OKCisOK4me 07-01-2014, 12:15 PM Is this because I said something yesterday? You rock Pete!
OKCisOK4me 07-01-2014, 12:57 PM I added a direct link to this cam on my phones home screen and called it the "destruction cam"!
Jeepnokc 07-01-2014, 04:12 PM Is this because I said something yesterday? You rock Pete!
No Pete put this in motion quite awhile ago. We just didn't get it hooked up until this morning. It is streaming out of our window in the office.
SoonerDave 07-01-2014, 05:42 PM Okay, this is NOT intended to stoke any arguments or fights, its a plain, honest question....
..are they knocking the place down with a plain old wrecking ball, or are they going to use selective explosive charges??
Plutonic Panda 07-01-2014, 05:46 PM That would be awesome to see explosive charges, but I don't see it happening.
I doubt they'll use explosives.
Probably a combo of wrecking ball and that scissors/jaws cutting thing.
They did say they hoped to salvage and display some parts of it so I suspect they'll crane some of it onto trucks.
Bullbear 07-02-2014, 01:05 PM I want one of those groovy flowers from the sign for my office wall..
MadMonk 07-02-2014, 01:18 PM Awesome use of what I assume is the former Devon construction cam!
Awesome use of what I assume is the former Devon construction cam!
Yes, pulled out of the mothballs!
MadMonk 07-02-2014, 01:48 PM This thread made me nostalgic so I went over and checked out some of the old photos from the Devon cam thread. It's really cool to see how far that site progressed and the excitement - especially early on - that it produced.

catch22 07-02-2014, 05:22 PM I don't understand the overwhelming joy in its demise. I'm indifferent, neither joyful nor sad at the building's passing.
HOT ROD 07-03-2014, 12:36 AM sorry, looks like it doesn't do well at night - reflection

I think it's more of excitement for what's to come, rather than just about the demolishion. This is just the first step.

I don't know where you came up with that. No one around here seems very excited about what's to come, including most of the ones who hate stage center.

Just my personal take on the matter. I don't really have a love for the building either though.

I am.

I agree with this. No hate for the SC, but I don't mind change. A new tower, even if a little modest, will be a great economic generator for years to come.
This block is as dead as the Century Center, complete with vagrants.
jn1780 07-07-2014, 12:16 PM Looks like there's a bobcat on site.

I adjusted the camera to the left to see the sign. Not sure if they are getting ready to pull the sign up but forklift is right behind it. Also, just noticed the pile of wood they have pulled out of the building. It is on left side behind the blue walkway.

I am very excited about the opportunity to watch new development for this site. No matter how much anyone loves SC, its hard to argue it hasn't been productive for anyone (in fact, destructive) in a long, long time, and that never helped the fact that the broader city never embraced it. Time for us all to look forward to something new and in keeping with the other new development in downtown OKC.
Webcam is back on-line and you can see it looks like they are getting ready to take down the sign:

May I ask the type and brand of camera used? Is it an HD cam?
Thanks!

It's a Logitech 9000. It's capable of higher resolution than what you see here but we keep the resolution at a mid-point so it doesn't hog too much bandwidth.

Yes, thanks so much to Jeep and his staff for hosting this for us!
They've been incredible helpful and gracious.
David 07-10-2014, 10:27 AM I swear this is the slowest demolition ever. Just pull the band-aid off already!
OKCisOK4me 07-10-2014, 12:06 PM Yeah, they musta meant August!
I swear this is the slowest demolition ever. Just pull the band-aid off already!
They have been salvaging things from inside.
You can see some debris piled up outside now.
When they are ready to level the structure itself, it will probably go pretty fast.
shawnw 07-10-2014, 03:49 PM There should have been two salvage phases. One for the really good stuff for future projects, and one for people to just maul the place and take whatever little pieces they want (Berlin wall style). Might have saved them some demolition cost. :-)

HangryHippo 07-10-2014, 05:57 PM It's a shame they won't reopen the road directly south of Stage Center.
Paseofreak 07-10-2014, 08:32 PM One of the first steps in modern demolition is to remove and segregate hazardous materials such as asbestos containing materials, lead containing materials, murcury switches, lamp ballasts, etc. These things take time. It's mostly hand work. Given the nature of stage lighting, there's a pretty good chance that place is full of asbestos. Also, sometimes it pays to remove and dispose of materials differently, sending carefully segregated metals to one place, wood and gypsum board to another and concrete to yet another. That effort is not insubstantial.

