It should be pretty obvious that I am just gently trolling/ribbing in a friendly way, anyway. Like I have stated before, I'm hardly anti-Apple. I'm posting this from an iPad, for one thing. While listening to my iTunes catalog via my AppleTV, I'll add.
I'm total Apple everything but I gotta admit they haven't been wowing me much lately. I'm not sure what I'm expecting but I don't think it's sending my heartbeat to somebody's wrist or releasing a cloud service with a one way door before its compatible with your PC OS. Losing some shine on that star there boys but it ain't the first time.
catch22 09-21-2014, 01:33 PM Well it will be mid October before I receive my phone now....
Got to love AT&T. Never again. Once this new contract is over, I'm switching to someone else. They are the worst company in the world.
BBatesokc 09-21-2014, 02:23 PM ...sending my heartbeat to somebody's wrist....
That is actually something I'm very much looking forward to. The wife and I already have Polar FT60 watches that monitor our heart rate during exercise.
I'm hoping the Apple watch exceeds what all our Polar watches do.
We find the HRM watches to be very motivating and telling about what exercises actually burn calories more efficiently.

bluedogok 09-23-2014, 09:29 PM I couldn't image carrying any of those monster phones (Apple or Samsung) in my pocket, my iPhone 5 is big enough for me to carry.
BBatesokc 09-24-2014, 06:24 AM I totally caved. The Sprint store drew me in like a money sucking tractor beam. I convinced myself I was just going to see the two models in person to decide which size I wanted and before my giddy inebriation subsided, I had bought two iPhone 6 phones (128GB models).
I admit it, I have an addiction and zero self-control.
That said, I assumed I'd want the 6+, but after holding each one I couldn't imagine being happy on a daily basis with the larger iPhone. Simply too much phone to carry around in a pocket and I can only imagine how goofy one would look with it clipped to your waist band. Not to mention trying to strap that thing on to your arm for a jog.
Only had them for a day, but so far I really like it. I was using a 4s so just finally having access to Sprint's LTE network was a huge improvement.
*Sprint gave me $125 for each of my 4s phones (thought that was very fair).
So far, so good - and most importantly..... the wife is happy (so, by default, I'm happy).
Oh GAWD the Smell! 09-24-2014, 06:25 AM Apple doesn't hold the patent on folding like a cheap lawn chair from little pressure...My Galaxy S5 would do the same.

Yeah, not so much. Even the much larger Note proved to be far more durable in an identical follow-up test by the same guy:

catch22 09-26-2014, 01:10 AM Well. It shipped and they are overnighting it via air to me. Should have it tomorrow sometime during the day.
It has absolutely been hell on earth not having a functional phone for the past few weeks. (Almost a month now). Aside from not being able to use any screen function (which makes texting via Siri a PITA), the charging port has begun to go out. So the cord has to hit the contacts at just the right angle or it won't charge. I'm glad my new phone is coming in -- I honestly don't think my 5 will be able to make it any longer than 3 or 4 more days.
BBatesokc 10-15-2014, 09:37 AM Two things.....
1.) BUY the supplemental insurance!!!!! I've only had my phone less than a month and I've already destroyed it. Fortunately I bought the Applecare+ so a new phone was only $79. Once the standard warranty expires, simple glass replacement will cost you $299. With Applecare+ its $99 and then $79 for a replacement (limit to 2 replacements).
I also have Sprint's insurance. At $13/month and a $200 deductible is stupidly expensive. However, it covers loss or theft (Applecare does not). And, its considered a business expense, so I can write it off.
2.) The new iOS comes with an Apple 'Health' App. Even if you don't use this app for working out or tracking your health YOU NEED TO STILL SETUP THE 'MEDICAL ID' FEATURE.
This has you enter your basic medical information and emergency contact information.
Emergency responders are being trained to look for this information and it can be used to help a lost phone get returned to you.
Even if your phone is password protected a person can click on 'Emergency' in the lower left hand corner - and then click on 'Medical ID' - and have access to the information stored there; Your name, age, medical conditions you've listed, emergency contact, blood type, organ donor status, height and weight.
Here is a quick video about it.....
