View Full Version : Restaurants that allow smoking?

Did a quick search, couldn't find a thread that just had a list, was scattered all over in various threads specific to each restaurant, so thought I'd try to start one since we were going to go to Mickey Mantle's for my wife's birthday, then found out they allowed smoking in the bar, so we decided against it.

This is to try to get a list of restaurants that allow smoking (not bars, clubs, etc., but restaurants). Don't really care if it's in a separate area with separate ventilation, smoke can and does get into the non-smoking areas, so we just don't go anywhere that allows smoking at all.

So here's the list so far, please add to it, thanks...

Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse
Henry Hudson's (not sure if it should be on the list since I'm not sure if it's a restaurant, pub, or bar)

Just so you know, the law is that if you allow anyone under 21 into a restaurant smoking is completely banned OR they have to have a completely separate, separately ventilated enclosure for smokers.

However, that does not include outdoor spaces. I doubt very many restaurants in Oklahoma restrict people from smoking on the patio, and frankly to me that's worse than the separated indoor spaces because smoke always blows in from the outside, you often have to walk through the outdoor area to get in and out of the restaurant, etc.

Did not know the law, thanks, but they still have an out in the "separately ventilated enclosure" loophole, which sucks. To me, that's kind of like the outdoor patio smoking, it just always gets inside the non-smoking area somehow.

Yes, it was a ridiculous attempt at compromise, but all it means is that several places have invested heavily in separately ventilated spaces, which makes it that much harder to get smoking completely out of bars and restaurants, which is the norm almost everywhere else, including most of Europe.

But, the smoking laws are a whole other subject and don't want to derail.

Very, very few restaurants have the separate smoking areas. Henry Hudson's is an over 21 bar that also serves food, although I know the Bricktown location is different.

I'm surprised Mickey's has a dedicated area and off the top of my head, I can't think of any others.

We were surprised too, really wanted to eat there, but nope, not gonna even think about it anymore, sadly. And coming from IL and WA, it was a shock to see how much smoke is still in OKC, but yeah, separate topic.

Very cool that there don't seem to be that many out there, hopefully as the days run on, not many will be added to the list. :-D

You are probably like me that even the smell of smoke is nauseating. No way I could eat a meal if I could smell smoke even in the slightest.

Part of it is that there is so little smoking out here and what remains is so tightly controlled, that I go very long periods of time without even getting a sniff. It's only made me more sensitive when I do. It also plays havoc with my allergies.

I have a very hard time when I'm back in OKC and it's one of the things that would stop me from moving back. Very, very hard to go backwards in this respect (which I'm sure is a big part of your issue).

Haven't been in a few years now, but Friendly's #2, on S Shields, near SE 66th, had a separate smoking room. Never had smoke bother me because of it.
I used to grab breakfast there, and on occasion would hit up their catfish specials at lunch or dinner, when I was working on the south side (07-09)

Pub W in Norman has a smoking area upstairs, but you'd honestly have a hard time telling it was smoking when you are downstairs. Despite the name, they are a full service restaurant that also has a full service bar upstairs.

I think when buildings have smoking on the same floor, people going in and out of the doors frequently may cause a wiff or two to get in to the non-smoking area. Depends on the number of smokers, weather, traffic and cigar presence.

Also - Tapwerks in Bricktown is non smoking downstairs, and smoking upstairs.

List so far:

Mickey Mantles (Same floor)
Old Chicago (Same floor)(Some locations)
TGI Friday's (Same floor)
Buffalo Wild Wings (Same floor)
McNellies (3rd Floor smoking)
TapWerks (2nd Floor smoking)
Pub W (Norman)(2nd Floor smoking)

When the law changed, Mickey Mantle's invested heavily in a remodel to enclose (glass) their bar completely and installed a separate very sophisticated air system that ensures no smoke makes it to the dining room. In the case of Mickey's it was appropriate, as the wanted to preserve the old-fashioned steakhouse experience which included cigar smoking. Juniors has a similar setup.

When I was in NYC a few years ago I had a great conversation with the proprietor of a fantastic cigar store in the financial district. We were lamenting the fact that there were few options for cigar smoking in Manhattan, and I mentioned the way our laws worked and brought up Mickey's in OKC. He was a life-long MM fan, and I swear he immediately started planning his trip to OKC just to be able to smoke in MM's bar. Not even kidding about this.

Thanks much to all of you for the answers (pw405, thanks for the details!), doesn't look like the smoking places will impact our to-eat list much, except MM's.

And yeah, Pete, I've been away from smoke for so long that just a hint of the smell is way gross... But you can't escape it - driving around here when the car windows can be opened (I do that even in 100+ degrees) is also gross due to the huge number of smokers here, I tell people "Ah, the smell of spring in OKC, cigarette smoke" :-P

Yeah, I mentioned Junior's. What a great bar that place has. It's a time warp.

Without this turning into a rehash of the WSKY thread, I also only go to non-smoking bars. I wish there were more of them in OKC, but I manage just fine. The Plaza has been a help.

I was driving through Texas last week, and we stopped at a Chili's in Sherman. My whole party looked dumbfounded when the hostess asked "smoking or non?" We couldn't believe this was still an option.