I'm not sure about that, Pete. The place is largely continuous pour reinforced concrete. I think once the (fewer than most people think) metal parts are removed, you probably will see a few weeks of jack hammering and rubble removal. MAYBE wrecking ball, but I'm not sure how effective that would be. Block/mortar construction would be much easier to remove.
^
I'm sure you are right...
I thought John Rex started the same day as OKCPS but I just looked and they don't officially open until Sept. 12th, so they have some time to get this done before the kiddies arrive.
David 07-11-2014, 08:16 AM Cool pic. What subreddit?
I was able to find it on /r/okc (http://www.reddit.com/r/okc/comments/2ac5p3/stage_center_demo_has_begun_they_are_tearing_out/).
Just the facts 07-11-2014, 12:19 PM It's a shame they won't reopen the road directly south of Stage Center.
Yep - that would have created a very nice terminal vista for California Ave and created a direct visual link between Film Row and MBG. Oh well, opportunity missed.
bombermwc 07-14-2014, 02:48 PM Why are so many people obsessed with putting intersections back in? You know the first thing to happen once they put it back in is for more stoplights to go in and slow down the flow of traffic...in very tight spaces. And if you dont put lights in, you can count the days before people start complaining about there not being one. And with access being only a block away, the extra cost for road construction/maint outweight any benefits. Where are you going on that one block of road? Just the next street over, which already has a light at the existing intersection. Re-connecting the grid just for the sake of re-connecting it, just doesn't do anything for me.

It's almost like, every single block has to be the same.
bombermwc 07-15-2014, 08:32 AM I would argue that if walkability if your argument, then this block actually serves that purpose as-is FAR BETTER than restoring the grid could ever hope to because the "grid" is there with a stone path, avoiding any vehicle traffic. We'll sadly lose some of the trees with the new OG&E tower, and possibly all of them with the southern block. I'd rather see a way to maintain the tree cover if possible....makes walking in the summer much nicer.....and a million times nicer than walking down a street grid.
OKCisOK4me 07-15-2014, 08:47 AM There's a thread about the stage center. I was eager to read that some action was happening but I have to read about walkability...
OKCisOK4me 07-21-2014, 08:45 AM Is the cam down or has nothing more progressed?
HotStuff80 07-22-2014, 12:58 AM It's back up now.
At this hour my time (10:58 P.M. Pacific time) it is not up-and-running.
David 07-22-2014, 07:56 AM Aside from it currently being down, there is something funny going on with the webcam image, I never see the most recent one unless I hard refresh the page. I bet the cache headers being sent aren't configured quite right for an image that constantly changes.
OKCisOK4me 07-22-2014, 08:05 AM Still down.... that's even after clensing the cookies.
It looks like there's an excavator at work in the far right of the frame...
David 07-22-2014, 11:05 AM Yeah, now that it's back up the caching headers are "Cache-Control: public, max-age=604800" and "Expires: Tue, 29 Jul 2014 15:55:56 GMT" which put together mean whatever is served up is going to last for 7 days in the browser cache (max-age is in seconds, and expires is 7 days out from my page refresh). Something like "Cache-Control: private, max-age=0, no-cache" and an Expires equal to the timestamp the image is served should give us a current image just from loading the thread without a refresh. It would need to be set just on the pete/webcam directory though, you wouldn't want to disable caching for any of the other site images.
/web developer hat off
OKCisOK4me 07-22-2014, 12:01 PM I try to justify loving the Stage Center as it's being gutted but I just can't. The only thing I love is hating it..can't wait for the wrecking ball to deploy.
Urbanized 07-22-2014, 12:47 PM I completely understand why someone would believe that no matter what it is the right thing for the building to come down, regardless of what replaces it. I obviously don't agree and I've said my piece time and again. But honestly - and I say this with the best of intentions - don't let that much negative energy consume you. It's not healthy.
OKCisOK4me 07-22-2014, 01:05 PM ^^Me? Lol... Never
